those leaks are years old. most skills and mechanics probably changed a lot since then.

proof? engi shield 4 was announced as a skill that absorbs projectiles that can be fired back later. that wasn’t a 2 year old leak, that was an official announcement (with videos) less than a year before public betas started.

Where did they say you would fight anything in the air? Please, link it. I have gone over everything they’ve announced regarding HoT (save yesterday’s Ready Up) and not once have I heard we will fight anything in the air.

what he said. please provide a source. ‘cause i think you’re misreading the statement i’m quoting (taking advantage of gliders during special boss encounters) as “there will be air combat”.

“use the air to your advantage in combat against certain foes”

You can find this quote under the heading “What Can I Get From Masteries?” in this article: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/reimagining-progression-the-mastery-system/
Before you go there, yes this is somewhat cryptic and might not mean much more than gliding around and taking their attention off of ground units, but we don’t know because we haven’t been given details yet. You can’t say there is no deep aerial combat involved with the new gliding system in the exact same way I can’t say there is, but something is there or that comment would not have been made.

“use the air to your advantage in combat” doesn’t mean “fight in the air”. i provided a very obvious example (one that ANet themselves gave) of leaping from one platform to the next during a boss fight.

and there’s far more evidence against air combat than in support of it. “you can’t prove it isn’t there” is really the only argument in favor of air combat.

the fact that the glider footage we have seen doesn’t change the skill bar points that you won’t get special airborn skills, not even further down the mastery line (compare it to going underwater without any weapons equipped, where your skill bar changes to an empty bar). and you can’t use your regular skills either (just jump off a high place and try triggering any skill and see if it works).

Am I right in thinking that specializations will get access to 1 previously locked weapon +some other not locked weapons?
Meaning new skills for other weapon they have access to? I mean if a druid really is going to be different from a ranger than I would expect all its weapon skill to be different as well…That is a a lot of new skills for each profession.

you’re right in your first assumption, but wrong in assuming the current weapon options will get whole new skills.

I know people are tired of fire themed skins, but I’d like a two handed weapon with a solar aesthetic. No traditional fire or the like, but with actual solar flares and prominences generated by the weapon. Something like this: http://imgur.com/gallery/44cYg

Perhaps the footfall effects could be sunspots.

don’t twilight and/or sunrise fill the “sun and pretty goo” niche already?

Elder Scrolls Online had intense phasing to ensure the world around you was always consistent with your story.

it was heavily criticized for that, with people saying “i’d rather be able to play the game with others and experience all the content than have the story dictate what i can or can’t do or who i can or can’t play with”.

At this, I can see the type of player this game will be attracting, and frankly I’m happy to leave you to your dream. :p Have fun dude.

Those smileys… their usage seem paradoxical given the tone of the writing… You know smileys are intended to convey the tone of written words (given that text offers a lot of room for interpretation) while you’re clearly insulting and belittling. I don’t mind that so much, but those smileys are working on my OCD… seriously why smileys? Do you not know how smiley’s work? Are you trying to convey a fake sense of detachment? What are you trying to say with those smileys? Why do you torment me with the smileys?!

he’s trying to be condescending and “take the moral high ground”, because apparently pointing out how silly his previous posts were is a form of degrading.

The butterfly aura doesn’t exist on anything else AFAIK. The only “magic” that can create it is the Pale Tree’s. When a weapon can only exist by being created by a single character in the universe, it wouldn’t make sense for thousands of players to be running around with one.

Yes it can.
Read what I said. A replica does NOT have the same origins as the original, it only looks the same. A replica of Caladbolg could easily have been made from any tree, painted, decorated and carved to look exactly like Caladbolg even though it is not really Caladbolg.

Caladbolg isn’t a chunk of wood. It has a white glow emanating from the center of it and an aura of butterflies flying around it at all times. It also has the essence of the Pale Tree which empowers the user. It can’t be replicated by carving a piece of bark to look similar to it.

it can, however, be replicated by carving a piece of bark to look like it, and then magic. because we have stuff like twilight, but a glowy weapon is just too much to ask, right?

no, you get druid utilities. you give up your ranger stuff for druid stuff, but if i want to be a freaking ranger, i don’t get anything new. is it that hard to follow? druid plays different, has different stuff. if i don’t want the druid stuff because i don’t want a druid, i want a ranger, thene i don’t get anything. it’s either “give up what you have for druid stuff or don’t get anything new”.

not onyl is the shared queue an insult actually, NO the stronghold map is specificly designed for it, which is even more insulting in the fact that anet said it was GvG evolded at pax. BULLKITTENs AND COWCATS!
the core element of GvG is completly scrached from stronghold.
Strognhold SHOULD have ben GvG taken from GW1 transfered into GW2 combat AND the features of the actual stronghold should have been THE REPLACEMENT for MORALBOOSTS.

The core of Real GvG is not the management of buffs given by the map, rather the skill to over come the opposite team in strategy and combat and THEN to push them back on their own.

stronghold is dumbed down to one lane each team to ESCORT NPCs
and we do know HOW MUCH GAMER SLIKE ESCORTMISSIONS DON`T WE.

actually, ANet explicitly avoided the term GvG. they went out of their way to not utter those 3 words because they knew people would flip their kitten if it wasn’t exactly like the GvG they envision (which in GW2’s case, means anything from large scale TDM to GW1 game modes). people just jumped the hype train and started calling it that.

so at least on that front, you’re at fault for hyping something they never said.

also please stop capitalizing random words. it’s pointless and makes it look like you don’t really have anything to contribute but want to be noticed.

I don’t agree. If Anet introduces a new trait and you say you also need new skills because ‘otherwise it’ll feel a bit stale for the people that don’t want to use that trait’ then that seems like a strange argument to make. More options = more options, whether you like or use them or not. It’s not like specializations are in any way a one-time choice or something that takes a lot of work to change in and out of.

except they’ve said time and again that specializations change your mechanics, and heavily implied several times that there are perks to sticking with the base class.

so if i don’t want to play a druid and i don’t get anything new for my ranger, yeah, it’ll be boring. i just want some new utilities.

Argue the finer details all you want, for me it’s as simple as this;

ArenaNet realized that underwater “endurance” was a bad idea and players didn’t like it so they removed it and we have aquabreathers. So what makes them think people are going to like this same antiquated mechanic up in the air?

It’s no different. You can’t get to places you’re not meant to get to, this is isolated to this map and any future maps they make to take advantage of flying. Updrafts and the mastery to use them could be used to gate aerial waypoints without using endurance. The current dodge mechanic could be used for aerial combat (if any) instead of endurance.

Antiquated, boring, frustrating, poor design.

you have a really poor grasp of the design of both underwater mechanics and gliding if you really think the two are even remotely comparable.

Enlighten me then oh Maestro da Vinci!

as it’s been said several times in this thread by me and by others, underwater is fundamentally different from gliding. you see, going underwater isn’t something you do purely for locomotion. when you’re underwater, you’re exploring, doing hearts and events, fighting, etc. thus, forcing a player to go back to the surface halfway through a fight would be counter-intuitive.

meanwhile, gliding is purely a way of traversing. it’s a glorified jump pad. you use gliding from going from A to B. what the endurance bar does is limit what those “B’s” are. think of it like the zephyrite aspects: you can only go as far as the amount of charges you have left allow you to, but that’s ok, because the game was designed so that those charges are always enough to get everywhere you should be. similarly, you can (or will be able to, with enough mastery points) reach anywhere you should reach with a glider. you’ll never come short of a ledge when gliding if you’re meant to reach it and execute it well.

TL;DR: underwater endurance would stop you from doing what you’re meant to do, airborn endurance only stops you from doing what you’re not meant to do.

But based on ArenaNet’s own releases we know that there is exploration with flying. There’s a reason why there are updrafts and stronger wings, so that we can find hidden areas of the map that can only be accessed this way. Sounds like exploration to me.

Also they’ve talked about these aerial beasts that will do some amount of combat with us while airborne. It’s currently unknown how extensive this combat is, but it could be a full battle just like land or water. I’ve read complaints that many of us “worriers” are making assumptions about what is in this expansion without knowing the facts, aren’t you making some assumptions here about what flying is not without all the facts?

the updrafts are no more “exploring” than spotting a JP-like structure from the ground and trying to find your way there.

and ANet has never, ever mentioned fighting in combat. in fact, while gliding, the player was locked out of her skills. there are flying creatures, and there are ways to take advantage of gliding while fighting them, in that if they overwhelm a platform, you can leap to the next, not fight it in mid air. at most, expect them to be a hazard that just knocks you out of your glider if you come too close.

you people have to stop seeing things that aren’t there, this is worse than the land spears thread.

New weapons for heart of thorns expansion

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

BrunoBRS.5178

I don’t want to kill the brainstorming….. but, there are no new weapon types being added in Heart of Thorns. Though, specializations will allow professions to use existing weapon types which they currently cannot use.

I think it’s worth clearing up the “Spears as land weapons” discussion for a few reasons. “No new weapon types” wouldn’t technically eliminate land spears on a class. Also, in the trailer at the end of S2, a Sylvari impales someone on a spear, on land. It’s gonna stink for players hoping to get land spears and they wouldn’t be wrong to get excited for them after seeing the reasons I left above. If you don’t comment, I will figure land spears will be a thing that you guys want to surprise us with. If you do comment, I will figure it’s to dispel the land spear myth, which would be a good thing. No one wants to get hyped about something that isn’t making its way into the game.

sorry, but saying “silence means you agree with me” to ANet is a recipe for disappointment.

You’re missing the point, though.

People are disappointed that gliding is so limited. We were hoping it would be a freeform movement mode, much like water or land movement is. Instead it seems like it’s basically like Zelda fast travel, where you get a limited number of paths/landing points? That’s not nearly as much fun. Compared to the full-fledged movement options we already have, it’s disappointing that ANet chose to go with a limited movement ability for the expansion.

it’s a middle ground between the two. it’s a method of traversal that is inherently limited in that you can’t just fly over everything, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get creative with it.

really, the best way for everyone to get ready for gliding is to go play zelda wind waker. get yourself a deku leaf, and see how it works. it is exactly the same as gliding in GW2 will be (actually, GW2 gliding will be easier, because updrafts will regenerate your bar), and you’ll see that it’s far from being limited, boring, or any of the horrible adjectives being thrown at the feature.

for you poor souls that never played wind waker. for the record, he has the fully upgraded magic bar (wind waker’s “flying endurance” ). the starter one is about half that size.

Two Problems I Have on the Mastery System

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: BrunoBRS.5178

BrunoBRS.5178

And you aren’t getting it with the Mordrem. You simply can’t kill them until you get the mastery unlock. It really is no different than finding a key and opening a door, getting a glider to get to a new ledge or learning a language to open a sealed passageway. What is impossible made normal, what is impassable made traversable. Leveling is a gradual increase in your abilities, not flat out unlocking new areas. You gradually get better and can eventually tackle larger problems because you have higher stats.

That’s vertical progression. Until a player gets X skill/gear/MacGuffin, they can’t do the content.

And it gets better, because we can’t get X without running specific content repeatedly. It’s exactly the same thing as needing to run through raids to get gear so you can do the next raid. Exactly the same. The reasoning behind it is even the same – to distinguish players who have run through the content from those who haven’t, and give players who run through the content bigger/more numbers.

The more I learn about this expansion, the less excited I am about it. So far it sounds like a Tyrian spin on all the things that made me uninterested in other MMOs.

boy do you have a gross misunderstanding of how things will work.

first of all, just because you can’t do something until you have something else, doesn’t mean it’s vertical progression. i wrote a post about it here, linking the idea of masteries to zelda items.

second of all, masteries can’t be earned by doing specific content repeatedly. you see, while mastery points are awarded through specific tasks, those points are only earned once, ever, per account. think of it like achievements: you get the achievement, and then no matter how many times you redo it (save exceptions that don’t exist with masteries), you can’t earn that achievement again. you unlocked it, that’s it. so to say that you’ll have to do the same thing over and over to unlock masteries is the literal opposite of the truth.

thirdly, the only “bigger number” you get is that next to your name plate, which again, is just like AP. you’re not better than other players for having accumulated more mastery points, you just spent more time going after them. masteries weren’t designed to split “great” players from “poor” players. they were meant to allow players to work towards new things while still keeping their old things relevant. so right now, you’ll have to get masteries to progress through the jungle, but you won’t need to level up again, or get new equipment. later, when more masteries are released, you’ll still need the same masteries to go through the jungle. the new masteries don’t invalidate the old ones.

^ still use that as a reference guide, though i think i’m set on sylvari (which are the hardest ones to name, i think).

If you know some Welsh, or at least Welsh names it’s easy to come up with sylvari names. They’re usually not taken either, or at least only 1 variation will be. Considering I went to uni in Aberystwyth I’d say my Welsh is appalling, but I know enough to act as a starting point and there’s plenty of websites and online translators that can help.

Although I’ve also used Gaelic languages, Latin and Quenyan, or combinations of them. For example I had a white and black sylvari called Bethe Arian, which is the old Irish word for birch, followed by the welsh word for silver. So silver birch.

i hardly know welsh accent much less the welsh language. i’m not a native speaker, nor european (well technically i am, but that’s off-topic) :P

my 3 sylvari are Eileene, Lochlaen (which is funny because there was an NPC called that), and Frannen. of the 3, Frannen is the one i’m kinda meh on, name-wise, but i couldn’t think of anything better at the time and can’t be assed to buy a name-change contract for her.

they always have only one name because sylvaris don’t tend to get second names, whereas my humans always have a surname.

Two Problems I Have on the Mastery System

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

BrunoBRS.5178

Problem 2: Mastery Track Tiers aren’t Horizontal
Levels by Any Other Name: Mastery Track Tiers

TL;DR, Masteries are vertical progression, just like the existing leveling system is. Calling it “not the typical” is disingenuous and builds hype that is bound to get disappointed. But with a few simple changes, it can shift from raw vertical to almost horizontal, with added benefits.

this was posted on reddit at some point, but got deleted before i had a chance to reply.

basically, the whole foundation of his argument is flawed due to his misunderstanding of the terms “vertical progression” and “horizontal progression”. masteries still are horizontal progression. just because it takes progressively more effort to obtain them doesn’t mean you’re suddenly getting new powers that invalidate previous efforts and challenges.

to illustrate, i’ll use zelda as an example (i hope you play zelda, or else it’ll be hard to explain :P), since it’s a very similar analogue to masteries.

in a zelda game, you have both vertical and horizontal progression. the vertical progression occurs mostly on two fronts: obtaining more health, and getting better swords/tunics (the latter mostly in 2D games, as the 3D games’ tunics usually don’t make you more resilient without a side effect). both of those make you stronger, in that previous content becomes easier. percentage-wise, you take less damage than before (both from the tunics absorbing more damage and more hearts meaning you can take more hits before you go down), and you deal more damage to enemies.

on the other hand, you have horizontal progression in the form of items. to get items, you go through progressively more difficult dungeons, and obtaining them doesn’t make you inherently stronger, but it allows you to defeat new types of enemies and reach new places. those items give you more options, more possibilities, and yeah, it lets you defeat new enemies, but not through sheer power, but through new abilities, and even if it’s progressively harder to obtain them, it doesn’t mean it’s vertical progression.

note: i do realize a link between worlds is the exception to that, with its rental system.

I agree 100%. I’d rather see aerial combat with unlimited duration flights. Graphically it can be interesting seeing multiple fire elementals at various altitudes, and being able to fly in 3D in combat, just like underwater.

The ultimate fantasy for players in a flight game is to be like Superman. Who ever heard of Superman having endurance bar?

The gliding/flying in HoT appears to be another form of “jumping puzzle” in the form of “gliding puzzle”. It can get old fast when people need to go to champion fights.

yeah, you’re playing the wrong game. this isn’t a superman simulator, and gliding isn’t meant to be a combat tool (or a flying tool for that matter).

see, the problem is that people “would rather see” things that make no sense in GW2. ANet was like “wouldn’t it be cool if we could glide around?”, and people have reacted with “i never thought of that! yeah, i’d love to glide in GW2! you know what i’d love more? if you redid the whole game from scratch to enable 3D movement and aerial combat so i can live my medieval fantasy superman dream in an MMO without playing Aion!”.

i mean, where the hell did you even come from with that idea? were you playing GW2 for the past few years, annoyed that you couldn’t just fly everywhere and punch birds in mid air? what part of GW2 even hinted at air combat being the future? even gliding came so out of the left field it caught everyone by surprise, and the only thing it’ll be used for is moving from A to B, and yet people are freaking out as if they were betrayed because they can’t divebomb dragons.

At this moment I feel it is too late for this expansion to change.

Unfortunately, this can kill another segment of the player base, who will no longer be here when aerial combat may be the future. Especially if they need to work through gliding puzzles in the HoT expansion to get there.

i also love the “hey ANet, listen to me, i’m not saying this for my own interest’s sake, i’m thinking about the best interests of the game and the company! PLAYERS WILL LEAVE IF YOU DON’T DO WHAT I SAY!” approach. it’s such a silly attempt at guilt tripping the company into siding with you. yeah, the nonexistent “bought GW2 because i like ace combat” player base will die. such a shame.

I’d like to see a couple more ice-themed ones. I have zero expectation it’ll happen, but there it is.

there’s a whole set of ice-themed weapons, do you also need ice legendaries? :P

seriously, ice is the most recurring equipment theme after fire (SO MANY FIRE STUFF)

Plants comes in significantly ahead of ice . By some count’s Asuran weapons are more common than ice also.

That said, you’re right. I’m really more interested in ice armor (of which there is none).

now that i think about it, yeah. but hey, ice also has a ton of unique skins :P

i think we can all agree though, that we need less fire, legendary or not :P

personally, i’m hoping that from the new set of legendaries, there’s something cool for my thief. i don’t like the over-the-topness of bolt, the fact incinerator hardly qualifies as a dagger (especially on the one profession without access to burn :P), or the joke weapons quip and dreamer. in fact, i’m currently working towards kudzu, a weapon i doubt my main (the thief) will ever get to wield, specializations or not, because of my ranger (and because none of the thief options appealed to me).

Flying endurance is not fun.

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

BrunoBRS.5178

Argue the finer details all you want, for me it’s as simple as this;

Antiquated, boring, frustrating, poor design.

you have a really poor grasp of the design of both underwater mechanics and gliding if you really think the two are even remotely comparable.

they said they’re showing stronghold, not specialization.

what’s more, they already said last ready up (two weeks ago, when people comlained they didn’t say anything) that they would not be covering specializations on ready ups.

Um, Rytlock would never cheat on Logan. That is an obvious lie.

what if it wasn’t his choice? caithe overpowered him, and now she’s pregnant. sylvaris lay eggs, and she’s carrying hers everywhere after the zephyrites tried to steal it from her.

as for how she’s pregnant and lays eggs at the same time, it’s complicated.

i’m surprised at the amount of hate kudzu is getting here. it’s my favorite legendary by far, and i have slowly been working on it since 2013.

i mean, yeah, you can dislike the plant theme (i personally think it’s gorgeous), butto compare it to the joke weapons is silly.

What if colored-names are associated with what lvl mastery you are at? #HYPE

that would probably get in the way of clarity. “if it’s friendly, it’s green, if it’s in your party, it’s blue, if it’s a guildie, it’s light yellow. everything else needs to die”.

I’m sort of with you there (although you missed the other-player-not-in-party-or-guild teal). I’m not against new name colours to depict some new status, like maybe a purple name is a legendary monster wandering around, but I don’t see a good way of depicting character names different colours in masteries without making it more confusing rather than less.

teal counts as green as far as i’m concerned :P

Hmm sounds like Legacy of the Foefire + League of Legends. I don’t know if it will be good or not. It doesn’t really sound like GvG but it does remind me of Fort Aspenwood/Jade Quarry.

i think it’s like FA, if FA was more symmetrical in terms of team objectives.

My mesmer

I have it and use it but I found some decisions awful.
THE ARMOR for the people coming loyaly from their previous game they put on broken dyes schemes ( if you color the shirt you also color the waistcoat, totally the countrary of the concept art )

huh? the corset and the jacket (for the lack of a better term) are on separate channels. the only thing that gets in the way of the concept art is that the boots and the outer skirt are on the same channel, but the difference is negligible.

Guild Wars Tabletop RPG lore and history

in Lore

BrunoBRS.5178

Curious, are you going to build a whole new system from scratch, or are you going to adapt an existing system like d20 or GURPS? ’cause the former would take, obviously, a lot more effort and game design knowledge (as someone who wrote my own RPG system years ago, i can tell it takes a crap ton of effort).

We are looking to create our own from scratch. Pulling various bits and ideas from other systems along the way. Yes, it’s a big project, but I believe with the right people, we can do it, and do it well.

If you have other questions about the project in general please this thread: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/community/creations/Guild-Wars-Tabletop-RPG/first#post4786054

I would just like to try to use the lore forums to recruit writers, and lore masters for this. (Plus it helps to keep it from getting moved and off topic.) Thanks!!

hmm… well, just remember that guild wars is a really, really combat-oriented game, and tabletops don’t survive on combat alone, so you’ll have to take some liberties with the systems to keep the game engaging, rather than just adapt GW1 combat to a turn based format.

True, however I feel that we can create a system that plays well with the combat, and doesn’t diminish the vast lore and history involved in the game itself. Any ideas toward that direction are welcomed.

well the setting will be the main flavor of the system, regardless of it being a new system or an adaptation (it is, after all, filling the very specific niche of “GW players that want to have tyrian adventures in a tabletop RPG” ). that’s why i thought adapting a flexible system to give it a GW flavor would be easier than starting a whole new system from scratch.
