Can a Guardian do this?

in Guardian

Posted by: DaedalusDragon.3754

DaedalusDragon.3754

Short answer: No
Long answer: Definitely not

Warriors have more hp (better than toughness since we can’t and don’t usually have that much more than warriors do anyways), their survivability isn’t tied to utilities so they have extra slots, essentially, to do what they want with, and they have better damage and ranged weapons to boot.

But don’t worry, nothing can play like the warrior can. At least guardians aren’t too bad compared to many other classes.

Fractals are annoying

I just finished fotm 12 and I am realizing that a melee guardian has no place in fractals unless you have perfect internet with 0 latency and are incredibly ultra awesome skilled at dodging and gaining instant full endurance. Lately I’ve had to replace whatever weapon I wasn’t using as my primary one as a scepter just because enemies will 1 hit me constantly and dodging agony attacks is even harder up close.

This wouldn’t be the worst thing ever except the scepter is broken, easily dodged by enemies (even AI) and terrible overall.

What builds are letting people run up to enemies and smash their faces in without instantly dying? When I brought this up to someone in my party they shrugged it off and said that it wasn’t hard. They were a warrior and most likely had twice my health and not any less toughness. They were running full berserkers gear and doing just fine up close.

If you hate dungeons then why do you play this game? I can’t imagine somebody liking fotm but hating dungeons, nor can I imagine there being much to do outside of dungeons. Doing 5 of them a month is a joke. I laughed when I finished my monthly in the fewest days possible (given that you had to complete so many dailies to finish monthly). Making it only 5 a month shows that they were trying to do their best to make it easy enough for people who hate dungeons so much they’d rather eat their mother than partake.

If you just want to get it over with then just join in some AC exp from gw2lfg.com. My friend and I are not pros but we finish that dungeon with random pugs all of the time and we usually do all 3 runs most nights in about 1.5 – 2 hours.

In the case of this monthly, a little (minuscule) amount of work yields a great reward but if you don’t want to take part in a large part of the game then don’t complain because what else would you have them do?

Anet: “People complained about our monthly so we made it easier. Now you just have to do an emote twice.”
Player: “I HATE EMOTES WHY CAN’T I DO WHAT I WANT AND STILL GET REWARDS! THIS WILL TAKE FOREVER BECAUSE I CAN’T FIND A GROUP!”

Fractals are gated content with terrible rewards (if, like me, you have bad luck/Anet tagged you for bad loot). Did fotm 20 and got all blues and 2 greens. Couldn’t even finish the 3rd fractal though because 1 party member dropped for no reason and the bosses can 1hit kill you even without agony. This game stopped caring about player skill a long time ago and moved to a hope you get lucky game.

How does it take more than 5 minutes to get into a group? Get into a guild! If you don’t like it and want to be a loner then deal with it… seriously. There are NO cons to just joining a guild. I love my guild but I’m also in another guild JUST so I can talk to them and invite them on runs. I believe my rank in that guild is something like “Dungeoneer”.

And with gw2lfg.com, you never have to wait more than a few minutes to do any activity ever again. I spend at the most 10 minutes looking for groups for odd activities during odd hours (for me and most of America) and that is just passively people joining my party while I work on other things.

Now, to be honest. I dislike the crafting part of the daily. It is super easy… and that is kinda why. It seems lame to tack that on there so I can go and transmute a few ore into ingots.

I’m glad you like it =)

I realized some time after posting this that this isn’t an entirely novel concept (lol) and there are many guides about this build.

I’m still trying to figure out another build, one that is different than the normal that offers more damage for less survivability but without going so far as to have paper defenses. I sometimes struggle with finding the guardian’s place in a party. We can give our party a few boons but only 1 or 2 unless you go full boon push build for an extra retaliation or something. Our damage isn’t as high as warriors. And healing our party is not our specialty.

I surprise myself sometimes with just how little I understand the guardian still.

I am guessing this is botting.

thieves “supposed opness” have been on the forum for a while, actually its all over the internet.
so my guess is, the players dont understand the system yet.

otherwise they would have almost balanced it, right?
after 6 months…

Yes, because all of our classes are super well balanced by now, right?
after 6 months….

We still have classes that are nearly broken. And only a few classes even have more than 1 or 2 viable builds.

Like:
Elementalist – Auramancer is only viable build and that is scheduled for nerf too
Engineer – I don’t play one but it is obvious to see
Guardian – Pretty well balanced, but could still use more than 1-2 viable end builds
Necromancer – Pretty broken
Ranger – Bad pet AI and many class deficiencies

With guesting this is sort of a non-issue. I agree with those that say new players should get 1 server transfer withing 1-2 weeks of logging in for the first time, but in a game with persistent world server clashing pvp, you can’t have infinite (or any) free transfers.

And any argument that is based on previous iterations in the mmo industry is completely invalid. This argument is similar to “Star Trek Online has flying starships, so why doesn’t GW2 have starships?!”

Lesson to be learned: Be careful with your server selection or pick one at random and guest to your friends server. If you only really care about WvWvW then you probably did research before deciding.

AH with Greatsword - without Hammer?

in Guardian

Posted by: DaedalusDragon.3754

DaedalusDragon.3754

Daedalus: Yeah love meditations in my berserker build. And I assume you are using those meditation skills and traits in your meditation healing build.

But if you are using those in your AH build, please explain further. I am at a lost.

I’m using them on my AH build because shouts didn’t really do anything special and my meditations can easily be set up to heal if I start soloing, they remove conditions, they have more utility, and I still have 2 stun breakers. The healing you get from using the shouts is incredibly small and only matters if you use all of them at once. I have on average 8 stacks of might on everyone in my party which results in a lot of smaller heals all of the time. My survivability is amazing in group fights. In fights with lots of mobs I stay at full health with anywhere between 10 and 20 stacks of might on the entire party by spamming virtue of justice whenever an enemy dies. This also mitigates a LOT of damage as it blinds the enemies around me.

The runes of lyssa are important mostly because it gives precision and it fits into the theme of the build with a lot more boons. It really isn’t all that important and can be changed out if somebody wants more survivability.

Is anyone else having a problem with statements that are essentially saying, “Nerf AoE so melee can stand in it, I need more of a challenge.”?

I’m going to assume you are talking about havoc. Yes, I have a problem with it.

Havoc, you should really stop talking. You are making things SO much worse for yourself. If you stare at someone (no matter what class) and you don’t think about your positioning related to his skills, then you REALLY REALLY REALLY need to L2P. You sound like you want to just ignore all AoE casters because someone beat you up. If you don’t want to let their AoEs decide where you stand then use that brain of yours and think of a strategy, or you can wait until all of the deadly ones (not really any of those anyways) are on cooldown and use your thief (I assume you play a thief because you complain like this AoE sorta effects you who has been used to sneaking up and getting free kills for a while on an easy build against bad players) to kill them… OR you can get some ranged!!!!!!!!!! If you go full melee in WvWvW then you should assume you are going to be less useful. That will NEVER change so long as their is a single viable damage build for range on any class.

AH with Greatsword - without Hammer?

in Guardian

Posted by: DaedalusDragon.3754

DaedalusDragon.3754

I go full knight’s armor and berserker everything else. I run 0/15/30/20/5 and that is a perfect build imo. That build runs AH incredibly. Plus I use runes of lyssa so when I use renewed focus I get a 600ish heal and all boons for 5 seconds. The greatsword is far superior to the hammer (imo) because it is much more mobile and you don’t have to sit still for the protection procs to get the AH healing and protection from it. I run GS and scepter/focus.

And as somebody already said, with this build you can change the major traits (don’t even have to reset points) and get a great meditation healing build.

To answer your questions about conditions, I use the meditations and the two meditation major traits in Valor and then I have a meditation that converts all conditions to boons and one skill that removes one condition and does aoe damage. Not perfect condition removal but it is quite a bit of help.

as in a ghost that you can flail around…? a specter? I think you meant scepter…

Anyways, I think a lot more testing needs to be done before you can say that it is the worst weapon in the game…

And just a piece of advice, if your first language is not english, that is fine. But don’t use “coz” and “sooooooooooooo” and “cata” if you want to be taken seriously. Most people understand the difficulties of getting your point across over a language barrier but it is hard to take someone seriously when they use such informal language to get their point across.

Is AoE actually a problem? - Discussion Thread

DaedalusDragon.3754

To those for the AoE nerf on this page:
Really, l2p. If you take full damage from an AoE that ticks damage over a period of time then you REALLY have to l2p. Do I get a giant red flashing light over my head when someone is about to hit me with a single target skill? No. AoE already has a lot of balancing aspects thrown into it. AoE can’t hit more than 5 targets and most of them have a long startup time, long cast times, roots the player, have long cooldowns, puts shiny red circle on the ground, and some (meteor shower) may not even hit anybody! They do more damage in total because if you get hit with it I cover my face in shame at your inability to react to avoidable damage.

If you don’t think that balances it out then imagine this: What if thieves heartseeker (or w/e skill that kills in a hit or two) had a 2 second cast time the first time they used it on a player (still better than aoes, not even counting massive cooldowns) even when invisible and also flashed a red icon over the players head. Now if the player is still hit and killed it is most definitely their own fault because they had all the warning in the world.

Guardian vs Warrior

in Guardian

Posted by: DaedalusDragon.3754

Warrior is better in every aspect besides FOTM. Prove me wrong.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/pvp/This-is-why-your-WARRIOR-SUCK-Part-1/

That guy is just ranting about how he sucks.

Warriors:
Amazing Burst
Capability of being an awesome team support through shouts/banners
Range Options

Guardian:
Self Healing through AH, MH or stacking clerics with staff
Medicare Damage at best
No Range Options
Usually playstyle as team support

Do go on.

Threads like these are silly, but I have to respond to this. Most warriors who have “amazing burst” are as tough as a sheet of tissue paper and are a hindrance in most dungeons. I will admit that warriors give awesome offensive buffs.

As for guardians. Guardians can give a melee group permanent protection, stability, aegis, regen, condition removal… you get the picture. Guardians bring the defensive boons that are critical to a dungeon group. Also, the statement about having “mediocre damage at best” is so far from the truth it’s silly. It all depends on the build that the player is rolling with. Guardians can spec for very good damage output while still having more survivability than a warrior. Remember that dead dps = no dps.

Guardians can’t do permanent protection, stability, aegis, regen, or condition removal… You can have a little bit of all of those things or a lot of one of those things (maybe two) but at that point you have sacrificed any semblance of damage. And how on earth do you see guardians doing great damage? A guardian will never do the damage of the warrior but to get even close has to give up all forms of survivability. Guardians have the smallest health pool tied with elementalists. Warriors get a huge health pool to make default survivability. Guardians get aegis once every 40 seconds. My friend plays a warrior a lot (his main 80) and he has a lot of survivability while also still maintaining much higher damage than I can burst when I go 70% damage, 30% defense.

Some thoughts on the Guardian Mechanic

I used the sword/torch and loved it. It does need some tweaks to make it more viable but I still matched or got very close to GS damage but it took high precision and specifically traiting for it and even then it wasn’t quite as effective, though still pretty good. I HATE HATE HATE the hammer. The hammer, in my opinion, only has 2 skills. The immobilize is ok, but would be a lot better if it wasn’t just a straight line that missed all of the time. I HATE knockbacks in group situation (vast majority of content) because it screws everybody up and so I won’t use it myself unless interrupting and even that is hard since the 4 skill has a massive cast time. The 5 skill is my least favorite, why would I want to block other enemies out if I WANT to do AoE damage? All of that plus the ridiculously small range on the 2 leap and the RIDICULOUSLY long cast times of the auto attacks and I just won’t use it. GS is superior in every way imho.

PVE. I don’t play the other game modes, so no idea if this works there. Also note that my topic title isn’t meant to be taken literally, I just really wanted to use the LotR quote.

I’ve been using a 0/15/30/20/5 (http://www.gw2db.com/skills/calc/guardian#7|0|3527|3406|3410|1311|3411|0|0|0|0|15|1828|0|0|30|2281|2175|1395|20|866|2274|0|5|0|0|0|0|0|0|0|0|49978|49978|49978|49978|49978|0|0|0|0|0|0|) with full Knight’s armor and full Berserkers jewelry and GS. My Second weapon is a staff (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Silence) and I only really use it for swiftness and the awesome might stacking/AH healing it gives. My sigils are constantly changing but right now I’m using Superior Sigil of Restoration on my GS (can change anytime…) and Superior Sigil of Leeching on my staff (just trying it out in general).

With this build I can spam Virtue of Justice whenever I kill an enemy (great in mobs) which blinds the enemies clustered around me, gives burning to everybody’s weapon around me, gives 3 might to everybody around me and myself, and heals me for 72*3 per person given might (including myself). I use my utilities as stun breakers (a lot of AC runs). The vast majority of my criticals (all crits, separated by about 1 sec cooldown) gives everybody and myself a stack of might (Empowering Might) which also heals me for 72 per person affected. The last thing of note is that each time I use a healing skill I get a random boon (Runes of Lyssa) and whenever I use my elite skill I get every boon for 5 seconds which is a 648 heal, not much but it is extra.

To be honest though, my topic isn’t really about my build. I wanted to share it for anybody wanting a great build (imho) that does quite a bit of damage but also has very nice survivability in large group events. The great thing about this build is that there are traits and utility skills and even a secondary weapon that could all be changed and change very little so there is a lot of customization to be had. What I was wanting was to change my build for a change of pace but when I tried I ran into this problem, I was never gaining enough damage to make up for the huge hit to survivability. It always seemed like a bad trade off.

So my question to everybody is, what builds do you use that offer more damage (than mine) but isn’t very squishy? But if you also have questions or comments on my current build I’d be happy to answer or respond to them as well.

Side note: Please don’t give me builds focused on the hammer. I despise the hammer only because of how slow it feels. I’m not saying that it is bad but I can’t stand playing with it personally. Just a personal opinion.

Patch Notes?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

DaedalusDragon.3754

I’m confused, how do other games release patch notes (or a list of changes NOT related to the TP (or AH)) early then? It has never been an issue with other games as far as I know. I’m also very very confused about how anybody could not be sure what was getting released today. Shouldn’t all of this have been tested, tested, and re-tested before today? If not releasing something is related to the actual process of patching and some error there then isn’t there a method for testing that? I admit you can’t foresee every outcome but within reasonable doubt you can assume most will work before it is ever patched. How much testing actually takes place behind closed doors?

let me illustrate a point that though i didn’t express, it was more a read between the lines thing that ties in succinctly with mark’s official post.

what if a recipe was released in the patch notes that said for ‘x new item,’ you need:

250 powerful sacs of venom
150 mystic coins
200 karka shells
50 globs of ectoplasm

now, as per mark’s post, what if this recipe was not 100% working, yet according to the entitlement whiners here, the patch notes are due NO MATTER THE CONDITION OF THE PATCH ITSELF?

tp manips would go buy up these items furiously and artificially raise prices to astounding levels. then guess what? the recipe DOES NOT WORK.

now 3 things happen here:

1. the manips get kitten at anet, even though it wasn’t their fault. ‘when it’s done, it’s done.’

2. those who needed those mats are punished for the impatience of the people pushing for patch notes.

3. both parties lose confidence in anet’s ability to deliver, EVEN THOUGH IT WASN’T ANET’S FAULT.

gosh people really. learn to be patient.

You should read at least 1 sentence of my post… it would have saved you a lot of time. “or a list of changes NOT related to the TP (or AH)” I fully understand not adding in changes that directly or indirectly relate to the TP, but there are many changes (class, events, etc) that can be disclosed much earlier without much if any problems.

And on this “What if they find a problem 10 minutes before the patch is released” thing: If that happens, there wasn’t decent testing going on. Why are we getting a patch that they aren’t even sure about? Why are we getting a patch that they think might still hold some critical bug? If you aren’t sure (within a reasonable doubt) that this won’t go off without too many hiccups, and you aren’t sure enough to disclose patch info, then it probably hasn’t been tested enough. I do NOT want to be some QA group. That makes the game look like a beta and it shouldn’t be.

So imagine you are watching your favorite sport and your favorite team is playing. Now imagine something big is about to happen that decides the outcome of the game that others might (depending on how it turns out) be talking about for some time. Now imagine that your cable company shuts down their network to update or some such right then.

Just about the same thing happening here.

Rofl… post of the year… and what happened? Did anyone die? Did an economy collapse because someone missed seeing a goal? Seriously, if I’m watching something and my tv goes out, you know what I do? Well, actually I don’t know what exactly I do, but I definitely don’t freak out, I go do something else, eat, sleep, drink, party, talk to people, play video games, whatever… if gw2 goes out for a few hours, I go do something else, no one dies, nothing awful happens… relax, your life is not guild wars…

I won? I WON?? I WON POST OF THE YEAR!!!!!! Where’s my money!?

I wasn’t using that to say the world ends, I was trying to say that these patches come out of nowhere, when people might be in the middle of dungeons or FotM or any other thing and this effectively stops them and makes them restart. A general time of an hour or so would really help people prepare for some downtime. I was never trying to say that my life or anybody’s life should be upset by not knowing when this might happen more than a waste of time and an inconvenience.

“I’m so excited, and I just can’t hide it”

I love the feeling of hope and optimism that I have before the notes are officially released and I find out all my classes are nerfed but the Porous Bone drop rate has been increased to “compensate”.

I find this hilarious… mostly because this is definitely going to happen. “The elementalist had 1 viable build so we nerfed it, but if you raise up a warrior you can find more porous bone more often… that makes you feel better right?”

Lol This thread was probably created just so they could destroy the other threads that were already negative regarding this topic.

I hope it makes me say “I love this patch and want to continue playing!” and not “nerfing is not balancing… same old same old… why oh why anet, why do you hate the poor elementalist… probably shouldn’t have hyped this with a cool website…” which is what I think after most patches (except the cool website one, because lets face it, the F&F website is nice).

Here is to the last thread of optimism I have in these not-so-old old bones.

1 word: Dejavu

and then other words because forum god “Error Prevented Saving” says so

and then also, I agree Xavion. I’m a decently patient person but I hate it when I’m told to be patient with a business… especially one who doesn’t have great customer service as it is. I honestly understand that their might be people who QQ if the update is pushed back after they promised a time, but that is a way to build trust which is SEVERELY lacking right now. Trust us and the mature among us won’t lash out at you. The others will follow suit eventually.

Yeah, this invites an unhealthy discussion as we have already seen from the other topic in this forum about, nearly, the exact same thing.

Hence, Yonarq. Thanks for proving my point ;D

I hate how everyone calls for buffs to strong classes because a few builds aren’t perfect and they want more than 3-4 viable builds (warrior, thief, mesmer (? maybe)) but everybody hates the elementalist because it has one slightly OP build at the moment and ONLY one build.

So, I hope that they balance the game and make it so, amongst other things, the elementalist has more than 1 viable build… oh and also they scrap the AoE nerf that makes this game Warrior Wars 2.
