The Shroud is a excuse for ANet to don’t give to the Necromancer any single defensive skill.
At our best we can use a Spectral Armor (that grant protection and LF) and Wurm. With the reaper we obtained Rise!, that worked good, the reason why they nerfed it. In sPvP, all the other “defensive” skills are really useless.What ANet think about the survavibility of the Necromancer explained once for all:
1) Double HP bar.
2) Some bad teleport skill + damage reduction by protection and minions
3) Corrupt the enemy boons to make it weak and kill it without mercy
4) Chill it to keep it in rangeBut we have the same old problems from years:
1) Life Force is NOT a second HP bar. It’s design upon the necromancer make it both our best defensive and offensive ability, making us chose if we want to survive 2 seconds more under a focus or use it to inflict our damage. Why out of the Shroud our damage is really WEAK compared to all the other classes. Our best chance to inflict damage was Deathly Chill, now nerfed to a barely useless trait, good only for the RS5+RS4 combo, that frequently miss half of it’kitten why the enemy easly move away from our attack range. And that’s our only “burst” skill. Then if we chose to die instead of spend all our LF to survive a little more and keep our best (and sometimes only) damage ability and combo, we have to find the best moment to active it, why a dps build can strip us away from RS in 4 seconds. Sometimes in team Fight I’m not able to end the RS5+4 combo before the enemy strip me away from the RS.
Then, the Shroud is NOT a defensive skill, only a way to make us chose if we want to inflict good damage or survive 2-4 seconds longer. I like that thing, force us to play better, but in the current meta that thing is making us too many problems.2)With no damage immunuty or blocks, we have only few bad damage reduction and 1 bad teleport (if the work is killed we lost our only way to flee from a fight…).
Then, i will be ok about damage reduction skills. We can’t totally block damage? ok, we have a a traited Spectral Armor that grant us Protection for 9 seconds and a lot of LF. That’s good! But then you see that the majority of the other classes have Passive damage reduction skills and Permanent Protect, that make our few bad defensive options look as what they are: bad try to survive a little longer why all the others can survive five times better without just two block skills.
The HP amount don’t make a class a Bunker or even able to Self Sustain itself. The enemy have to inflict to us up to 40k of damage to kill us if we active all our skills, then why we’re killed by any clas sin the game (and by some of them really really fast) and a class like the Dragonhunter survive ten time better than us? The reason is one: Strong Active Defensive skills. A dps DH build have up to 17 seconds of Block (14 of them by the traited F3, that also make them able to fight using a directional block) and 3 seconds of Immunity that also recharge it’s Virtues. 20 seconds of survavibility. Plus 3 blocks by the Focus 5 and a lot of Blinds.
Then, a build with 17k of hp survive ten time better and longer than a class with 40k of HP+LF.
That’s why a 3 sec of Immunity during a Focus can block up to 18-20k of damage.
The necromancer Need true defensive skills, not only bad defences that any other class can obtain easly and frequently in a permanent way.3) ANet think that another way to make us survive is to grant us the ability to Corrupt boons. And, guys, that Worked! Incredibly Worked!!!
Until there was a bunker meta, able to inflict only medium damage and with really few classes/builds able to make a Burst or even high damage, and also that builds was truly Berserker builds, with only few defences and easy to kill.
in the previous meta the game granted to some bunkers to inflict similar damage as a dps (celestial tempest) but Now the meta grant to a lot of classes a chance to play Totally Berserker and Survive as a Bunker.
Now corrupt the boons of the enemy don’t make it weaker in damage, not enough to make us survive.
Against the old cele-ele we was the only class able to win why we’re able to corrupt it’s protection and might stack, making it killable like all the other classes and unable to inflict it’s insane direct and condition damage. Now we’re facing classes that are able to strip away half of our hp without even the need of a single buff. And they’re also able to stack might, becoming even more dangerous for us.
Actually a Boon Corruption playstyle don’t even grant the chance to kill anyone, not even to survive to anyone.4) We’re unable to keep the enemy in range. That’s why Anet made all the movement and teleport skills be unaffected by Chill, don’t reducing they’re movement ability at all, still while under the effect of Chill. Also Chill is lesser spammable than before (but there’s a good reason, at the beginning the Chill was a little too much. Anyway, now that don’t even inflict damage there’s no more reasons to keep it hard spammable, but it’s like it is and ANet will not change that).
Counting that any other class have a lot of movement skills, we’re totally unable to keep the enemy in our range. That’ because a lot of fights ends with the Reaper in Shroud that try to catch the enemy without a single chance to reach him, wasting it’s shroud.The necromancer lack in more or less anything that make him able to survive under a enemy focus, have not mobility, the corruption ability had been enanched by a lot with the scepter buff but is useless to defend yourself against the insane dps of the actual meta (and sometimes is useless because different classes can spam boons and clean condis so much that all our work last for 2 seconds and then is like nothing happen), our damage is weak out of the Shroud and the Shroud is our only way to attack and defend, forcing us to chose if we want to survive or inflict damage, sometimes making us unable to do both the things, and we have not a single way to force the enemy to stand in melee (unless he want to stay in melee because can kill us in few seconds without mercy).
From the moment the bunker meta has gone, we’re totally a free kill for a large amount of classes and builds and our work is even harder why differetn classes have more boon spam and condi clean than before and others have more survavibility and damage than before.
We’re the last weel of this meta. The only reason we’re still on our feets is why we’re able to corrupt boons instead of only remove it. Nothing more.
solution every team that wins gets a queue to a second round giving a timer for 10 secs if any 1 want to leave add a random player from queue to that next match simple like old gw1, i really have no idea why you guys dont implement simple stuff like that.
Part of the problems within the past year is that the dev’s visions of necromancers got changed and do not match reality. For awhile it did, back during HoT beta weekends when Robert Gee showed us how promising Reapers were. We had access to chill to keep enemies close, we had added sustain via blighter’s boon to compensate for our lack of active defense, and we finally got some personal stab so we aren’t tossed around like a ragdoll as much. Remember those Robert Gee appreciation threads on both necro & mesmer forums? I praised our savior Robert Gee for giving us an elite spec that I thought was fun, action filled, engaging, and competitive. And I was running mostly power reaper builds back then.
So what happened when HoT launched…
-First nerf came in on blighter’s boon, while some say it became better for soloers, it effectively made us worse in team fight situations (where reapers really belong).
-While Power enthusiasts were asking for Greatsword buffs, they buffed Scepter instead, pushing the meta further towards condi. Apparently spamming scepter auto is fun to someone on the class balance team.
-Then the nerf to chill came down hard. Chill damage was overtuned, even necros admit to that. But they didn’t just nerf chill damage, they stripped chill damage completely and replaced it with bleed. They also at the same time nerfed chill duration all around, so we can no longer keep enemies close. I can’t remember the last time anybody complained about chill during this past season, and I wonder why.
-In the same patch where chill got gutted, they nerfed our reaper shroud 3 stab uptime. They reduced our stab uptime and increased the cd on it. This hurt more than you can imagine, because I’m once again tossed around like a ragdoll. Pulled, pushed, knocked down, stunned, dazed, feared, all common occurrence now when you’re in a team fight against worthy, competent opponents.
By now all viable power reaper builds went out of the window, Robert Gee’s vision of Reapers disappeared. Nerfing chill for sake of balancing condi meta directly affected power reaper builds as well
-Of course everybody knows about the latest Rise nerf. While I can understand this same type of nerfs to other classes that have active defense, this nerf on us really hurt. We still have to use it because it’s either this or spectral armor. But let’s not sugar coat this, this was a harsh nerf.
They pretty much sold us a vision of a wonderful elite spec that upgraded baseline necros and made us better. We had viable power & condi reaper builds that were both competitive but not overpowering at HoT launch. Then they chopped it all up and we’ve seen a steady string of nerfs since HoT. All this because Anet is incapable of balancing sPvP and giving each classes multiple viable builds.
Bottom line is right now, condi reaper is still viable in competitive play. But we are easily trained down, easily cc’ed, and we are only dangerous when we are left alone which we almost never are against competent players. In WvW power is still viable in large scale zergs but the boonshare meta has made things more difficult for us; there are more boons than we can corrupt and power damage is reduced by all sorts of protection boons and damage mitigation. In PvE…well who cares, PvE is easy in GW2 no matter what class you play.
So yeah, I guess we’ll have to wait until the next expansion to hear from Robert again, and see what he’s gonna sell us next. If it wasn’t for the new Capricorn map being fun, I doubt I would be playing this game right now.

Correct me if i’m wrong… but this sounds more like a bug fix than a nerf seeing as the point of reveal is to prevent the thief from using multiple stealth attacks in a short period of time. Seeing as it hits hard as balls and has no real cost even when it fails it’s not hard to see why you might want it to have some limitations.
misssing a backtstab didnt reveal you landing a backstab on a aegis didnt reveal you , now it goes on 2 sec cooldown so if you miss the backstab ur done need to re stealth to try again
Tbh, I would go back to my “vanilla” Necro build in a heartbeat if it had a leap… That’s literally the only thing I’d miss from Reaper, haha… I’m weird.

I agree with flow that well of power is a good utility skill but i dont think there is currently a build that really can use it well.
I wish they would remove well of darkness and give us a good support well instead.
And for well of blood it heals for less then the mesmer well of eternity without healingpower (with healingpower this changes since it has better scaling), has a longer casttime, a longer cooldown and doesnt remove conditions (unless you use the light field but woe is also a light field so mehh) and woe has a shorter duration. So i would argue well of blood definitely needs a buff in numbers.
It’s sad to think that Well of Darkness was actually a viable option in WvW with Chilling Darkness, before it had an ICD. Then they gave it an ICD and back to the grave it went.

Autoattacking is more valuable than Reaper’s Shroud #4. What the hell. Since when? What have happened?

Edit: As far as axe, I was never a fan of it mostly for stupid reasons (I didn’t like the way the AA looked). I will openly admit that’s a silly reason not to use it, but I have no idea of its effectiveness otherwise. So I won’t argue that one either way, and just say that this is still a buff, even if it isn’t enough of one.
mm is only decent at pve because of the death novas and is mostly 2 skill rise and lich mark and is a condi build….now for pvp or wvw no 1 use it at a competitive level why may you ask is becase is bad…..

I’m not sure what you guys are all on about. Necro can be so amazingly tanky, it’s just ridiculous. Blood magic + death magic + reaper top, bot, top and you are practically invulnerable. If you are running Rise! on top of that, the nerf from 50% to 33% or however much it was won’t make a huge difference, as people and mobs are gonna have a hell of a tough time taking you down anyway.

I did in fact forget about the health and toughness reductions, so it’s fair to call it a nerf, but to be fair it’s also not a healthy type of skill to have in the game, hence why they nerfed the scrapper version Bulwark Gyro as well. Having free passive damage mitigation that requires no real input isn’t a rigorous or skill-intensive design. The fact that Necromancer as a class has so few defensive capabilities beyond Shroud is a major issue, so this nerf combined with the previous change to Infuse Terror hurts on the surface, but in total it just requires more active play on your part to have sufficient survivability.
You cant play active play when you have almost no defence a glorifly sponge that now is gonna melt even faster….

there are a few areas that we feel need to be balanced, specifically boon corruption and survivability. In this update we’ll be reducing the overall capability of necromancer corruption by reducing it from their base abilities.
• Infusing Terror: Reduced the active duration of this skill from 5 seconds to 4 seconds. The recharge time has been increased from 25 seconds to 30 seconds.
• Scepter: only corrupt a boon on chilled foes
• Deathly Chill: description adjusted
• Shroud depleates 10% faster
• Rise: damage reduction is now decreased to 25%
• Signet of suffering added an internal cooldown 20s
• Soul marks: life force reduced to 1%
Minor buff to skil no 1 use and still will not use
Blighter’s Boon got changed because it effectively made Reaper’s immortal. Full healing through Shroud would end up with even greater sustain than that was, since the same classes that fart boons at high frequency also are simultaneously putting out AoE heals of larger amounts than Blighter’s Boon gave.
So no, we definitely do not need full healing through Shroud. Additional sources? Sure. Let’s start with any lifesteal effect (so sigils and Vampirism runes) and the Regeneration boon?
and that trait was the proof that boon application by other clases was out of hand, an easy fix to the trait was to give it some sort of limit or cooldown

That doesn’t address the main issue with Reaper Greatsword though, which is how slow it is.
A thing we have to keep in mind about reaper greatsword’s speed (or lack thereof) is that it isn’t an ‘issue’, it’s an explicit feature of the weapon. It’s supposed to be heavy and slow, and that has drawbacks and advantages. I’m somewhat disinclined to believe that ANet will really want to strip what is supposed to be the defining feature of the weapon.
The drawbacks far outweigh the advantages though. Also consider that the only place this weapon has any real strength is in Open world pve, and it doesn’t really matter what you bring there.

an easy way to fix that is to make the point work diferent 1v1 point does not change 2v1 points start to change to the 2 person color same thing with more players, the team with more players on points get the cap slowly.
this will even kill solo bunker a point
reduce the auto attack chain and change soul eater, gs would be decent if not viable

i’d like to see the necromancer version of scrapper, minus the hammer and techy bits. what i mean is something that excels in 1v1 scenarios, and can do well in group encounters. that means blocks (shield, which i’m too cynical to believe we will get) or speed/leaps/burst (via sword)Maybe if you saw what abilities I’d suggest for the shield?
Insidious Defense – The next 3 attacks against you, heal you instead.
Tainted Shield – Block attacks for the next 3 seconds. Attacks blocked cause an explosion of poison and weakness every second if you are attacked.
Or
Defile Defences – The next attack against you is reflected back at the attacker.
Dark Pact – Block attacks against you for 3s. Your enemies are healed for all damage dealt to you while you were blocking. When the blocking ends, they take double the amount of damage they were healed for. Undogdeable/Unblockable.
Or
Malaise – Block attacks for 3s. For every attack you block, the attacker loses 10% of their endurance and you gain 5% deathshroud and 5% health. – For when they introduce more ways to directly play with people’s endurance.
Blood Pact – Convert 3 conditions into life force. If you are bleeding, convert 6.
steal life for every attack block lets say max 3-5 attacks you steal the amount of damage that would have been taken

Well nerfing condi is not so clear cut. Condi are now somewhat balanced in PvE. And in PvP, they are also in the sense that half the classes use them, half use power. Nerf condi and they may get irrelevant in high-end play.
So the problem is not “nerf” condi but “rebalance” condi. They have some flaws in their whole design which make them hard to balance. So this is nowhere near an easy thing to do.

As far as Razah, only reason he’d stay alone is if he were locked somewhere. I’d imagine he plays a similar role to Ogden, except in Elona, maybe working with the Sunspears or similar.
He is/was curious about human nature, both the good, and the bad. Depending on the humans he spent the most time with, he could just as easily become a force of “evil”.
I could also see him playing a role of support to Kormir as well, though less likely.
