Contested Dungeons - why?

Anet should raise the time it takes for the dungeon to get contested again. 30 minutes for CoF was reasonable in the past since you could have lots of people on the dungeon’s gate, so it wasn’t difficult to gather a few people to do it.

But now there is no reason to have such a short time to have it uncontested, in some times of the day you dont find any uncontested server and the escorting event takes much longer than running p1 or p2.

The weapon damage from the ascended weapon alone gives +5% dps, then you can count the extra stats.

So basically your both greatswords have the same dps on a night dungeon. In my ascended gs i use sigil of night and i have an exotic gs with sigil of force.

So if you run more night dungeons you should use sigil of night, but if you run Arah or you do a lot of open world stuff then maybe you should keep the sigil of force.

There is a lot of bot activity going on in HotW. I posted that on the forums but it got removed. I added 16 bots to my black list, they all had around 200 ap and were using full HotW armor and weapons, and all had the same appearence.

Its very obvious that they are bots, and also they do the same actions in front of the dungeon: first they spawn on the wp, then they teleport close to the dungeon portal, then they keep doing some jumps and walk foward and backward a bit, then they enter the dungeon.

I wonder if the bots are really capable to run a full path by their own, they probably do or else they wouldn’t have the full gear with such low ap.

In this game you get xp for doing almost anything, just by running around discovering the map you get some xp. GW2 is the least grindy mmo in terms of leveling up i’ve ever played. I’m finding odd that it is taking 1h for you to lvl up a bit.

Try to do dynamics events and heart quests, or explore a little bit your race’s capital (Black Citadel if you’re a charr, Hoelbrak for norns, Divinity’s reach for humans…).

You still have time to request a refund i think if you didnt like the game.

in my case it took 2 months to get to lvl 80 but i hear people saying that get got there in a week, GW2 wasn’t very addictive for me when i started, but now that i learned how to apreciate the game it became my favorite.
It can also be the case that you are on a low populated server, so you dont see many players around, you can delete all your characters if you want a free server transfer. In NA Blackgate and Tarnished Coast are very high populated servers.

Challenging content you find only ind dungeons and fractals. Also the challenge comes from using melee weapon against the bosses, just spamming longbow all the time makes the fight easy for you but you won’t be contributing much to your team. I recommend you to use greatsword and shortbow in dungeons, and after you get pro at ranger start using sword+warhorn or sword+axe or sword+dagger, but you need to be very skilled in order to be able to fight with sword as a ranger, that rooting effect and the leaps from the auto atack can be a pain for you.

I tried to solo alphard but i ended up killed by the spinning atack because all barricades were destroyed. When i fought her everytime she did the spinning one barricade got destroyed. So looks like the fight is a dps race too.

I did that tixx airship instance hoping to get the frame for a plush griffon, in the end i only got junk, it was just a waste of time :/

They shouldn’t bring that airship back if there is no point in doing it.

Actually I just managed to solo Alphard just to prove that even after the buffs he’s still pretty easy. It was an afk fight to be honest. I have no idea why are you complaining. Pics attached.

That quest thats is showing in your pic “Navigate the labyrinth of arah” is up, which means you didnt get to Lupicus, so you cheated!

I think they did that in order to stop all the arah p2 sellers, there was really too many of then on lfg. So, since they couldn’t fix the Lupicus exploit they just buffed the Alphard fight.

I think this game is too “friendly” and encourages too much cooperation among players. You dont have to compete for loot or kill or nodes, this game lacks grief.

I think to solve that we need to add grief to the game, maybe add a new open world pvp map with tier 7 nodes like dragonite and stuff, and make then not shareable, so if you want to craft you ascended you need to compete for it. Stop with that cooperative nonsense that is the world events and stuff, we need more grief!

I dont miss the dedicated roles. In the previous mmo i played i always hated that i had to party with other people in order to lvl up, so if i played a dps i needed to find a tank to help me or a healer, in that mmo the groups were made up to 7 players and you got double xp if you had the full group, but usually most of then were just afk auto-following while 2 or 3 were really doing the hard work.

And your comment about the dungeons, every class bring different utilities to the group if played well, but the problem is that the game lacks challenging enough content that can be completed without just stacking and dpsing. But i prefer the stacking tactics that we have here than the old “stacking behind the boss while the tank is facing it” or stay hidden in the botton of the room if you were a healer.

So, to make team work more relevant in this game we need more challenging content and more competition, maybe some kind of gvg with leaderboards, where every sunday we had a competition and the best ranked guilds of each server get rewards, maybe some kind of hall of monuments rewards that can be unlocked for the week if your guild does well in gvg.

Arah is easy! Do not be afraid to do them.

You mean to tell me that after getting yelled at for not dodging as the Lupicus throws grubs at me, getting downed, and getting a virtual pat on the back for properly timing a feedback on it’s AoE attack that the dungeon bugged out because the game thought we skipped the Lupicus?

Edit: Yes, we did kill him.

Oh sorry. That teleport only happened to me when my group decided to skip Lupicus in p2, so i thought it was kind of a trolling from a dev because we skipped. It happened on the Brie fight, the party gets a buff then 3 secs later you all are teleported to that skipping place surrounded by deadeyes. I still think that there must be a dev that likes to troll random groups in p2.

Is 30/0/0/10/30 much weaker compared to 30/25/0/0/15? Because i still use the first build so i can keep a banner up all the time, and in the pugs i run the fights usually last long enough so i need to cast the banner a second time, even a third.
I still like to use the first build because of the lower banner cooldown.

I think that each boss has different kinds of agro table to follow. The slave driver from CoF p1 for example always goes after the highest dps dealer, the final boss of the new TA path always atacks downed players and people ressing.

The wiki says that wearing a shield increases your chance to agro stuff but i think thats wrong, because i played a soldier mace+shield warrior when i started playing and the dungeon mobs always ignored me, i was able to pull agro more frequently by using greatsword, and i feel that i get more agro now that i use berserker gear.

So to ensure that you will succeed in pulling that mob you need to be the only person atacking it, if other person tags that mob too it may mess up with the agro table if that person fits the mob’s agro priority.

Maybe that ettin goes after the highest toughness player that is atacking, so you as a medium armor class may have less chance to hold agro from it.

From my experience from playing with lower lvl toons in dungeons is that with some classes you can’t just make a glass cannon build and bring it to dungeons, i played with engineer ele and thief, they all were getting downed by the auto atacks from the mobs, for these classes you need to stack some vit+tough on the build.

But i didnt have that problem with my guardian, i remember doing lover’s boss fight with my lvl 35 guardian and it really felt very easy.

That lover’s fight can be very difficult sometimes, sometimes they start to spawn hurrycanes and the female starts to make a red circle around her, making it difficult to push her back, and the guy does too many ranged atacks and shatters illusions very fast, but other times it looks like they dont do much during the fight, that guy just keep ranging a player on the other side of the room and dont use any of the shatters or aoe.

I don’t really have a problem for there being a supreme end-all of how to do the best damage in the for of Berserker’s gear and melee weapons. You can still play how you want and go along and do whatever. I wouldn’t really mind if there were condition builds that could replace Berserker’s builds and do the same damage, etc, but I am not okay with PVT “tanks” rolling around on the floor doing the same damage as a proper build.

How exactly is PVT not ‘proper’? The word ‘proper’ and the word ‘optimal’ have two entirely different meanings.

Because it causes people to play badly and hinders improvement.

Except there’s nothing ‘improper’ about it, especially when considering the fact that many PVT builds are very effective in PvP scenarios and also that soldier’s gear is the optimal setup for objects and world bosses that do not take crit damage.

How you word your sentences can make a very big impact on how people perceive the message you are trying to convey.

Well, this is the dungeon forum, so people here usually talk about effectiveness in dungeons, not in pvp or in Tequalt fight and so on.

Arah is easy! Do not be afraid to do them.

its not about the dungeon being hard but with players being spoiled with 5 minutes dungeon run.

I see that most players are spoiled also because they don’t like to fail. I’ve seen lots of times when my group wiped on the spider in AC everyone just ragequitted. But i dont feel sorry for then, they just want to be carried by a good group and don’t want to try to overcome challenges.

The ones that follow the berserker meta and also the ones that like to be tanky or healer dont like to spend too much time on a dungeon path.

I keep hearing about that lfg cooldown but i’ve never had that problem, and i pug a lot and i get in lots of groups where i get kicked or the leader ragequits and so on. Maybe that cooldown only applies to a part of the playerbase?

You can buy agony infusions from the trade post now, or you can craft yours by using those +1 agony infusions you get from the chests in fotm. The +5 agony infusion is around 5g now.

Thats weird, i dont have that cooldown.

About stacking in the AC spider, it makes the fight easier and faster, if this was a traditional mmo you would have the tank in front of the boss and the dps members behind atacking the boss, since we dont have tanks its more effective to stack so you can share boons, condition removal, ress other people etc. And also when stacking in melee range the spider doesnt do the poison wells that can kill a player in 2-3 secs, but the boss does some melee atacks that stack bleeding and cause weakness, and also that web atack. Its not difficult to kill the spider in a “regular” way, but by stacking a high dps group kills it in 30 secs, while by spreading and ranging the boss it would take 5 minutes.

For arah i never pugged any path, but i started to practice solo runs in Arah p2 since i heard its the easiest one to solo, i recommend you to try that too, its easier to do it with a warrior, the most difficult things that you will face will be the trash mobs that are hard to skip and Lupicus, the rest are quite easy.

Watch some vĂ­deos showing how to speed run dungeons and get yourself some berserker gear, then you will be more prepared than most of the “experienced” players we have pugging dungeons. Also watch out for some bad habits you might have that may annoy your group, like if you are a ranger using longbow avoid doing knockbacks when the group is stacking (or even better, dont use ranged weapons when stacking!), if you are a necro try to avoid spamming fears and so on

The game is much more easier to be played on a heavy class, and a guardian is usually much more helpful to the group than the thief.

I only use my thief to run CM because there is the only dungeon where stealth makes it faster to skip, in other dungeons its faster to just skip by yourself than having to wait for the thief to use stealth, but thieves can keep spamming blindness with pistol offhand which is very useful.

I usually use warrior in dungeons where you dont need reflects, guardian when it needs reflects or in TA and thief in CM, sometimes i use my ele but she suffers the most when the group is not very organized.
I have an eng that is only more helpful in TA story. The bombs aoe is great against that boss that summon lots of spiders that explode into poison clouds.

Healing power gear is really bad for pve. When i started playing my warrior i used soldier gear with clerics trinkets, and pve looked much more difficult. Events like the Lyssa temple felt much more difficult because i couldnt kill mobs fast enough, farming mobs was more difficult too.

When i first equipped a berserker set the difference i felt was huge, those undeads that i thought were OP started to get killed pretty fast, i could even solo some of those events near Lyssa where you need to protect the npcs so they can drop the Lyssa’s shield.

When you stop using healing power you will see how weak it is, healing power is not even a main stats, its a sub-stats like boon duration etc.

People on the dungeon’s forum hate when people recommend mace for guardian. If you want to follow the meta for dungeons use dps builds, healing power scales up very poorly in this game, having 0 or 1000 healing power doesn’t make much difference, power+precision+crit damage on the other hand scale up dramatically, and they benefit from might and vulnerability stacks.

In pve killing stuff faster >>> outhealing damage

In other words, NO MACE! EVER!

I found one of those guardians and he told that he learned that on WvW, that in there staff is a very strong weapon to fight in zergs, specially the skill #2 does huge damage.

So i think that those guardians that say staff is a great primary weapon are WvW players who think pve is faceroll.

I played a little more with my ranger using sword+dagger. I can use the evades from then with the sword auto atack if i time then well, but i just can’t use the dodges, i press the dodge button like 5 times but it still does the auto atack sequence instead of the dodge.

Looks like the problem is the auto atack has 2 leaps that can’t be interrupted, i hope they fix that in december by at least removing one of the leaps (making the kick not a leap at least).

Path 1 and 3 are the ones people use to speedrun. Path 1 is easy with a thief too, that first part where you have to lead the npc to the golem parts a thief can do it solo without killing any mob.

I ran that path this week, in my group no one was experienced. The path is not hard, but you have to fight lots of elite mobs and in some parts you cant skip then. The part where my group wiped the most was before the final boss, there are like 5 mining suits that keep spawning more dredge, we had to wipe like 3 times to clear those mining suits.

The final battle with those 2 golens we managed to do on the first try because we read the wiki (we wanted to know how far we were in dungeon).

That path to become more enjoyable to run they need to remove some of the elite mobs that we are forced to fight, they do too much cc and burning and stuff.

In my opinion the path is not really that long, but we can’t just skip all the mobs like we do in other dungeons, imagine TA foward if we were forced to kill all those mobs in that road that we use to skip before the tunnel with the puppies.

When i started playing i used to run full signet on my warrior, thats because i used the skills by clicking then with the mouse, even for healing i used to equip the healing signet. Then i started to run healing banners because it was easy to click to cast the banner and you only need to do that once in every 96 secs.

Only after a few months i learned that i should rebind my keys to something easier to use while in combat, that allowed me to use the skills more efficiently.

So i think that full signet players usually are newbies to gw2 or to mmos in general.

I’m sorry but this isn’t a problem that you can prevent.

True, but you can minimize its consequences.

Instead of giving players 60 tokens at the end of the dungeon, give them between 10 and 20 tokens after killing each boss (depending on how difficult the boss is), and only if they actually participated in the boss fight (ex., if they did a minimum of 5% total damage or 5% total healing).

That way, even if a couple of jerks decide to start kicking other players on boss 4/4, those players will have around 45 tokens from the previous bosses.

And before anyone says “but then people will just do the first boss over and over”, remember that a) the first boss in most dungeons is harder than the last, and b) GW2 has a diminishing returns system, so if you kill the same boss a second time before the daily reset, you’d get less tokens.

It’s really not rocket science; most other MMOs handle this just fine.

I heard that this was the way how dungeon rewards worked on gw2 at launch. But it caused another problem where most groups weren’t finishing the path, they were just farming the first bosses, so in Arah for example you could farm tokens without having to fight Lupicus.

In that old method it was much more easier to keep killing the spider queen in ac p2 for example then reset the instance than having to finish the whole path.

About dungeon selling, you see that most of the selling spots are for arah path 2, thats because that path is incredibly easy to solo or duo, and also because now more and more people know how to skip Lupicus on that path, which is the only challenging boss in the entire path, for all other bosses there are tricks you can use to make the fight easy.

I dont think that kicking before the final boss is that common as you say, it may happen if you do or say something that makes the rest of the group mad at you, and that chance increases if there are more than one person from the same guild, but its just not worth it. Maybe the only scenario where it would be worth kicking people to sell spots would be fractals lv 48+ (worth i mean for the scammer sellers, well… you get what i mean by that).

You see, pugs hate rangers calling then useless but they think AH clerics guardians are awesome. I remember back in the day when shout heal with soldiers warriors used to be the meta, a fight against Kholer would last for almost 10 minutes if the group didn’t wipe.

Main-hand sword
I just want to clarify for good that main hand sword is currently working as intended. All movement skills cannot be interrupted by dodging and this is currently intentional. It has a very specific play style, and I would like it to remain. I understand that rangers want a one handed melee option that is more mobile, but that will have to wait, as I know there are a mix of players who also like how this weapon plays and I do not want to take away one of the more unique playstyles that we have and replace it with something that is fairly common.

Yeah, that sucks. Well, they should at least give to rangers the option to use dagger main hand, that would be awesome to use against bosses that use too much 1 shot aoe atacks.

I usually go S/W and switch between GS and LB depending on the situation. Once you become so familiar with the ranger its actually a fun class to play. Most ppl hate rangers since rangers are exceptionally hard to learn to play.I’m a believer of skill not a believer of classes, i’m so familiar with my ranger that i rarely die in PvE (and even in WvW) unless I’m being surround by 5+ Vet Mobs or Sheer amounts of AoE. Its very hard to die in PvE situations as the ranger pet heal on down function is pretty OP. Also I believe it is possible to stow the pet as long as you put it flee mode.

If i remember correctly you can’t perma-stow the pets, even if they are on peaceful mode, once you get hit by a mob the pet automatically pops up. So in the TA f/u final boss for example the pet was a problem since it can’t dodge the atacks that make more spiders spawn.

Every profession that is not warrior or guardian receives hate from some pugs. It can be annoying to have a gs camping mesmer when the group is stacking to kill mobs, a shortbow thief and so on. But rangers are more bullied because of the “bearbow” jokes.

Rangers have high hp pool making then very tanky almost like warriors with medium armor, they have one reflection skill with 25 secs cooldown, they have a healing skill that makes a water field and cures conditions on allies on each pulse (so if you are using a warhon you can blast it to get even more heals for your allies),

The problem is that the only melee weapon they have with good dps makes then rooted in place and doesnt cleave much because of that, and in this game where one of the best things from the gameplay is being able to run while shooting/casting/swinging a sword that makes it really a pain to get used to, to make things worse the sword auto atack also has a jump, which can be annoying if you are near an edge or you need to stay in one place (like those braziers in cof p1).

Without the sword auto atack issues ranger would be an awesome class to play.

You said you were pugging before going to work. Depending of the time of the day you get lots of people that don’t speak english, so maybe thats what is making your runs so difficult. I believe pugging around the server reset is the best time to find good pugs.

Its great if you are a huge norn, with all that particle effects from the weapon and that blue glows from guardian’s skills it will be almost impossible for your group to see anything if you are doing dungeons.

When you pug SE p1 dont forget to bring wall of reflection and shield of avenger, it helps a LOT on the boss fights until the 3 golens. I think SE p1 is even shorter than cof p1.
P3 is easy too, but there is one skipping part that if you don’t know where to go you can get killed by dredge or fall in some lava.

Maybe thats a new area too with that poi, maybe you are not seeing the poi in your map because you got 100% completition on Gendarran Fields before the living story.

When i search for missing areas i look on my map if there is any grey area, then i look on the map on the wiki to see if that area is supposed to be grey or if there is a region with a name there. Every single one of those 175 areas have a name.

You can have one or 2 thieves in your group with pistol offhand, they just need to spam pistol #4 to remove the stacks of defiant.

It is useful against Melandru in the temple event so you don’t get turned into a croc, but now people discovered that if you try to equip that diving goggles while in croc form you are turned back to normal.

I think that at least warriors should never use defensive builds and gear on dungeons, they are very tanky even at berserker gear. I understand if you play a squishy class like elementalist that you need some defensive gear so you dont get downed by regular mob’s auto atacks, but with warrior you are just being lazy if you want to bring a pvt/clerics one to dungeons.
