If you’re serious about pve, yeah you should really just go GS. PVE damage is one of warriors greatest strengths, and you should play to it imo.
Axe can arguably be used as an alternative to a GS build because it can reach similar dps, but GS is usually the first choice.
I think you already have a good sense of it, but yeah sword shouldn’t really be used for dps without a condi build. The exception would be if you want to use it specifically for the leap (which is fantastic), or the immob.
Hammer DPS is not awful so you can use it as your main dps, then use sw/mace for the utility and extra stun, which should be fun.
frankly I like the design of these abilities. You actually need to set them up with cc to use them reliably. I wish more classes were designed like this.
I could see an argument for reducing their cast times or channel duration slightly (since it’s difficult to land them even with cc), but that’s debatable.
^yeah. That’s one of the things that makes warrior condi builds weak, it’s constant bleed application with little else to cover them, which almost guarantees it’ll be removed first
no movement speed buffs stack, the game just uses the highest individual increase you have on you
It’s hard for me to recommend axe for spvp these days because it gets kited easily. If you’re hell bent on using axe, then you already have probably the best build to make it work. You could try longbow with it as an alternative.
Frankly though, it’s going to be very tough running anything besides a hammer build, or GS/LB on warrior. Hammer builds require teamwork to reach their full effectiveness too.
Boon stripping (from necro/mesmer)
Or just good ol focused fire. Most only run one defensive cd/stunbreak, and don’t have great disengage abilities. So not terrible to take down if you can team up on them.
I’m not sure however, what the best class to deal with them for a 1v1 would be.
I started at around 800 rank, and have kinda inched up since then. I’ve done very few premades ever (sometimes with a couple friends not over voip, or forming a group with a good solo q pug for a few matches).
And yes, maybe there is some Euro/NA difference. I don’t often get matched up against premades, probably ~10% of matches. Even then premade quality isn’t always that high, can still be beaten sometimes.

Not trying to claim that I’m amazing or anything, but I’ve managed to progress up to #298 atm doing solo queue as War. Some if it’s luck of the draw, I only have 60% wins, and matches are almost always very close.
TBH I think it just comes down to making small, good decisions more than anything. There’s been a lot of close losses where I think of something stupid I did that could have got some more points. Usually just choosing to fight outnumbered when I could use my mobility to take the other point.
I’ll give it a try, especially because stun juggling is fun, but I agree with Zone on both points here. There’s not a lot of condi damage here, no poison, and bleeds are easily cleared. I also worry about the lack of condi clears.
However, I do think “HGH warrior” has some merit. I’ve just found it works better as power based with a side of condi damage, not the other way around.
Also isn’t sigil of battle still bugged to not work with crit effects? Do you know if the sigil combos you posted work as intended?
(edited by Brigg.6189)
yup, that’s a good list
I don’t think it shows up as a loss, but it does hurt their rating. So yeah, if you see a 900 ranked player with a 95% win ratio, that’s probably why.
are you joining maps with very low player counts? A lot of people like to take an unpopulated room to use for duels, since there’s no other way to do it.
As far as “abuse” in general. Doesn’t seem any worse lately, but sure you always find some players with big mouths from time to time. Just ignore it or find another room imo.
why use a warrior here and not a ranger?
You’re comparing missing out on a couple weapon/armor skins to missing out on 90% of the game’s content.
Is the problem that there’s not enough low level skins, or just that some exist that you won’t be able to obtain(in a reasonable amount of time)?
If it makes you feel better, pretend the high rank stuff doesn’t exist. It doesn’t impact the pvp at all.
awesome awesome
Nicely written build guide, but frankly shout builds have been tried many many times for warrior without success in tpvp.
D/D ele is probably most comparable to your build here. It’s going to be providing similar buffing, condi cleansing, and dps; but more healing, cc, and surviveability.
Great for pve, in pvp there’s too many skills that are more crucial for either delivering or avoiding damage.
Yeah, it’s going to be a lot about your premade team, shouldn’t be suprising.
Same with the guys with low wins. I’d assume they joined a premade with players that were already high ranked, got matched against high ranks, and got their wins there.
Again, more info would be appreciated, but this is a great start.
Clearly players are going to want more (longer list, actual rating displayed) but for the moment…
Thanks Devs!
i dont really think longer list is essential as long as there will be some place on my profile that says my place in the ladder, like " your are number 9999", i guess this will be faster and easier to implement. but really nice work!
also, question, is rating character specific? not account? it seems like it is with that “character” tab.
It’s account, they just displayed last character used.
Clearly players are going to want more (longer list, actual rating displayed) but for the moment…
Thanks Devs!
I didn’t say it wasn’t justified, I’m just tired of reading it. Despite everything, I actually like playing this game’s pvp, and I like reading constructive posts that help me improve.
^troo
official forms just kinda tend to be like that though. I like 3rd party sites better. Less trolls, and nobody expecting devs to pay attention to their crap posts.
Problem is pvp has always been a bit of a niche. I think most games I’ve played have called it about 5-10% of the pop that actually participates on a regular basis.
But I mean, personally I completely agree. I like the pve and WvW, but sPVP is kind of the one thing that never gets old for me.
Any active forums dedicated to pvp or with a good tpvp section?
It’s just hard to wade through the qq and armchair dev posts here. Just wondering if there’s any alternatives.
^ I think something like that is the best idea. I’d start only with trait granted ICDs also, no items.
yeah, it’s a nice idea, I just don’t know how they’d do it cleanly
… LB is a great tpvp weapon…
It’s massive, point clearing aoe damage, and #5 can be used for a full duration HB without frenzy.
Frankly I’m still running GS/LB. Using defektive’s build right now because the LB damage emphasis is unaffected by frenzy nerf.
LB #3 → GS #3 is still amazing aoe damage.
I was pretty sure this was always an incorrect tooltip, and was actually 3s duration.
Could it have been a stealth buff?!
^ hight burst can work, but it’s difficult to pull off with the evades. Look to actually land a cc chain, then burst imo. It’s just hard to do solo.
Anyone have an example build of this? Just want to get an idea what they’re working with.
Yeah, I run similar: 20 20 0 30 0.
Picking up shouts is 20-30% DPS loss over a typical GS build using same gear, excluding the benefits of boon duration (which is noticeable imo).
You gain ~+40% personal healing + similar for other players in range.
There’s other ways to get healing that you could argue is better cost/benefit, but I’ve been reasonably happy running this.
free tournaments
Wow, 180 from where I expected this post to go. Totally agree. Game is lacking in areas sure, but it’s progressing and frankly there is no pvp game I’d rather be playing right now. All of them are flawed, and gw2 is the most fun for me.
Don’t like it.
- - Class balance needs to be completely redone to accommodate this. All the healing skills and traits built in the game all have to be replaced. Not going to happen, maybe GW3. I’m not saying existing class balance is perfect, but redoing it all is unrealistic.
- - Your removing of healing may have tactical impact, but it effectively just means more downtime in between fights… or an autoloss if you’re foolish enough to engage a new fight with low health. This is something that’s slowly been phased out of mmo combat because downtime isn’t fun, and lopsided fights aren’t fun.
yeah if you haven’t yet, try GS / Sword+WH. Amazing mobility. Make sure you have the auto-targeting feature off so you can disengage alright.
You’ll have all dps teams blowing each other out of the water in seconds.
Full DPS teams get blown out of the water in WoW arenas too.
Luckily WoW, and GW2, have these things called healing and damage mitigation that serve to increase survivability and lengthen fights. Rocket science, really.
Team deathmatch would work fine in GW2, it’s just a matter of ArenaNet not being lazy on innovation.
because healing in gw2 is just as viable as in wow amirite?
1- Learn basic mechanics/capabilities of your class
2- Learn the popular high level build(s) for your class (watch steams, read)
3- Study and practice a basic strategy for your build, develop your muscle memory with it
4- Learn popular builds/strats for other classes, especially ones you feel weakest against, learn how to counter them(watch streams, play it yourself some)
5- Practice, duel, get feedback and advice from other players
^ This is the order I’d take in trying to improve. #3 might actually be the most important there. Just being able to execute a solid combos or openers quickly and efficiently, and working on reaction time, stun breaks, movement/positioning. Needs to all become things you don’t have to think about, so you can concentrate on what’s happening around you.

Well, I was in hotjoin yesterday experimenting with support mesmer builds.
So yeah, I guess I was in there because tournies are more accessible now, and I want to work on good team oriented types of builds to be successful there.
Devs have said that the game isn’t designed for arena style team play. You’ll have all dps teams blowing each other out of the water in seconds.
With conquest style you break up the game into smaller fights and at least introduce a little bit of role diversity.
ehh I like it a lot too. I even main warrior. Maybe something’s wrong with me. Just being able to switch pvp classes, builds, and gear at will, with no true gear grind gets huge points in my book.
It’s a tough match for sure. I’d say that a good mesmer should win, but it’s easy to take out poor/mediocre ones. A good mesmer should be able to prolong the fight and avoid damage with phase retreat/blurred frenzy/blink/decoy long enough to wear the warrior down.
Typically it’s going to go like this:
Warrior has to avoid shatter damage
Mesmer has to avoid longbow aoe (if applicable), and kite properly
Warrior needs to put enough pressure out to force blink/decoy, then land 100b cleanly with phase retreat on cd
fastcar, could you post a mists vid or build of your best warrior setup for healing? I’d like to do some personal testing like you’ve suggested; comparing different classes. Is that a fair way to evaluate the strength of warrior healing, or do you find that it scales out of the mists better than other classes? (Ignoring the argument about heal practicality/range, which I get).
Let me start with an example: I think it was the Dec. update where warrior Axe 1, combo #3, was changed to not be overridden by manual pressing 1 again (which would stop the #3 combo and do combo #1 instead). However, it still can be overridden by other axe abilities.
So this example makes me think there’s a hidden priority system for abilities. Some abilities (especially defensive ones), can override and ability of less importance. Dodge seems to be highest importance, and takes priority over everything I’ve come across.
I think there’s sound reasoning here. There’s cases where you may want to stop what you’re doing and do something different. CC, dodges, and heals come to mind. Other times you want to complete whatever it is you’re casting. It seems like the game is making some best guesses on which to do based on the ability.
I’d suggest doing some manual testing on this. Try a couple of abilities, and see if other abilities consistently take precedence. Might learn some tricks to put you ahead of the curve.
I’d be more inclined to take warhorn condition→boons if it worked for the whole party, but I’m fairly certain it doesn’t.
shout healing unnoticeable? 3576 x5 people = 17880 total healing every 20s without any +healing used. Imagine if you stacked a couple shout wars.
Just do the free tournaments? I do queues with 1 other person often, and it works great.
its just got so much charisma for a class
