IGN about the new Borderland map

Chaba.5410

Quote from the review:
“There’s also a sprawling, beautiful new world-versus-world battleground called the Desert Borderlands that grants powerful bonuses for holding keeps, but two weeks on, there were never enough people playing it for me to truly see it in action. "

Even IGN recognizes the outdated WvW server system that leaves us with 3 empty copies of the new map (which we all agree is beautiful).

I see nothing in that IGN quote about the server system, only about lack of players. Come on. There’s a lot of problems regarding WvW right now and they need good discussion, not weird logic and distracting rhetoric.

64-bit Client Beta FAQ

Ok, I tried to change the path of the game [not anymore in program files x86], and it didn’t fixed it..

The 64bit client still start with integrated video card, can’t do anything about it, the only thing i didn’t tried is to disable the integrated card once for all on bios, but i don’t want to do it, and i will not do it since it’s only a problem with this .exe..

It’s like the gw2 64.exe isn’t recognized as a proper game, when i select it in the nvidia panel, it doesn’t even show the icon or “guild wars 2”, it shows the path, i tried redownloading it, didn’t solved anything.. my 2 cents: the beta client isn’t recognized from some nvidia cards as a game.

That’s the only thing that makes sense so far.

Which Nvidia card do you have and driver version? A quick google search of Optimus not switching to the Nvidia GPU has some matches for other games too. It seems to be a driver issue. One guy reinstalled the OEM version of the driver that came with his laptop.

See for example: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/748467/optimus-won-t-switch-on-a-gtx-765m/

Optimus is a pita My husband had Optimus headaches when trying to run Solidworks on a Lenovo laptop.

Hello Jdallen,

But I think Anet will do what they do and look at metrics.

I am guessing that 100% WvWers are a small subset of GW2 players.

The metrics are rigged because guilds cannot play 100% WvW and get their guild halls and hall upgrades. PvP guilds can’t either, by the way.

There’s a timeout of around 10 minutes. Sometimes if the login system is bugging you have to wait 10 minutes before you are able to log in again.

(I.E., the game kicks party members out of party if they’ve been offline for exactly 10 minutes.)

64 bit client uses too much memory.

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Chaba.5410

Chaba.5410

I think this ram usage is just memory/resources that don’t get deallocated on time. I am just reporting it as a problem, it’s up to Anet to decide if it’s a valid problem or in fact an expected behavior. Also, If you are going to dismiss it, at least give some reasoning that’s not a paraphrased quote of the FAQ.

Having access to more memory doesn’t automatically double memory usage (although it does double size of pointers in the program)

I guess I’ll point out why I think it’s more of a bug, than normal 64 kittenaracteristic:
-launcher takes ~300mb, I’m sorry, but this alone is a point worth investigating. I have never seen a splash screen that uses 300mb.
-I believe I already mentioned I’m not running any high settings (That means textures are not the biggest ones and processing power required isn’t very high).
-The actual game goes up to 6gb. Again, I’m not playing on ultra HD and as far as I remember few other games ever went past 4gb.
-I never once crashed on 32bit nor 64bit clients and I’ve played lots. Seeing how people cried about how they crashed when someone on another map farted I think it’s safe to assume the amount of memory I have is enough to use with my settings and PC.

My opinion is as it is, because it is not “normal” for an application to jump from 2-3 to 5-6gb on identical settings, just because it switched to 64 bit, unless it actually uses all that memory. In other words unless assets and logic of a single HoT map take up 5-6GB the memory consumption shouldn’t be that high.

Do the math: the game data file was ~20gb (lots of which is graphical data, which bypasses ram completely as far as I know) , and before expansion the game was stable at 1-2gb memory usage. Now the file is 25gb, in other words 5gb larger, which means the assets for the 4 maps (Among other things) can only take up to 5gb. Let’s say 1.25gb / map. If I was playing with part of 1 Tyria map AND a full HoT map at peak ram usage should be ~3.3gb. Even if half of the expansion was loaded loaded at the same time (which should never happen) the ram usage should peak at old RAM usage +2.5gb (4.5gb). But it never stops there.

Basically what I’m trying to say, I think 64bit new client uses the new memory reserve, but only deallocates it when it is filled.

Again, comparisons of memory usage between 32 and 64 bit applications are difficult to make. Look at it this way:

If GW2 32-bit was using 3.5gb of memory (can’t use all 4gb because some is reserved for the 32 bit Windows libraries) and swapping to disk then getting OOM crashes, it was using 100% of available memory. If GW2 64 bit is using 5-6gb of memory on a system that has more than 4gb RAM, it isn’t using 100% of available memory.

Now to get really technical, just google the subject. There’s more reasons than just the pointers. Architecture plays a big role too.

these must be the type of people anet is trying to sell wvw to now

and in a few months, they’ll probably be the only type of players left, anyway

WvW mechanics are ppt tower farm, on 3 equal maps, and eb zergfarm, people just want stuff w/o effort anyway reason they want the old maps right?

The old BL’s were mostly alone with 3 or 4 defenders so was a karma train fest for the bigger servers, is this what people call fight??

Isn’t a the WVW problem a bit more serious, than the new map, isnt the how wvw works the problem itself, it got improved but the actual mechanics didnt aconpany it evolution?? ?

Your gibberish seems to be implying that nobody ever fought on the old borderlands, which is entirely untrue

All Aeolus pointed out was normal WvW for the vast majority of players on servers without 24/7 coverage before HoT. So what is T1’s excuse?

excuse for what? we routinely had fights in tier 1 to defend our waypoints or take down enemies waypoints on the borderlands, now you get free waypoints and free upgrades, so no one cares.

plus we’re all carebear ktrain kittenters in tier 1, doncha know, so we’re in maguuma pveing still.

Excuse for having WvW population comparable to a T4 server.

Ultimately, the problem stems from lack of rewards for non-aggressive players and a lack of things to do while defending unless a major assault is performed. Without the matter of rewards resolved, nothing will actually ever change, if not get worse.

I’m trying to see how that is the case. The costs associated with defense have been halved (by removing costs for upgrades). The only cost now is siege. The cost associated with offense has remained roughly the same. It had already seemed to be that most guilds and players did not bother performing the long siege or investing much into the costs for offense. If an offensive “rush” was not successful, most players did not bother with offense.

There’s never been any built-in support for SLI. I always had to make a custom profile and play around with the settings, such as forcing the Nvidia driver to use “Force alternate frame rendering 2” or “Force alternate frame rendering 1” until it looked right.

I don’t think you can get away with just renaming the exe. You should add a new profile for the new executable manually.

Most curious thing happened, my FPS counter from nVidia Shadowplay doesn’t work in the 64 bit version.

I just checked and it’s still working on the 32 bit version :P

I wonder if this is related to something I ran into last night. MSI Afterburner would not record when I ran the 64-bit client.

Has anyone been able to record gameplay footage while running the 64 bit client?

I can confirm that I had to change the name to be able to record with Nvidia Shadowplay.

To follow-up, I got MSI Afterburner to record and it wasn’t from renaming the executable. Usually I start Afterburner after starting GW2. For the 64-bit client I have to start Afterburner beforehand.

it’s like something tell the application to ONLY start with integrated gpu, ignoring my settings, what can i do? never happened to me, only with this 64-bit client.

EDIT: i’m using windows 7 sp1 64bit

Did you manually add gw2-64.exe to the nVidia panel?

Of course, that was the first thing i tried, after that i set the nvidia card as the default one, nothing solved my issue sadly

i also tried to right click on the 64bit client and manually select to run the program with nvidia card, nothing.

this is pretty weird, the client only start with integrated card somehow

How aggravating. The only other thing I noticed is you have GW2 installed in Program Files(x86). Try copying/moving your Guild Wars 2 folder to C:\Guild Wars 2. Windows/Optimus may be doing something weird and trying to use 32 bit libraries since the executable is in the (x86) folder.

New Borderlands Affecting Server "Balance"?

Chaba.5410

I play in NA T2 and the EB queue has increased, but the new maps are deserted. Usually noone is there. Then a mapblobb appers, flips everything and moves on to another bl. Then silence till the next blob appeares. Sometimes a handfull of ppl try to get stuff back.

I could imagine, that this feels for the higher tier servers even more strange. Because in the lower tiers are “dead times” more common than in the higher tiers. We simply are not used to “dead” maps, while the lower tiers always had some “dead timezones”

And this is exactly how it was before HoT in T2 NA playing after all the NA Prime players went to sleep and before OCX logged on. The new map only increased something that was already going on.

We had this guild mission just last night. We didn’t want to bother with splitting our guild up across three maps (we split up on a single map already) just to wait for notification and were prepared just not to do it. Luckily the event started on a map we were on right before the end of our raid (about two hours of waiting). It would be nice to have some sort of notification of which map the event is going to spawn.

I went through some overheating issues with a laptop a few years ago. Temperature issues are not caused by whether a game is “taxing” on your system. An adequately cooled machine that is being asked to do more from the software is not going to cause overheating. All that happens with software like that is the software runs slow. Overheating is a hardware issue.

Thats a rights issue. 64bit code is signed, and windows has a security lock down from 64bit runtimes from being accessed via shared processes if they are located under ‘program files’ and ‘widows\system32’. So that makes sense.

But I wrote above that I have my GW2 installed in C:\GW2 directory. Must be a “run as admin” thing.

64-bit Client Beta FAQ

Chaba.5410

I already have the 32-bit client; will I have to completely download the game again?
No. The 64-bit client uses the same data as the 32-bit client. If you already have the game installed, you can follow these instructions to avoid needing to reinstall the game:

  • Download the 64-bit client.
  • Copy the downloaded program into your Guild Wars 2 game folder.
  • Update any shortcuts to the game to point to the new file instead.
This process will be automatic once we get out of beta.

I would like to remind you that 64bit versions Windows have two “Program Files” folders for a VERY specific reason.

C:\Program Files\ <—————— Programs run from here are run in 64bit
C:\Program Files (x86)\ <—— Programs run from here cause Windows to drop into 32bit

You just told everyone to run a 64bit client from the very same directory that causes Windows to work in 32bit.

Might I suggest that you set the 64bit beta client to do a fresh install to the “C:\Program Files\” folder then just have us advanced users (Desktop Support Tech right here) copy the gw2.dat to the 64bit installation.

You can avoid some bugs right there without having to hunt down the cause.

If that’s a problem, it sounds like some sort of weird Windows thing. I have GW2 located in C:\GW2 and had no issues. People can just move the directory out of C:\Program Files too. No re-install needed.

Chaba.5410

I have a hard time believing this “everyone is PvE’ing” story for the maps being empty. If everyone were PvE’ing you would expect to see all maps empty, but that’s not the case. EB is queued every night on my server (Fort Aspenwood) and the queue seems to show up earlier every night. But I haven’t seen a queue on borderlands outside of reset since the expansion dropped.

Believe what you want, but the first week after HoT release TLC (on FA) only rallied on Saturday night in WvW. The next week, we rallied only like two times so far and one of those nights was spent checking out the secret quaggan room. Why? Most in the guild are busy grinding PvE to get our guild hall built and upgraded so we can claim objectives in WvW and getting their elite specs. And we’re a guild that ran 4-5 nights a week before HoT. So yea, “everyone is PvE’ing”. On top of that, there’s no threat to FA’s position in T2 at the moment so there’s little reason to get highly competitive right now.

Additionally, that night we checked out the secret quaggan room, we responded to a defense event at garrison. The group that was attacking garrison disappeared and left the map, even though “hey look there are people to fight here” occurred. So in my experience so far it is players being disingenuous with the cry about “there is no one because of the new map”.

All players on a server have been enjoying those Power of the Mists bonuses since launch whether they played WvW or not yet there was a great outcry to do things like remove WvW maps from map completion. I would rather those bonuses get removed completely because players who do not play in WvW have been benefiting off them without having to put their own time into WvW. It’s been like free money.

Chaba.5410

Map caps and queues should ensure that players spread out with normal WvW.

“Should” yet not. It just doesn’t happen because players do not have good information prior to transferring or they just don’t do any good research beforehand. Player movement into and out of a server for WvW is completely non-transparent and is a primary reason for bandwagons. For example, I had a few friends who transferred early on to HoD back when that had free transfer. They had no idea that a horde would follow. They told me they never would have transferred if they knew. Likewise earlier this year, players had no idea that a large Chinese guild would suddenly appear out of nowhere on FA.

With no server caps and free transfers you and your friends could transfer off.

You and your friends can transfer off right now too since there’s servers that are not full.

Edit: lemme expand on that. I seen guilds leave because of map caps and queues long before FA went Full. The transfer was not free for them and they went to JQ even (before the population calculation change). Basically, players transfer regardless of costs. I’m not saying it is right nor it is wrong. I’m saying that I don’t see any overwhelming argument in favor of removing server caps and making transfers free in order to let players self-balance. You ignored the fact that not every player has that balance as a goal. Moreover not every player has the same goals when making transferring decisions.

I’d rather not rely on “should” for population issues. The bottom line is that there are absolutely no tools available in-game to allow players to make transfer decisions. Moreover not every player has the same goals when making transferring decisions.

What action are they supposed to take?

Free transfers and drop all servers to very high. Let the players choose and figure it out.

Free transfers prior to Jan 2013 say otherwise. RIP Eredon Terrace, former T1 server!

He’s not wrong though, enemies are relentless in HoT areas any non tanky builds get downed pretty fast while running away from enemies. Then again that’s a good reason to get a non zerker build and get some defensive skills for once.

No one said he was wrong about the enemies. The suggested corrective action is to adapt the playstyle and build if he’s having trouble. That’s part of the game, figuring out how to win.

Dear god please consult your WvW players, you have managed to butcher WvW in one foul swoop. It’s not even that I personally hate the new maps, there’s just no one on them in T4 which makes me assume that they really are just that bad.

Same in T2. You can go for hours without seeing anyone else on the borderlands.

After last night in T2, I’m pretty tired of hearing this. My guild of about 15-20 responded to a defense event at our garrison. We were just finishing up checking out the new secret quaggan room so were all sorts of unorganized, but we showed up. We got wiped then came back for more. We were trying to get organized and wait for everyone to regroup. What did the other group do? They left! We were bewildered.

Please stop telling me there’s no one because of the map.

Try adjusting your build and adding in some toughness and other stats/skills that increase effective HP.

This new PvE environment works a bit like WvW IMHO. Players in WvW had to adapt to “damage that is everywhere” through their builds and playstyle. It is good IMHO for some of that to come to the PvE environment. Makes it more interesting. You have to bring along some CC and condition damage even.

What more PvE? I see this complaint thrown around so much….{snip}

Look an honest examination of the new borderlands reveals a sort of obsessive fixation with Z-axis tech that Anet brought out with the HoT maguma maps. It’s fantastic in the PvE maps, and gliding is genius, but it’s simply out of hand in the new borderlands map. That, and clearly aesthetics trumped all other design considerations. It’s in the guild halls too, massive areas, but the Arena, the really functional part of guild halls is too small by at least 25%, but a 100% increase is really what’s needed. There is no focus on the core gameplay of WvW, the new maps are at least 50% gimmick (and I think I am being generous here)
Play devil’s advocate and support Anet all you want, that’s fine, but EotM, and now this new borderlands clearly show Anet’s tin ear to what the WvW community need and their lack of understanding how WvW works for serious guilds. I have no doubt that they will continue to “tell” us how WvW should be played, regardless of the obvious fact that NONE of the devs are serious WvW players and none of them are willing to admit that they don’t understand the game mode very well.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to defend Anet here, especially with their history of WvW development (and I agree about the tin ear). If anything I’m just trying to encourage more substantive, high-quality critiques of the new map. Because honestly, every time someone just says the new maps have “too much PvE”, a kitten dies, and that’s just abusive.

“Too much z-axis” is moving in a better direction, that’s a complaint that is actually phrased in a way that makes sense. I honestly think this doesn’t disrupt travel times as much as people think; there’s quite a few elevators and lesser-known pathways in the new map that make up for the increased z-axis. Though I definitely understand this complaint for those who are looking for a more straightforward WvW map.

“50% gimmick” unfortunately is still just as vague as “too much PvE”, I still have no idea what you’re actually complaining about there. The oasis event? The air turrets? (which, btw, I will actually complain about those; there needs to be some kind of visual warning before they go off, like they light up or something right before they fire).

Thank you!

“Too much PvE” says nothing to me too. A keep lord is “too much PvE” under a vague definition. The new PvP map Stronghold has too much PvE. “Too much PvE” appears to be a shorthand for something the author has a difficult time expressing.

That place would be full of players all standing around waiting to take turns fighting or just spectating the fights. That’s called the OS and is only a place for a certain type of player. I enjoy it personally, but I could never do that all the time.

Zerg and guild fights like rolling mostly flat terrain to fight in. Choke points end up becoming circle kittens that limit tactical movement. Prior to HoT, most major zerg fights were right outside south Bay or between Bay/Hills and Garri. In EBG they almost all rotate near or in SM in the open areas.

A side bonus of less distance between small objectives is that roamers and small teams skirmish more.

There are no significant benefits to the existing BL map in terms of improving WvW fights.

Sure, lots of zerg and guild fights happen in rolling terrain and using terrain is a lot of fun, IMHO, and offers a different kind of experience, or at least a change up to the flat area fights of an arena. You may be overlooking a few things though: outnumbered fights and diversity of players.

Outnumbered fights almost always required clever use of terrain. In no way was tactical movement limited other than by player creativity or lack thereof. The new map has quite a diversity of terrain with plenty of open space. It is also rather good to have a lack of open space right nearby the objectives since the proximity of siege in objectives was always a source of friction for those players fighting right outside Bay, for example.

Also, this is WvW we are talking about. It’s always been a large sandbox and the best WvW IMHO has always come from having a good mix of different kids in the sandbox. What you describe seems to only cater to a subset of kids. We must consider the diversity of playstyles so that WvW remains inclusive.

In beta I was on an attacking team so I didn’t think about the map from a defending server’s perspective. Then after release I ended up leading a rally on home bl. At the moment, I see little incentive for why an attacking team would want to take a northern tower or why I, as a defender, should spend time retaking a northern tower. I don’t need the tower to go after a server’s garrison. Nor does the need to retake a northern tower seem as pressing as it once was when the northern towers could treb garrison. I can see how the Oasis event creates a need that somewhat replicates this, but that event is not controlled by players.
