Err, OP was pretty aggressive and thought he was above everyone else by making his questions “strictly for the developer”.

When you look at how WvW is made, it’s quite clear that it’s meant to allow a transition for players who only do PvE to playing WvW. Most WvW experts (if they didn’t start with PvE themselves) should remember just how many players came from PvE and how much many of those players have learned.

WvW too imbalanced/preventing map completion

1) Dungeons are instanced, “high-level” content with their own exploration rewards, Southsun Cove was introduced long after a lot of people got their map completion, and sPvP/tPvP have always been separate. WvW is part of world completion to encourage all players to spend a minimum amount of time in it, some of these players will end up playing WvW regularly which is good for servers with small WvW communities.
2) Current situation (free transfers remaining for a long time, because guesting couldn’t be implemented) was certainly a mistake but you’re complaining about something that happened in the past.
3) Look at http://mos.millenium.org/matchups#NA. There’s a big point gap between 13 and 14 unfortunately, there had also been some recent transfers resulting in more skewed matchups. The point is that when you look at the table now, you’re getting a different opponent next week but there will still be a gap.

Guildcraft: Applying RTS logic to WvW

in WvW

Posted by: Bertrand.3057

Bertrand.3057

Ah, but there aren’t limitless resources, because supply is still required to bring your fortifications to the max tech level. As in RTS, when facing an enemy who can evenly match you head on, your success will come from doing everything in your power to ensure their economy struggles while keeping your own well-defended.

A few other important lessons that carry over:
You need to pay attention to the positioning of your forces, poorly positioned soldiers can do nothing for you.
Your forces should always be active/serving some purpose. This is usually easier in a game where all the soldiers are living people.
You have nothing to gain by engaging the enemy in a battle that can’t be won, unless it puts them out of position. Even then it’s better to retreat so that the threat given by your outnumbered group remains.
You have nothing to gain from winning a battle if you don’t seize the opportunities it opens up.

Spy/Troll Upgrades

in WvW

Posted by: Bertrand.3057

Bertrand.3057

The whole use of reporting as a solution sounds extremely problematic, since you don’t know for certain the motives or thinking behind an upgrade. Even wall upgrades can create an issue if they’re poorly timed.

One solution that hasn’t been mentioned is introducing more hard requirements for upgrades. So for structural upgrades you’d have a minimum supply, just like personnel upgrades, even if they’re not utilized right away. For personnel upgrades, you’d need to have more supply available if there’s also an active structural upgrade. You might also need to hold X number of supply camps feeding the tower or keep.

I realize that this makes upgrades harder to understand, although it isn’t that much of an issue because people should have an understanding of upgrades beyond the information given by the NPC before ordering them.

Confusion Should Be Nerfed in WvW

I specifically asked it that way to avoid the technicality argument. He replied: “necro, warrior, engineer, ranger” – two of which do not have a higher health pool than the mesmer.

Right. You challenged what he said, then you changed the question to imply he said something he didn’t say instead of actually addressing what’s actually being discussed. You’ve dodged the issue over and over again.

If you insist that confusion should be sustained damage, you miss the whole point of the condition which is that it’s one of those things that forces you as a player to change what you’re doing. It’s a very effective way of breaking up PvE-type play in PvP where someone’s habit is to just run at mobs at drop their combo, run condition cleanse and stun break when necessary, and otherwise ignore what the other player is doing. This is why confusion should apply its damage when players use heals and cleanses. High stacks disappear very quickly, waiting it out is somewhere between the equivalent of getting a long daze/stun placed on you. The difference is that you’re more likely to get an ally’s cleanse than an ally’s stun break.

If you are getting such high stacks of confusion on you in a fight that you can’t even give yourself a cleanse, that means you’ve let the mesmer lay down a combo on you that for another class might mean you should already be downed. Read your enemies better, if you can’t manage that have a second guy running condition removal. If someone hits you with a lot of confusion, will it hurt when you also get focused? Yes, but it’s the same as targeting any vulnerable player.

silvershadez:

Glass cannon thieves can and will die to everything and anything.
If the ele issue is one of confusion giving a proc when it shouldn’t, that’s something that should be addressed.
The engineer build sounds weak to me. But the best answer for them if they take a large confusion stack, which everyone has already stated, is to wait out the couple of seconds it takes to disappear.

Anyone who runs without condition removal, or runs a glass cannon build, or brings no stun breakers, is always running the risk of getting destroyed. Don’t know who you’re playing against that you can keep up 4-8 confusion stacks and 10+ bleeds, sounds like a PvE mob to me. Also not sure if you noticed, but there are skills that are actually AoE stuns.

Bertrand.3057

Certainly server WvW population collapses/explosions were never supposed to be part of the system, hopefully with paid transfers there won’t be such drastic population changes in the future. I understand you’re frustrated with keeping the old points, but it’s probably for the best for all the other servers who have found their balanced match.

Everyone here has pointed out the issues with a cap, and it’d make it harder for every server’s ranking to adjust appropriately to a match where a cap wasn’t necessary.

You have to remember that, given the way rankings and the WvW game mode are structured, it’s not about playing to win like in sPvP, it’s about playing your matchup. Every server has a different population so you’ll never get an entirely balanced match, you focus on the gains you can make.

If you give a handicap by limiting population size at off-peak, you make it harder for the ranking system to accurately determine where each server belongs in terms of rank. It looks like you’re from SBI, and Yak’s Bend is dominating? You won’t be facing them next week.

Yeah, I know it applies stacks of confusion. My point is you’re not supposed to take damage just by dodging, only by using a skill. Yes, you should take more damage if you dodge in and out of a glamour field and then use a skill than if you just use a skill. You certainly won’t get 25 stacks, you can’t walk in and out let alone dodge 25 times for the length of time that a glamour field is up.

Confusion Should Be Nerfed in WvW

I guess the sPvP and tPvP people were not able to L2P so confusion got nerfed there.

Again, confusion was buffed for PvE, and WvW as a side. sPvP is the original state of confusion.

Your argument needs a buff.

Confusion is less effective in WvW because it often involves larger fights over more open terrain. sPvP is a more restricted environment, since you’re fighting over small points with a small number of players with limited time. In this situation confusion is much more effective because it’s easier to apply and the control it provides has more impact on the outcome of a fight.

Since WvW has a real mix in terms of the combat it involves, confusion will be more effective in some situations and less effective in others.

Great argument. We should also increase the damage of all AoE by 100% in WvW since it is less effective in WvW than it is in sPvP.

And, of course… 5v5s never happen in WvW.

Confusion is only sometimes AoE, quite difficult to apply in a large fight, and is primarily a control tool. That is why it is more effective in sPvP. Please don’t reduce my arguments to one simple statement.

You made some fair points about confusion earlier, I think if those are addressed you’d be much more satisfied. You really haven’t given any evidence that confusion is overpowered in WvW, only that you’ve struggled with it and that you are against WvW having a different balancing standard from sPvP.

A lot of people have tried to help by explaining how you can counter numerous confusion stacks both in large and small fights, it’s really up to you to go and try those counters before you continue making a case against these builds.

It doesn’t make a difference to the argument. Why should 1v1s in WvW be easier for a confusion mesmer than 1v1s in sPvP?

Your brain needs a buff.

Neither WvW nor sPvP are balanced around 1v1.

You misunderstand selan, confusion is applied by exiting a glamour field but it should not damage you if you’re just using a dodge. I think it’s a fair point that having a traited dodges should not punish you when you are facing someone who uses confusion as a damage source.

That’s not an issue with confusion, it’s a problem with the way the mechanics currently operate. It needs to be addressed directly, not by nerfing a valid condition.

It’s very difficult for a mesmer to stack that much confusion on someone in the first place, if a mesmer has succeeded you can still wait it out; you likely won’t need to use your defensive abilities as a condition mesmer won’t be able to hit you hard with anything else.

If you’re in a group fight where you can’t wait it out, it’s impossible for a mesmer to drop large numbers of stacks on everyone so you should be getting condition removal from your allies.

Bertrand.3057

Victory is exaggerating. Gandara has never lost a matchup because some JP camping guild sat on our server, and I’ve never seen a guild of 20 let alone 30 players sitting in a puzzle. Saying that JP guilds are the cause for losing matchups is just making excuses, which I hope our server doesn’t have to resort to. Camping groups of over 5 is quite a rarity, and if they’re impeding enemy players then it doesn’t give any one server a disadvantage anyways. If a guild wants to hop on a server and do something useless like camping the puzzle or GvG, then they will. When you get more rewards from playing on the map in WvW, then laugh right back at the JP campers.

Like I said, I’ve never seen any guild cause real problems by not playing WvW while in WvW, and restricting the game mode isn’t a solution to a guild intent on doing its own thing. However, if you choose your objectives based on the players you have working with you and the opposition you face, then that sort of thing will never even bother you. Conceivably we would be better off if only organized guilds with fully geared level 80 characters were allowed to play when there were long queues, but we don’t expect that and it’s something we have to work around.

Part of this comes down to the whole PvE in WvW issue that has quite a bit of opposition. Whether it’s world completion or the puzzles, there are many who think that WvW would be better off without PvE elements, neglecting to realize that it is the PvE elements that draw in new players, giving them a motivation to participate and hopefully learn the game. This is supposed to be a cooperative game, and there’s a lot to WvW that new players won’t understand when they enter, so reach out to them. Take a look at your own attitude before you start judging others, you may have invested a lot of gold and time into the map but that doesn’t mean you own it more than anyone else.

If you want to have something to work towards in WvW, you have to be coordinating with everyone on your map, playing as a team. Getting one camp may not be a big deal, but there is real satisfaction if that ends up with capturing a keep. Set goals as a group that you can work towards, be prepared to adjust them, and see the big picture, but don’t get too hung up over what happens after you log out.

Mad King’s Clock Tower – Took me an incredibly long time, but there’s been no challenge like it.
Scavenger’s Chasm – Teamed up with a stranger to complete this one when it appeared, so it’s a good memory.

Since they reset the server ratings, the matchups will be chaos for the next few weeks, which means you won’t be stuck with the same colour or opponents if that has hitherto prevented you from getting map completion. There’s also a good chance that your server will end up in a matchup where it dominates the map so you can grab all the points.

Consider yourself, um, lucky, because you would probably have a much harder time if you tried to get map completion a month from now.

If you join us to play during the EU late night, you’ll find challenges that are different every night, but at the same time it’s a no-pressure environment because Gandara is strong during the daytime. Based on my experience I would say no, you won’t get huge lag. I am based in Western Canada and have been playing on an EU server since launch, there are times when the game gets laggy but this is the exception, not the rule. My typical experience is smooth gameplay, when the game does slow down it’s at EU primetime when the zergs are out in full force.

Keep in mind that unless you have a bizarre schedule, your WvW experience will be different just because you live in a different time zone.

Guild recruitment ideas

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Bertrand.3057

Bertrand.3057

Have you considered joining an existing guild? I’m not saying it’s impossible to have your own, but it’ll be a challenge for you to start up a successful guild with only a couple players on your roster. If your goal is to find people to play this game with, it’s much better served by finding the guild that’s right for you.

If you do want to build your own guild, it’s a lot of work and it’ll take perseverance and dedication to maintain. Forum posts or advertising on gw2guilds.org won’t really help you, the only way to really build up a guild is by meeting and interacting with others in-game, and if you find some guildless people, invite them. This is the same way you should find a guild to join if you choose to go that path instead (find good people, and ask to join).

However you decide to proceed, good luck!

Gandara is a tier 4 EU server looking for an American guild to help its beleaguered night shift
We are an inclusive Europe-based English-speaking server with a substantial UK contingent as well as many players from across Europe and the world. The free transfer deadline is fast approaching and Gandara is inviting any guild from across the pond still analyzing its options to consider our server.

Gandara has a friendly and close-knit community
Gandara’s players chat, share, and laugh with one another everyday on our shared teamspeak server and our server forums. If you join us, you’ll quickly get to know our server’s leaders who care about developing our community and helping new players get involved. Kinkywarrior, a dedicated Gandaran, wrote the basics of WvW guide you see stickied on these forums!

While we have guilds of varying size and skill, we do our best to learn from one another and we hope joining our server will help your guild to improve as well.

Transferring to Gandara will offer your guild exciting and challenging opportunities
If you move over to Gandara, you won’t be stuck with PvD or find yourself alone. While most of our guilds go to sleep by the time NA primetime hits, we always have night owls and a few committed guild members and leaders hanging on but without the organization that guilds provide, we’re vulnerable. Joining our server offers you the chance to take the lead and direct our operations at night, fighting against the large numbers that the French are able to sustain and developing a rivalry with American transfers on other servers.

At tier 4, unlike the top tiers, our matchups typically change from week to week; our longest sustained matchup was an intense 4-week struggle against Piken Square [EU] and Augury Rock [FR] that tested the mettle of our guilds and players. We’re also pretty well free of dirty play. While we get to face a variety of servers, at the same time we’re too high a tier to have absolutely lopsided matches.

Wait, who’s Bessie?
Someone long ago coined a name for the pack dolyaks that bring supply to our keeps and towers, and with a bit of insistence it’s stuck since. She does all that hard work, she deserves a name, respect, and love. Plus she has a scruffier beard than Uncle Sam, who wouldn’t want to be recruited by her?

I’ve said my peace for my server and I leave the decision to you. Feel free to ask questions here or drop a line to one of our server’s leaders:

I felt that you skirted around the question of why the wall was glitched and a portal made in the first place. You’re right that if it were my guild my first response wouldn’t be an apology, to me that’s just damage control because everyone saw that there were several KISS members involved. My response would be to ask hard questions both of the player who placed the portal and the players who used it. Portal isn’t something you slot or place without intent, so when you say it’s an accident it’s hard to believe you.

I am much more inclined to believe it was a mistake of judgment rather than a pure accident but you don’t indicate that. I certainly don’t think it was a coordinated effort, but when you sell bad stories this leads to conspiracy theories.

As well, after having taken the keep with an unfair advantage, a couple of you had the audacity to belittle the efforts of the defenders. I think we agree the keep would not have held indefinitely with that sustained pressure but our players felt they were doing important work by holding down your manpower so there was no need to add insult to injury. If you sincerely regret that the portal disrupted the fight then why reverse that position and say it was inconsequential? The fighting has otherwise been clean so it’s not like we were going to say AG relies on exploits, we’re just extremely frustrated that this happened and demand better answers from a prominent guild.

As for the whole nightcap rant, it was low of me to be trying to get a rise out of you and I apologize. Our lack of night coverage is a server weakness and I hope you understand that it hurts to take a hit there.

Was there a reason why a portal was made in the first place? Was it really just an off-chance that someone discovered the one portal glitch in hills in the middle of an attack, while making a portal for no apparent reason? I play a mesmer, portal is not one of those skills that you just randomly spam. This isn’t a new glitch, it’s something that’s been known for a while, there are videos and screenshots on this forum and you must think us really naive if we are to believe that not one of you have ever heard of this.

All I see is a bunch of covering your kitten and saying that the portal wasn’t important, of course if AG sincerely regretted this they would have handed the keep back, as was standard in the days of orb-hacking. They have the night numbers, so I’m sure they’d have it back in 10 minutes.

Maybe I’m getting a bit frustrated again like last night and not thinking clearly, so I’ll lay the facts out as I see them and see if you can deny any of the following:
1. A portal was laid that was outside the inner gate, with no legitimate purpose intended, and happened to be in the one widely known glitch location in hills.
2. Someone called for this portal to be used while the gate was still up, a number of KISS members used it and one ported back while the others were killed.
3. This diverted attention from the gate UNTY was attacking, which Gandara had been repairing and which had all but 1 of the catapults used against it destroyed. There is no place for “if” statements but it ceased being a fair fight at this point.
4. Hills was subsequently taken and held by AG, AG guilds were able to move onto defending other objectives and Gandara received a formal apology but no reparations.

I saw a lot of good players grind themselves down trying to cover night shifts back when we were fighting FR (they had round-the-clock coverage back then), that kind of self-destructive behaviour isn’t to be applauded or encouraged.

Granted some people come over from different time zones, but as much as you might read my posts as whining, it’s just a fair call. Maybe it stings a little to hear the truth. AG ought to stop slapping themselves on the back for beating 5-10 players with their zerg and numbers across the map.

much respect to Gandara+Dzagonur servers for great night of fights….especially at Veloka+Jerrifers on EB.

I think it’s the NPCs you want to thank, not the players.

Yup, I wasn’t online at unearthly hours. But if you have to wait for most of our guilds to log off and the maps are clear of defenders before it’s safe for you start playing, I guess that’s your game.

A tip to the people replying directly to the original post: Often, people will come on these forums, make threads about these where they complain about something they misunderstand, then disappear. Usually you can tell whether a topic of this kind is worth jumping in based on whether or not the OP ever makes a second post.

This topic’s OP, iSmack, is not one of those people. He took the time to read the replies and took as much as he could from them. Let’s appreciate the fact that he came here to learn other players and extend him the same courtesy of reading follow-up posts. That is all

How to best gear up as a WvW player

Look at this and figure out what combination works for your build/playstyle: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Equipment_acquisition_by_stats

Best thing to do for gear I think is speed running dungeons (some paths can be done in 10 minutes), as you get both tokens and gold, CoF and AC are the most popular.

Only a WvW player would deem climbing or failing to climb the tower in Blue Keep Valley just to build a treb/cata that few can reach worthwhile.

Only a WvW player would repeatedly attempt to seize that tower from the enemy camping it with just one guardian at his side.

(Much respect to the enemy guardian who bubbled me off twice before I got a friend to give me aegis)

Zero Incentive for support guardians

in WvW

1. Make sure you understand this.
2. The only time you will have an issue tagging with any build is if you are running solo in a zerg. Which begs the question, why are you playing a support build if you’re just running on your own? Your healing and damage mitigation just melts into the chaos of the fray, so your rewards are really in proportion to how visible they are. Being a team member doesn’t just mean playing a support role, it means being part of an organized force. When you are part of a guild, or at least in a party that is working together, your contributions will be much more visible and your rewards will increase in kind.

I don’t think this is something that needs to be addressed by Anet, it’s a good incentive for everyone to stop running around on their own.
