^ this.
if you really want to be good you should play all the classes a little bit, that way no matter what class you end up “maining” you will understand how to beat the other classes better.
^ This.
First things first, I do not think I am the best player in the game. I also do not believe I’m the worst. I assume I’m mediocre because the game offers no way for me to gauge my ability (which is sort of the topic of this post).
I’ve been playing this game on and off since launch, but have hardly played anything else recently. I feel that over the past few months I’ve made decent progress in regards to my “skill level”, evidence of which being personal perception coupled with an increase in compliments from people I play with/against.
I really wanna try my hand in competitive play. My question is how do I break into the scene?
It’s common knowledge that the leaderboard rewards quantity over quality. We have MMR, but we aren’t allowed to view it for whatever reason. So how am I supposed to know where I stand, how do I know if I’m good enough to play competitively, and how do I know which areas of my gameplay I need to improve?

I know the Abjured as a team is good and they’re all good on a personal skill level, but they can’t be THAT much better individually than everyone else… right? I’m sure their comp plays a role in their success.
Just remove the personal scoreboard. In a team based game, personal scores mean nothing anyway. All the personal scoreboard does is give people a reason to rage (sometimes unjustly) at people with less points.
The only issue I have with turret engis is that they can leave their turrets on one point and move to another.
Oooooooooh snap, so thats whats causing it?
I thought I was going crazy.
^ This a million times. I’m fairly new to necro and had never seen this happen before today. O_O
They put a lot of effort into this
Really? i actually dont think Anet put any effort at all in spvp, since day one. It has been the least popular mode since lunch and you have the same 5 maps you had since. I mean, maps people, it chump change for anet to sit down a couple of artists and a programer and release a new map every couple of months, yet the game mode that needs support the most is the one that gets the least.
Spvp and pvp in general need
-Reduced particle effects.
-UI customization options, full moding alas WOW.
-Needs to slow down a lot.
-Needs to bring the trinity back.
-Needs casts bars.
I disagree with every suggestion you made aside from decreased particle effects.
Take out the rocket turret, then take out the engi. It’s really that simple. If you’re pure melee and can’t get to the rocket turret, move to another point or wait till you have a friendly near that can focus it.
If I have an hour to play, half of that time should not be spent afk in HoTM waiting for a qpop while I read facebook.
If you only have half an hour maybe playing an MMO is a terrible idea.
Firstly, I said an hour, not half an hour. Secondly, it was an exaggeration, I admit, but still a valid one nonetheless. My point is that if I have a limited amount of time to play, I shouldn’t have to play another game or entertain myself elsewhere while I’m waiting to play the game I want to play.
If I have an hour to play, half of that time should not be spent afk in HoTM waiting for a qpop while I read facebook.
Here’s wondering why HA (Heroes’ Ascent), a simple Team Death Match with few extra mechanics did far more better in GW1 than GW2 is doing (PvP).
Why do they have to go after all these gimmicky game modes, mix moba, conquest, buffs, and all the other things.
I think there’s a great demand in the community for pvp game modes that require nothing but pvp. Whether the community is asking for wvw style arenas for gvg, 8v8s akin to those in gw1, or 3v3 or 2v2 arenas, the basic concepts are all the same; no gimmicks, just players killing players.
-snip-
Because we don’t have Monks and proper supporters/interrupters.
But we do! With the proper team coordination, everyone supports each other. As for interrupts, we have daze, fear, knockback, pull, and stuns. Again, interrupts are easy to coordinate in a team environment.
I may get flamed for this here, but I am a player who spends the majority of my time in game spent in pvp who still enjoys wvw. My only issue with it is the scale of the encounters. I think a 5v5 or 8v8 style gamemode sounds incredible.

yeah sorry, thanks what I meant. It’s my display name that’s the issue.
I submitted a support ticket on January 8th requesting an display name change. The display name was changed, but I still randomly see my old display name in places (guild menu, leaderboards).
I brought this issue up immediately after it was changed, and got this in reply:
“When a display name is changed, it can take time for that change to update across all servers. This can result in your previous display name being visible to you when changing maps, especially when traveling to WvW or guesting in other worlds. So please allow a few days for your new display name to become visible in all areas of the game and on the forums, as well.”
It’s almost been a month since this change and I’m still seeing it :/ halp anet

I knew the answer to this before we ever had dev confirmation. Arenanet has seemingly no clue what its playerbase wants. If they do know, they don’t care. They’ll force feed us content no one wants and pretend its working until ncsoft cuts them off.
“We may never do them”
Have you tried playing engi? I used to cry about slick shoes, too, until I tried engi, learned how slick shoes works, and learned how to counter it.
^ what this guy said.
I’m positive most of the issues with matchmaking is due to low population. Here’s to hoping Stronghold doesn’t suck and that this expansion brings new faces to pvp.
I play on NA so unfortunately I can’t participate, but I love what this guild’s trying to do. Hopefully this will bring lots of new teams to EU. Who knows, maybe some new super group will pop up and turn some heads.

We won, but not fun.. I just wish there was a minimum entry to join ranked.
obviously someone swapped to ranger on your team… it’s in your chat.
still, 4 rangers is just silly. who seriously thought these dailies were a good idea?
edit: it appears you were all for them swapping to ranger as well… not really sure why you come on here complaining about a match not being fun due to team comp when you helped contribute to that comp being what it was.
This picture was taken from Noscoc’s stream.
’Nuff said. Balance this nonsense please.
Edit: This was a match between 4 top tier players + 1 dev vs 5 turret engis. I don’t recall the final score, but it was pretty close.
(edited by Boggs.6482)
Nah, instead of nerfing the three classes that make best use of might stacking and the cele amulet, they nerfed everyone who uses might!
Because, you know, if EVERYONE hits for less damage, then the celestial eles will be easier to kill, right?
+1, a little communication goes a long way towards a happy community.
Posts like this are 100% the reason Anet has the communications policy they do. This community tends to expect and assume the worst as it is, and things like /gw2drama are only making it worse.
Also, quoted for truth:
I don’t see the problem with him asking what Noscoc is running. He could’ve been running something that isn’t the meta so…. you guys are just being jerks.
The GW2 PvP community as a whole feels a hell of a lot like a high school drama-wise.
(Edited for grammar.)
I’m a little confused about the whole “Build Wars 2” stuff, tbh. I mean… this IS a team oriented game, and a team’s composition plays a huge part in their success. For instance, if Phanta decided to play thief along side Toker’s thief, your teams comp would be compromised and your team wouldn’t perform as well… right?
I just don’t see the issue with a team making informed decisions about their team composition. Just because they technically counter you doesn’t mean they have the player skill to win.
My name is Boggs and I endorse these ideas.
I tried the ignore it all approach, but those 3 wiggly chests on the lower right drive me crazy during a game. Glad I’m not alone at least!
I actually ignore then until they automatically fill into my bags. Problem is, my bags are always full of useless junk, so I’m immediately encumbered and have to deal with it all anyway. ;n;

I actually alt-tab out during queues now to entertain myself, and have missed more queues than ever before.
Take out the rocket turret and they’re no problem. Also, classes with strong AOE do well against their AI.
Nope, you’re completely correct. My friends list is looking the same way. I’m also constantly adding friends, yet it seems to dwindle with every passing day. Even worse, it’s only making the issues worse.
People quit because matchmaking is broken and setting them up against premades, so as a result there are less people queueing. This means more premades vs solo.
It’s okay, the game won’t be too long gone in 6 months when a fix comes in…
… right?
So let me get this straight.
If your broken matchmaking system gives us a team with 5 rangers and 4 of us swap to a preferable comp and win, we get no reward because we didn’t play it the way your matchmaking wanted us to play it?
I swear to god, it seems like Anet wants this game to fail. You’re doing a great job, boiz, keep it up!
The answer is a simple one that’s been repeated over and over on these forums: dwindling population.
1113322, 4 days and counting.
Still waiting for a response. This is actually game breaking to me, and if my support ticket is reviewed, my reasoning will be understood.
My connection usually sits around 15ms and I still get these bugs from time to time.
It’s not a bug. Not considered by the developers? Sure. But that includes a lot of other stuff in the game too.
People have been using the same exact mechanic since the beginning of the game.
Direct your mad somewhere else and not at the players.
^
While I agree that this is clearly broken, Phanta’s right here. The blame shouldn’t fall on the players as Anet has had years now to change it and has done nothing. It can only be assumed that it is working as intended.
There are tricks like this in almost every game I’ve played. If the devs think it’s game breaking, they’ll patch it or treat it as an exploit. But they haven’t.
Then again it’s Anet.
(edited by Boggs.6482)
It’s absolutely possible. This new implementation is extraordinarily buggy and exploitable.
I for one am not concerned with the leaderboard. It rewards time spent in game over player performance.
On the other hand, a dev confirmed that, assuming you’re only worried about your win rate, you could leave every losing game before the timer and it won’t count. You can literally manipulate the system to keep a 100% win rate.
Typical Anet. They refuse to implement test servers, opting to roll out untested, unfinished, broken changes to systems that were working decently, despite being flawed.
It sincerely seems like Anet is trying to drive players away from the game. Oh well, I’ll ride it out as long as I am still having a little bit of fun. There will always be freeshards in the future.

Bring back our solo queues.
Same issue here.
Go figure; Anet creates an “event” for top leaderboard players yet does nothing when players report leaderboards being broken.
gg Anet
What nerf..one person can almost continually still disable siege, two can.
The nerf they should have made is for each disabler to only disable ONE piece of siege.
Yes, and the cooldown should be on the siege, not the disabler. I don’t care if they can insta-throw disablers as long as a piece of siege can only be disabled once every x # of secs.
Well, it’s been 24 hours now. Still nothing.

Three days for someone to unlink an authenticator for her so that she can use a product she’s already purchased? Absurd.
@ Behellagh: there should be absolutely no issue, as we have provided all of the information they asked for, including her serial number.
@pdavis: thanks, I’ve already read those.
My wife’s account is tied to an authenticator on her old broken iPhone. She can’t log in. We submitted a support ticket last night and have still yet to hear anything. The automated email reply was sent 15 hours ago.
Come on, Anet.
+1 Great idea!
It would be even better, if the voice would defend the stuff for us and just hand us over the bags.
That way we wouldn’t have to actively play WvW, because obviously we can’t even be bothered to open up the map every once in a while to check if there is anything contested. And think of all those poor people who actually have to stand in a tower/keep to defend it, when they could be on the TP making the real money!
Come on man… this dude’s just voicing his opinion. If you don’t like it, why don’t you try being constructive? No reason to be a smart kitten to the fella…
What’s life like for an engineer main?
kittening awesome.
Try it for yourself and see whatcha think. Just stick with it for a bit. There’s lots of buttons to learn.
If I were in her shoes, I would have continued to follow, and made it a point to become a rallybot just to kitten em over…
But then again I’m an kitten. /shrug
Only a WvW player will keep reviving this thread every 29 days just to spite ANet.
Every 29 days from this point forward, on absolutely every single thread that’s about to hit “necro” age, I will quote you saying this.
You made my day.
“…RIP thread, when it gets seen.”
[/quote]
“When it gets seen.”
lol
that’s cute.
Its not a cheat. Its an abuse of an unintended mechanic (ie reviving not caring if there is a wall between the reviver and revivee).
It is however an equal opportunity abuse. AoE doesnt care about walls either and a zerg is highly likely to kill whoever is trying to revive from behind the gate. Guardian stavess and all manners of AoE kill everything.
+1
You are far better off accepting it as being part of the game design and going on about your life. I guarantee you will never receive an answer from any Anet employee on this matter, nor will we receive a timely fix if any at all.
^ I’d like to see commander tags granted free of charge to players with specific WvW rank.
