just confused as to why you think that a dual wielding character should be penalized for wielding 2 weapons. Or from the other side why should 2 handed weapon users be rewarded for only using 1 big weapon?
I’d read this last night and I considered making another point by point response, however, I think most salient points have already been made for both sides. So I’ll simply say that I think the essence of the discussion comes down to this statement above in quotes.
You perceive the price as a punishment, hence your word ‘penalize’.
I perceive things as Opportunity Cost. If something costs more than the effort to get it, I wouldn’t get it. If I can maximize my spending power somewhere, then I would do so wherever I can.
Much earlier in the thread, I’d asked the question, though nobody answered it, “If the price of weapons went to 500 tokens for 1h weapons and 1000 tokens for 2h weapons, wouldn’t this be fair? Would you be happy with it?”
I still do wonder in complete honesty, can people answer this question? What if the cost was 5,000/10,000? Etc. etc.
Fact is, our entire lives are based on comparing things and deciding what is fair and what isn’t based on that.
Comparison based strictly on what someone else receives is illogical. You need to consider things such as opportunity cost to yourself, and I’d argue that is more important that what someone else is getting.
Bill Gates owns 3 Porsches. Given this information, are you entitled to 3 Porsches as well because that would be fair?
You choose your phone plan, food, even place to live based on what “others” have/pay for. It’s how we utilise information.
Agreed that others affect the pricing of all the various different things we use. However, I base my choices on what I need. If something is worth it, I’ll get it, if it isn’t, I won’t.
And also how we take control of our satisfaction/happiness. Believing we live in a fair situation is a big part of it.
I think that belief is the core point of this. If you believe you are satisfied/happy, wouldn’t you be? That is completely under your control.
If you were sitting next to a co-worker, say at a bus stop, and some complete stranger walked up and handed him $100 and you got upset, are you really in control of your emotions?
In the end, I noticed that you never touched on some points.
1. Is 5 dungeon runs for a dagger an unreasonable amount of effort?
2. If they changed the pricing of weapons to be 2h weapons = 1000 tokens, 1h weapons = 500 tokens, wouldn’t you say this is fair by your definition?
Would you be happy paying 500 tokens?
But that is how “fair” is determined. By comparing your situation to that of others. If your situation is the only situation, you are likely to accept it. (snip)
Salient points! I like the thoughtfulness of this argument. I will respond with this:
I think a reasonable amount of equity is important, so long as you balance it with your other values.
To take one of your examples for now, the French peasantry and bourgeoisie rose up against the Nobility for several reasons, but the main factors that fomented resentment and rebellion was the price increase of basic necessities such as bread, leading to widespread starvation. The common frenchman was not afforded their basic human rights. The culprits of this was the Nobility, who selfishly attempted to protect themselves – a basic human reaction as well.
To counterpoint: Nobility still exists in many cultures today. Let’s take England. Why haven’t the common people of England torn down the walls of the Palace and taken Prince Harry out into the street to be hanged? They still live in a monarchy (constitutional monarchy) where just being born to the right person means you get to live in a palace. It’s because people in England are afforded their basic human rights and opportunities – the right to live, protection under a common law, etc.
I\ll even take it down a notch.
That’s probably for the best
When you go shopping, do you compare prices? Or do you just buy the first thing you see? Heck, would you buy GW2 from a retailer for $100 if you knew the official site sells it for $50? Or would you say the retailer is expensive and then buy from the site? How does that fit into your logic of not looking at others?
I agree that it is important to compare prices! So long as we’re talking about apples to apples and oranges to oranges.
If the exact same exotic dagger could be purchased from a vendor for 10s instead of 300 tokens from a different vendor, then it only makes sense to get it from the 10s vendor because the vast majority of us can agree that the amount of effort to acquire 300 tokens from any dungeon is more difficult than acquiring 10s.
I’ll go on to preempt the next point made about the above statement. If the 10s vendor popped into existence tomorrow, you’d certainly hear a lot of crying on the forums about it. However, at the time, the 300 tokens that those people spent to buy the dagger in the first place was worth it at that time. The existence of this new vendor doesn’t change the value decision those people made at that time.
I’ll throw one more example your way.
Let’s say GW2 costs $60. And let’s say Half Life 3 comes out for $90, but you find yourself enjoying HL3 twice as much as GW2. Should Anet reduce the price of GW2 to $45?
Anet chose the price point of $60 because they felt it was a reasonable amount of money for the game they were producing. People paid that price to play because they felt it was a reasonable amount to pay for a game like this. Some people choose to save their money and not play GW2 and get HL3. Are those people who are potentially having twice as much fun as you with their HL3 going to really upset you because they got more fun for their money?
@DigitalKirin.9714
Thats an interesting if completly irrelivent story.
The relevancy is this:
How much effort is one exotic dungeon dagger worth to your thief? How much time are you willing to put into getting him/her that one dagger?
The game devs have said, “This dagger is worth 5 path runs through a dungeon.”
Is this an unreasonable amount of time to put into making your thief better?
The argument that another weapon setup costs less is irrelevant to your thief. The reason is because regardless of how much or little a different weapon costs, it doesn’t affect how much effort you are being told you have to put into your thief to make him/her better.
Tying it all in:
The game devs (the farmer) said you need to run x amount of times (work from blank until evening) to receive your weapon (the $100).
If you had said “5 runs is too much work for a dagger – it’s not fair because there are other exotic daggers that can be had for less effort” (essentially saying $100 isn’t enough money for the work you did) then I feel that is a viable point and then the debate can move to the next stage.
However, people are saying “daggers cost too much because that other guy got his weapon setup for cheaper” (the worker complaining about the other workers who got $100 even though they started in the afternoon).
If the second group of workers never appeared, the first group of workers would have no reason to complain about payment. But the amount of work they did didn’t change. And the amount they got paid didn’t change.
If tomorrow we all woke up and they had ninja patched all dungeon 2h weapons to cost 1000 tokens, would you feel justified in telling me that 1h weapons should cost 500 tokens?
Off topic:
On a broader scale, why should someone else dictate your happiness/satisfaction? Shouldn’t you be in control of it?
edit: By the way, I do want to make expressly clear that I’m discussing this in an effort to provoke thoughtfulness, not anger. I enjoy debate, philosophy, etc. and I am having a good time talking about this. I hope you are too. And with that I bid you a good night.
(edited by DigitalKirin.9714)
I don’t mean to be antagonistic, Mechanix, and I’m sorry you feel that way. I’m honestly just looking for open debate about this.
If you feel that the cost of a sword or axe or focus is too expensive because the performance of said weapon isn’t met by the effort to acquire it, then I think it would be worthy to discuss it.
However, I think that saying “The price of this is too expensive because other things are cheaper,” isn’t actually a very strong argument.
If I may regale you with a bit of a tale. A parable if you will.
There was a farmer who needed farmhands, so in the morning he went to town and hired a bunch of people for $100 to work until evening. Then, needing more people, he went again in the afternoon with the same offer, $100 to work until evening and got a 2nd group of people.
In the evening, he paid $100 to each person whether they worked from morning until evening, or afternoon until evening. Some of the people who had been there from morning complained. They’d worked longer hours than the people who had been there only from the afternoon onwards.
However, the farmer explained, they accepted the job understanding that $100 was worth it to work from morning to evening. Why did it matter what the farmer paid the other workers?
no id rather the reward be fair to every player
But why is 300 not a fair price?
If 2h weapons were 600, everything would be fair, yes?
(edited by DigitalKirin.9714)
So in other words, you’d rather that the reward be easier to get. Why is 300 not a reasonable price for a weapon without having to compare it to another weapon?
Two 1h Weapons allow you 2 sigil slots, while one 2h weapon has space for only 1, giving you the potential for synergistic bonuses.
edit: I’m not saying I wouldn’t love to have cheaper exotic 1h weapons, but I feel like there should be a good reason that stands on its own merit as to why something’s price would have to be adjusted.
(edited by DigitalKirin.9714)
You can’t conjure powerful orbs of fire to literally burn your enemies alive, call upon minions of death and drain the life force out of them, or summon clones of yourself to confuse your foes in reality.
This is my everyday life.
Swinging swords in game allows me a relaxing escape from the dreary spell slinging I must do.
So you want 2h weapons to cost 600 tokens?
(Maybe the extra tokens go into the sigils that automagically come with weapons? Cause with two 1h weapons, you get a sigil for each hand.)
(edited by DigitalKirin.9714)
Yay! Bacon!
Put him together special. NPCs don’t have to follow the same rules as PCs.
Where as the support is standing around doing ranged.
I think you might have a misconception of what support is.
To me, support characters are ones who do at least one of the following, if not more:
-Grant Boons to multiple members
-remove conditions from multiple members
-CC mobs
-heal members
This means a Guardian, whose ranged attacks are quite a bit weaker than their melee, can be focused on support. This means Warriors who choose to melee, can Also be support.
Of course those warriors are pulling all the hate from mobs. If you pulled more dps you would be going down instead.
Hate is generated for a variety of things. Also, some bosses/monsters have different hate mechanics.
Hate is usually generated by (in no particular order, since people haven’t figured out the specifics yet):
-Toughness
-distance from the mob
-Wearing a Shield
-Dealing damage
Then wed be like you.
I’m a warrior. I melee. And I’m like them. A team player.
My point was I QUIT using Shake it off and went back to the signet because the cooldown took longer than the stun/CC spam. So I’f i’m going to get CC’d constantly anyway (mostly because dodge is broke) I might as well remove all OTHER conditions instead of just 1 at a time.
Why not use both Shake It Off and Signet of Stamina? If you’re in a group setting and debilitating effects are landing on you, chances are other group members are getting hit too. Wiping 1-2 conditions per person is very valuable.
What I do is use Shake It Off when I’m hit with conditions infrequently. Then if I get nailed with something really nasty, and I hit Shake It Off and I don’t hear it fire, I hit the Signet.
waypoint zerging the bosses continuously until you wear through their stupid amounts of HP 15 minutes later
With good team synergy you don’t have to waypoint zerg.
My thought is that five people focused on doing their own thing – for topic’s sake, let’s say five zerker/signet warriors – will have a harder time getting through a dungeon than five people who each bring something to share with the others. Like a guardian that shares protection, or an ele that spams buffs on attunement swap, or warriors that use shouts/banners.
This is not to say that 5 signets is valueless. I think it has its right place and time, I just think that in a group setting, the power of your group buffing abilities is more powerful (even with the cooldowns) than signets which are more powerful when in a solo situation.
If you transmute a damaged piece of armor… it no longer becomes damaged.
(I discovered this because I was leveling an alt and was keeping my Marks/Runes/Sigils though different upgrades)
Sometimes there are just things that aren’t ideal to solo. I would say ask in map chat for help. Or leave off and come back later to try to finish it.
Funny enough, if you tag the boss for a decent amount of damage then run away but stay in map and someone else ends up killing the boss later, you could actually end up earning that skill point.
So you don’t think that there is an insanely pigeonholed set of profitable items, and that crafting is a giant waste of time aside from levelling?
Did I say I didn’t believe there wasn’t?
You don’t think that the artificial demands of players pushing and flipping items is creating demand as opposed to you know, people trying to utilize crafting professions creating demand for materials?
If people are flipping items, they’re capitalizing on other people’s willingness to buy something. If something isn’t worth the price tag someone’s put on it, it means that it’s less likely to be sold at that price.
By all means “printing gold” is not going to fix the problem, that’s not what I was getting at, what I was getting at is that there’s those that play the “pvp market” and those that just don’t bother, and there’s not much alternative to flipping due to the farming and crafting together being near pointlessly dismal in their gold returns compared to basic materials which have a demand.
I am wondering if you believe my first post was in direct response to your post immediately above. My post was mostly a “general awareness” informational kind of post.
Money is only a part of the puzzle that is Economics. Money represents Buying Power. However, it needs to be balanced out with Product to buy, or else money is just meaningless.
In most economies, like the US economy for example, really smart economists measure stuff like GDP/real GDP (known as Gross Domestic Product), and try to get it to match GDI (Gross Domestic Income).
So what the heck does that mean?
Well for us, so long as Stuff is dropping (armor that people end up using, fine crafting materials, etc.) we’re generating Product.
And so long as gold is coming in from vendors, Dynamic Events, Heart quests, etc., we’re “printing money” and keeping money from becoming “too valuable”.
If the total rate of product created (which will take into account product that is destroyed) is matching the rate at which we’re generating currency (again, taking into account gold sinks) then inflation shouldn’t be happening.
So in short you’re saying buying power is too high, and the demand for a lot of commodities no existant?
I’m not saying that at all. I believe we can see product moving, meaning there’s a demand for it.
In short, I was saying We can’t consider “printing” more gold without also considering what we contribute in meaningful product. Only then can we say if inflation is happening or not.

Ebay, most likely…
If they make more Charr plushies, I’d be really happy. If they made baby quaggan plushies, I’d be estatic. If they made Dolyak Plushies, I’d be wondering why the aren’t taking my money right now.
Yes. Also, and since Daylight Saving Time is over, you should be reading 4pm PST. And also at the end of the month, your monthly will end at this time, too.
This certainly sounds like inflation, however, it could also be that there is incredibly higher demand that is outstripping the supply.
I agree with most of your ideas in your post but this I do not agree with. I have been closely watching several exotics lately and have observed their price go up each and every day. Whats more is that the amount available on the TP goes steadily up as well. It is pretty clear that many of these items are not selling. Not just talking about huge items like Lidless Eye and Jormags Needle but less desireables like Tsunami and various Destroyer Staffs for instance.
For mats and stuff with higher drop rates I think they are more in tune with the market as you described it but for exotics … and particularly weapons I think there is a huge greed factor everyone is trying to hope to exploit.
That is interesting, and I haven’t really looked into any of those items, so I trust your judgement on that. o_o)-b
(edited by DigitalKirin.9714)
Sadly, with rare and in demand items, the opportunities arise to create monopolies. That’s what I see when I see Dusk.
My thought is this, and maybe it’ll help you, maybe not. Because I really do wanna help people.
Make a list of your in game priorities (even if it’s just a mental list), then sort them by what you feel is most important to you down to what is least important to you.
e.g. (not prioritized) Fun, Money, Legendary Weapon.
Now I agree that they aren’t necessarily mutually exclusive, But let’s say you could only have one thing from your list. What would you keep? Could you be happy with it? Would I really want a legendary even if I had to give up all the good I’d ever earn and do things in the game I find unfun? Do I just want to have fun, despite never making a significant amount of money or ever earning that legendary weapon?
Okay, on a more practical application of this thought experiment:
Do what matches the most things in your list of priorities.
Personally, I find dungeons are fun! In the long run, I know if I put my mind to it, I could probably figure out how to play the TP, but I’d rather spend that time running dungeons. I’ve traded potential earning for more fun.
So consider this: if you are wanting to maximize your income, and farming isn’t doing it, what will make you more money? Instead of doing the same thing for little money and hoping the system will change so that you’ll suddenly be making more money from the same action, consider what other options you are willing to do.
If you like farming, can you increase your rotation of farmed monsters to avoid DR? Are you willing to do dungeons for an increase in revenue? (my income goes up the more dungeons I do compared to just farming mobs mindlessly). Are you willing to learn how to gamble on the TP or the Mystic Forge?
What are you willing to do and what are you willing to give up?
My last bit of advice:
“If you can’t be with the one you love, love the one you’re with.”
Recognize what you have for what it’s worth. Instead of wondering why it isn’t better, understand that it is what it is. If farming nets you 50s an hour, you should be saying either, “I’m happy earning 50s/hr because I’m doing what’s fun,” or “I need to farm smarter to increase my income,” or “I need to stop farming because there’s money to be made elsewhere.”. What we need to stop saying is, “why can’t troll farming get me more money?”
Printing more money never helped any economy.
A lot of people on different threads talk about prices inflating, which isn’t 100% accurate. Inflation occurs when the buying power of your money decreases. Now, when looking at the lvl 80 market (precursors, T6 mats, buyable exotics, etc.) you say, “Hey, everything across the board is getting more expensive, yet I’m not really making more gold!”
This certainly sounds like inflation, however, it could also be that there is incredibly higher demand that is outstripping the supply. Which given that the game has been out for 3 months and the vast majority of people have at least 1 level 80 if not 2-5, anything level 80 should be in high demand.
To get a better feel for if your gold is being devalued through inflation, you’d need to take a wide variety of samples of the market and see what trends they have. This would produce numbers more like a Consumer Price Index or a Producer Price Index.
Arenanet doesn’t give out enough gold rewards or provides a means to make money that counters the sellers who ARE legit.
First things first, never believe a gold seller is legit. It’ll be safer for everyone in the long run. o_o-b
Okay, so to my main point, then. Increasing the amount of gold rewards or providing more means to make gold gives Everybody – normal players, gold sellers, that one guy you really hate who bosses you around in dungeons – the same Opportunities across the board.
If the developers were to say make all DEs reward 1 gold instead of the handful of silver you earn, you might think you’d be stoked. “Sweet, Dusk should only take me a week to get!”
However, you’d check back in a week and you’d see that the price of Dusk will have risen to 40,000 gold. Additionally, Gold sellers will advertise prices more like 4 dollars per 1000 gold.
In the end, this idea would really just hurt people who gain most of their income through vendoring blues and greens 1-2 silver. Which I suspect is a surprisingly large group of people. You might as well burn them for warmth instead of using them to buy firewood.
Gold sellers win when the morale of a player is crushed by the sheer sight of the cost of their precursor.
I think this is an important point. Not for the reason you make it, though. In the end, Arenanet is combating gold sellers by attempting to cut of their supply while protecting the normal gamers – you and I – as much as they can.
What I take away from the point you made is that it is us, the players, who are responsible for our own attitude. Stop thinking of yourselves in a place where someone else has to make you happy, because it also puts you in a place where someone else dictates when you are sad.
Probably not going to happen. The conversion of +healing to actual health healed is pretty low ( only .125 hp healed per point of +healing power when using regeneration). I think this is to deter people from standing around in one spot as much just eating shots.
Ooh, I haven’t had a chance to check this out, but I want to. What is the Evolved Destroyer’s behavior now?
Copy it in from a different program.
There are still programs that can scan your copy buffer.
As always, have good anti-virus/firewall to protect your computer from things trying to gain access to your computer directly. However, if someone’s hacking your account, chances are they more likely obtained access through some other method, like exploiting a website that you have an account with, etc.
Remember to use different password for different accounts. If a game forum you visit gets exploited, they often try using the passwords obtained for your account in-game.

Maybe. The UAC is intended to prevent malware from gaining access to your system without your protection. Bypassing it may add the risk of infecting your PC. You adjust the settings on your computer at your own risk.
However, some rooting around on the ’net has brought this:
I use “C:\Tools\” myself.
Add this folder (or subfolders, if you’re going to go that route) to the % PATH% environment variable: “Start” -> “Computer”, right-click on “Properties”, go to “Advanced System Settings”, and “Environment Variables” is the fourth and last button.
Save the new % PATH%.
Either reboot, or restart Explorer. But if the app is going to be called from a script, you needn’t bother, since new instances of cmd.exe will take the new PATH.
Done.
I wouldn’t mind helping with CoE runs. Also, you can check out www.gw2lfg.com
A good MMO provides both options, as well as easy transition between the two.
Just curious, which MMOs are good which provide both options as described?
Have you considered doing dungeons? Also, do you have a guild with members you can obtain assistance from?
glass cannon for PvE solo’ing
Any reason why you’d want to build as a glass cannon for soloing?
Hello! I may recommend checking out some websites that advertise for Guilds. Look for active ones with traits that you feel you would get along well with. (Since you’ve only played a few hours since release, I’m guessing something pretty casual)
Regarding Crafting: Crafting is usually based on discovering recipes. There are some good guides you can check out.

The first dungeon you can get into is Ascalonian Catacombs at about lvl 30. >.> This one’s located in the Charr Starting Area, and you will want to have a full party of 5 people. Start with Story mode. Just follow the lead of the more experienced members. Oh, and I’d recommend avoiding speed runs as a newer player (speedrunners tend not to have patience for new players in my experience, which is unfortunate.)
To be fair, you had a whole month to do it and you left it to the last minute.
You have no right to complain.
A problem similar to this one is affecting Dailys. There needs to be a common reset time that is not different for each server and is well known, i.e., midnight of the last day of a month, or, for Dailys, at midnight of each day. Less problems, less headache.
There is one common reset time for every server though. 4 pm pacific time (whatever that is in GMT.) All servers reset at this one time.
Are you positive on that? Has it changed recently? Because up until I stopped logging in 2 weeks ago it reset at 7pm CST every day like clockwork. I would finish my dailies mere minutes before reset, as late as 6:55pm CST.
That would be 5pm pacific time.
Daylight Saving. Most states in the US use it, however the majority of the world does not.
If I am a 400 artificer, what’s the cheapest staff I could make that could be used to try this out for my Elementalist’s staff?
The least expensive rare staff would be based solely on the fluctuating market prices of the Fine Crafting Materials. That said, I think the Large Bones tend to be pretty inexpensive comparatively. You might also have decent luck with the Potent Venom Sacs.
Since they do fluctuate, you need to keep your eye open for which prices are lowest for you at a given time.
Yes. Every xp “level” you earn after 80 turns into a skill point.
Hmmm. I don’t think Fractals give that much XP for the time you spend. I think your best “burst” of xp comes from doing dungeons – if you have a good group and you’re able to do all paths. Consistent XP usually comes more from chaining DEs, I think.
I think Dungeons might be a better way of getting your SPs.
Hello all!
I’m looking to see what really entertaining Dynamic Event/Dynamic Event Chains people have come across in their time in Tyria. I’m hoping they are ones where you said to yourself “Wow, haha, I wasn’t expecting that!” or “Wow, that’s really epic!” or even “Wow, that was hilarious!”
They don’t have to be high level at all, just entertaining from a story standpoint.
It would be fantastic if you could mention the zone and general area. I’d love to check them out.

Q: “Quickest way to level now:(?”
A: Quickest way to level is to craft your levels. Hey, this question doesn’t mention anything about being good at your profession, or fun, or cost…
“crafting is to[sic] expensive”
I think running dungeons is a pretty fast way to get exp. Mix in your story missions.
Check your computer for keyloggers?
What will you be using this build for? PvE/Dungeons, PvP, WvW…?
That is the most important part of an MMO.
The most important part of a game is to enjoy yourself – hopefully in a good constructive way.
Not saying your post is wrong, nor am I making a statement about endgame or lack of endgame. However, I think a perception shift might be important for people to have.
well how am I suppose to make money? And yes I don’t have issues with grind sorta. I can put 10 hours in but after that I do begin to lose patience. I just want decent armor and apparently no one does CoF (the only set I enjoy the looks of)
Sell fine crafting components you’ve collected, sell the crafting materials you get from nodes (you farm for dailies, right?).
Masterwork armor (green) should only be 2-5 silver per piece, which is incredibly inexpensive. Superior Runes of the Pirate are 19-25 silver per piece.
And you can transmute or use a black lion salvage kit when you get your CoF armor if that’s what you wanna put your Magic find runes into if that’s what floats your boat.
As far as running CoF, if you want, you can throw me on your friend list and if you see me online, hit me up and i’ll see if I can help you with CoF.
Get a second set of armor instead.
Masterwork with 5 Superior Runes of the Pirate.
Work on getting Rare and maybe one day Exotic.
Given enough money, make your 6th rune a Superior Rune of the Traveler.
Use Transmutation stones to upgrade.
Use your non MF set for serious business, and MF set for farming for monies.
You lose stats that way.
Not seeing a problem here. It’s more than made up for with the intimidation factor of running screaming shirtless into a pack of enemies. o_o)-b It worked for the Berserkers.
My friend does this irregularly in WvW (usually it’s with his pants, not with his shirt). Hilarity ensues.
Ask as a point of courtesy to the person who takes you in to give everyone at the end of the run a chance to collect their loot. Or start the instance yourself, which I think might be much safer for you.
