Their new map will be very small like they said. They didn’t use the adjective “small” for the ls mini map, so they might be even smaller. They want to gate the content of the dlc so it is not burned in 5 hours for normal player, 2 hours for rushers. Yes, the same time as a ls season. The more they talk us about the dlc, the more it seems to be a ls season + feature pack.

the hell are you smoking? they said these will be some of the largest, most dense maps in GW2. there will be few of them, but they’ll be big. and they did use the term “small” to define every new map that came out since launch.

i don’t think it was confirmed anywhere that air combat is a thing.

it would be a bit OP though, because you can’t be ground targeted if you’re not on the ground, and you can’t be melee’d. plus, it would trivialize WvW defenses (why upgrade a wall if the enemy will just fly over it).

zerg v zerg is so boring in wvw just hammer the gate down and rush in

thus bring more options to defend like arrow cart which if hit put holes in you glide and boom you are falling down dead

just imagine zerg gliding 50% of them falling from the air

amazing fights it will bring to boring zerg v zerg fight

what part of “can’t ground target because they’re in the air” did you miss? you can’t hit them with an AC because you can’t aim the AC at them.

Just commission the charr to build some anti-air guns. Problem solved.

doesn’t change the point that adding the ability to simply jump over the wall would trivialize the whole WvW experience. it would be the equivalent of always, always having a bunch of mesmers on inner just waiting to port their zerg. all the passive defenses that are meant to hold off while people come to defend would be pointless.

it’s rather baffling to me that you can’t see the issue with it.

it’s “gated” content in the same way lv80 stuff is “gated” to new characters.

what ANet is aiming to do is allow you to progress your character more (and yes, gate things until you’re stronger) without invalidating the stuff you’ve already worked on (gear, levels, skills, etc).

the game can’t remain static forever. even GW1 had a very, very similar system, before some old vets come crying “but back in GW1!”

Want to get better at hang gliding? Then, umm, hang glide. Seriously, practice makes perfect.

or, you know, punch a mordrem. or go to ascalon, where you can’t even glide. or a bunch of other unrelated tasks.

I don’t think Ascalon will work, since Hang Gliding is definitely a Heart of Maguuma mastery. I was saying, though, that the way you should improve your masteries is by performing them. Hence, hang gliding to improve your hang gliding. I find the concept of smacking dinos to learn a language incredibly stupid.

Don’ t be too enthusiastic about druid.
If ranger right now is the worst class in gw2 ( if you don’ t agree with me look the spvp finals/ tournaments and tell me how many rangers you see there ) Druids will be the worst specialisation.
Too many times we’ ve asked for more survival skills, too many times we have asked for decent F skills ( compare our F skills with warriors or engi ones and if my pet dies i can’ t use any F skill…are we joking?^ XD )
Nothing came. Nothing will come for ranger.
Simply becouse devs don’ t play rangers.

Aye, that would make more sense.

But I suppose they want to avoid the whole: “being forced to grind a specific thing in order to level up” or something like that.

i can see their point, but the most appealing aspect of masteries, to me, is gone.

they probably gave up on it because of all the negative feedback towards the new trait system. the trait unlock system was an excellent idea that was horribly implemented. the mastery system was their chance to do it right. create tasks relevant to the mastery you want, rather than repurposing generic tasks (which they’re doing again)

The thief specialization will likely replace initiative with another profession mechanic. Even if the new weapon is a rifle, the new profession mechanic will say more about the specialization’s playstyle than the weapon will.

Initiative isn’t the class mechanic. Steal is.

I beg to differ. Initiative dramatically changes the way the thief plays compared to other professions, so I think initiative is definitely one of the thief’s mechanics. We have steal, initiaitive and stealth skills as our 3 mechanics. Each one of these could change or be swapped for something else by the new specialization.

Personally, I hope initiaitive is not touched, as it is the main reason I main a thief and it makes them unique.

initiative is too intrinsic to the thief weapons to be replaced.

steal is what ANet would refer to as the class mechanic though. you can tell because the 5th line’s main attribute is “steal cooldown”.

I could totally see it being like earth ele, but if thats so why would they even bother making a specialization that is already in game? seeing how the ele already fills that role I would be waiting for something different

earth ele is more about quakes and rocks and hard, pointy things, whereas druids would be more about vines and plants and whatnot (hell, the one druid attack we’ve seen is a bunch of vines, and rangers already have entangle and a bunch of nature spirits, not to mention healing spring).

similarly, air ele is more about lightning and storms than wind, which is a shame, because wind magic is usually my favorite type of magic. maybe the ele specialization will give them a mainhand that focuses on wind magic on air attunement, then i can wield that with a focus and be a happy camper.

the only reasonable speculation about druids is that they’ll be more nature magic centric. we can’t reasonably speculate that they’ll suddenly put healers in the game “because other games have characters called druids that are healers”.

i mean, the ranger in GW2 wields swords, axes, and greatswords. it even has a torch to set stuff on fire. it’s clearly not the same “we didn’t want to name it archer so we named it ranger” from other games, so why would its specialization fall in old tropes?

killshot is exactly that, except without stealth to make it OP.

Rifle warrior is dead and useless.

which is exactly what a sniper thief would be, because melee DPS > ranged DPS, especially single target.

what thief needs is a new playstyle, not yet another “single target burst” weapon.

Cause thief has so many ranged single target burst weapons…. o wait…

A rifle would be awesome and fitting for a thief. But a greatsword thief would also be epic, ninja style!

Again i want to mention, if the thief specialization does get rifle, they might wholly remove stealth outside of smoke field+ leap or blast finisher, and might not use initiative.

so they’d remove dagger offhand, and all traps and deceptions, on top of shadow arts as a trait line.

and then they’d remove initiative, which not only implies redesigning like, half the thief traits on every line, but every single weapon skill the thief has, around the idea of no initiative.

yeah, no, that’s not happening.

What’s wrong with you? they’d only have to remove 2 deceptions, of course runes of the trapper would work, remove part of the shadow trap, the specialization very well might not be able to use off-hand dagger.
where did you even get your line of reasoning?

the entire shadow arts line is based on stealth, including a bunch of traits that trigger stealth. meanwhile, trickery is entirely based on initiative, and a bunch of traits in every trait line involve initiative gain and loss. plus, if initiative is removed, every single thief weapon skill would have to be redesigned and rebalanced to take into account cooldowns.

if they’re going to remove utility, it’ll be by types, not “oh you can’t use this specific deception skill, but you can use this other one”. and they’re not going to redesign a skill (shadow trap) just so they can get a stealthless specialization.

you guys are way, way overstating how much a specialization will change. removing initiative alone would be as much effort as making a whole new profession. removing stealth on top of that? not happening.

I think rifle will be VERY powerful, but initiative and casting time insanely decrease the effectivity( think double damage and time kill shot). But, who knows? Could bring in more traps.

I can already see you entering WvW, ready to pwn some noobs with dem stealthy 1337 sniper skillz BAM…
you just received 25K dmg from another sniper. You ded.
Well, another try, maybe sneak out of spawn area on another exit BAM… 25K dmg from somebody you didn’t see. It’s fun ey?
Can’t you see how much fun it is to get oneshot by someone without being able to react?

Whenever I see people wanting this kitten in MMOs, they forget that they are not alone in there. If you want unfair mechanics and advantages, stay in singleplayer games.

Nice crying. Enjoyed reading it a lot, thanks. So why do you think Sniper means beeing able to one shot everybody in their spawn? It’s not like the Devs are braindamaged or that you could climb the mountains around the spawn and so on.
Also people forget LOS. Ranger sometimes already have trouble with LOS with their LB Burst and the only reason they can still be viable with it is because those are multiple shots and he can move around while fireing.
Everything assumed here is that the sniper “oneshot” skill is only one single bullet and you can’t move around while channeling. Now look at the PvP maps. Most of the maps don’t even allow a Killshot to hit properly, why do you think such a sniper skill would be too broken there?
kitten kitten people crying and beeing scared but think only half the way.

the one reason killshot warrior can’t take off is because people can see him coming. he’s out there, staring at you for over a second, and if he misses he has to fill his bar over again and try again in 10 seconds.

thief can’t be seen coming (not if they’re any good). thief doesn’t have to wait for a cooldown to try their strong skill again. thief doesn’t need to fill a special bar again if they mess up the first shot.

there’s a reason thief is subpar at range.

and as for the LoS part, see why power rangers can work on WvW roaming but not on sPvP on my post above. not that you can LoS what you can’t see.

ok, so kill shot is 5k damage right(maybe things changed)? Now add your opponents armor, so maybe 4.5k. Then add possible signets that they have, so maybe 4.1k. Multiply that by two, 8.2 k. That is not a oneshot. By the way, if you haven’t seen, I put an example of power rifle, and then changed to ultra confuse/blind/tp, when people argued to much power. And i also said that it wasn’t intended for one shot, but it has been a whip since I rolled gun warrior.

your killshots only do 5k damage? you’re not stacking enough might and fury before landing them then. i’ve hit 18k killshots before, using only FGJ.

Melee DPS > Ranged DPS is only sometimes the case when a team is incapable of doing anything to protect their squishy ranged DPS’er (ie. the team has no coordination or proper team comp).

where did you pull that “rangers are popular” statistic from? on PvE, they’re asked to run melee in groups, on PvP, they’re hardly anywhere to be seen, leaving WvW roaming (because WvW zerg play rangers are the outlier, not the main course).

they’re popular in WvW roaming because they can safely gank someone else from 1500 range, safe in the knowledge that said someone can’t LoS their attacks given the openness of WvW maps.

Zelda games don’t have loot in the mmo sense. Almost every item is necessary to progress in Zelda. There are relatively few items and they show up in predetermined locations. Loot in most mmos and rpgs in general is just converted into currency or material so you can horde or get something you actually want. It’s almost always random, unnecessary junk with very little value that rains from the sky. Just because Anet is eager to compare apples and oranges doesn’t mean we need to follow suit.

That’s not entirely the point. I played through the original again, and I paid absolutely zero attention to most drops because it was either cash I didn’t need, items I didn’t need, or the stupid clock :P Add to that how every Zelda post-Ocarina has that habit of giving you an item in each dungeon necessary to finish it or beat the boss, but after that . . . it just sits in the inventory and does little unless you’re going for 100%.

Loot is entirely pointless and can be safely ignored. Much like how I find loot in this game 99% of the time. “Hey, cool, some greens . . . sell half, salvage half.”

I had to struggle to remember the last game even non-MMO where loot didn’t reach that point halfway through.

Also, Okami blows every Zelda game out of the water. I bet the new one will still make you use menus to hotkey items every time you want to use a different one while Clover solved this back in 2007.

Okami was a wonderful game, a very pretty game, and it’s a shame the studio was closed down.

psst, you should play a link between worlds. something tells me you’d love that game if the way zelda has treated items the past 15 years annoys you :P

and clover might have closed down, but they live on as platinum!

Silly thought…

Could the pistol be fixed by rebalancing it as a pure power weapon (similar to how warrior rifle was) while thief rifle becomes more of a supporting condition weapon?

Since I think that’s ultimately the main issue with the pistol – in all other respects it feels like a power weapon (regardless of what offhand you get all it has is bleeding from skill 1 – the best you can do to turn it into a condition weapon is combining it with dagger to get more Sneak Attacks off), except that the autoattack is condition based. A two-handed weapon like a rifle could then be balanced as a condition weapon without worrying about how it might interact with offhands.

It would also make it more counterable – instead of being able to do burst damage, it would at best have burst conditions, giving the target a bit more of an ability to respond.

but see, P/D has shadow strike, which is a condi attack as well. turning the whole P/D playstyle into power (essentially screwing up anyone that currently plays it) isn’t the way to go. it would be like turning ranger shortbow into a power weapon overnight. entire chunks of the playerbase would have to obtain all their gear again just to go back to playing what they enjoyed.

the solution would have to be making unload something completely different. maybe turn P/P into a hybrid set, god knows thieves don’t have hybrid options.

A bit like how I made a rifle with condition damage for my warrior (in the name of conserving blood supplies for other uses) and then pretty much right after I had that rifle soulbound ArenaNet announced the change to a purely power-based weapon.

I’d forgotten that Torment got added to Shadow Strike, but even then, there isn’t really a condition damage offhand. Could do it either way, I guess.

(Mind you, I do think pistol does get a bit of a bad rap in general – it’s really not that kitteningle-target ranged goes.)

but the bleeding on autoattack is (was) the outlier skill on warrior rifle. similar to how ranger greatsword used to have bleeding on maul, it was a condition stuffed in a power weapon (or how like thief D/D still has death blossom as a condi attack >.> ).

with pistol mainhand, it’s trickier. there are 3 condi skills that are well used by a somewhat popular build, but switch to P/P and suddenly you have a condi auto, a hybrid stealth attack that can’t even be accessed without using utilities, a bunch of CC (including melee-range CC on a ranged set, at that), and a power skill in the middle.

i’m sorry if you covered that, but sometimes i feel you write way too much to get your point across, and i end up zoning out.

but you got a key point wrong right at the start though: magic isn’t generated any more than rain in the real world “generates” water. in fact, thinking of magic like you think of water is probably the best way to think about it. it can be consumed, and released, and it can be used for a lot of things, but you can’t “create more” of it. too little of it and you have problems, too much of it and you have serious problems.

a somewhat similar comparison would be GW1’s reputation system: you can’t earn norn rep points by doing asura related tasks, that would be silly.

Speaking of grind . . .

yeah, i don’t expect it to be like that, though we could look at its rewards (thematic armor → collections, new utility skills → combat masteries) and the way each reputation was exclusive to doing X or Y things. and the sunspear rep wasn’t bad :P

personally, if we must get a rifle, i’d like to see it be more of an AoE projectile weapon. i thought this concept would apply better to crossbows, but since we aren’t getting that, then we could get it on a rifle.

the idea being that you don’t ground target the AoEs, but they happen at the spot the projectile hits something (think engineer pistol 1). that would give thief much needed ranged AoE, the one thing that isn’t in the profession’s repertoire as of now (don’t pretend cluster bomb is used as a ranged skill). from there, they could do whatever they wanted, for all i care, except another zerk burst weapon.

ANet did say it was a “new NPC race”, so while it could be an undiscovered tribe of hylek/heket or Tengu, I’m also leaving the possibility open that it’s a completely new species. For all we know, the Itzel could be that adorably bumbling mushroom guys we saw, or maybe the glowy beings we all assumed were Mursaat are actually the Itzel.

OR they could be the frog people that looks nothing like the hylek (or anything we’ve seen before in GW) and appears on the trailer when “new civilizations” pops up

@Shiren: It’s likely that Masteries will be earned in a similar fashion to traits now. They are unlocked via a combination of completing story content, achievements, doing specific events, or maybe even via completing certain Collections.

his point, which i agree with if my posts weren’t telling enough, is that even if you need to do specific things to earn mastery points, if you can spend said points on whatever you want, rather than being rewarded a point in a specific mastery for doing a specific task, then there really isn’t much point to it, is there. you’re not “mastering” a language, you’re doing unrelated tasks that will earn you points to spend on “unlock tyria translate”, or hang gliding, or combat skills.

for the masteries to be meaningful, they have to be tied to relevant content: get hang gliding points for doing hang gliding-related stuff.

a somewhat similar comparison would be GW1’s reputation system: you can’t earn norn rep points by doing asura related tasks, that would be silly.

Seems like IGN jumped the gun. didn’t find any other of the major sites doing a article yet.

I think they said it was an exclusive.

honestly, IGN could’ve broken the embargo and pretended it was an “exclusive peek”. not that we can tell either way, but i don’t recall ANet being one for exclusives.
