What is your state of mind on a Monday after a weekend? No Tuesday is when everyone is over weekend mode with three days available for emergency patching. Microsoft patch days are Tuesdays, the last company I worked for that developed software that they sold to customers had releases on Tuesdays and they had significantly few customers, although our software was essential to their business so failures cause interrupted cash flow for them so … but my point being, Tuesday is a “safe” day.

Woke up to yet another disappointing morning, reading main page to see nothing new >_<

I think we should all just assume (since they’re not communicating any further) that it’ll be pushed to Tuesday. Either that or just give up all hope and have zero expectations of it coming.

When it didn’t come Wednesday it was obvious that Tuesday was the earliest. Major patches are always on Tuesday. Fixes to crashes or broken new content comes when fixed but major patches are always Tuesday.

They certainly wouldn’t release it to late in the week in case of an unforeseen problem because like normal software developers, they don’t want to work weekends either.

Why is silk going up in price?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

No, when they raised it from 2 to 3 silk was also “in the toilet” and thus the two base mats at vendor with a several million glut of supply now matched in the requirement for refinement. It was a step toward being consistent.

Just like how formulas for armor were already consistent. Light armor was always cloth for the insignia, cloth for the padding, cloth for panel while medium and heavy were cloth for the insignia, cloth for the padding, leather or metal respectively for the panel. Just the Tier level changed between quality levels.

Rare and below quality the quantity of cloth matched the amount needed for the padding. At exotic it was 5x the amount needed for the padding and for Ascended, it was only 3×.

The only place not consistent was making the silk bolt requirement 100 Vs 50 for either Course Thick Leather Squares or Mithril Ingots, the other two refined T5 mats.

Salvaging Runes from WvW Armor

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Did you every think that this was done intentionally. There is no way to remove upgrades from any armor or weapon right now other than with an extractor or destroying any that are salvageable with a BLSK. Now since they don’t want to flood the market with mats and runes from items bought with alternative currency, they aren’t salvageable. So you are SOL. Chalk it up as a learning experience and don’t put upgrades in any item that isn’t bought with just gold from the TP.

Couldn’t read through all that 19 pages but if anyone would kindly answer me this question: What exactly is preventing the idea of changing silk crafting cost from 3 to 2 just like metal and leather crafts?

Only Deldrimor Steel via Mithrilium needs only 2 T5s in Mithril Ore (100 ore in total). But the Iron and Steel Ingots require 3 Iron Ore (90 ore in total).

Elonian Leather Square via Spool of Thick Elonian Cord requires 50 Cured Thick Leather Squares, needing 3 Thick Leather Sections per Square.

So it’s not just Silk that required 3. If anything they matched the the Silk Bolt requirements to the Cured Thick Leather Square which always needed 3.

There are a few very, very, large files that seem to take forever to download.

Can i pause and resume the download of the big files later cause i can’t download them in one run ?

You can pause the entire download and keep your place but you can’t skip individual files. They announced that in the future that the game updater will stream content so you can start playing faster but currently you need the whole game to play.

Now you can download on any PC, if you are allowed too, and simply copy the game’s directory to a LARGE USB stick and take that home and copy it to your PC. The game can be installed on as many machines as you want, it’s just you can only play on one at a time. You paid for the account, not a copy of the game.

No it isnt. Profit is gold returned from invested gold that was already a reward. A reward is items/gold created from nothing. TP profits =/= dungeon rewards.

You can repeat this as many times as you like but it doesn’t make it true. Nobody said that TP profits were dungeon rewards, because it clearly doesn’t come from dungeons, but it is still a reward, no different at the player level than gold earned from an event, or a champ bag, or a mob loot, or a story mission, or a level-up prompt. And again, at the macro level there is a difference, in that it adds to the total gold supply, and the devs do need to stay on top of that, but that macroeconomic difference is irrelevant at the player level. To the players, gold in == reward, and TP profit is just as much gold in as dungeon profits.

And you can repeat that as much as you want and it won’t make it any truer either.

ANet only has controls over reward sources and mandatory sinks in this game. Now if a player can establish a profitable venture trading with other players, it’s the same as someone has the skills to speedrun dungeons. They are rewarded for their skill.

The competitive nature of the TP causes prices to collapse quickly to where incoming supply is bought in it’s entirety and if the price is high enough, encourage others to seek out additional supply to sell. On a basic mat like silk scrapes, the trading volume is high enough to reflect the true value of silk.

Think of it this way. Your choice is to gather it yourself or pay someone, either what they are asking for or offering a price for someone else to gather it for you. That’s the entire purpose of the TP. If you offer too little, others feel it’s not worth doing and you will get none. It’s like paying the neighbor’s kid to shovel your driveway and walk. Offer enough he’ll be willing to do it, not enough, enjoy being snowed in or doing it yourself.

Grind is what you make of it. Don’t like repeating the same dynamic event, move. Anyways Colin, the head of the game, recently defined what they considered to be grind in other games and that was what they were trying to avoid here, not whatever a player doesn’t like to do repeatedly simply to make the most gold or farm a particular mat.

Unless you are interested in WvW, server choice is now meaningless as the “Megaserver” tech the game now uses fill maps with players from all servers. It does use server, guild and of course party to help determine which instance of the map to dump you into but more often than not, it can seem random but at least the maps tend to be full of other players at all hours.

If WvW is important, then you can check out the current WvW rankings. Be warned that top servers will tend to be full and not available.

I saw an overcutting/undercutting thread again recently. Haven’t seen one in a while, probably someone returning with that issue still stuck in their craw.

The answer to the title was answered relatively quickly, the new source of cloth during Wintersday ended so the price is returning to pre-Wintersday levels.

The reason why silk is in high demand has been talked to death as have alternate ascended mat and armor recipes and reasons why higher tier mats are going for lower prices than lower tier mats.

Again the thread turns. Now it’s about the those devilish TP flippers.

Of course this isn’t an issue with silk because the gap between the max buy and min sell is less than the TP’s 15% cut so there is no immediate profit to be made because liquidity and quick turn around is everything in flipping. Sure someone could be buying silk and post it for sale at a 25% mark up but they will have to be willing to wait for the price to reach that level, if ever. That’s not flipping but speculating.

Actually this thread for calling out silk may be a contributing cause towards it’s continued rise. Some may consider this a time to speculate or invest in a stockpile now. The more players entering bids, the more likely the bid price will rise. This will encourage the sell price to rise as well. No reason to chase the sell price down if the bids are rising now.

Does GW2 only use 1 core of a quad core cpu?

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

The game uses a modified GW engine which was Dx8 at the time and only needed a single core. Dx10 was out but only on Vista and gamers were iffy about Vista plus Dx10 was new while Dx9 was a mature API with tricks and gotchas well documented. So the engine was modified for Dx9 and dual core minimum, and that was that.

Sure it took several more years before the game shipped but the rendering portion of the engine was checked off as done and development likely went into server side design for a non-instanced MMO with 100s of players on the same map doing multiple events at the same time.

Now Blizzard was able to introduce a newer client but they were bringing in upwards of a BILLION dollars a year in subscription fees. GW2 is around $350 million in total sales.

Several questions from a new player

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

The wiki is your friend.

1) http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Day_and_night

2) http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Crafting#Locations

3) Don’t know, not running a profession with pets.

4) If killed by a critter or a player in WvW, one piece of armor is damage. After all pieces are damage then one will break and it’s stats will no longer count. Armor can be repaired for free at blacksmiths throughout the world. Note falling to your death or cooking yourself in a pool of lava will not damage armor.

5) As in after some amount of inactivity you will be dumped back to the character select screen. But while in game you are fair game for any nasty that wanders or is kited by.

6) The little down arrow on the current chat tab drops down a selection box that you can tick which chat channels you want to see in that tab. Different default tabs have different options ticked. You might have switched to one by accident that didn’t have NPC chat enabled. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Chat_panel

7) Professions are this game’s classes. Crafting disciplines –
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Crafting

8) Add-ons aren’t generally allowed unless they are simple overlays. The UI the game has is the only UI you are going to get with it’s very minimal repositioning of some elements and size settings. While ANet looks away at macroing when it comes to playing instruments, any attempt to combine actions into single keystrokes or controlling multiple accounts simultaneously, such running all the characters in your party via 5 sessions, is against ToS and will be treated harshly with little chance of reversal.

As for Hearts, it’s true that it’s a format of do X of something to complete but often there is a choice of activities and you don’t need to complete it right then. The game remembers how much if any is done. As a matter of fact there isn’t a reason you have to do any of them except for XP. And once done with that character the heart unlocks and the “quest giver”, who you may never need to meet, turns into an NPC vendor who will buy your stuff and may sell unique items, as in available only from that NPC, for Karma, a “currency” you get for completing hearts and events.

As for not finding stuff to do, this game isn’t about leading you from one ? to another and then off the map to the next one. It’s about exploring the world on your own and finding the Dynamic Events that occur. Also just about everything you can do will give you XP other than standing about. Rezzing NPCs and other players, gathering mats from nodes (which may not be visible to you yet at your level), visiting Points of Interests, Vistas and Skill Point challenges (again may not be visible yet), unblurring areas of your current map. Critters gain XP bonuses the longer they have been in the world since they spawned, going off the beaten path and bonking them can be very rewarding XP wise. Crafting also gives XP.

Also the game will down level you so critters are still a challenge (less so as you get better gear) and they will reward you with level appropriate XP and item drops (mostly as type of bags/sacks and item quality is affected by the area’s level).

Edit: And welcome, remember to have fun. This isn’t a game where you rush to max level to get to interesting activities. And check out the OMG sticky at the top of this forum for useful bits of info.

Does GW2 only use 1 core of a quad core cpu?

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

No. That’s not how software works. The game uses a number of threads but only a few are use a lot of CPU “time”. Since no thread can exceed the total performance of a single core, even if it hops between cores, the game is limited by the performance of single core. This is where the confusion comes from when people talk about single core. Overall I see enough CPU use to occupy between 2 to 3 cores fully, even though that work is distributed across all the cores on the CPU.

Since you have and AMD CPU (so do I BTW) their performance per core are much lower than Intel’s, which is why when asked what CPU to get the majority will pitch Intel as this game especially when in crowds of players, is considerably more CPU performance dependent than Video Card. This game’s engine isn’t designed to be a showcase for Video Card benchmarking.

So going from an AMD HD 5770 to a nVidia GTX 970 isn’t going to have the same impact in GW2 as it would in a game built around one of the commercial game engines built for First Person Shooters where frame rate is used to “measure” a game’s quality. In those games, CPU performance has a lower overall impact than the performance of the video card so CPU brand doesn’t matter as much.

How long will that take?

Depending on how popular an item is, it may take minutes to hours for your order to be filled, even with those out bidding you. But in bids for things you would like to have tomorrow or the day after, otherwise if you need it right this instance, then buy it directly at a notable markup.

Now if the item is high demand but extremely low supply, they sorry, the only solution I know is to close the gap with the low sell significantly enough that other bidders will “let you get it for that price”.

There are more than just Hearts, there are Dynamic Events that can spring up as you are wandering around exploring and these are the main source of XP with their completion bonuses. But lots of things give XP, gathering mats at nodes, exploring areas that are still blurred out on your map. Rezing downed NPCs and other players.

A number of features are level locked, I’m not sure about crafting but each of the starting zones does have a crafting location where you can talk to a crafting master to unlock a particular craft, there are 8 and you can only have two active at a time. As a Elementalist Tailor (light armor) and Artificer (staff/scepters/focus) would be a lightly pairing. You also get XP from crafting.

An alternative is selling mats you get to the Trade Post, again, not sure when you are introduced to it when leveling a new character (they redid new character progression some months back and I haven’t rolled a new character since then).

As for the picks about your background, that only really affects what quests you get during the first 1/3rd of your personal story but they all converge for the next 1/3rd of your personal story so it’s just flavor.

You can dye your outfit at any time via your character panel, for free, with the dyes you have unlocked. Different pieces of armor have varying number of dyes they can take, 2-4. But once you dye them and accept the change, they are permanent. I don’t remember if swapping a piece copies over the previous color scheme or not.

Sort of sad about removing WvW for map completion. While it was a pain it was also a challenge, requiring planning and coordination over weeks if you weren’t a WvW regular. I hope they make completing the WvW maps into some other kind of achievement. Otherwise all the Vistas, PoIs and Skill Challenges become vestigial.

Ecto buy orders are 31.21s. Crystalline Dust sell orders are 18.36s. According to those that track these things, you will got ON AVERAGE, 1.84 dust per ecto. Master Salvage is 61.44c per.

Assume your buy orders are 1% higher in price and sell orders 1% lower. Don’t forget the 15% tax on the TP.

300 Luck needs 4,295,450 EoL

31.21 × 1.01 – ( 1.84 × 18.36 × 0.99 x 0.85 ) + 0.6144 ~ 3.71s per 104 EoL.

That’s 1532g, over 41K ectos for 0 to 300.

You only get 11 EoL on average from blues, 30 from greens. That means you would have to have an end cost, after selling off the mats, of under 33c for blues and under 89c for greens to be cheaper, ignoring the cost of the salvage kit per use. The maths are a bit harder since the type and amount of mats vary with the item being salvaged. Most minor runes and sigils are around vendor / 0.85 prices so don’t expect them to make up the cost for using a better salvage kit beyond basic on greens.

Then there’s the question of buying 390K blues or 107K greens.

Fun fact: I played this game at launch, and loved it for quite a while. But for various reasons I stopped playing, and haven’t played for at least a year. Now I’m back with a new account, as I didn’t even manage to log in on the old one. And with the sale, a new account didn’t seem like a bad idea. Might as well go with a fresh start. But since I haven’t played in a long time, I’ve forgotten a lot of basic stuff.

1. How do I find quests? I’m currently an Asura lvl 2, and did one of those heart-quest things by destroying deactivated robots. What now? I have one heart-quest more I’m not sure how to do, and one quest to kill a monster. But how do I find out where to go? Is there a quest-list or something?

2. I know those heart-quests are in the nearby area, but how do I know how far I can go?

3. The text is very small and hard to read on my screen (using a 40" TV.) Is it possible to get it larger? I’ve already set the text in the options-menu to as big as it will go, and setting the UI any bigger than Medium makes it cover too much of the screen, without making the text bigger. Same with decreasing the resolution. It’s currently set to 1920×1080, but setting it any lower doesn’t help the text size.

I’m sure there are tons of other things I’ve forgotten, but let’s deal with that when we need to.

1. Scouts will show you what Hearts are around to do. Or you simply wander about revealing the map and stumble onto them. Really most times you simply need to be in range for the heart or event to pop up on the right side of the screen.

2. Not sure what you mean? Tab through the nearby critters. If they are too high of a level, don’t go that way, or at least not too far into that area.

3. They is a UI setting that should be big enough at HDTV res on a 40" screen, unless you are like 10ft back from the monitor/set. I think it’s on the graphic settings page.

Why is silk going up in price?

just reduce the silk requirement to 50 bolts. deldrimore ingot needs 50 mitril ingot. elonian leather needs 50 T5 leather square. why do they need to make damask need 100 silk bolt ?

I’m guessing the supply and demand models they used showed that 50 wouldn’t be enough to turn silk into a viable traded mat (having a value greater than vendor + 1c, now vendor / 0.85).

Direct X12 for Guild Wars 2 in the future?

I’d rather see the game using the latest OpenGL so at least everybody including MAC users who also bought the game could finally get some good performances.

Don’t forget that the game is FreeToPlay, so a smaller audience means less money for ArenaNet at the end.

And btw, the better way to end the 10FPS in WvW zergs is to redesign WvW so it would be less about zerking. Yes, it is easier to say than to do, but if you think about it, once you’ll get rid of the GPU/CPU bottlenet, you’ll have the next bottleneck: networking. And neither DirectX nor OpenGL will save you with that.

opengl next has not been release. in fact, it is being shown on march 5

http://schedule.gdconf.com/session/glnext-the-future-of-high-performance-graphics-presented-by-valve

Neither is DirectX 12 :p

And by the way, they are quite equivalent anyway if you believe John Carmack’s words.

direct x 12 will probably be release when windows 10 is out. I believe microsoft been working on it longer than the khoronos group.

It doesn’t matter. Again, gw2 is intended to a larger audience than just the Windows 10 crowd.

it doesnt matter, because for example nvidia gpus back to gtx 500 or something will get a driver update and support dx 12 on a software level. its still wont be as strong as a gtx 970/980 because both will support dx 12 on a hardware level. but still, its a major increase in performance.

even wow has a 64 bit client and supports dx 11 so far.

and even if your computer is too old to support dx 12, they can make it so you could still run gw2 with dx 9.

Thats the thing i would propose to ANet..

DICE managed to implement the Mantle renderer afterwards too and its an option in the settings now

If somebody now says that if DX12 was available ANet would put in way too many details for DX9 (older pcs) to render: Watch WoodenPotatoes video on the Heart of Thorns event. He says that even though the game ran on workstation (higher tier) pcs the game didnt run always above 60fps. Considering GW2 doesnt use Crysis 3 grade textures this really is a bummer. If ANet would implement DX12 most likely EVERY zone that under DX9 dipped under 60fps would run always above 60fps…

and to be honest.. GW1 survived survived 7 years with DX9, but it simply won’t be the case with GW2.. (using DX9 in ~2019… urr.. really..? DX9c would be 15 years old by then…)

DICE sells their Frostbite game engine. Their engine is competing with UE4, id Tech 4, CryEngine 3, etc. for 3rd party licensing fees. So adding a new graphics API to Battlefield 4 is also adding a feature to their game engine product. GW2’s engine isn’t marketed. There is no “bonus” income stream for making it an awesome FPS engine.

Also GW1 was a Dx8 game. Until Microsoft drops Dx9 backwards support, there is no immediate incentive to spend the resources modifying the engine to add better multicore scaling which is required to see significant improvement with either Dx11 or 12.

Coming from WoW there are a few things you should know.

1. Never use the mystic forge, it’s a trap. Farm gold not materials as some accounts like mine have been hexed since launch. Go and farm events not materials. Gold can buy anything you need on the trading post.

2. Never sell materials. You’ll need them later.

3. You can buy anything in the game with gold so buy low sell high in the trading post and spend your time in level 80 maps doing events and running dungeons.

Anet wants players kept poor so they’ll buy gems and convert to gold so amass a fortune and ruin their plans.

Never sell materials ? Thats why many people think they are so poor. Selling materials
is the main source of income in this game .. at least if your not a speedrunner.

Or did you just meant never sell them to an NPC ? That would be correct, since you
should sell them at the TP to make money.

I make most of my money in level 40-60 areas btw. (iron, platinum, hard wood)

Well that’s an opportunity cost/benefit issue. Sell what you have to buy what you need to level easier to acquire gold faster or hoard mats so you don’t need to buy as much when leveling up a craft.

If they were going to “fix it”, they would have in the first month of ascended armor when silk jumped to the price it is today, not a year plus. They could have dropped the number of bolts from 100 to 50 but I’m not sure how much that would affect the consumption side of silk relative to new supply.

It wouldn’t help light armor in terms of price but the “recipe” for a piece of light armor vs medium or heavy is at least consistent, needing twice as much cloth to make than medium or heavy.

Changing from 2 to 3 silk scraps needed wasn’t the problem as T5 leather squares also needs 3 sections and Iron and Steel Ingots need 3 Iron Ore. Not every refinement needed only 2.

As Winterdays price drop shows, they only need to introduce another source for silk. How about raw silk from spiders that salvage into silk scrap? It’ll give us one more thing to hunt.

This game, at least on the PvE side, is all about co-op play without the need for formal teaming 98% of the time. It’s all about exploration and discovery rather than being shuttled from one hovering ? to the next until you are pushed off into the next area.

Just about any activity will give you XP. You will automatically be down leveled if you are a higher level than the area you are in. You will still get XP based on your actual level and item drops will also be level appropriate although certain drops will be based on the critter’s level or the area in for some event and heart rewards. You could level all the way to 80 and never leave the starter map, but you would be missing out on a very beautiful looking world.

Leveling is rather quick and once past the early fast levels, linear all the way to 80. When a major event occurs, I describe it as a flash-mob with swords. Players stream in from all over the map, dispatch the big bad and disperse. There are major bosses that spawn on a schedule so if you see a crowd of players milling around with nothing about, they are waiting for the 3:15 boss to spawn. Here’s a link to a handy time table.

There was a time when T6 cloth was worth a lot, before ascended armor was introduced. When Exotic was the top tier in armor Gossamer was worth twice the current cost of Silk. Of course you only needed a fraction of it compared to ascended’s need for Silk. And with it’s prime use as a mat gone, Gossamer’s price has plummeted as the TP overflows with supply at prices few are willing to spend for it.

As for the other tiers discrepancy in prices. That has to do to lack of new supply. Since T2-T4 mats are also used in the creation of Damask the demand is also high. Leveling is fast in this game and once 80, items dropped by critters will salvage into T5 and T6. Only dropped bags and heart rewards may have map level appropriate materials. And since T1 can be promoted to T2 (at a loss) which is in demand is the reason it’s price also seems high.
