Huh, pretty sure I did not get one in the 30 bracket with my guardian.

IIRC, you are given three versions from which to choose at the end of the level 35ish personal story chapter, each with a different set of stats.

If I need to AFK for a couple of minutes, will I need to log out so I'm not mistaken for a bot?

in Players Helping Players

Debsylvania.7396

Last Saturday evening, I was playing my newly created thief in Queensdale, over by where the water pipes/bandit cave are. I’d just finished killing a few bandits on a cliff ledge and decided I needed some coffee. I “parked” my little thief against the cliff wall, where I thought she’d be safe for a few minutes and went to get my coffee.

When I came back, about 3 minutes later, there were a number of players killing the respawned bandits. The closest was maybe 10 or so yards from my little thief, who to my utter shock was blasting away with her pistols. I do use autoattack while playing, but I was truly gobsmacked to see that she’d somehow “engaged” on her own. I had no idea it was even possible.

Now I’m paranoid about parking my characters anywhere while I step away from keys for a couple of minutes, unless they’re in a city. I am now logging out to character selection, though I hate the idea of this if I’m taking a break within a group. If I log out then, I’m likely to be separated from my group when I return because of the overlow thingy.

Can I just toggle off autoattack to prevent my characters from playing without me?

Debsylvania.7396

I am enjoying GW2 immensely. There’s still a good deal of content I have not seen at all. My highest character turned 77 last night and she will likely hit 80 with a few zones still untouched.

I have not turned to crafting yet with any seriousness and that’s definitely something I want to do. I have been having fun trying out various professions and have three alts I’ve been playing fairly regularly with that in mind.

I will probably never again immerse myself in a game to the degree that I did a few years ago, i.e., logging in every day for several hours because I felt I had to in order to keep up. GW2 is a perfect fit in terms of pace.

Besides, I rarely even glance at map chat. I don’t get the fascination with it.. I’m focused on the game.

Regarding Bot Frustration

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Debsylvania.7396

Catbriar,

I can understand being curious as to when those “contacts” disappear, but I’m not sure putting them on your contact list is the best move … for yourself or for ANet. I say this because I saw a post from a GM at one point commenting that something they do is check the contact lists on “recovered” accounts to get some insight as to the networks the hackers have established in game. You may skew that effort, or even come under suspicion if your name is connected to them as a contact.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Debsylvania.7396

Debsylvania.7396

I wouldn’t think ANet would spend a great deal of time “worrying” about the nature of the competitive beast that is other MMO expansions launching. They’re busy working on this stuff:
http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/10ddhp/924_and_101_patch_compilation_and_other/

People that want to play GW2 as well as other games can do so without worrying about monthly fees being squandered. Let them go play that stuff and then come back after they’ve blown through that content.

In the meantime, those who are prone to blowing through content and then spending a lot of time on the forums grousing because they’re bored will be distracted by other momentary shinies and these boards will be less inundated with stuff we’ve all heard a hundred times over, already.

I died once and went the full distance on the second try, though I think it was more luck than having figured out any sort of timing.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Debsylvania.7396

In other games I’ve played, it’s usually a pretty bad idea to try to run from mobs. In GW2, however, you can almost always outrun the mobs, so it’s tempting to use that tactic. I always, always stop to clean things up, though, if my “parade” runs over another player.

Situational awareness is an important factor, too, that shouldn’t be forgotten. Keeping an eye out for incoming traffic and reacting quickly can, most times, save your bacon.

Another bot thread

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Debsylvania.7396

Debsylvania.7396

Basically as with all MMo’s, the OP is upset because botting happens in the first few weeks.

It takes a while to separate the botting code lines from the genuine players, and companies do not take action until they are sure they are taking out the right people.

Most VG companies have a zero appeal procedure once their system has busted you for 3rd party use, so they will need to ensure that those they take out are the bots and not the players. FFXI was a good example, wiping out a third of the population for using fishing rods. That was an embarrassing month for the SE devs (one of many).

I work in a similar industry myself and I can tell you that profiling and capturing bots is a long process, no matter how obvious it is ingame, and taking them all out at once far outshines taking one or two out at a time, as it cripples the companies, rather than showing them how to circumvent the detections.

Be patient, report them, and let the system do it’s job, but for heavens sake don’t throw a fit about it. The company is on your side with this one, not the botters. Don’t hurl fire at the company when they want rid of them just as much as you. Don’t make their job harder than it already is.

Thanks for this great answer! +1 to you!

Legendary Weapon's help

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Debsylvania.7396

Debsylvania.7396

I think the intention is that the character for whom the weapon is intended actually crafts the weapon. Not necessarily all the components, etc., but the legendaries are supposed to be a benefit of learning a craft.

Riddle me this. What is the point of implementing a great and in-depth crafting system like what we have, second only to that of EVE’s, simply to have everyone have to be a Weaponsmith anyway?

Why did they let players choose to be armorsmiths and tailors, only to have everyone become a 400 Weaponsmith?

It makes no sense. Unless they are to be only made by players who have 5000 hours sunk in the game grinding enough materials to afford the gold to have one, and level all of the crafting professions to 400 anyway.

Ok, I see what you’re saying… but… you can level two trades and have them active simultaneously. You can drop one or both of those trades for a nominal fee and not lose your progression in that trade and pick up a third and/or fourth one and level them as well, and so on. And quickly, it seems.

There are, no doubt, many players who will gather or buy mats to level every crafting trade to max. That’s what people do in these games, y’know.

WoW’s forums have been plagued for months with posts complaining about lack of new content. They are complaining today, rather bitterly, that the Theramore event is “lackluster”. These barrages of complaints happen routinely, about a year into every new expansion.

GW2’s progression has always been described by the developers as nontraditional. It’s not supposed to fit the model you are describing. You are comparing apples to pomegranates.

But what you are trying to say is that if all of the “hardcore players” ran off to Panda land next week, it would shut down GW2. And that’s far from the case. It’s actually incredibly arrogant. Akin to saying that if MLG quit hosting Halo or CoD tournaments that the games wouldn’t still be massively commercially successful.

I have well over 300 hours in GW so far. I wouldn’t consider that casual at all. I lead a fairly large guild and we handle the tougher content. I also competitively play fighting games and shooters. So I can say pretty confidently that something every hardcore, competitive community has in common: They whine too much and think they are more important than they are.

No, I’m not saying it would shut down GW2, but it will impact the playerbase and eventually will impact the success of expansions and gem sales, and its not arrogant because I’m not a powergamer anymore. I’m a very casual player now days. I’m level 60, and trucking along at my slow pace perfectly happy. But I am in a guild full of players who chew through content and I am scared they are going to quit, because that’s what always happens. It happened in Aion, WAR, & SWTOR. Each of those games my guild quit because of a lack of endgame.

All it would take to keep them around is some end game gear progression via raids and/or realm levels via WvW.

Additionally, I want to know that when I hit lvl 80 that I have a clear path from there to continue progressing (towards something meaningful) until Arenanet introduces the next expansion. Maybe that’s asking for too much, but I hear a lot of others asking for the same exact thing. Are we really the minority? I’m not so sure about that.

You’d think, after “chewing through” all of those formerly monthly subscription based MMOs, (I assume you played them then, as Aion and SWTOR have only recently gone free to play) you’d realize that NO game can meet the expectations that you have. You suggest “all it would take…” when those other games couldn’t meet those demands, either. What makes you think this or any game could keep up?

Don’t you think it’s unfair to foist your unreasonable expectations on a game that, from the beginning, said it was going to have no subscriptions and was going to be nontraditional in terms of endgame?
