Why did they choose an Anet employee who doesn’t have the communicative skills to answer these questions? Poor dear can barely string a sentence together. Although it does explain the overuse of PR-approved key phrase “moving forward” and how long it’s taking to reply.

If it takes 5 minutes to type a three line response, then either you’re thinking too hard, or need a course in typing. Either way, it’s frustrating for people waiting for answers to their burning questions on the game you’re creating, meanwhile taking forever to say how much you like Mario…

I was as frustrated with recent decisions ANet has made as anyone else, but I don’t believe the players’ credibility is enhanced by insulting individual members of their team. I’m sure they’re feeling pretty overwhelmed and are paddling as fast as they can to assuage the masses. Picking a spectrum of questions to answer would seem the best course to take from their perspective, so answering with his favorite games seems reasonable.

People need to stop being such hard kitten and stop and think for a second what it would be like to try to make so many people happy all at one time.

As I said, I was pretty frustrated with the introduction of ascendant gear, but the responses I’ve seen today lead me to believe that they are recognizing the issues they’ve created and are trying to get back on course as quickly and smoothly as they can.

I won’t hesitate to point out issues I see in the future, but I fully intend to keep in mind that it’s only been 3 months and they’ve done a lot of things very well. Patience is a virtue all of us could stand to work on.

My take on the following quote by Chris Whiteside during this AMA is that they realize they shouldn’t have made the ascended gear available via only one facet of the game. I have the same concerns you do, and I was tremendously encouraged by what he said in this response:

Really interesting question. Our intention is to deploy ascended components and gear across the whole of the game rather than focus it in one particular location. This was a a mistake and one that we will not be making moving forward. We do hope to find a balance and ensure that the world of Guild Wars 2 is as accessible and populated as possible and moving forward you will be able to see how we intend to execute on this goal.

I’m certainly not a fan of running dungeons over and over, ad nauseum, but I do love a challenging group effort (if the group is friendly and not hell bent on breaking speed records). I like to see the content, too, at least once and maybe more in this game because my understanding is you can choose different paths in some of the dungeons.

I don’t care about the repair bills as long as people are having fun and are supportive of one another.
I’m having a problem getting into farming, though. I’d love a legendary or two eventually, so I guess I need to suck it up and get into that groove!

Please list be more specific. What items are you missing? How many points did you have in the HoM?

The mystic forge is the fountain-like thing that stands between the bank and the Trading Post in Lion’s Arch. If you go to the Traders Forum Waypoint, you’ll be standing right next to it. There’s one for pvp stuff, too, in the heart of the mists.

When you approach the forge, you’ll see an option to “use” pop up. If you click it, four boxes will appear into which you can place the items you want to “forge”. At the same time, a window will appear showing you which items in your bags are eligible to be placed into the forge. You can read more about it in the wiki.

It is my hope that even if they didn’t have the courage to express those thoughts in the blog (showing some humility at how very badly a lot of the event went), that they realize and have taken to heart that they have much to address and correct in terms of how they communicate and the perception that they have abandoned their own manifesto.

I used to have fun with GW2. Not anymore. I am a veteran of mmos, going back to 1999 with Mankind, and then with EVE Online, Project Enthropia, DDO, Shaiya, KoK3, etc. GW2 started off amazingly well. I loved it! You needed to be good at tactics, strategy, long term planning and you needed to have keyboard and mouse skill as well (which I love as I type very fast and have very good reflexes).
However, GW2 is fast becoming a very anti social game. To begin with, you hardly need to talk to anyone to do anything. There is very little friendship making at all, in fact, it is the first time that I play any mmo where i have not made any new friends at all (despite trying). The only friends I have in the game came from other games we used to play together.
Then bots appeared. Then the lag. (was it the other way around? hehe). Every time I found something that needed addressing (lag, bots, drop rates, DR, etc) every single time I mentioned it in chat, someone would immediately jump up and start insulting me, or telling me to stop whining, crying, or to leave the chat and kitten . GW2 chat channels are so empty already as it is, they want to keep anyone from saying anything that is bothering them? It has become so bad that today I just mentioned about how weird it is (and annoying) that champion and veteran mobs hardly ever drop any loot (& when it drops it is porous bones) yet spider hatchlings have consistently given me rares and masterwork every single time, and these guys who apparently must have been just waiting for anyone to say anything, started insulting me and making me look like an idiot.
They spoiled the game so much for me that I just stopped playing. Not that much to do when you are level 80 and have 100% map completion anyway. Hardly anyone talks, nothing exciting going on, all events are the same and are now botted to infinite and beyond so this was the last straw for me.
Funny that I mostly get killed only when I run around reviving people. Every single time I see a dead or downed player on the mini map I run to them to help them. But god forbid I try to say something in chat.

With that said, it is very likely I will stop playing GW2, at least for a while.

This is my experience, it is like forever alone and the chat windows are dead, are there actually others playing i sometimes wonder, i thought i might actually make friends to play with, but it has been so bleak, i will always help out where i can and i always say thankyou when i have been res, that first dungeon i did no communication at all and no direction given, hopeless, i’d like to do it again, but don’t want to feel like i’ve let my party members down.

I hope having made some contacts through this group will make your experience in GW2 much more pleasant. It makes all the difference to have folks to call on when you’re stuck or need a group to complete something or just plain want a little company for a change.

As for the dungeon experience, I can understand your trepidation completely. I am so curious to see how it all works without the classic “trinity” type of setup. I’m used to following and targetting off of a tank, etc., and the interplay this game offers is something I’d like to do enough to feel proficient at. Hell, I just want to see it in action!

Anyway, I’m hopeful that we’ll be able to get all of our collective gaming ya-yas grooving!

Since you can’t sell or salvage your karma purchased gear, you might consider saving them until you have enough to throw into the Mystic Forge. At least this way, you have the chance to get something you CAN salvage or sell… and maybe something great to actually use!

This has been reported a number of times that I’ve seen. It may be that the thread has been merged or moved or is in the midst of some kind of change.

In the meantime, if you want to get to your post, click on your profile and see if you can’t access it from there. Your profile will show a list of all of your recent postings.

@Glitch — I really do enjoy helping other players. Sometimes I’m afraid people will think I’m nosy or a closet stalker or something because I will often watch other players for a minute or two if I see they are going after something that looks tough. I don’t like to intrude but I’ll jump in if it looks like they can use some help.

@Akamon — I’m in Topeka, KS, which is about 5 hours west of St. Louis. That’s a really great part of the country, very historical (as you no doubt know), with lots to see and do. Topeka is not nearly so diverse in its offerings, but I like it anyway! HK… now there’s a city with some serious history. It’s the epitomy of “exotic” when you’re situated where I am!

I really am quite keen on jumping into some dungeons. Coordinating may be a bit tricky for the next few weeks as we’re in the thick of the holidays now. I’ll be watching for a guild invite and once that’s accomplished it’ll be easier to line up some runs.

@Bri — Hello fellow Ranger! I had to laugh when I saw your comment about fur and feathers flying re: three rangers had volunteered for that dungeon (as I play one too!). Fabulous, isn’t it, to have the freedom to field groups with any conceivable combination?

I am so happy to have finally read this thread and found people who are absolutely counter-elitist! Bravo to you all!

I have enjoyed this game very much so far and view it as a long term thing that I’m not in a hurry to plow through.

My main is level 80, a ranger (Deb), and I have managed to get her geared in mostly exotics. I have some alts in the works that I am enjoying.

The only thing I haven’t really tried yet is the dungeons. Pugs seem to be populated by folks that expect you to know the dungeons well now.

If I were to manage to find a group, I fear I’d be dragged through the instance at top speed and I would far prefer to learn the dungeons with other players who don’t mind if we don’t break a speed record getting thru them. I’m a pretty patient soul and don’t quit easily, so bailing on my dungeon group isn’t in my vocabulary.

I do have some dungeoning/raiding experience from having played some other MMOs (WOW,SWToR, Rift, Aion), so I have a sort of broad idea of what to expect. Also, I have my own vent, but can load Mumble.

Forgive me for babbling, but I feel like I’m coming in late to this gathering you’ve created and would like you to know a bit more than just name, rank and serial number.

There are back pieces that drop in the new dungeon. Maybe that’s what you were thinking of?

People may be listing these items on the TP for 400-500g, but I have a hard time believing they’re actually selling at that price.

I participated in the final event last Sunday and didn’t get a precursor and don’t know anybody that did. I don’t doubt that there were very rare occasions where someone may have gotten two, but those had to be extremely rare occurrences.

It was a reward in the chest for the final event in Southsun yesterday. I think that was primarily what it was designed for, and the stats intended to be of some use to the broadest number of players.

As for those asking who would possibly use it… the answer would be anyone who doesn’t have better yet, and I would guess that applies to a considerable number of players. If you’ve got better, good for you, don’t use this one.

See, this is where, depending on your view point, I either lose out or am just too principled for my own good. It would never even occur to me to do this kind of thing.

I think there are a good number of folks who learned the hard way not to stand in the green goo yesterday.

It’s probably not right to judge, though, because there was a serious rendering issue. Many times I could not see the Karka we were fighting and I’m betting that seeing the goo was a problem for some folks too. I’m ranged so staying at max distance helped a little with dealing with pools of poison.

As for running back, I did it three times… often enough that I am now a pro at dodging veteran karka along the way.

I enjoyed participating in the event, got two exotics that I could use for my main and an alt and of course the accessory and the 20 slot bag. I was pretty happy to get these.

I belong to a tiny guild, only three of us were on and none of us got or heard that anyone else had received precursors, so this is all a surprise to me. I would have loved to have gotten one, but I know very well how RNG works, so I’m ok with not having been one of the lucky ones.

I think it’s a terrible idea to take these rewards back. I hope that’s a notion that isn’t even considered.

Nope. I’ve learned that generally it’s a waste of time to burn vacation hours for these sorts of things. They’ll be there when I get off work.

Remember that countless trial visitors were part of the deal today. Not sure how they would balance servers with that going on.

I"ve googled and wiki’ed “captain’s council commendation” and can only find info like the above, about recipes to make them.

I just think it’s odd that people would use mats to make something, not knowing whether what they’re making even has a purpose.

Since it looks like that’s an inevitability my sincere hope at this point, then, is that there are provided multiple avenues to access that gear: dungeons + pvp + crafting.

I enjoyed the hell out of Diessa Plateau, and yes, starting out with Meatoberfest had a lot to do with it! The old “YMMV” certainly is true.

The OP never verified that MF gear was even part of the equation. While I can see that MF gear could conceivably cause an issue, so could a glass cannon setup or poor trait/skill choices.

What everyone seems to ignore is that the prime issue is skill level, which you can not screen for. Why bother with gear checks, then? You could be elminating someone who actually knows what they’re doing.

OP, how many pugs have you run (where group members were not screened for gear) that went well? Was this instance a rare occurance by comparison? I think people tend to throw the baby out with the bath water as a result of one bad experioence.

Why is it that any time drop rates are fiddled with in any game, it always goes wrong? I haven’t seen a single dye since the latest tweak, either.

Agreed, 100% that WvWvW needs to be free of the need to grind for gear. ANet said pvp would be unaffected, so they need to extend that beyond sPVP to WvWvW.

Slic… I don’t know how they could come to the conclusion that the majority want a gear treadmill. They never polled in-game, and if they took that from the forums, the 9k+ post thread at the top of the forums now should tell them something because the majority there do not want anything to do with grind.

Mine were gone instantly. I could have given away three times the trial codes. Now… whether any of those would translate into full purchases later is totally up in the air.

I have followed everything that ANet said about the game prior to it’s release and I don’t remember ever seeing anything about there not being any kind of character progression in the following years.
If that is the case and my characters stay the same for the entire life of the game, with all my love for GW I will drop it in a couple of months. I truly hope there will be more of a gear progression than this, , given that exotic gear is a joke to get.
Stop patting just the casuals on the head, give something for the more hardcore players too.
And can you actually say that you even need exotic gear to enjoy the content of the game? Hell, you can do all the dungeons and PVE in green gear just fine.

It bothers me too that they promised that there will be no grinding and most of the game is grinding. But it doesn’t bother me because of the grind itself. I had the pleasure to grind for a legendary and I can say it was 99% a huge grind. No, it bothers me that they lied about it, that they didn’t live up to their promises.

But better gear? Hell yea.

People who want to have the freedom to pick up the game and play it after a break don’t want their character to become “more powerful.”

The entire concept that your character becomes more powerful with higher stat gear is an illusion anyway. The content is still going to be designed around the stat cap, no matter how high the stat cap is. The only thing it does is make older content a little easier.

No, older content becoming easier is not something to be desired. That’s why ArenaNet designed their content scaling, after all.

If you do want to be chasing after new gear for the higher stats every few months, then that’s fine. You can do that in games that are designed that way. This game was specifically marketed as not following that model, though.

Well said, Zed. When I saw Chris Whiteside had posted, I had a flash of hope, but on actually reading his response I see we have gone from being sold a bill of goods to being “handled”. More creative marketing, I guess.

Like so many others, I’m disappointed that perceived concerns about giving players more to do were addressed by abandoning the core principles of the game. I am genuinely disappointed because it didn’t have to go this way. It’s sad, really. I hope it can be salvaged, but it’s hard to have faith when the logic on the surface seems so utterly flawed.

Another angle to this: I’ve heard that bots are now spamming group invites to try to cover their activities. The examples I read about were in Cursed Shore, but conceivably, this could be happening anywhere in the game. Just be mindful of this possibility and avoid grouping if it looks suspicious.

Late breaking bulletin that may give the OP something to look forward to, it appears there are lots of changes coming in the next patch to professions, ostensibly these changes would have the potential to tweak pvp abilities:

2 months is not a lot of time. Especially compared to any other game that has had years to get their legs under them.

I have a stack I’ve gotten as rewards. I can see where they would come in handy. I would probably never buy them from the gem store, though.

GW1 gameplay is completely different than GW2. It would make me nuts switching back and forth. The suggestion to find Woodenpotatoes’ lore video is an excellent one. I have watched it to get the recap and came away completely satisfied.

Not to beat a dead horse, but the Alienware gaming laptops are designed to be easily “taken apart, clean out, and modify”. You can find TONS of information regarding every conceivable current laptop available at www.notebookreview.com. It really would be smart to do some thorough research before committing to any specific brand or configuration.

I’ll group, but it’s mostly for social reasons. Any mmo I’ve never been big on grouping to level, I’m just not patient enough to wait on other people lol.

Other night I grouped with guildies to help one out, and they all ended up standing around. So I went and did my thing, I can talk just as well with you in another zone AND quest.

This, except in my case, I want to be able to do what I want on the spur of the moment, whether it’s detours for gathering or taking an impromptu break to go outside with the dog.

I’m lazy, too. When I’m playing, I’m playing… I don’t want to be “talking” via the keyboard, which would sometimes be necessary with strangers. If I do group, it’s with family and friends who have my vent info and we can communicate the easy way.

I noticed a significant increase in dye drops on Sunday. Here’s hoping this will continue!

Another basic is to be sure to keep a set of gathering tools equipped. Gather every plant, tree and ore node you come across! You’ll get experience for your effort, you’ll stock your mat supply for crafting and/or have mats to sell for in game cash at the trading post.

If the “item” you’re referring to for your Asura is the blue orb that transports you to the HoM, the item is account bound. You can pass it back and forth from character to character via the bank. When you create a new character, a new HoM transport orb should be created for them. IIRC, it shows up in the mail. So, if you’ve accidentally deleted your HoM orb and have an open character slot, you could create a character, put their orb in the bank, then delete the character to free the slot back up.

As for getting items from the vendor, try highlighting the item, then clicking “buy” at the bottom of the purchase window. The item should end up in your bag. I “buy” a stack at a time so that I don’t have to come back so often.

The announcement on the forums (the “heads up” sticky) was made the same day the dungeon was pulled. I do my best to stay current re: game announcements, especially during special events and this was the only notice I saw. Unfortunately, the posting only provided a few hours of “heads up” and the dungeon was gone before I got home from the office.

I’m not upset that I missed out on the title because of this. I had fun throughout the event, but I believe communication could have been better.

P.S. Thank you, Jakhammer for posting the specifics about that notice. As you pointed out, you’d have to be playing very late to have seen the in-game announcement. I was already at work on the 31st before I saw the forum announcement, and the dungeon was pulled before I got home.

As LameFox pointed out, my bear is on what appears to be a permanent vacation from my ranger’s pet rotation purely because that’s now the stereotype for a bot.
