Did ANet really hype it up?
Sorry I don’t go out much so maybe I missed something, but all they did was release a teaser and then slowly release more and more info regarding the patch. I don’t remember ANet specifically going out of there way to hype anything. Of course like I said, don’t get out much so meh.

I hope so,it would be nice.DirectX9 is very old (10 years!)and i think that now most people have a graphiccard with directX 11.X.

I wonder if the GW2 client is looking at our PC specs… Else neither the players or ANet themselves would have any hard figures to show what percentage of the population has what capabilities. With hard figures good decision can be made.

EDIT:

  • it has issues with AoE affecting more than 5 players.

I though they implemented a 5 target limit because everyone was getting aoe spam happy. Seem to remember no such limit at launch.

I guess some players are not happy with anything.

What should they have done? Craft one ascended item and automatically gain the rest of them free?

It is the conundrum. Some players want everything, and they want it as quickly and effortlessly as possible, not really knowing that the effort is what gives those items any value really.

Game without any kind of limitation will be boring as hell.

Exactly.

CureForLiving.5360

Would be nice to if it was player housing (proper player housing), but doubtful. Player housing has always been one of those nice to have things but I never really got the feeling that it would be worth the amount of effort requires to properly implement it. Or at the very least I haven\t seen any arguments good enough to support the time and effort it will require. Remember if ANet works on player housing that means something else is not being worked on.

Now I might be wrong, and I’d be perfectly fine with that, but just feeling it.

I am curious, how much time does it take to `grow´ a character? I am only asking because it has been well over a year now.

In-game time and real world time don’t really always match. However I think it’s more a matter of how much time we’ve been exposed to the characters, which is very little. Each Living World update only really had a few minutes of character exposure in a none ‘kill-that-thing’ sort of way.

The following is a bit ramble-y but I somehow couldn’t coherently edit it. Anyway…
Telling a story in a video game is a different beast altogether.

Sometimes the game mechanics won’t allow you to do certain things, sometimes you don’t have the time to implement the art assets or do the voice work. For example we know that there’s been technical issues preventing player characters from talking. There are very real limits as to how long you can expect a player to listen to audio, or look at cinematics.
Take the Personal Story, image if it was 1 hour long, filled with voice work and cinematic, all sorts of interesting scripted events and what not. Within that hour you could probably convey a decent enough story, but can you expect the user to want to experience the story for that full hour? Some players don’t care about the story, other player want to quickly finish the Personal Story mission so they can go back to grinding mats. Thus you need to limit the amount of time you take players away from other aspects of the game.

For example. Could we have had more character development on Scarlets part? Sure. But ask yourself how would that have been implemented? Cutscenes? Well you know video games are an interactive medium, cutscenes by there nature are none interactive, meaning that we already have a conflict. In a movie it’s perfectly fine for 2 characters to stand and talk to each other for 15 minutes, depending on the genre most of the movie can just be people talking. However again, ask yourself how this would translate? Do you want to stand around listening to people talk and talk and talk? No, this is a game, you play games. In a book you can easily spend an entire page or two describing something, however that same effort becomes significantly more difficult because unlike words video game assets are more difficult to produce and manipulate.

I see a lot of complaining about things that were done wrong but not enough realisation, or thought as to how it could be practically done differently. And the key here is practically.

The idea was more that plants take in CO2 and give out breathable air – the reverse of animals. So theoretically (we don’t know if sylvari function this way!), a human and a sylvari could breath into each other without issue.

CureForLiving.5360

Yes, Living Story has its flaws, but it’s not the idea itself that’s a failure. Think about it, how real would Tyria feel if it wasn’t changing at all? If every patch was adding permanent content? We would be fighting Scarlet million times, years after her death and that would make no sense.

Tyria doesn’t feel changed at all.

Dynamic events all over the world still repeats their same action, quest and lines over and over again.

So at least the Living Word makes Tyria feel like its changing, sure in small ways like LA or Kessex Hill. Also the spore events still seem to be popping up, so that’s something new.

I’ve seen it proposed a few times (back in the days of the suggestion forum) but no official ANet response. It would however require some modification and possibly a lot of work to make the zerg-style context single player compatible, there might also be some issues in how do we handle something like the Tower of Nightmares which no longer exists.

“When you unlock a dye after the feature pack is released, all characters on your account will have unlimited access to that color.

If you already have the same dyes unlocked on multiple characters, when you log in on additional characters, you will receive one unidentified dye for each duplicate dye already unlocked on your account."

So does this mean, in order for us to make a dye account unlocked, we must buy the color and unlock it, and if we already had it unlocked on individual characters then we get an unidentified dye for each old character locked dye of that color?

So we must once again purchase a single dye of every color we want regardless of how many characters already have it unlocked?

Well english is a second language for me, but I’m pretty sure what this means is: if Char A has blue unlocked all alts will have blue unlocked, if however Alt B also has blue unlocked and you login you get a unidentified dye, while still having access to blue.

No I have no idea where you’re coming from… seriously no idea at all.

After all, the EDs are practically sentient forces of nature.

Debatable, although there’s no definite prove either way. It’s not like we get to sit down and have a Q&A session with a ED.
ED’s are described as forces of nature, but there’s also the argument to be made that they act with some intelligence (although most examples tend to be more emotional, but I’m bias :P).
I’m still on the primal-instinctive-force-of-destruction side myself. In this theory Champions and Lieutenants are where the thinking occurs while the EDs are driven by the desire to eat and spread. So in the case of Zhaitan all tactical choices made were simply the higher ranking Risen acting to fill the desires of their master.

I mean we are told the EDs view each other as enemies

False. What we were told is “they are not allied.” This doesn’t mean they’re enemies, it just means they don’t work together.

Though Captain Whiting in Sea of Sorrows does say “this is the time of the Elder Dragons” (paraphrased) so it wouldn’t be odd to consider them as friendly-but-not-allied. The closest to “they’re enemies” we get is if the minions cross each others’ paths, they fight. But given that the Elder Dragons don’t care much on what they do (see here – Jormag doesn’t care that Sons of Svanir kill his female norn icebrood), this doesn’t account to much in regards to hostility between Elder Dragons.

Though I do want to see a battle between two dragon champions.

Well presumable once they’ve overrun the entirety of Tyria, and eaten basically all the magic the only things left would be each other. So it’s highly likely that around the end of the cycle the chances of them encountering each other grows in indirect proportion to how few none ED entities are left.
Although if all magic has been eaten by the EDs and is thus contained within them, would that mean that one ED would try to eat another ED?

A shared consciousness is interesting, but it might be more of a coincidence, remember even Skritt have a (kinda) hive-mind, and I don’t see them playing an important role in the war against the EDs. Also the shared conciousness amongst ED minions doesn’t seem universal. In the case of Zhaitan, although they worked towards a common goal and were influenced by Zhaitan’s will, we do see several individuals acting fairly independently in achieving those goals.

Ya, might wanna finish reading before you make assumptions

Nonsense! Every, and I mean EVERY, release/patch ANet puts out MUST have a negative that is pushing “everyone” to the brink! And it MUST be posted to the forums with righteous anger! -_-

Now now I too get frustrated sometimes by peoples uncalled for anger, but does it really call for sarcasm? Why yes it does!

I see a few problems with this.

People have spent a lot of gold and real money getting expensive dyes (specifically the limited time ones) for multiple characters because anet always said account bound dyes was never going to happen.

And in return…we’ll be getting regular old unidentified dyes for repeats? That seems completely fair. Heavy sarcasm intended.

Well yeah that was the issue from the start. Hopefully ANet crunched the numbers and hopefully not too many people got impacted. However overall this is a nice addition I believe.

Nothing like cherry picking an article to find something to complain about!

Welcome to the official forums.

What about ppl like me who were farming all this time since head start, for the rare dyes?
Are You kidding us?
Do You even care?
It was hard for me to farm gold for 7 ABYSS Dye?

Unlikely. Think of what playing a new character would be like.

Treaherne: Welcome to Orr.. A land of undeath and suffering..
Player: Uhmm.. Treaherne.. Zhaitan’s been dead for over a year.. It’s over..
Treaherne: /sobs What am I supposed to do now..?

Technically Trahearne’s wyld hunt wasn’t to kill Zhaitan but cleans Orr. There’s some ambiguity as to how much Zhaitan actually actually corrupted it (completely or only partially) but he sure didn’t help. Now that Zhaitan is dead, the cleansing can start but probably take a while.

Anyway, I personally would prefer they open up the rest of Orr, and show these areas being cleansed, that way not impacting the Personal Story.

Personally I’d prefer that the entity be something other than a dragon. Maybe some eldritch entity of sorts, that is pulling the strings behind the scene. I’d however prefer that the dragons aren’t his servants or slaves, essentially diminishing the EDs. I’d be fine if the entity created the EDs as an uncontrollable force of destruction, like how people can create atom bombs, and unleashed them unto the world of Tyria.

Which does leave a lot of questions. Is Scarlet now an entity in the dream, or is it only a lose collection of memories, experience and knowledge? Is it possible that we might see a couple of Scarlet successors pop-up in the ranks of the Sylvari? To what extent can an individual influence an entire generation of Sylvari? Is it only a single generation or all generations to come?

The Pact justification

in Lore

Posted by: CureForLiving.5360

CureForLiving.5360

Maybe you are right. But it doesn’t excuse the Pact from not trying their best.

The Pact airship were nowhere near LA. So of course they won’t reach LA in time to save LA. This is self fulfilling prophecy. The Pact never tried, so it didn’t succeed.

The Pact airships may or may not beat the Aetherblade airships. Either way it doesn’t excuse them from not being there. The soldiers must stand and fight the enemies, to defend the civilians, no matter the odds of winning.

So… It would have been ok for the Pact to suffer major causalities, lose of prized equipment (airships), morale, and ultimately defeat, because at least they tried their best?

Hind-sight is 20/20. There would be no way for the pack to be able to accurately predict their own casualties, or enemy forces ahead of time.

Gem Store feedback

CureForLiving.5360

I’ve always felt that for a game that is so focused on RL gem sales that the gem store itself was incredibly underwhelming. The sheer lack of product gives one the impression of walking into a store in the mall that only has 10 or 12 product for sale on a whole bunch of empty shelves.

Exactly!

Why it is they are so obsessed with selling items one time for a short period of time is beyond me. It leaves new players feeling left out, and only makes current players that happened to be short on money that month mad. For what? The chance that someone will splurge and pay an extra $20 so they can get a special axe for more than one character?

My theory goes like follow: if they have the items permanently players will be able to farm gold and exchange it for gems. If they have the items temporarily, players who are not able to farm sufficient gold will have to buy gems.
Of course this is probably not a good strategy. However since ANet has been doing this ‘march sales’ thing it’s possible that they’re seeing what impact discounts have on sales, does it increase real money sales or simply gold→gem trade in. I’m guessing that if these sales shows a increase in real money sales, then ANet might decide to stop with temporary items (thus slowly increasing the amount of available items or time) and rather use discounts instead.

Best of MARCH sales event.

If you’re in EU they’re all in Desolation overflows waiting for tequatl. :P

Which reminds me, before S2 start I really need to go guesting / tequatl hunting.

But on a more interesting note. This does bring up a interesting point of conversation, specifically, more areas. GW2 is has a pretty large game world, so it’s more than reasonable that some areas would have little to no people playing there. Sure people are leveling alts or grinding higher level areas but there is a mid-level zones that tend to be rather empty. One of the things that the living word has been trying to do is get people back to those ‘emptier’ zones, which has for the most part worked. However with so many people asking for new zones, wouldn’t this simply increase the current problem? With more new zones wouldn’t the playerbase perhaps be spread even thinner, or at the very least wouldn’t that middle-ground of empty zones increase?

Or if that’s not interesting, I guess we could just continue stating the obvious, games not dead.

1) The Nightmares Within. I had a blast leading zergs up that tower every night. Great atmosphere, good challenge, nice contained instance, fun content. I’ve got guildies who didn’t get to see it; I’d love to have a dungeon of this content so I can run it with them

Probably be getting a fractal for the tower. Would be nice if we had another world dungeon that was heavily inspired by the tower, maybe some toxic alliance decides to do their own little tower now that Scarlet is gone…
