True, this isn’t the first MMO to have things like stacking.

FFXI had it in certain places where it just made sense. When you did things like fight Fafhogg or Jorm or a couple of the other grand dragons there, you wanted to avoid getting breathed on, and you didn’t want people in the side or rear arc (for fear of making the boss oneshot everyone with a Spike Flail). So everyone stacked up on his front paws.

I disagree, Ropechef. I don’t believe pulling a monster from their starting point is considered stacking.

Let’s take CoE for example, the first few trash mobs. Common PUG stacking tactic is to pull the first three into the beginning room just around the corner and kill them just around the corner. However, what if 4 players were spread out in the room and all using ranged weapons while the 5th player grabbed a single mob and pulled it out of the hallway and into the room? They’ve pulled the mob out of its “arena”, but if all players maintain a range of 600+ away from each other, have they “stacked” the mob they are fighting?

Line of Sight is Line of Sight, and is not stacking. You can use LOS tactics and not stack, and you can stack and not use LOS tactics.

In my opinion, I view stacking as the overlapping of character bodies. This also tends to mean an overlapping of hit boxes as well. I actually would say for the game’s sake that limbs (swinging swords, kicking or movement of feet) can be safely ignored and just the core of the body considered for what is overlapping. This is simply because actions are scripted and not dynamically affected by their surroundings. (Hundred Blades looks the same whether you do it in an open field or next to a tree where your blade clips the tree.)

P.S. To those saying things like “The definition of stacking is when you stack things,” using the word in the definition doesn’t help at all. >_<

I like my solution better:

Please make LFG comments that say exactly what type of players you’d like in your group. Those comments that just say “P1”? Yeah, those are the parties where everyone gets angry at each other for dying “because that other guy was using the wrong gear set.”

Also, please read LFG comments before joining and abide by them. Please don’t be that person that joins a Zerk only party but is “secretly” wearing another armor type. You’re basically like that guy in wvw who is “secretly” underleveled that is hanging out in the zerg.

Kiting: Staying out of range of your opponent so that their attacks would automatically fail. This usually causes them to attempt to move into range to use their attacks while you simultaneously move out of range of it. While kiting can be considered dodging, not all dodging can be considered kiting.

Dodging: Placing yourself in a position where an opponents attack will miss you. Note that this doesn’t mean that you move out of range. The opponent may still be able to make follow up attacks on you and you might still be hit by said follow up attacks.

Kiting Example. Notice the use of range and terrain.

Dodging Example. Notice the head motion.

just keep practicing on your spacing, and bask in the awe of the pugs who faceplant while they shoot them selves to death in the face.

As a infantry vet thank god the real world isnt so black and white.

I actually had a bit of trouble trying to word this inoffensively.

Fortunately, no offense taken.

I am not so .. simple where spelling stopping in middle of combat to hover over my name impresses my respect or adding smiles to chat ingame will somehow make me more willing to assist you when you are downed. You are on my team and based on preconceived theory of each members effectiveness they will get will get my help.

I didn’t say do this during combat.

Additionally, not everyone has been in the military like you and has trained to be part of a proper working team.

Though it has got me thinking… I do yell medic or ammo only in bf4 (voice chat) perhaps that discourages my friends from wanting to give me said supplies because I dont ask for it by name.

Ill be honest I think this is some hippie shallow feelgood nonsense but Ill try to type out names more often if it pleases you people.
Didnt realise people cared that much.

It’s a subtle thing. Most people wouldn’t notice. I’m not saying hit people over the head with false happiness. If calling a person by their name is being a hippie, then so be it, I guess. o_o;

There is no “in the long run”, because when we pug, 99% chances I will NEVER see them again. Pretty sure almost nobody goes out of there way to remember account names either (since you can have the same Sam but with different numbers). If they’re not going to talk back even if you asked them a question, calling them by their character name probably isn’t going to make any significant difference in the same run either.

That depends on the scale of “short term” or “long run”. In my explanation, “Short term” was described right as you are typing. It seemed agreed upon that you saved time by just saying a person’s class instead of their name. e.g. “thief, are you gonna solo?” intead of “Tachii, are you gonna solo?”

Long run in my description was throughout a single dungeon run. I do agree that most pugs you won’t run into again. That wasn’t a concern. However, I think that people who do condition themselves to have a good attitude do tend to produce more positive reactions out of people they interact with.

Now will this work for every run? Of course not. But will you have a tendency to find things working better? I think so. It’s just my opinion, of course.

Also, about objectifying, we do this all the time in real life. When we don’t know the name of people or their name is too long, we call them by their profession. Like “hey doctor/nurse/teacher/professor, etc”. Don’t think of that as objectifying people, it’s just easier to do so. Just like in real life, if it’s too difficult to pronounce, we tend to not call them anything so we won’t offend them. The same can be applied here, we don’t want to mispell or horribly give them some short name (I’ve been called Oddy which reminds me of some childish or mentally compromised person).

We do know the person’s name, however… since you can see it as soon as they join your party. While it’s understandable that some people might dislike seeing their name shortened, in my mind I’d say that there are less people who would expect you to type out their full name than people who’d prefer you call them by their name than the class they’re playing.

I don’t think mispronunciation is a factor since you’re just speaking through text.

Regarding profession, there is a certain honor at being called doctor, professor, etc. Those titles are earned.

tl;dr, please don’t be offended just because we call you by your class.

It’s just a peeve of mine. I understand that some people don’t mean ill will by it. It just feels… like the person doesn’t care enough about their team to do something small like see what a person’s name is.

You stole the words right from my weary brain. Am I supposed to be impressed or flattered by someone that types a few silly faces while talking to me? :P <— see, now the sentence is much more polite!
:)

Oh, I agree that smilies aren’t supposed to be tossed onto statements to “hide” what you’re really saying with a statement. I’m not a proponent of putting a smilie behind every sentence you say to your party. However, using a smilie for what it was originally supposed to be for would be perfectly acceptable, in my mind. That is to help clarify your intentions because text can’t convey tonal meaning.

People who call their teammates by their profession instead of their names.

“Hey mesmer, can I get a portal?” or “Hey guardian, go pull those mobs.” or whatever.

I hate that. -_-#

Im sorry but profession is easier/faster than typing or trying to type the names unless youre char names are sam or jane.

Respectfully, I disagree, Don. It may be easier, but I think that your “speed gain” is only seen in the short term, and you potentially lose speed in the long run.

As mentioned above, you can still shorten people’s names to 3-5 characters – the same amount of characters to type mes or guard. So typing-wise you don’t save time. The only time lost would be in the process of memorizing people’s names, which can vary from person to person. At worst, you might have to mouseover a person’s portrait or glance down at your chat tab.

My thought is this:

When you call a person by their class instead of their name, you are objectifying them. You don’t generate respect from a person you objectify. It being a pet peeve of others here as well, if they’re like me, they’re probably less prone to helping a person if they’ve been objectified by them.

The subtle acts that you use to weave a team together become the grease that helps it work smoothly. Being sociable, calling people by their names – even if it’s shortened – dropping smilies in chat at the right spots/times, thanking people, all encourage people to help each other out. Does it work every time? Certainly not, but instances of people being more willing to help you out will increase.

The benefits are longterm. If someone respects you, they’re more likely to go out of their way to work with you and help you out. If you ask something reasonable of them, they’ll probably agree. “Hey Don, do you have EA set up on your war? would you be able to use it? Thanks

Also consider that if you get in a spot of trouble, people who respect you are more willing to help out you. If they don’t respect you, they’re more likely to watch you suffer instead. If someone you don’t respect gets downed at mossman, do you think to yourself, “I’d better help him rally,” or do you think, “Well maybe he’ll do something smart and attack a wolf to rally. Hope he doesn’t expect me to walk over there and actually res him.”

The time I think you save is in generating a team that works together to make the run better, rather than 5 individuals who are just hoping to “get through” the dungeon. It’s just touching on human psychology. That’s where I think you gain in the long term.

WvW. You will possibly want different armor sets for the different game modes.

As for trying to learn how to use berserkers, it may be a difficult road, but it’s really worth it. I approve of your willingness to learn. I personally started with like 3ish pieces of knights gear mixed in with my zerk, then slowly switched it out as I felt more comfortable.

Number of builds we have is actually pretty decent for each class, from what I can see. I think it’d be awesome if ranger and necro had more builds.

It is a challenge. I am excited to hear your findings, please let us know.

Edit: Do you guys also do optional events? There’s an optional event I’ve done once in Arah P4 where you have to collect some gears and stuff to kill off some giants. I’d say you should add that in as well if you do optional stuff. Like fighting Kholer.

Edit 2: As far as the person who left your group, they are most likely used to the norm of dungeon runs which is to skip through things. I wouldn’t hold it against them, nor would I say that they aren’t playing the game how it should be played.

I think you’re on the right track by having a friends list of people who – like you – don’t want to skip or stack. You should make sure to always pull from this pool of people who share your common interest. In this way, you minimize the chance of inviting someone who expects to be skipping trash mobs etc.

Ok. Sure meta builds. Lets all build 1 way and ignore the rest of the trait system. You’re all 100% right that arena net wanted this game to just have speed ran dungeons where we use 0 aspects of this game combat. Lets ignore all combat finishers that don’t give us might, let’s ignore a majority of the dungeon because it takes too much time. Let’s all run zerker meta builds and take all thought out of pve dungeon content. Let’s all run cookie cutter builds because it is meta. Meta for life! is this really what this game has come to? Supporting mindless and brainless dungeon running?

Nobody’s saying ignore the rest of the trait system, or other blast finishers or anything like that. What they ARE saying is: Know every aspect of your character and know when to which traits at the most appropriate time.

If you had to build a house, you’d use the most appropriate tool for each particular job, right? That only makes sense, yes? That is the Meta.

You’re looking at the situation like this:
Non-meta: Why can’t they make screwdrivers as good as hammers at driving nails into boards?
Meta: Why not just use a hammer…?
Non-meta: OMG why do you love hammers so much, there’s so many other tools out there, why do you just totally ignore them?

In reality the Meta is simply saying:
Meta: Need to drive a nail? Use a hammer. Need to cut some wood? Use a saw. Use the appropriate tool for the situation. Not our fault ANet keeps giving us nails to hammer.
