Please Anet, tell us it’s a joke.
Which part?
Both, F2P and raids are both horribly bad for a games community, either one is capable is bringing a game to its knees on its own. To do both at the same time….I can see a shark tank and what looks like GW2 about to jump it.
I’m not worried about raids, myself.
Remember that announcement about the changes to Fractals? How they want to lower the barrier of entry and lower the time commitment for individual Fractal runs? That makes even more sense if they’re adding raids, which will require larger groups and longer time commitments.
They’ve already confirmed there’ll be no gear tier beyond ascended in Heart of Thorns, so the gear treadmill aspect of raids in other MMOs won’t be an issue.
My guess is it’ll look a lot like the elite missions from GW1’s Factions campaign—extra-long, more difficult dungeons that require a larger-than-normal party and offer higher-than-normal rewards. Raids don’t worry me at all.
F2P is a different story. It could be botched easily, but it could also be handled well. It all remains to be seen.
Funny you should mention this.
There was a post in the Raid CDI about legendary gear in raids, and how it could also be fair to get them without raiding, but differently, and at the same time, same difficulty.
As for the F2P thing, I suspect poor wording in that you get the base game FREE with your purchase of HoT. So play the core game for “Free” now, if you buy HoT at this moment.
That’s not the case. Go to YouTube and search for “Guild Wars 2 Free to Play” and limit the search to today. IGN leaked a trailer and someone mirrored it on YouTube.
It’s full free-to-play for the base game, including WvW.

Lets not divide the conversation too much. It’d be better if we blasted the front page to get a quicker response.
Yeah well it looks better I guess if the whole front page is covering the same topic, but the problem is that you tend to end up with a lot of 2-3 comment threads saying the same thing. Fewer threads does look less impressive but at least the conversation is more focused, less repetition and the core thoughts and feelings can more easily be deduced.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Please-don-t-make-it-F2P/
Lets not divide the conversation too much.
Other games going free to play meet the same thing. Bots, bots, bots, bots, bots, trolls trolls trolls, people with no feeling for the game because it is free just flows in and ruin the games for those that played it for a long while and those will start to leave one by one because the game they were used to and loved are now full of i don’t give a kitten-players.
I don’t see how this will be different for GW2. I whish they think this through one more time, if this is truely what they are going to do. GW2 have had a really great comunity so far, i don’t want that to change.
Other games going F2P is usually an indication that they have one foot in the grave… I think that’s probably the most uncomfortable part for me.
So lets just call this a trial. I like the word trial, F2P not so much.
Please OP, change the title. The fact that it becomes F2P must be seen by all the players directly. It’s also the only way to get a fast answer from Anet.

3. BOTS, BOTS, BOTS…. lots of bots :’(
This is my #1 concern. I don’t care about the other because they are non-issues.
packed servers will be the issue. I kind of don’t believe ArenaNet will invest millions into expanding their servers in US and EU.
They did. Its called Megaservers.
Megaserver is just a technology that groups servers together. It has its limits…. I experience a skill lag (I cannot use any skills) during lots of WvW fights and meta events like Tequatl…. not always, but it happens already. What will it be like when there is like a million more players?
Yeah. The megaserver just seems to be virtualising maps across a server farm. You can still run into a performance bottleneck at the hardware level since megaserver is likely primarily software side.
For gold sellers, they should limit the f2p accounts to only whisper me if I have them in my friend list, otherwise be blocked or something.
Well it’s a difficult balance. I’d want all whispers and mailing to be blocked. But then again their is the scenario of a current player wanting to get one of their non-player friends to try the game and they’d obviously want to communicate.
Wonder if we’ll see a ‘invite a friend’ functionality.
Well we don’t know if it’s going full F2P or if they’re just introducing a free trial.
I’m personally all for a free trial.
I just bought the main game for my son 2 days ago to try out and see if he like it before paying $50 for HoT…I just wasted my money for nothing. Anet is really kittening me off by constantly keeping us in the dark. There better be some benefits the paid players get over the free.
In all fairness this is IGN we’re talking about. Still we’ve got 2 days until the official announcement. I guess you could go on a wild rant rampage. Might change ANets mind, and they can then wipe the whole business under the rug and pretend it never happened.
Well it not like we didn’t expect raids. Still foo on IGN.
The trial thing though is a surprise. Would have been even bigger of a surprise if not for IGN (double foo!).
Yesterday while doing Frozen Maw, after we killed the boss I got dc’d. Logged back in and the chest was there. Sometimes it’s not. Maybe because of the megaservers. I log back in to a different ip maybe.
Most likely because of megaserver.
What ANet should do is reserve a “space” on a server for a few minutes so that you can get back into the server you were on before. Like a anti-DC group, but which actually works.
It’s sickening to read for 1000th time “I don’t like specialization name or something, that’s why I’m not buying”. Don’t like – don’t buy, but stop spewing negativity. They won’t change everything to YOUR liking…
Isn’t the standard procedure to just shame them for being silly? Although I guess that would add to the toxicity… never mind.
TLDR: Is there any insight on what Challenging group content will be?
Be patient for 2 more days.
But that’s like 48 hours!
Ya lol. Why making this tread 2 days before they announce what Challenging group content will be. I could understand a couple of week before when we didn’t know about the 29th, but now?? Make no sense.
Well some people feel their opinions are important irregardless of surrounding context.
its going to be raids… like 99% sure…
IGN just tweeted it and deleted it within minutes lol. Messed up the reveal for anet but thats IGN for you…
Theres the deleted tweet if your interested
http://i.imgur.com/Orn2Me0.jpgUnless IGN is trolling, raids are coming.
Yeah I kinda lost faith in game journalism a long time ago… so I’m in the camp that would be suspicious if they said the sky was blue. Rather wait and see. But it seems very likely.
Well it depends how ANet goes about designing the elites. If they design concept first and then choose weapon and skills from that, then no simply none of the concepts fit well with a rifle. If ANet goes about designing the elites by deciding the weapon / skill first and then slapping a name on it, then yes.
Alas I’m not privy to the secret inner workings of ANet.
Seeing how Zinn’s lair was in Maguuma (http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Zinn's_laboratory) and we are going further into Maguuma… (not sure if we’re going into that part of Maguuma, comparison maps here http://i.imgur.com/hblHbGt.jpg) And Zinn did create MOX… well no reason Tiami couldn’t restart him. Just think he might have interesting anecdotes to share about the hero(s) from GW1.
So many possibilities. But this seems like one of those systems that was designed to be scalable but was never scaled up. Probably get a hand full in HoT (beyond the legendary collections of course). But I’m not sure if they’ll add collections for present in-game items.
F.A.O? Food and Agriculture Organisation?
Also you could preview them in the store, so you could very much see what you were buying and thus reasonably got what you paid for.
I haven’t seen such creature…
but I’ve seen a similar thing in iron marchesexcept it is an advanced form of a displaced spirit, not a rare jungle boar :p
Well it anything was going to be floating about it trees it would be a displaced spirit.
The warrior always showed feats that an ordinary human can’t do, like hulking out in rampage form or summoning banners from thin air. The general theory is that warrior has access to a simple, kind of primal form of magic. He can’t really control it, but if the adrenalin has his blood boiling he releases his anger in magical burst. The Berserker is just the continuation of this trend.
Eh. Well it comes down to what is lore and what is visual flair. We see them summoning banners from nowhere, but do they do so in lore? Or are they in lore simply carrying them around on their back. The same with hulking out, do they in lore become literally larger, or is that simply mechanics and visuals.
Just a theory : is it possible that since they have enough willpower to detach themselves from the Dream, they could just as easily resist Mordremoth? After all, they are all about free will and independence.
Also, if ever the Pale Tree were to fall to Mordremoth, they would be the last Sylvaris to stay uncorrupted.
Disconnecting from the Dream doesn’t seem to be done via force of will. It seems to be the result of meditation and practice. But I haven’t been to the soundless isle recently.
The problem is mix and matching which creates clipping issues.
On top of present clipping issues.
But if that wasn’t an issue I’d be for this suggestion.
ArenaNet Overthinking it with these Names
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: CureForLiving.5360
I am an MMO vet since Ultima Online and I have to say these have to be the worst names I have ever seen for classes. These take the cake. How hard would it have been to give the Guardian a cool name like Crusader? Or the Thief a Monk name?
Honestly I think these names are cool, to the people that came up with them.
Well I guess cool is a bit subjective.
Daredevil makes everyone think of “Evel” Knievel.
Actually some people think the Marvel comic character.
And now “Forge” for engineers? What? A forge is an object. Brutal…
What’s wrong with objectification :P
The Dragonhunter hunts the dragon. This is how anet get the name.
So when all the dragons die, Dragonhunter will just slack in one corner and play with their fingers. =)
I think ‘dragon’ will just become metaphorical then.
Don’t be too worried about it. The forum warriors aren’t representative of most of the playerbase.
In game, there is quite a lot less QQ and more enjoyment.
Yeah well a big part of the problem is the lack of things to do in-game. Personally I do my daily achievements, crafting, and a Tequatl and then log off (although I’ve taken up GW1 for HoM points… so I’m not going too far away from GW2).
Delay release of HoT in favor of a new spec
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: CureForLiving.5360
I think every guardian will agree with a delay of HoT if it’s in favor of a new specialisation for the guardian.
As someone who doesn’t main a guardian… Well I’ll just assume you’re joking.
Will we have the possibility to invest in 3 traitlines and 1 elite traitline or will we have only 3 to choose from?
Only three, also an elite trait line can only be put in the third slot so, in the future, when classes have more than one elite specialisation you’ll still only be able to equip one elite and two core ones.
It’s purposefully designed that way. The elites (as was so far explained) was not intended to be a direct upgrade and as such a must have. So the thing is you have to ask yourself: is the new weapon and mechanic worth giving up one of my other traitlines. And depending on how you want to play that might differ.
It would have been nice if there was some lore around the names, or at least some way of seeing how it fits into the world of Tyria. The first thing I think when I see ‘daredevil’ is… does Tyria have a devil? I mean yeah you got the six gods, and yes you’ve got demons, but where exactly does the devil come into it?
Other than that, a rose by any other name.
the deep sea dragon nicknamed Bubbles for now.
His name is Steve! :P
Back in the day I used to get a key drop a few times a month just from random mobs. I recently realized I’ve had three ascended drops since my last key drop. Just curious if they’re even in the loot table any more.
The answer is yes. Also I’ve had 3-4 key drops in the last 3 years!? So yeah a few times a month is… well maybe not representative of the norm?
Nothing wrong with staffs! I love staff on my warrior, but it comes nowhere near my staff engineer… Oh wait not all classes have staff yet!
Don’t worry future specialisations can fix that. Brawler for Warriors perhaps? Maybe alchemist for engineers (since they were suppose to fit both engineer and alchemist tropes but so far have been largely engineer).
I play sPvP and get so many greens that i no longer bother to sell them on TP for measly coppers they cost and just mass salvage or toilet them for lulz.
You get more money if you salvage them and then TP the mats though. Or at least from my experience.
I would say ‘yeah sure totally go for it’, but from the latest news regarding fractal updates it seems we’ll be getting newer infusions with higher stats that the current expensive +5 variety. So I’d personally wait and see, safe my mats.
I like it! Not graphically optimised for FPS but it looks good.
I guess the only issue is with some abilities that are target specific (i.e. you need to have selected a target), but for things like flame-thrower (which doesn’t strictly need to have a mob targeted) this would work.
Useless no, sub-optimal absolutely
Which in the minds to some automatically equates to useless.
Best bet is just to stay away from those players… you’ll be a lot happier.
I just considered another possibility. Maybe we can get a few different models with future elites? Imagine if future necro specializations also changed how minions looked.
It’s a less fun alternatively, but probably something ANet is more likely to implement.
I find it interesting that this was suggested a week ago and it went nowhere.
Yet this thread suddenly boomed.
weeks?…..try months, i already suggested this months ago and it was kicked out of sight within a day…..
In all fairness from time to time the forums tend to get spammed with the same topic over and over (i.e. expansion price reveal, dragonhunter name reveal etc.).
Well WoW basically got around this issue by having massive bosses (that way the particle effects barely go up to their knees). Then again WoW also has things like deadly boss mods that makes raiding a fairly mindless effort in following giant on-screen prompts (but I guess that’s kinda like telegraphs?).
But in general this isn’t such a big issue since presently in game there is very little content that you need to watch for telegraphs (not standing in the fire sure, but you’re not punished too harshly for getting hit). Hopefully with harder group content we’ll see more of a need to actually move around and actively dodge telegraphed attacks (which would obviously necessitate that the current system be looked at).
The simplest solution (although perhaps a bit too simple) would be to have a ‘who is the enemy targeting’ functionality (such as in WoW where you can see who has aggro, if memory serves) and to have a skill-showing functionality (similar to GW1 where it shows which skills the mobs are using and see them casting them allowing for interrupts or dodging or whatever).
Well it’s not that unreasonable of a request. A bit of UI flair won’t hurt anyone (also you can never have too much GLITTER AND RAINBOWS!)
please do teaser for Forge or Druid today
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Unlikely (but maybe). This weekend is Pax where they’ll be announcing difficult content. They might still reveal a specialisation but historically ANet has been all 1 week one piece of info.
Give me a ticket please! I’d be oh so grateful!
Oh wait I’m 10,200 miles (or 16,415 km) away (as the crow flies). Probably won’t be able to make it XD
Ok someone please explain this to me (and don’t spare on the technicalities I have some software development experience). Why would switching over to DX12 inherently provide a performance boost? It seems to be more like the following scenario:
No.
You can’t just “recompile” to make it DX12.
They would have to build around an entirely new engine and that is not going to happen anytime soon if ever.
In other words that it would take a lot of effort. Further why would running on a DX12 API provide performance boosts over running the same code against a DX9 API? Does DX12 have better algorithms?
What I mean is, if you’re going to draw a circle in DX9 does DX12 have a better circle drawing algorithm? From my understanding newer version of DX offers new functionality (as newer cards have newer hardware and circuits) but since at present GW2 runs everything against a DX9 API would changing all the references from DX9 to DX12 have any sort of inherent performance benefit, or would any benefit simply be a result of having to optimize the engine for DX12 (i.e. incorporating new functionality)?
You see I keep seeing people asking for this, and I’m not sure if it will necessarily have a performance benefit. In the case of world bosses it’s because your graphics card has to draw a 100+ unique models, all with their own animation and particle effects. I’m not sure if this is a short coming of the API or simply just a large workload being pushed onto the graphics card.
It will be interesting to see the reactions of new players when they realize they didn’t get what many will think they should.
People think too much. Or perhaps too little.
Well I’ll be here with a good old helping of ‘do your research next time’ when the time come. Maybe if I’m not feeling too passive-aggressive I can tell them about gold → gems, or that they can always hope into someone else’s instance.
Ha ha. No matter when it releases, I’m sure there will be posts/threads about how rushed and unfinished it is.
There will be bugs. It’s the nature of complex software development that somewhere something will be buggy, or have some emergent buggy-properties (which could not have been foreseen without large scale testing allowing for different systems to interact over numerous iterations and over a larger period of time).
So those who want to see it as rushed will (as a result of confirmation bias) still think so.
Maybe he the human form of the dragon
We’ve never seen dragons take on human forms in GW though.
Do you have a better screenshot? That one is kinda at an angle.
The skinning system in game is meant to be an income source, even with commonly available in-game skins. That’s the purpose of the transmutation charges. Sure there are multiple ways to get them for free and they are one if not the cheapest items you can buy from the Gem Shop. But they are still a Gem Shop item.
So like a lazy tax?

Honestly, it’s not really a big issues. These are nothing more than the first generation of elite specs.
First generation of elite specs is the most important one.
But you can’t expect them to get it perfect on the first time. Practice makes perfect :P
I have seen ‘meta zerk – no necro’ LFG descriptions, what are the reasons? Lack of party support/bad dps?
Eh elitism mostly. Necro isn’t horrible, but yes a thief is better in terms of overall dps. Mind you since there really isn’t hard content (maybe high level fractals, but not really that either as far as I can tell) in the game it really doesn’t matter.
However because necro does objectively output less dps people don’t want them in their groups because of their perceptions of necros. Like I said necros aren’t horrible you can take them into any content and do fairly well (not as well as other classes but you’re not going to case the group to fail).
You can try asking in https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players
Chose to farm or be left out of content. There are your two choices.
What content are you being left out of?
Aquiring a legendary was meant to be a journey, hence the lengthy process. It was meant to be a prestigious item, which it was in the beginning 2013/2014, but now one can just purchase one if you have the coin.
There isnt any other way to make it a time consuming journey, hence your feeling of grind since you want the item now. At least in the expansion new legendaries will be non tradable and you have to do quests in order to unlock them – unlike spirit shards which is a system favoring those who have played the longest/veterans.
I think the precursors will still drop though. It’s just that now you can also get them via the collections. But each collection can only be completed once.
