Necromancer lore?

in Lore

CureForLiving.5360

The problem is, there is also a variety of Necromancer Origins. In human lore, Grenth gave the gift of necromancy, something Dhuum hated because of ‘death undeniable’. But humans weren’t the first necromancer, though.
All in all, I wonder if there is a cohesive origin for necromancy.

Necromancy is a type of magic (or part of the spectrum of magic?). So a necromancer is just someone who can use necromancy. GW2 doesn’t exactly have a Hogwarts, so it seems magic can be inborn and self trained without too much hassle, and by that I mean we’re not dealing with a Warhammer or Dragon Age style magic system in which magic users are somehow inherently dangerous.

You seem to be mixing up the giants and jotun. They are not the same.

Also, Thrulnn doesn’t speak the truth. It was not the Six Gods who took the jotun’s magic, nor were they rivals (nor does anything ever put the gods as rivals to any giant group).

Jotun aren’t giants either – though they are big.

Giants are kinda like dragons. We never got a proper definition of either. Well I guess that’s not exactly true, I guess it’s more like a spectrum, we can all agree that https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Champion_Giant and https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Great_Giant are giants but where is the cut off height?

Oh sure I’ve played 3 games today and they’ve gone 500-110, 201-500, 133-500 none in my favor, and of the last 10 games I’ve won 3 with only 1 game lost within a 100 point gap… ok that’s complete kitten and clearly the system is broken… but I have to heartily disagree it’s always been this bad, last season wasn’t particularly better, although I guess you probably just had more lucky matches.

Clearly it must be broken because, why would someone as skilled as you lose so badly?

Oh my you know you’re dealing with the crème de la crème when the best counter points is: you suck.

Of course lets make some attempt to reasonable discussion. The point that you’re missing here is that even if I’m a kitten player, a good match making algorithm would pit me against equally kitten players no? All us bad players would be playing against each other, playing badly of course, and all you god-like players would be doing whatever you do. That way people with equal skill, be it bad or good, would be able to enjoy challenging matches. A broken system is one where you can consecutively loose over and over and keep being matched against better players.
So let’s give your point (as shallow as it is) all the merit possible: I’m a horrible player. How does that change that the match making algorithm is putting me up against better players? Over and over? How in your mind is that a sign of a good match making algorithm when every single match is a one sided affair?

Please do enlighten me, my mind is completely and utterly unable to fathom what you’re on about, so you can only expose me to paradigm shifting knowledge here.

What’s your aggregate win/lose ratio, sweetheart?

So, instead of looking at what I said, instead of attempt to engage me on content of my post or in the realm of ideas, you think that being a better / worse player makes the opinion right and wrong? You do understand that how good of a player I am is irrelevant to the point I’m making?
Ok since you’re so bloody insistent, lets say I’m the worst player ever to exist. How is that relevant at all?

My ratio is 52% sweety. Just trust me and show me your ratio, i promise you’ll understand. Don’t be defensive. Your ratio doesn’t mean you’re bad unless you have a small sample size or are a potato.

I’ll bite, overall 1315:658 (so about 50%), this season 69:21 with 7 losing streaks. So what does this have to do with all the clearly one sided and bad matches I’ve been experiencing this season?

actually its the oposite, its super hard to comeback in legacy.
that map snowballs hard, and most of the time u lose the mid fight and its game over.

Well anecdotal as is, the only come backs I’ve had have been on legacy. Those matches we’re you’re only 100-200 points behind, somehow you manage to get your way into the keep and someone you manage to get the lord down.

Can only work if the team that gave up don’t get any reward at all, otherwise people would just queue with a 5 premade and give up within 10 seconds of the start of the match to farm the points and silver.

That would be the idea behind having a time limit before being able to forfeit. Matches are 15 minutes, I think 5 minutes, or maybe 10?

The thing is, that no matter what anyone says the way getting points works means that unless you’re on Legacy of the Foefire late game comebacks are rare and far between.
Ok so you’re 5 minutes in match is 100 : 300. That means one team needs 200 points to win the other 400 hundred. Now 1 second is 1 point, 3 points in a game. Now that means that the 100 team will need to hold all 3 points to win, they’d need to hold it for just over 2 minutes, if they’re only able to hold 2 points then both team reach 500 after 3 minutes and this is ignoring the fact that you’re up against a team that in 5 minutes was able to get a 200 point lead on you.
I can’t be the only person who realizes this? The only way to allow for more late match comebacks is to have more foefire like mechanics, but that wouldn’t exactly be a good fix.

How about this, if the match is 5 minutes in and you’re 200 or 300 points behind, just give us the ability to forfeit the game. At that point it’s pretty clear you’re not going to win. Best then to end it quickly and hope for better in the next match.

Why is map closing a thing?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

CureForLiving.5360

The reason is simple, virtualisation and resource utilization.
Each map is a instance that runs on hardware, having multiple maps open with few players requires more resources and throwing them all in one map. Also it gets more players on a map, potentially playing together. Oh and possibly load balancing.

Did the game waste it’s potential? Yes. Will a more balanced pvp bring people back? Just the few that still lurk the forums, yeah, but back to 2012 levels with old school gw1 players and its potential? Never again. I’m personally confused what the pvp team does in general because they don’t do balance, that’s relegated to the “balance team” we haven’t had any new maps since skyhammer and got a failed gamemode which is still in ranked queue. The thing I’m curious about the most is since the “pvp team” isn’t in charge of balance… what have they really been doing?!

Same applyes to the balance team if there is one. Ok maybe they are incompetent in balancing while maintaining build diversity couse they lack on actual gameplay experience in pvp couse they focus on pve or wvw. This statement is hilarious itself couse pve balance is nowhere the majority of skills traits and weapons are beyond useless compared to the optimal ones. Now tell me whats the priority.

Yeah, it’s extremely confusing knowing there is a “balance team” watching over all 3 game modes when their bias has only been towards pvp (lets just split balance across 3 game modes cough cough). The only type of balance the “pvp team” try to do is removal or addition of amulets because apparently that is within their control without messing with the “balance team”, it all seems really messed up and confusing the more you start to think about it.

Well that’s sort of understandable. For the most part PvE hasn’t exactly been that all that difficult, and before Raids optimal builds wasn’t really much of a consideration. WvW is a zerg fest so builds not really that important either (well maybe roamers, but they’ll just use whatever pvp builds work), so for a long time only PvP has really needed build consideration.
Of course that’s not an excuse (I’m all for separating the numbers).

Personally I think ANet need to do more to measure individual perforce (instead of wins and loses) to be better able to match players. At the very least it would be nice to actually have a challenging match. I’d say 9/10 matches it’s pretty clear who the winner is going to be within the first few minutes. Matches have a bad habit of being extremely one sided.

Honestly I think the launch pads need a rework. Add a few more of them, make using them a mastery and allow them to be seen on the mini-map. But I guess in the mean time a map would be nice.

What I don’t get is, if I really am so kitten (and fine lets accept that) why did I start off the day with 20 pip in ruby and now end with less than 10? Why did I even get into ruby? If I’m so kitten then I shouldn’t have been able to get past amber or emerald.
My success in pvp is inconsistent. The quality of my teammates and my opponents can drastically vary and is wholly dependent on factors outside of my control. Now sure more player over weekends etc. but a good matchmaking system would either properly balance the teams or have a better mechanism for tracking performance i.e. if I’m kitten then don’t let me get to ruby to begin with and the same for others. I don’t mind waiting in a longer queue if it means being put in a match were it doesn’t feel useless. I’m honestly feeling like ANet should just add a GG-button. God knows I’ve had enough teammates go “kitten team, I’m going to afk” so it’s honestly not just me. At least then I’d not have to slog through a unwinnable match.
If it was 1 win, 1 loss, or even 2 or 3 loses followed by 2 or 3 loses that would be fine. That would be balanced. It means I’m being put up against teams of similar skill and it’s a coin toss as to who wins. But that’s not what I’m seeing. I’m seeing these 5-6 game losing streaks with maybe a win or two in the middle.

Yes losing streaks only happen due to matchmaking flaws.

Always others to blame…its kinda nice; bit like a warm blanket.

Fail safe way to make yourselve not feel kittenty about your own performance.

A good match making would have a 50/50 splits, long losing streaks with a win every now and then isn’t a good system. Being in one kitten group after the other, having people in ruby that don’t know how to play, being put into groups with afkers, or 4-5 necros / dh. That isn’t good matchmaking system.

It really doesn’t matter so much what you play, as long as you know te class well enough. It’s more a matter of how horrible the teammates the match making algorithm is putting you with.
I’ve heard of some people with 20 match winning streaks, others with 1 or 2 per division. It’s up to RNGesus so rather just accept it. You can’t change your build, learn your class, meta-battle to the max, but you can’t play for your teammates.
If you’re interested in winning best bet is to get your own team. Decent player > than horrible players with good class comp.

So is “Not Real” really what that place is called, or is it a placeholder or something?

The map is part of a datamine from S2, specifically the floor texture in Durmand Priory I believe. Anyway I don’t think the map was ever truly meant to be seen in such detail so the authenticity and reliability is questionable. Possibly some developers might simply have put placeholder names in there, or just random things they thought were interesting. As far as I know we haven’t had developer confirmation regarding the overall accuracy of the map.

In that regard might also be just mechanical and not lorewise

Yeah ANet seems to put emphasis on mechanics over story. Oh I’m sure there is a story behind everything, but when crunch time comes I think they prioritize mechanics over story i.e. instead of adding more dialog, some more pieces of text etc. they’d rather focus on polishing expanding mechanics.
I guess it somewhat makes sense, after all you play a game but it does tend to sacrifice (in my case at least) immersion. I engage with the mechanics, say pushing a lane in Dragon Stand but it really doesn’t mean anything for me beyond trying to get a reward at the end.

I don’t know if Kryta was necessarily “white washed”. There are still plenty of tan tropical looking people in DR, whom I assume are native Krytans (a typically tropical environment). There are just a lot more paler white people now because of the huge influx of Ascalonians.

I’m not particularly sure how many Ascalonians migrated to Kryta during GW1, seemingly only a small village worth which later turned into a towns worth. Unfortunately after the Foefire there wasn’t too many Ascalonians left (of course after the Searing there wasn’t too many left either).
Well it’s just a bit odd how much Kryta has changed in the subsequent 250 years, racially and culturally. Which is kinda sad since the Krytan aesthetic from GW1 was fairly interesting.

Just my little tidbit. I don’t mean to seem indignant about the above statement or anything. I’m not trying to be all “You SJW’s are ruining…whatever it is you’re ruining with being inclusive and fair!” xD

Honestly, they always had character and personality to them.

The difference between Mordremoth and the other Elder Dragons is merely that we get to see it first hand rather than through their brainwashed, hive-minded minions.

True enough but that doesn’t feel as if they were particularly trying to carry across their personalities. I prefer the idea of ‘show don’t tell’ but it did kinda feel that there wasn’t too much effort put into the showing. Or maybe I just don’t pick up on the subtle details.

Nothing kills the mystique of a villain faster than too many lines, imho.

But a mysterious villain isn’t necessarily a good one. I’d like a well fleshed out villain with personality myself. If ANet wants to go Eldritch Abomination then they need to go full on eldritch, that could work but so far we haven’t seen that.

Why does everyone assume that the elite specs need or are even relevant to the lore

I think its more just the overall desire to see more lore in general, and elite specs and professions in general have a lot of potential to provide us not only world building but also some deeper insights into our own characters.

Unfortunatly, they also stated that with the Dragonhunter the lore devs and the elite devs did not really communicate as much as they wanted, resulting in the elite devs just running with a quick idea and creating a weird name with no real meat behind it (lorewise).

Yeah, I keep getting this feeling (due to things like these) that the lore team and the gameplay teams don’t like each other or something, because there doesn’t really seem to be a lot of communication and cooperation between them.

In GW1 all (or at least most) of the Krytans were brown skinned. This was during the mantle period but I don’t see how that would have affected anything since the Mantle were just Krytans that started worshiping Mursaat.
It’s not really that big of a deal for me really, modern Kryta is suppose to fill the ‘medieval fantasy trope’ and classically that tends to be pretty white. I just left like putting some SJW jargon in there XD

The wording is from Ogden in LS2, So it’s possible he is wrong, but the word intact doesn’t mean the others were destroyed necessarily, as a hatched egg is no longer infected either.

Given the Glint’s Challenge challenge in gw1, destroyers and other dragon minions are a good bet for those who might have destroyed the other eggs, if they were destroyed.

Glint’s hideaway (as seen in S2) was also falling apart. Likely this could also have damaged some.

Yeah, the pale tree, the nightmare court and sylvari in general really need more aftermath story.

Its essential – the pale tree is dieing/ turning evil/ about to become more powerful like tequatl. If anything it is the most important unresolved issue of the story.

She might become the next Mordremoth XD
But yeah it does seems a bit odd that they didn’t mention peoples reaction to the Sylvari are Mordrem. Oh sure Mordremoth is dead, but can we at least have 1 ignorant gang of peasants wielding pitchforks and torches?

Wouldn’t surprise me, but if they had good writing they would have it where one of the two (the one you saved second) has residual effects of being imprisoned. Minor things that make people wonder things like ‘is Mordremoth truly gone or did it plant a ’seed’ in Logan/Zojja’s mind too?’ or ‘will Logan/Zojja turn against us?’

Sounds interesting, but maybe we just feel that the character of Mordremoth wasn’t uses to it’s fullest potential and we’d like to see him actually participating in some way.

I’d love it if they brought in Bangar Ruinbringer (Blood Legion Imperator) who strips Rytlock of his ranks because of becoming a traitor to use magic (out of all legions, Blood seems to have the fewest magic users, and Bangar is already called a wildcard who is only allying with humanity to avoid fighting Iron and Ash on top of the other threats to the charr).

Ah Charr politics. It’s like Game of Thrones but with more horned cats.

As the HoT brought the thing to “focus on vertical exploration” and gliding, an expansion to the Deep Sea Dragon could bring something new in terms of maritime exploration. Bring forth, back atmosphere “piracy” that involved much of the history of Lions Arch. And why not improved naval battles?

The verticality can still work underwater, you’d just be swimming up and down instead of climbing up and gliding down.
… But a there are some nice ideas around boats… the only problem is that I don’t see how it could be done in a ‘wow’ or ‘amazing’ way with the limitation of the game engines at present.

I had a cringe when I saw yesterday a Charr wearing a Balthazar Avatar armor! don’t they have their own deities? Maybe something like a Murzat Attire for cloth bearers.

So the white washing of Kryta is fine but a Charr appropriating human culture is problematic :P

How is Anet going to top Mordremoth?

Considering how Mordremoth was practically invulnerable and immortal (if not for the existence of Trahearne) and its ability to actually speak to the player and access pretty much any location within Tyria, I just don’t see how they will be able to make the remaining dragons look anywhere as threatening (both in terms of lore as well as in-game) while still making them unique. I honestly think they will not be able to top this.

Primordus is underground, he could have minions popping up anywhere!
Steve is the water dragon, and there’s water everywhere!
Primo and Kralky are kinda so so.

Why would the Risen navy still be a threat in the ocean when Zhaitan is dead? They got nobody to command them, nowhere to go back for reinforcement and they didn’t even have the coordination.

Champion Risen demonstrate a fair amount of autonomy. Granted this autonomy was limited in regards that it was autonomy in how they serve Zhaitan (so they couldn’t really go against Zhaitan but they could come up with unique tactics and plots in order to server Zhaitan).
Now if the other Risen remained then likely champions also remain and we know that champions control the run of the mill minions. So possibility A) they’re still serving the will of Zhaitan, so if Zhaitan told them to guard the ocean around Orr they’re still doing that B ) they’re now independent and have their own machinations. In theory Tequatl was becoming the next Zhaitan, possibly another Champion might be having the same idea…

Are you saying Zhaitan was that stupid, didn’t call the majority of its navy back when Orr was under attack?

There’s some debate there. We know Mordy is intelligent because we know he can talk, but that might simply be because he was the Elder Dragon of mind. With Zhaitan we never see him demonstrating much intelligence, and what could indicate intelligence (usage of tactics in battle) could be shifted onto the Champions.

If an Elder Dragon is threatening to destroy all civilization, would you really put all your effort into wiping out a limited threat that’s no longer threatening the wide people of Tyria?

No. Because that would be moronic.

Or simply rather OCD.

2.) The matches are somewhat fair (500 – 400/300 and not 500 – 100)
3.) They rework their stupid 50/50 win loss ratio….

Number 2 in my mind is the big one, it just feel like the algorithm must be off if you get 500 – 100.
Not sure about number 3 though.

Anet matchmaking has absolutely no charm.

It would be so bad if you didn’t get that occasional game where you either get steamrolled or do the steamrolling. Close games although frustrating aren’t as enraging as going up again a better team with bad team mates

Oh that’s good to hear. Any idea how long between seasons?

@Cure: Uh… yes. Soul and spirit are the same thing in everything.

You and I clearly did not go to the same Church it seems :P
I was taught something more along the lines of http://www.greatbiblestudy.com/soul_spirit.php (I’m not saying I believe, just that no spirit and soul are not the same in everything).

Sylvari Biology?

Sylvari do have internal organs. They just don’t appear recognizable to a mammal’s internal organs. They have an organ that functions like a stomach (digests food), but it isn’t a stomach; they have an organ that functions like a heart (circulates the sap), but they don’t have an actual heart. This is what Ree meant – they don’t have the organs we have. But they have organs which fulfill similar/the same roles. They’re also in different placements, iirc from what was said, so if you go stab a sylvari where the human heart is, you may end up just piercing their psuedo-stomach.

Are we sure they have a “heart”? I thought they don’t have a pulse….

Well we know other Mordrem have hearts why not Sylvari?

So do we have a chance?

Yea I imagine any future expansions might involve fighting more than 1 dragon at a time.

Primo vs Jorry! Fire and Ice!

And you really need to pay attention to how Mordremoth and Zhaitan are killed. Zhaitan was starved for weeks and then bombarded with weapons specifically made to harm him.

And we poked his eye out, destroyed his minion production, recaptured the temples to stop the spread of his corruption and magic-nuked a number of his forces.
