People don’t play MMOs for “fun”, its all about the carrot at the end. After all the MMO games did come from ARPG genre which is all about the end reward. Gw2 tries to be different by saying that we should enjoy the content for what they are. Problem is the games content is not that enjoyable or immersive just like 99% of MMO on the market. Most involve doing mundane tasks over and over. The only way someone is going to enjoy doing that is to get that carrot at the end. After all, loot obssession can be another sort of fun, otherwise games like diablo 3 wouldn’t be so popular.

Not too well worded I think, but yeah, you are right.

It seems some people are mixing “the path” with “the goal”. The “fun” I get from GW2 is earning the reward, putting on my shiny new backpiece, or just seeing that another collection achievment (or any other) is done. And that makes me feel happy and satisfied.

Doing a dungeon 145 times for that (not a made up number, that’s actually how many times you have to do a dungeon for a full collcetion) is not fun. It’s the way towards fun, but the process itself is boring and mundane.

For me fun and dungeons are polar opposites, yet I do them occasianally (2-3x times a week).

It’s hard for me to believe that someone running the same path for the 35th time still finds it enjoyable.

@Pandaman:
I see where you are coming from now.

However I do not believe that masteries are only there to lock you out of content. If that was the case, then by all means it’s fine (and if that will be the case, my point is moot).

When Anet announced it they called it “meaningful”, “long-term” progression for our characters. It seems to me that people saving up ToK despite saying things like “delayed gratification” want quite the opposite. Day 1, I’m maxed, gg, y u no endgame Anet? Basically with allowing players to use them the would shoot themselves in the foot.

@rotten:
And I see that as a problem. PvP should have it’s own shiny “from PvP only” rewards, like the glorious armor set and maybe generic rewards like champ bags what you currently get. Getting everything from the same game mode with very little variety is not a good thing.

It should not have dungeoen gear, or any other “exclusive to other gamestyle” rewards. It just makes 0 sense. Of course, the explaination for it is putting in already existing stuff as rewards is way easier than making new ones. Sad really.

I mean they could add a WvW reward track which let’s you get Liquid World XP, badges, and maybe even points for your server, but I hope we all agree that that makes no sense. Well, same with PvE.

And with all that said

I find it highly unlikely Tomes will grant mastery levels/points because:
- Tomes are ridicilously easy to obtain
- Would make for an unfair start
- Having your whole audience experience and discover things roughly at the same time is better than a few people “running ahead”
- Mastery levels are progessively harder to get (dunno where I read that), so it just doesn’t make sense that Tomes get stronger and stronger
- Tomes were origanally designed for skipping leveling with alts

If they do implement it:
- Paint me poppy and call me Susie
- Tomes will grant 1 point, but you’ll need ~ 2000 points to upgrade a level (do we really want that?)
- Tomes may grant you a level at first, but then they will become less effective as XP point gain for masteries will increase

What likely is to happen:
- Tomes of Knowledge get converted to Tomes of Mentorship http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Tome_of_Mentorship
- Tomes of Knowledge grant 1 Skillpoint after lv 80 (Skillpoint problem solved)

So any displeasure you suffer from someone else maxing out a mastery through tomes is purely of your own creation and you’re asking to change their experience of the game based on this and you’re asking to change their experience of the game based on this. Doesn’t that strike you as being incredibly unreasonable? Would you support any change that affects the rewards you’ve already earned simply because someone else doesn’t like it?

- Yes, every displeasure you feel is your own creation.

- Change? What change? It’s not even in the game yet.

- It strikes me incredibly reasonable that you have to actually do the work for your reward. You don’t play Legend of Zelda and complete FFVI with it.

It’s a pretty simple system that works (or should) in-game and IRL too. I also find it fair that people start from the same base.

This newly found everybody is and should be a winner attitude makes me sick (general statement, not meant as an offesne against you presonally).

So… for all the people who think tomes will NOT work… you expect ArenaNet to just say “Hey, sPvP players — your advancement stops dead at 80”? Because tomes are how you get XP playing in sPvP.

Yes, I expect it to be exactly that. As a matter of fact would get mad if it weren’t so.

You “need” masteries in the new areas. You get mastery points by doing stuff in the new area – this much has been said. You have absolutely no use for the points in PvP.

I’m not sure why PvP-ers feel entitled to get a lot of stuff easier than everyone else with playing the same 4 maps over and over. WvW players don’t have it that good. As a side note, I also fail to understand why Dungeon collection achievments are way easier to complete via PvP than you know, actual dungeons.

(disclaimer: I do play PvP, I just hate it’s reward system)

as i said there is a difference between viable and optimal.

viable = it works
optimal = it works best

that doesnt mean im against making condition dmg a better option in pve.
but saying it is not viable is simply wrong.

The problem with that is that everything is viable in PvE. As I said some comments above, that is because of the increadibly easy PvE.

You cannot wear ‘wrong’ gear cause you can do any content in zerker, nomad and shaman with ease. Thus viable, is not really a word that’s applicable here.

ANet wants you to buy character slots.

If you have many tomes of knowledge it is very tempting to just level another character. That is what ANet wants.

They want you to feel the desire to do stuff. Those tomes won’t get any other use. They are here to convince you to buy character slots. It is as simple as that.

Dat Evil Anet!

Actually tomes were introduced after a lot of crying on the forums for faster way to level alts.

Max direct damage will likely still be the go to unless Anet radically changes current and future content to punish players who rely on proper positioning, dodging, and active defenses over passive stats and face tanking.

The problem is, none of these are really required in current PvE.

Dungeons: stack in the corner, spam 1.

Open world: spam 1.

World bosses (except Tri-wurm): Spam… wait for it… 1.

LS had some nice boss mechanics, none of them sadly reached a challanging level (on story mode – the centaur was nice in achie-mode solo).

Bubi.7942

Hey OP!

From your post I am guessing you are kinda new to this game, so some things may not be too clear yet. I would liek to clear things a bit up, so maybe it will make more sense.

Leveling : Leveling in this game is not fun. There is no variety and the xp gain is way to low. Exploration is nice and all but i personally don’t enjoy exploration. I would prefer to have some action instead of a running simulator……leveling through dungeons would be nice or through pvp. Unfortunately first dungeon is at 30 and there is no xp for pvp.

As others have mentioned, you actually do level up from PvP in forms of “Tomes of knowledge”. You just need to choose the right reward track.
Everything, and I mean everything in this game gives you exp. From exploration, through ressing, to crafting. If exploration is not your thing, you ca go crafting, dungeons, WvW (Edge of the Mists is highly recommended if you want to level fast) and PvP.

You also may not have noticed, but mobs in the open world, who have not been killed for a long time reward more than double the XP.

You also get said ’Tomes of knowledge" now by logging in, and doing some dailies, so if anything, leveling is far easier and faster than it used to be.

Rest of the leveling expierience is a unrewarding grind and running simulator: Walk to a) intertact with stuff/kill mobs. And there is never enough to complete the “heart” fast enough. You end up running arround looking for quest relevant stuff. EVERY heart is a variation of the same stuff and it gets old really fast.

I have to agree, I hate the hearts, they are the most boring thing you can do. But as said above, just avoid them if you don’t like them, lots of other ways to gain XP.

Events: Events are fine and i’m having fun while doing them with one exeption : Bosses.
The bosses are some other kind of bs. Almost every event boss has unavoidable oneshot mechanics : being chaincocooned and then blown up by the spiderqueen for example. 2 dodges don’t cut it when you’re constantly slowed. I know it is a group event but i remember that someone said this is a skillbased game. Instead of interesting cool mechanics there is oneshot bs.

Hm, I’m guessing you mean Champions and you ran into the Spider Queen in Kessex Hills? 90% of the open world champions are soloable, even group event ones, you just need a little bit more experience (and some decent gear doesn’t hurt either for doing it faster).
As for the Spider Queen, that is actually one of the few bosses you cannot solo (altough… I think you actually can with skilled play – have not tried). It’s meachincs are:
- 1 player gets cocooned if hit by it’s projectile
- Queen approaches said victim slowly and if it reaches, kills him
- Other players have to breack the cocoon before that happens

As far as I remember you cannot dodge the cocooc spit, but reflects may work. If they do work, then it’s completely soloable.

Poison/Bleed: Completely overpowered imho. Get poisoned by 2 mobs = dead.

Every class has access to multiple ways to remove conditions (via skills or traits). If you are having problems with conditions, it’s time to reconsider the skills/weapons/traits you are using.

Classes/Depth: There is not a single class i completely enjoy. There is always one or two skills that i don’t like using. Skills in general are boring. You just spam skills that come off cooldown. No rotation, no thought, no depth behind it. This feels like League of Legends when it should feel like a complex and deep roleplaying expierience.

Actually smart use of combo fields and finishers require quite a bit of thinking and precise execution. Sadly it is true, that PvE is so easy, that it doesn’t really matter there, in WvW and PvP however, if you just spam your skills, you are as good as dead.
Also, do you just spam skills in League? Uhm… that’s not ideal?

World Bosses: Zergfest….nothing more to mention here.

Sadly yes.

Feeling powerful is fun from time to time you know?

Actually you still oneshot starter area mobs on lv80 in exo gear.

Give them siege and cookies. Tell them they are awesome for what they do. I think that’s all you can do. There will always be people who fail to listen or refuse TS for whatever reason.

This.

After they say “I’m tagging off now”, say something like “Thanks for leading!” or “Thanks for tagging up!” – even if the session wasn’t that great (maybe lost a lot of fights, or was just karma training).

If you are roaming / scouting, give accurate reports on what’s happening, eg.: server, number, objective that is under attack.

And don’t blame if he doesn’t rush to save it, there might be 4 others whispering him/her about where help is needed.

To be honest, this could be inplemented pretty well.

Maybe award a Zephyrite color swatch for each Hue you “maxed” out. OR you can get one selectable uncommon dye for getting all common ones, one selectable rare one for getting all uncommon ones, and one selectable TP one for getting all rares.

Get a rainbow (color changing) dye when you have all dyes, TP ones included.

I wouldn’t call it the most rewarding thing by far.

If you compare the gem prices with gold prices… let’s see…

An avarage run for a key 20-25 mins (yes you can do super speed runs for 18 mins, but that wont happen every time), but it’s more likely a bit more with character creatin and deleting. 25 keys is 2100 gems. So that’s roughly a bit more than 10 hours “playtime”.

2100 gems currently is around 260 gold. That’s a 26 gold per hour “income”. And…

Huh… it may be the most profitable after all

Well it was elaboratly explained in the patch notes when it came out and the previous announcement before that when it was gonna end.

Don’t forget the multiple threads asking about the event’s end, which all have gotten replies, you could have checked those.

Oh wait.

What an incredibly helpful and constructive reply that was.

1) There’s nothing whatsoever in the patch notes, that I can see, about end date.
2) I have a life beyond GW2, and many better things to do with my time than reading every single thread in the forums. If it was discussed here – so what? I didn’t see it. I strongly doubt I was the only person.
3) I was making a serious point; if you can’t manage a serious answer, I really wouldn’t bother. ANet launched GW2 in China last year; Spring Festival is a big thing, and is still going. I had assumed that the content would continue; I was wrong. But why on earth kill the parallel game content for the sake of it? It’s like deciding to end Wintersday on December 23rd.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and guess that Bubi was employing sarcasm.

I now understand why people put “/sarcasm” at the end of their posts. I thought the “Oh wait” would kinda give it away, but it seems it didn’t. Ah well. I need to be more clear next time.

And I agree, changes can be new, but this is just removal, nothing new.

With an analogy, it’s like:
You are going to your favorite theme park, when a guy at the entrance says:
- Have we got exciting news for you!
- ?
- We demolished two of our roller coasters!
- Uhm…
- Not only that, but you cannot take anyomore photos on those rollercoasters!
- Ooookay..
- We also fired the staff working there!
- I gotta go now…
- Have fun!

In most patch notes, there is nothing about the previous patch, maybe some extra rare times there is a mention of something being over.

In these notes they take time and effort to make a bulletin board about what’s being removed. I mean… just, why? It’s not like after Halloween they bothered to do a list of every NPC, activity, item, vendor, etc.. that it was gonna be removed.

And the differnce being: my dissapointment.

Pushy Guild Representation - Right or Wrong?

Well my guild is 100%rep (ish) with a pretty practical reason. It’s a WvW guild and it’s pretty annoying to whisper every member: “Hey, raid is about to start, get on TS and get in gear!” every day.

I guess a guild without any goals or purpose doesn’t need it.

Pushy Guild Representation - Right or Wrong?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Bubi.7942

Bubi.7942

In my vision the higher the represent, the more of a community the guild will become (players see another talk, can join in on anything said in guild chat, etc).

Is it a cause or effect here? Because i see it otherwise – the better the community a guild is, the better its represent rate will naturally be. Because players will want to be part of that community.
Guild identity and pride, as well as social group cohesion is not something that can be enforced – if you have to enforce it, then it is a sign that you have problems you should address. And forcing representation is nthing more than trying to duct-tape those problems – a quick and crude fix that may work short-term, but is no replacement for more appropriate solution.

That would be the case if you were talking about a set group of 15 people and make them a team.

However here you can set rules, and people may apply from tens of thousands if they see they are fit into that group. So if I enforce 100% rep, only people who are okay with that will join (or at least should). So it’s a win-win.

“Hate on OP”.. I would say hate on the ppl who can’t respect guild-raids.
You know, the ones who’ll troll a guild only ‘cos they don’t wanna play with others..

Okay, but nowhere has OP said he wants to “troll” guild raids, he was asking, wouldn’t it be better if guilds tagged up when there are no commanders? That’s it. I’m guessing OP is not an experienced “guild raider” (or WvW-er) and wants to know the reasoning behind no tags. Instead he got kitten.

Somehow they can’t understand that a guildraid is not for PPT/fights, it’s for having fun as a guild, having fun with your friends..

If not for fights or PPT then what? Are you guild raiding the JPs, killing the wurm, entering enemy Bay and killing all quartermasters?

Just don’t forget, if you don’t respect the guild, the guild will not help you.
Or would you help someone who just spit on you? ^^

Our server actually manages to run guild groups with tags. And it’s kind of super useful for other guild groups (if any on the map) and the pugmander (if any) and scouts to know what the others are up to, and know that we got a reliable group running who they can call for if needed (even cross border).

Bubi.7942

What’s with the hate on OP? It is a totally legit question.

@AnniMira:
I can only speak for myself and my guild. In “serious” WvW guilds there are rules that everyone has to follow. These being following orders 100% of the time, using “the team build” – the build that they forged together, using the the team tactics, and using the team composition whatever may that be. These are all to maximize efficiency.

If you get randoms in there, you’ll end up with people dying early (and thus giving rallies), upleveles, messed up combo fields, boons going out to random players instead of those who need them. You also cannot rely on PuGs using the right skills, meaning you cannot expect a PuG to use a “warbanner” or “waterfield” if called for. If you only have your guildmates (who you’ve been running with, and trained tactics together) you know (as a commander) what you have at your disposal.

Also, for some (like me), it is more fun to wipe a blob of 30 with an organized 15, than a 30v30 blob fight.

With that said, these can be overcome with smart use of tag colors, like my server does, sadly I am not allowed to share how, cause that is confidential!

There are several methods, best one (most rewarding) being:

Go to a city Laurel vendor (or HotM), buy t6 crafting material bags, which cost 1 laurel each and contain 3 t6 mats. You’ll avarage ~1.2 g for each bag (granted you sell the mats you get).

Meaning if you are sitting on say 200 laurels, you could exchange that for 240 g at will.

Edit: forgot to calculate TP costs, so it’s more like 1 g / bag.

Let me congratulate. Mawdrey 2 is really the best thing you guys would invent.
Without it, I would NEVER pay these 200 crystals for the episode where I just replay common events in Iron Marches. Without it I would stay as far away as humanly possible from the Dry Top aka “I can kick you from the cliff and you can’t”. Without it I would NEVER suffer another line of Marjory <3<3 Kasmeer dialogues and kept miles away from the “one dumb male & 4 wonderfull females” group.

But I want that Mawdrey 2 and you got me.

But if you want me to buy the DLC, add a skip button to every dialogue and also let me skip the parts where I wait until the NPCs I’m forced to cooperate with, despite the fact I hate them with passion, are finished with their cute talk. There might be some people who actually like Majory, Kasmeer, Taimi, Rox and that male who can be pardoned for being male only because he is a son of allmighty Eir. But the rest of us need the skip button. Be fair. Let me have fun. And I will buy the DLC. If you tell me explicitly I will be allowed to skip every dialogue and cutscene in the game, no exceptions.

If I got this right, your main gripe is that you have to pay 200 gems (if you haven’t unlocked for free) for LS episode 3, which mostly contains re-used content to get started on Mawdrey 2?

Well, turns out, you can get those ingridients from the centaur in Dry Top for a few laurels. So there’s no need to do it.

Sorry about the tinfoil hat.

I have never been on a higher tier server, my home was WSR since ever (except for the first month when I started). With that said I “imagine” 3 main differences in the “meta”.

Firstly: because we generally have less people than silver or gold league, smaller guild groups are the norm. A Guild group of 15 is perfectly fine to do everything. That means that you can’t really afford people to be in the sniper/gank team however -> but since there are not many people, othe servers don’t really have them either, so there’s no one to “gank”. Generally Guards, Warriors and other melee train classes are always welcome.

The second difference being that small roaming groups make A LOT of difference. Even solo you can flip a few camps, if you are lucky maybe you can even flip a paper tower. A small group of 4-5 can cause a lot of dread in the borderlands.

The third thing is being a “family” like server (at least here, but I imagine the same for our bronze server fellows). I know the 95% of the people that I meet in WvW and who talk on map chat. It really is kinda personal (with all the up- and downsides of that).

As I said before, I play for relaxation and fun and I found nothing, whatsoever, fun about that fight.

Zen bound 2 is a great game. Altough it is quite challenging if you want to max it out, but just playing it casually feels fantastic.

I’m have no interest in getting started in yet another f2p game. I assume the game you mention here is cash shop oriented, much like Perfect World International, in which I am only semi-active. I prefer GW, GW2, FFXI, and FFXIV. Another game would have to be absolutely awesome and offer pet oriented jobs for me to even consider it.

Why do people feel the need to recommend other games when I haven’t even hinted at wanting to play anything else? GW2 feels awesome played casually, thank you.

Not free to play, nor does it have a cash shop:

Of course, if I give up on the storyline, all I have left to do in this game is map completion and some unfinished dungeons. I am a PvE player. Not interested in any kind of PvP or WvW.

If you do care about the storyline only in LS2, then you can youtube a playtrough and watch it.

Nah, I’m from TasH, and actually these are not my own videos, but one of my guildie’s (as I cba to record), and I only feature in 1 and 3 (well I feature in 2 too, in guild chat compalining about forum complaining).

Yes, first video is defending a structure with ~15 against ~ 50 with no siege. Not sure why you want that to be open field.

Second is 3vs12. Yes, if they were equally skilled, 3v3 would be hard. The video is just there to question the statement: “but unless they’re 2:1 in numbers they usually show you their backsides and running skills”.

Anyway, I don’t really want to derail too much, most of the server descriptions above I find pretty accurate.

… and Whiteside .. well, they do have a big Zerg with WvW and TASH but unless they’re 2:1 in numbers they usually show you their backsides and running skills

Uhm… what? Are we playing the same game?

Still a thing.

I might add I tested in PvP only.
