Waiting For Death [WFD]
@ Borlis Pass Server
Its you people that say “its fine, let them leave in droves” that are going to long term harm this game.
You know what would be even worse for it? If ArenaNet did a complete 180 on everything they’ve been saying for the past three years just to cater to a no-lifer minority that still thinks MMO = gear treadmills.
Everything on this game is a treadmill. like any other mmos, all they did was make the leveling process abit more fun (which it was).
So why can’t they have an end-game with the same philosphy? why would making a fun end-game be against this philosophy?
BEcause casuals like yourself would complain you couldn’t get epic gear because you don’t like raiding?
Well why doenst “if you dont like it dont do it” apply to people like you then? hypocritical waste of time.
You mean why can’t they change their vision and design for the game to be exactly like WoW and Rift and Aion, etc., etc., ad nauseum? Why should they? Why shouldn’t they be allowed… and heaven forbid, ENCOURAGED, to build the game that THEY designed?
Why, after only THREE WEEKS, should they bow to demands to change their entire concept and throw together a treadmill for those who can’t imagine there’s another way to do things.
Here’s an idea… let them build the game they want to build. Give them some actual time to realize their design. In the meantime, if you want to raid, run on over to WoW. I hear the Pandas are opening their doors in about a week.
In another six months or year, we’ll know much, much more about how their vision is manifesting itself and in that timeframe it would be more reasonable to give the public’s input some credence. Now? Not so much.
The problem is, like it or not, gamers are terribly impatient. There won’t be a community left a year from now. Let’s not have this game go the way of SWTOR and WAR. It takes approx. 4 to 12 weeks to kill a fledgling MMO.
Defending the current state of the game is not the way to save it.
Really? You believe that counsel given on these forums by the impatient, cynical and entitled is the prescription for the longterm health of this or any MMO? Okie dokie.
Its an unfortunate occurrence in all forums in all games where the naysayers dominate the conversation, while those people that like the game rarely post or even bother with forums.
Which gives the illusion that “everyone” is horribly dissatisfied with the game. When its really a pretty small percentile.
It’s definitely the outspoken minority vs the silent majority, which makes sense. People are going to be less inclined to voice opinions if they’re positive as opposed to soap-boxing inane issues.
This “Vocal Minority” ends up being the majority like most failed MMOs, this is the same defence rubbish you get it every one of these forums.
Reality here is this game is missing a gigantic element of what makes an MMO so good in the more popular ways of the genre.
The reality is also that there is no reason for it really not to exist in this game either.
So we are fighting for it.
Its you people that say “its fine, let them leave in droves” that are going to long term harm this game.
I think the vocal minority is often egotistical enough to believe that they know more and better about what should be done than the creators/developers of the game. I think that’s ridiculous, given that most forum posters know doodly about coding, marketing, business and everything else that it takes to create and support an MMO.
The folks at Arenanet fostered this baby for 7 years. I think they should be given an opportunity to continue to develope their vision. I also think they’re terribly generous to allow the masses to comment so liberally about what’s going on, given that much of the commentary is less than helpful.
In another six months or year, we’ll know much, much more about how their vision is manifesting itself and in that timeframe it would be more reasonable to give the public’s input some credence. Now? Not so much.
OP, There is no universal law stating that MMOs have to compensate players at any particular rate or level of loot. I don’t think the rewards I’m seeing are out of line with what I’ve seen in other games. I do think there are a good number of players with pretty hugely misplaced expectations about where they should be 3 weeks into the game.
I keep hoping to find some information about this. I did notice that since my ferocity led the pack, I’ve earned the label “Brute” in that box.

Permission denied, OP. Seriously. It’s not cute or funny.
Once your items are moved into the “collectible” area of your bank, they are completely accessible for crafting. I believe, if some posts I’ve read today are correct, that as of today, you don’t need to move items like insignias to your bags to have them available for Discovery now. They are now visible to the Discovery “program” whilst sitting cozily in their bank slot.

Overflow is ANet’s way of saving you from having to stare at a queue number while you wait in line to get logged in. It’s a temporary holding pen… you’re not meant to be able to have access to everything, you’re only meant to be distracted from your wait to get on to your normal server.
Good advice. Too often, I’ve seen people run off immediately after an event wraps up, completely missing the next “chapter”.
I don’t understand how it works, either, but it does create a very amusing image. I think maybe they should allow it to continue to work with occasionally unexpected results.
I see legendaries as a long term goal. Maybe REALLY long term, but honestly, they are not an absolute requirement for me. I’m certainly not going to stew over it.
Why does it have to be equal? Why can’t Kal take the loot he got for doing something easy and then enjoy doing something hard without worrying about loot? Seems to me Kal has tied himself to a treadmill for all the wrong reasons.
I don’t have tons of gold on my characters, but I’m able to buy what I want from the TP without any problem. I don’t really care about making tons of money in the game. That’s not how I play, that’s not what I find enjoyable. If people want to spend their time playing the market, more power to them. To me, that just sounds like another job and that’s not what I want from my recreational time. tyvm.
@Swagman.9013
Well, if i would play a puzzle just for the pleasure of solving it, I would like games like uncharted, but no, I’m playing an rpg with levels and items. There are lots of adventure games with puzzles, hell, there are even lots of puzzle games. But this game has levels and items. If I am playing this game, it’s because I love to get new things, spells, items, skills… If I woulnt like to improve my char, I would play a game that focuses on solving puzzles, or whatever.
This game has some puzzles, but it has 80 levels, lots of skills, hundreds (thousends?) of items…. don’t tell me: this game is not about the loot.Totally agree with you. Its mind numbing how so many people keep going off about “play for the fun of the game” “the game is the reward” “fun is fun”
This game is loot based. The whole point of these games is to get sweet lootz and look cool. I love getting precious lootz. Its half the reason I even play RPG’s. The other half is the exploring and combat with buddies. In the end tho I want my exploring and combat to pay off with cool looking loot. Is that so much to ask for?
Wait… I thought the complaints were that it WASN’T loot based. If you’re not getting all the loot you seem to want, how can it be loot based? Ohhh.. it’s NOT loot based after all, is it? You just WISH it were loot based.
I love finding and solving puzzles. I also love the surprise of what might be in any chest I find at the end. If I can’t use the reward, one of my alts or guildies usually can. Besides, I’d do them even if there were no chests or rewards at the end. I think people are too reward driven and need to focus more on enjoying what they’re doing than what they might or might not be getting after it’s all over.
The plan, as I understand it, is to introduce a great deal more content over time. I think it’s only reasonable to let them build on the existing structure as planned. Those plans, of course, may or may not include the things you’re suggesting. I’m pretty much stating the obvious because I find it hard to witness a constant stream of posts asking ANet to dismantle and reform what they’ve constructed when the game is only 3 weeks old.
It does seem odd, given ANet’s stated aim to reduce griefing wherever/whenever possible, that they’d include these puzzles (which are needed for world completion) in pvp zones. They had to know this was going to be a problem for those who don’t like to pvp.
It would be interesting to hear their rationale behind such placements.

I have usually played ranger type classes in other games and started playing GW2 as a ranger. That character is now level 72. I’d played other professions during the BWEs, however, and enjoyed them thoroughly for the brief time that I had access to them.
Ultimately, I decided I was going to play every profession for whatever period of time that I had fun… so I now also have a level 25 elementalist, a level 18 warrior, a level 5 engineer and a level 8 necro. I switch between them as the mood suits me. So far I’m enjoying each of them. I have yet to try mesmer, thief and guardian, and I may find any one of them not to my liking, but that’s ok. At least I won’t have limited my experience.
Each of my characters has a unique race and profession. Why would you want to homogenize the experience?
I come from 8 years of FFXI. I’ve always wondered why other mmos made you switch characters to do something different. Right now I have a 43 Elementalist, I’m having fun with it, but I want to try out different classes. I mean I’m getting pretty much every other armor BUT my elementalist armor from drops. I should go use them with out having to mail them to my other char. Also, why would I want to go do the same hearts all over again?
I’m playing three different characters and have often seen unique content that I didn’t see the first time through a zone. GW2 is a densely detailed world. I am enjoying seeing it on more than one character.
Each of my characters has a unique race and profession. Why would you want to homogenize the experience?
Nope, I wouldn’t want to do that. I would much prefer to create a separate unique character for each unique profession. Thankfully, this is how the game is designed.
If you try to close the character pane after using dye remover (without first re-coloring the items you’ve stripped of color), a crash will happen. If you re-color the portions of your gear first, it works without a problem. It’s almost as if the program can’t remember what the original color was, so it crashes if you don’t pick a new color first.
I’ll try that, Elle. Thanks!
Edit: I’m good now. Many thanks for the fix, Elle!
TY for posting, greenshirt. I was hoping it wasn’t related to the PW change.
I am getting an “ERROR: Invalid Authorization” on attempting to open the TP in-game. I see lots of people using the TP tonight so I’m concerned I’m getting this because I changed my PW this afternoon. Is that a possible cause?
They need dungeons that take more than 5 people.
For a supposedly social game, it doesn’t feel very social.I agree, for the wonderful scaling this game offers depending on how many people are present in the area, I’m surprised they haven’t added a dungeon scaling yet to cater to both small 5-man parties up to 20-man parties (random number, I’m sure ArenaNet would have a more suitable number if scaling was implemented) for those who have a bigger crowd of friends who want to stick together.
I don’t understand why a handful of people are anti larger dungeons in this game, using reasons like “it promotes elitism” to back up their disdain for larger-sized dungeon scaling when this game is tailored to not promote elitism that is acquired through gear (and vertical progression, something GW2 doesn’t really cater to) that makes your character better than someone who does 5-man of the same dungeon. Players would still be equal with no loot/badge advantage from playing in a larger group assuming scaled dungeons were balanced 100% in a perfect world.
Balanced dungeon scaling would encourage friends overall to play together no matter if they have a smaller group of friends or a larger group, and not force friends to have to “choose” who they want to bring in the petite 5-man size, leaving other friends behind to pug, get frustrated they weren’t chosen for this small group, or find a game elsewhere where they can play with all of their friends at once.
Raids just aren’t part of the plan. They never have been. Even if you shoehorned them in, what would you do about drops? You’d skew the current gear distribution design. You’d have to overhaul the game. And if you do that, the game isn’t different at all. Why don’t you just go play (and enjoy) a game that has raids?
(edited by Debsylvania.7396)
Gear isn’t the only possible form of progression. I can understand though, how alien that might feel, after being on that hamster wheel for so long.
Yes, as harumph has pointed out, there must be something wrong with the location at which you’re working. As long as you have gathering tools equipped (and at level 9 the beginner tools should be fine), you should be able to gather any crop-type item that you encounter.
This game doesn’t require that you attain a certain level to harvest an ore, wood or foodstuff node, it just requires you to equip the appropriate level tools, else you might get damaged goods when you harvest. You will need to buy the next level of gathering tools when you reach level 10.
Wow. There’s no reason to go all condescending. Your point is no more valid than anyone else’s, Zann. It’s apparent that the developers’ vision of how guild communications should work didn’t include inter-lacing guild chats. Suggestions are great but condescension is unnecessary.
Private chat channels do make more sense.

I tried playing my other MMOs while waiting for the GW2 launch. Having played in the BWE weekends, it was clear which style of gameplay I was wanting… and I wasn’t getting it outside of GW2.
I’m with you, Leiloni. The people I play with are either in my guild or in my vent, or both. It seems like far too much overhead to belong to multiple guilds.
People make social decisions IRL, much like chosing multiple guilds, all the time. You have to decide how much effort, time, gchat communication, etc., you’re willing to commit to each guild you join, and you have to be honest with each group of people about your intentions within each guild. This is each individual’s responsiblity… and choice to join more than one guild.
Are you saying people can’t handle this? Why on earth not? And “handling it”, btw, includes declining multiple guild invitations if you find it’s too much effort to keep up.
What? There is no electronic social media that restricts my interaction with another group simply because I’m currently interacting with a different one. If I message friend A, I’m still able to receive messages from friend B, and similarly in a group chat fashion. Your analogy has failed.
I fail to understand the point of joining multiple guilds.
Kind of defeats the point imo.You must not have friends in different guilds.
I wasn’t making an analogy. I was advocating making simple choices. Just make a choice that you’re going to finish one conversation, in one guild, before moving on to another.
You could just block the troll and the issue would resolve itself!

Well looks like it will take them weeks to fix again
Nah. No need to be so pessimistic.
I agree this it’s pretty poor sportsmanship to train mobs on to a fellow player, but it certainly will help you to understand the concept of situational awareness! If you’ve always got an eye to what’s going on around you, you’ll not only improve your game play in general, but you’ll be able to short circuit these kinds of situations as a matter of course.
If people are going to buy gold, why would they do it any other way than purchasing gems from the Black Lion store and exchanging them? I don’t get it.
It really is a shame to see the gold sellers spamming chat, but honestly, I’ve gotten so used to seeing it in other games I report and block almost automatically.
Keep preaching the truth, supporters of the GW2 way, as the message must be getting through at least a little: this time it’s been called “lite”.
On the flip side, the pronunciations of “Quay” and “Trebuchet”, along with “Centaur” and “Minotaur” are constant sources of amusement for my guild and I on Mumble.
Here’s a few hints ANet:
Quay is pronounced key.
Trebuchet, treh-buh-shay.
Centaur, sen-tor.
Minotaur, my-no-tor.Your pronunciations:
Quay = Kway
Trebuchet = Treh-boo-chett
Centaur = Sen-tarr (YAAAARRRR!)
Minotaur = Minna-tarr (YAAAARRRR!)Dear lord, it’s tragically hilarious.
I think you got overly obsessed with the pirate theme with those last two.
What part of the world do you and your guild hail from? The latter set of pronunciations represent what I’ve always heard to be said, with the exception of trebuchet, which I’ve known to be pronounced as “treh-boo-shay”. I’m from the U.S., btw, specifically the midwest. (Your pronunciation of minotaur is amusing to me!)
You’re going to likely need to practice some patience with a response from the GMs. They’re dealing with a ton of customers suffering from issues that weren’t self-induced, as yours was. You’ve submitted the appropriate tickets, etc., so all that’s left to do is wait.
Bravo! Here’s to much future success as well!
Actually, that event has been buggy off and on. It’s probably just out for a needed overhaul.
Could be hearsay, but I was told the event starts with the attack of a dolyak caravan on the road by trolls. This occurs near a cave with a champion troll in it, and a champion troll that patrols near the road. It then escalates from there. I personally hung around the caravan on two occasions and witnessed the series of events that seemed to generate from it, though honestly, I don’t understand how the trolls were connected then to the next event, which was a bunch of big plant-like creatures spawning in the swamp.
I think these harder/longer to complete events need better rewards. Currently people ignore them unless they are in the way of the zerg. It’s common to see them spawned for very long periods of time, not because people can’t beat them, but because they aren’t worth the time to organise and beat them.
To be honest, nine times out of ten I find champion mobs much harder to beat than the big meta event bosses. With only a handful of people bothering to try it (and deal with the armour repairs) being downed and defeated is a lot more common for these encounters and the rewards aren’t worth the time, I’d like to kill more of them but players just don’t seem to want to do them.
Respectfully, this hasn’t been my experience at all. Every champion or even veteran I’ve seen or encountered has been taken down immediately, and only in a few cases did I have to wait a couple of minutes for someone else to show up. People seem enthusiastic about taking these mobs out. I do think after a time people will begin to be selective. Maybe you’re seeing the beginnings of that, but as I said, that has not been my experience.
My suspicion is that it may be triggered by certain numbers of players in the swamp actively killing portals and the beasts they spawn.
OP, I can certainly understand your wanting to be able to enjoy every possible conversation and info from NPCs. Look on the bright side: This is what “replay-ability” is all about. You will be able to level alts and see things you never saw the first time through.
I hope there are not real world equivalent events in GW2….
If they want to do Tyria ones fine, but I really hope they dont do xmas events or halloween or easter (an no, just changing the name is not good enough.)
You realize that it’s entirely conceivable that Tyrian culture would include harvest and/or religious celebrations that could easily involve pumpkins, holly and even bunnies?
If I looked at a big cave with many places to fall and die in real life….I’d better have a really good reason for doing it other than to have an achievement, otherwise, I’d be risking my neck for nothing. The question is logical. Does the reward at the end of a jumping puzzle warrant the risk and time involved? In the case of most jumping puzzles the answer is sadly, no. I think we should at least get a some coin and maybe some karma for repeats.
Ok, I’m always being accused of being too literal, so at the risk of having that thrown at me… you can’t compare a game with real life risks. Why, I’ve played games where if you died, you could lose everything you were carrying, and you don’t even have to worry about that here.
I am enjoying the jumping puzzles/vistas a lot… a surprise to even me, but I think if you MUST have a reward to value the experience, then maybe you should skip these “events”. Seems to me that’s shortchanging the fun, but… whatever floats your boat!
If it’s any help at all, I used transmutation stones on tier one human weapons without a problem.
