The issue with this build is it moves slow and it kills slow – In a big team fight with a bunker guard and ele you can pretty much be ignored with all the cleansing and heals they can put out while they focus your squishy teammates

It also has almost no control or utility which other condition specs do – condi necro has plenty of fear and boon rip – what makes this build better than a condi necro/engi for example that justifies bringing it into a team

You’d be surprised. The reason that this build powerful is two thing: Firstly, the conditions applied are burst conditions. We get confusion on each shattered clone, so with 3-8 on the opponent usually. Hurts a lot when they use skills constantly. Then there’s torment, which makes kiters suffer. We can have 4 on them at the least, 6-12 if down well. In team fights, with people running around and using all skills, they don’t tend to notice these and even if they do, they don’t have the leisure to not move or not use skills. This creates a sort of condition burst, meaning they kill faster than other conditions.

The second thing is that we have the same amount of torment on each shatter. This means even if they cleanse constantly, if the mesmer is aggressive they can keep the condition pressure up. Clones and phants can also apply a good amount of conditions during the off time of the shatter. Basically, you’ll always have at least some conditions on your target[s] even if they cleanse.

While my build is slightly different than messiah’s, I don’t think Maim is any inferior to Lockdown. Shatter is good at what it’s meant to do, but Condi Shatter is not inferior in potential.

PvE is incapable of ever requiring skill so it’s pointless to change it.

Which team did you participate in the most recent dungeon tournaments?

Did any of those players have to play mindgames against the AI?

PvP is beating balanced players that have their own mind
PvE is beating mechanics more powerful than yourself

You can take your PvP team into Twilight Arbor’s Aether path and see how well you do.

I’m no dungeon runner, mind you, but respect other game modes.

Um… You should never, under any circumstance, go AFK.
The exception to this, however, might be if you’re pitifully out matched in a 4v5, and even then you should try and see if you can win before quitting.

My advice? Avoid the warrior, learn to stun break[you have one] and use stability[you have two], or avoid the initial stun. You’re LB Ranger, you should stay at a range where they can’t hit you from. If they come close, stealth/CC them and reposition. For god’s sake… do not go AFK and rage quit on your team. At least have the decency to leave the match and get dishonored if you were going to do that.

It’s strong, but it’s still only being explored. I’ve done good jobs in team fighting with Maim because of the constant condition pressure and the punishing nature of those conditions[Torment punishes for moving around the battle, confusing for using skills] and it works well to melt opponents. The strength of it is being able to constantly keep these conditions coming.
Still, it isn’t seen as good as power shatter yet because it’s still only an experimental build at this current time. Currently, if I were to say metas were 10/10, I’d say that Maim builds are at the level of sub-meta right now like Lockdown at 9/10. Like Lockdown, it has a lot of potential once we learn more about using it[think Warlord of Chaos-Level strength] which could indeed be as good or, in some cases, better than the current meta of power shatter.

Also, Jekkt, please don’t generalize a whole profession into a single job. That’s racist.

Hm, I prefer focus for lockdown, but it’s a matter of play style and opinion. Focus gives a little more certainty with interrupting something and being semi-on-demand, while Pistol can have better range, has a better Phantasm[ranged and fast attacked] and on-demand 2 second stun.

If you’re looking to keep a single target locked down for a while, then I think pistol is better with its chain-stunning if you use it with CS.

I would agree with most of the condition damage complaints, but swords should keep them. They’re terribad otherwise. Necros should lose them considering how OP their other stun-type abilities are.

Rangers: lol I don’t even…

Mesmer: make clones different very slightly from the original player.

Thief: don’t make them invulnerable when using skills. I play a thief in PvP and just spam 2-3-4 and I’m invulnerable half the time as my character does backflips in the air.

Clones have quite a few differences with the original player. Firstly, they don’t move unless chasing or shattering, and secondly they only use the auto attack. When you target a clone, they probably won’t have as many buffs as the player and won’t have things like signets or mantra charges.

How different do you want them, because anything too obvious will just make clones… not clones, y’know?

All you guys hating on meditation guardians need to realize something

They have very long CD on their gap closing teleport. (Judge’s intervention, the 1h sword teleport has a crappy range)
No snares.
Only one chill (if using a hammer & traited for it).
Have Limited condition removal
Have no real stuns/dazes/fears etc…
And their ranged attacks move pitifully slow (can be avoided mostly by strafing side to side)

So use your ranged weapon, toss some conditions on them & burn them down from a distance. Then if they get close throw some CC on them and gain some distance to repeat the process.

Basically… Hambow?

If you aren’t going to post meaningful comments with reasoning behind your statements, leave. I don’t care for your opinion and whether you think it’s a L2P issue unless you provide good reasoning to back it up.

It’s not a L2P issue. I admit when I simply need to get more skilled, such as when I first started playing Counter Strike. Yes, it’s a FPS, but it’s a PvP game with online interactions and combat. General PvP flaws is mainly what I’m talking about here. In CS, it was clear that some people are just really skilled at nailing headshots and moving tactically and what not. In this game, the people that succeed are not skilled, they just know how to abuse the most over-powered and broken mesmer/thief moves. I played a thief char in PvP and found it very easy to use.

I don’t like this mesmer/thief racism, so I’ll just say that I’m a mesmer, a decent one and I don’t “abuse” any overpowered moves. If you want to claim that mesmer and thief are OP, please give examples as to what specific builds and/or skills you’re talking about.

Elder Dragon Candidates

Another bit of fun theorizing; what beings can currently become Elder Dragons. Now, we know Glint could, it’s theorized her child/egg has the capability, and that Tequatl may be taking over for Zhaitan[or maybe it’s dead?]. But there are two other possible Elder Dragon candidates I’d like to name: Drakkar, for Jormag, and the Pale Tree, for Mordremoth. Drakkar is an obvious one, it is Jormag’s oldest minion ironically frozen under a lake[unsure if it is now, though]. The Pale Tree, though not necessarily a “dragon”, is definitely a great being with strong magical ties, means of creating minions, and has the “elements” of Plants and Mind[Being a tree and connecting sylvari through The Dream]. It might face competition from the Shadow of the Dragon, but it definitely seems like it has the capability. A miscellaneous third candidate for the Mordremoth replacement could be the second and yet undiscovered “Pale Tree” near Magus Falls.

Any thoughts on more candidates, or possibly theory for what it takes to become a candidate?

On the note of Furious Interruption, they need to buff this a bit. Maybe reduce the ICD to 5 seconds so you have, at most, a 60% uptime on it? Or just something more useful than 3 seconds of Quickness or more on demand than a 15 second ICD. Maybe make it group quickness[5 people within 360-600 radius]? About the mesmers just taking getting used to: if they’re balanced why are 90% of players I see mes/thief/necro? There’s the odd rebel engi/elementalist. And once in a blue moon I’ll see some poor soul using warrior (usually getting trolled by a mesmer).

As I said, you can’t judge how balanced something is based on how many you see at a particular time or times, as that’s more of coincidence and just randomness. The reason we can’t is because people play the classes they like despite how balanced it is. Case in point, I remember seeing a number of rangers before the patch, despite them not being as strong as many other metas. And if we were to balance like this, warriors would be in the top, ele second, just because of the raw population percentage they take up.

if they didnt over do ele/engie then why...

A strength of Lockdown is that it can remove someone from fighting on point, decapping it during the fight via pull/push. It can also fight 1 vs X in some situations, like on orb or on open points, by locking down all the opponents with well-timed AoE disables. Of course, it can’t win 1 vs X all the time, but “sometimes” is pretty good for any build and it stalls very well, allowing your team time to get over to your position to help.

Warriors vs

Dondagora.9645

I’m a mesmer, but allow me to give you my take on a warrior.

But firstly, do NOT go asking to buff that healing signet. It may have just been a single post in this entire thread, but that signet is really, really annoying to deal with. Sometimes it feels like I’m getting 0 net damage[probably am] just because I let off the pressure for a second.

Now, back on topic, I think of warriors as one of two things: easy-to-hard learning curve, and well-rounded. The first part is simply saying that the skill cap to become viably good with a warrior is less than that of other classes, allowing players to quickly pick up warriors and beat other classes of around the same skill level on the lower tier of PvP. The problem warriors have, though, is that while it’s easy to pick up and learn, it’s much harder to progress and master. It’s like being stuck at 70-80% efficiency from the start. For an elementalist, let’s say, the learning curve is higher and the ele will start at around 10% efficiency, but gradually rise up to 80-90% given time to learn the profession. Within the same amount of time, a warrior will have improved to 82% efficiency.

Now, warriors as a class are very well-rounded, putting it lightly. But they’re well rounded very strongly, meaning that they can do most of what they put their minds too, but aren’t particularly good at becoming specialists[correct me if I’m wrong]. In this way, they have nothing they’re weak to, but they don’t hard counter anything[some argue they hard counter everything].

Anyway, that’s how I view it, and might explain why you feel less powerful in certain PvP situations, though warriors are by no means weak. In fact, by my definition, warriors can never be “weak” just because of how they’re balanced to handle a good amount of everything[Direct damage, condition damage, cleansing, support, defense, etc.]. It’s this sort of superman-likeness that gains Warrior a lot of its hate.

I don’t mean to derail Chaos’s thread, but…

All I’ve every run is a shutdown CI-Mantra build. But apparently am not a worthy Mesmer, because when I look at these lockdown builds and the current “meta” Shatter builds. I just don’t see how anyone gets by without a condition cleanse?

In my experience, PvP is nothing but an “immobilize>dump AOE condition”, rinse – repeat. Especially against Mesmer. It almost seems like most other profession specifically search and destroy the Mesmer first because its such an easy kill with this strategy.

So how do you Masters live without any condition clears? Do you just portal away when immobilized? Or you are just kiting GODS and somehow never get caught?

I stay out of clustered team fights and begin my lockdown chain before they can get any significant amount of conditions on me. Simply put, focus on 1v1 situations, or focus on a single person in group fight, and just CC them to death.

I, at least, haven’t found conditions to be a huge problem.

The Old Great Races: Krait?

in Lore

Posted by: Dondagora.9645

Dondagora.9645

Actually no, due to how few races get access to that plot, it is the one personal storyline chapter I have not had the pleasure of experiencing. And a lot of dialogue in PS steps – especially talking to NPCs during and even more so after steps – are missing on the wiki.

What I’d like to see with the krait is that the DSD & champs do turn out to be their prophets, but because of this revelation there becomes a civil war amongst the krait race (well, more of one there is) creating three groups:

Toxic Krait, whom have already schismed away after their minds altered by Scarlet (Mordremoth influence, I suspect)
DSD-corrupted krait, including all of the Oratuss that’re pre-corrupted by the DSD, who end up becoming champions themselves (thus proclaiming themselves as prophets), with the most zealous and xenophobic krait amongst them
And rebellious krait, whom have a good-guy-bad-guy relation to the other races; when they’re in a pinch they’ll accept aid, but usually prefer to prove they’re still the top dog of the world and they don’t need no stinking Elder Dragon to flood the world for them, they’ll do it themselves with their own Prophets (aka denying the belief that the prophets are DSD champs)

Could create an interesting dynamic – do you assist the rebels at risk of them being enemies later on (almost undeniably), or see them as just another threat (still) and take them out now?

On the note of the Toxic Alliance, I have a random little theory: What if the Toxic Sylvari are immune to Mordremoth? Again, this is a random thought that popped into my head, but if Scarlet turns out to be a tragic villain or redeemable, it might be a fun idea to think of her alliances as anti-Mordremoth weapons: Toxic to create Sylvari immune to Mordremoth’s corruption, Molten to burn up his underground roots, Aetherblades too… I don’t know. But, it was mentioned how Scarlet was fighting Mordremoth’s corruption. Given her willpower to last longer than Aeryn and her intellect, this plan might not be beyond her.

Well, that’s completely off topic. Back onto point, it just seemed strange how it seems Tyria is surrounded by this number 6[6 Dragons, 6 Gods] and then there’s only 5 Great Races. But there’s this trend going in the Guild Wars universe, that the ocean seems to hide and obscure things. Abbadon was the forgotten god, DSD is still nameless and there’s little information on him, and the Largos just come out of nowhere now. Assuming the Largos are the current sixth Great Race, it might not be a stretch that the Krait with their obelisks were the old sixth Great Race along with the ogres, seers, forgotten, etc.

On the Types of Elder Dragon

in Lore

Posted by: Dondagora.9645

Dondagora.9645

I took a look at the ceiling/Eternal Alchemy and noticed a small, maybe purposeful, difference between Elder Dragons. For the sake of simplifying things, let’s call them Type A and Type B.

Type 1 Dragons are located on the left side of the Alchemy and seem to corrupt inanimate materials[Water/DSD, Corpses/Zhaitan, Earth/Primordus]. Zhaitan is a bit of an outlier in this category, as it uses inanimate yet organic material.

Type 2 Dragons are located on the right side of the Alchemy and seem to corrupt living beings[Branding/Kralky, Plants/Mordremoth, Icebrood/Jormag]. These also, because of their nature, tend to corrupt not only the body, but the mind of their victims.

Anyway, just thought this was an interesting way to figure why the Alchemy splits the orbs into two groups instead of forming them into an evenly spaced hexagon.

Actually, mobility is OP.

Some mesmers are mainly the most mobile in combat[because of teleports and stuff], though can be specially traited to be as mobile, or more, than thieves, but this requires both focus and a fully traited Blink. But this is s specific set up. Most other classes have an easier time gaining mobility, like using weapon or utility leaps or with swiftness or an auto +25% speed trait[such a trait which mesmers do not have].

@ Shockwave.1230
I totally agree with this
I think thieves can disengage from a fight without using stealth
out of 8 classes this one class can disengage from a fight at will
they can choose to die and choose not to die
if the thief chooses not to die I can never kill the thief
I can kill the dumb ones by keeping my health low and baiting them
but most of them just disengage and run
maybe the stealth mechanic is fine as it is
maybe mobility is the main problem

That may be, but it doesn’t change the fact that thieves were [I assume] purposefully made this way to be capable of disengaging at a moments notice. And, rather than a full-on “problem”[which people usually say when something kills them easily] I’d put it in as a simple annoyance.

If it has never appeared in a tournament before is it not viable? example Survival Ranger or Medi guard with bunker guard falling out of favor – until recently Necromancer was not viable but a few high level players have started to play it in tournaments

This is too subjective IMO

Well, this isn’t going into hot join, but Solo and Team Que builds. Anything that you find is often used, that you find usable yourself, that you maybe saw once but it was good. It’s supposed to be subjective, however the amount that a single opinion, maybe a outlier opinion, will affect this will be made less and less as more people give lists, so I’m not worried about the opinions of single individuals. I’ll specify that this is not talking about hot join.

Surely this is a bit too broad? Many players could run anything in SoloQ and still do ok.

I could whip out a Gadget Engi build but i wouldn’t call it viable because it is sub-optimal and would cause many losses vs players at the same level.

Maybe specify it as builds which you would run in TeamQ only?

Hm… well, like I said, there will be some outliers, but I don’t think a large portion of the engi population will be running this sub-optimal build you’ve named and call it viable in solo que. Thus, while keeping it open, this thread will dish out the viable builds from the sub-par that people just happen to run.

I’m also reluctant to neglect Solo Que because it is a deeper pond to fish in than Team Que, but more selective than Hot Join, making it the most optimal place to draw this survey from to collect a greater mass of data than a very select data from Team Quers who might only be thinking about the “top tier of PvP”, like the idea that power shatter is the only way to go for mesmers.

I find that this is needed right now for both us as players to see and compare how the diversity of our own profession is standing amongst all the other professions in terms of diversity[which I don’t think the difference is too large, now] and for ANet to help them analyze the current situation and perhaps reveal areas of a profession that could use a buff in order to increase the variability.

Instead of screwing around with core mechanics a better approach would be to add more audio and visuals cues. For example, with the recent change to Point Blank Shot we see that a skill can be balanced simply by adding an animation.

Here are some possible effects that could be added to stealth without diminishing its potential:

Damage floaters visible

Right now the only way to know you’re hitting an invisible target is with auto attack chains and on hit/crit sigils.

Footprints visible in snow

This would have limited application but it would look cool when you notice it.

I’m sure there are better ideas for effects that could be implemented but these are all I can think of for now.

I like these, but I could see a problem with the damage floaters since conditions on the thief might tick constantly and basically reveal them. If this was more of a direct damage thing, it wouldn’t be too bad.

I had no choice but to become a roamer
because whenever I log into WvW
there was no commander
you said thieves are good for roaming
does that mean I must make a thief just like everyone else??
when I was roaming in WvW
90% of the encounters were thieves
does that mean I must become a part of 90% just like everyone else??
NO I will not become a part of 90% I will not become a thief
I think ANET should look into this
and find out why 90% of roamers are thieves
and find out why thieves cant join zergs
maybe thieves need some buffs in some area
because most thieves do not want to fight my condi engineer
they just run away after exchanging few blows
I think stealth mechanic needs to change
because I can never killl a thief that decides to run
and my reason for this change is because
in WvW, Borderlands Bloodlust Finisher plays a huge part
if you stealth and run away 10 times you save 10 points
and it is same as saving a Tower

Nobody’s saying that, but some classes are more specialized for certain roles and tasks than others. They can all do it, but they do this differently and you sometimes have to compensate with more skill. Plus, if 90% of your encounters are thieves, learn the best ways to counter thieves, namely strong AoE, immobilization, CC, Reveal, yadda yadda. Or, you could learn to run away. Sometimes you just have to, for the sake of surviving or getting things done.

So, basically, you just have to learn to deal with thieves who, like mesmers, are more specialized to work solo. They’re not impossible to beat, but you’re fighting them on their home turf, you have to expect some challenge.

See, for some of this, it just nerfs stealth beyond the necessary. For instance, bleeding and burning are two of the main damaging conditions most classes have access to in one way or another. It is not immediately removed[though can be traited to], and thus conditions removing stealth is unnecessary because the conditions don’t leave the stealther unpunished.

Cleaving skills and AoE also still hits stealthed opponents. So, stealth isn’t a big deal if you use your intuition to predict or read the opponent(Example: “1…2…3… the thief should be trying to backstab me… now!”). This is possible by using logic, such as acknowledging that the thief or otherwise will likely want to use their stealth to its fullest content, meaning attacking only at the last second of their invis, that the thief will likely want to come in close to perform their spam or attack, etc. Basically, I think stealth is balanced but, like many visually confusing mechanics, it takes a little more mental learning to deal with.

The Old Great Races: Krait?

in Lore

Posted by: Dondagora.9645

Dondagora.9645

Here’s my idea: What if, unlike previously assumed, there were not five Great Races the last time the Elder Dragons cycled through, but six? This sixth race was not mentioned by the other races because, like the dragon it faced, it was off in the Deep doing its own fighting. This race, in which case, I would believe to be the Krait. There are two reasons I think this. Firstly is the little that is written or at least recovered about the Deep Sea Dragon, meaning that perhaps the Great Races did not have a great deal of knowledge of it. The second is that the Krait have objects of similar nature to the bloodstones[Obelisks] and at least had great magic users of sorts[Prophets]. At first, I thought that perhaps the obelisks were just bloodstone that Krait got when Abbadon was giving freebies to everyone, but the problem lies that they weren’t made from the same material. So, in this case, perhaps the Krait Prophets understood the DSD’s intent and sealed their magic into stone in the same way that the Seers did with bloodstone.

Now, going off nothing, I’m thinking the Prophets might have “foreseen” the next time the dragons came, or at least their defeat, and absconded into the Mists. In the case they wanted to come back to fight again, maybe they’ll show up again?

And, if the theory that the Krait were a 6th Great Race, perhaps the Largos are now their replacement?

Well, the main theory is the first part, you can think what you want of the part. Any thoughts about the 6th Great Race theory?

So, it finally happened.

I am by no means the strongest PVP player in the world, but today, while utilizing the trebuchet in Kyhlo, I started receiving threatening /tells from a thief who had tried to attack me. Calling me a variety of names and juvenile insults, he proceeded to start telling me to fight him in RL, that he was going to trace me, and finally blocked me after uttering, ‘good luck breathing next week brah’.

Really.

I spent the entire time staring at my screen in disbelief and amused laughter.

But it /actually happened/.

Thus, I thought I’d generate a thread. How often has this happened to you other PVPers, eh? XD

Maim The Disillusioned Impressions?

In this meta, MtD will be always inferior than power(tpvp). Power shatter has incredible synergy with thief. Spike dmg and utility is our role in the party, and for that power is better.

Um… While power might be, as you said, better with a thief, they aren’t meant to be the same thing. And, in order to break out of the meta in the first place, don’t be putting mesmer into a “box” saying we can only have a single purpose[s]. Maim is strong in a different way than power shatter, same as Lockdown is.

In my experience so far, Maim Builds against Power Shatter are about equal in value. This isn’t saying they have the same bursty damage, though Maim has the potential to do so, but more so that it’s balanced between them.

For Power Shatters, it may seem like you’re doing more damage, with the crits and fire/air sigils and whatnot. However, using a Maim build opens up your options a lot. For instance, where power shatter requires both power and precision to be strong and viable, condi shatter only needs that one stat to be damaging, which allows you to maybe focus a little out of the immediate damage at hand and go into survivability, maybe not be immediately stabbed to death by a passing thief or eaten up by conditions.

Using -only- Scepter/Torch and Staff

Hmm, using it in PvE won’t be that bad except for the torch. Don’t get me wrong, I’d rather use direct damage in PvE so I can kill faster, but it isn’t impossible. The problem with torch is that its most only good for killing players, not mobs or the like. Prestige is a stealth with burn, not bad but not as good as other non-phantasm off-hand skills of lesser cool down, like Magic Bullet. And the phantasm of torch, iMage, doesn’t do a lot of direct damage and the condition it applies is confusion, which is a bursting condition meant to punish spamming and hitting a lot of skills at once. In PvE, mobs and the like don’t spam, so confusion is even less effective than most other damaging conditions.

Thus, you can take scepter and staff which are actually hybrid power+condi weapons, but torch which is practically made for PvP is not exactly the ideal weapon in PvE.

So far, I’ve been beating a good amount of people[including thieves] in PvP with this.

Great condi-cleanse, not squishy, good stealth, steady barrage of shatters, and a usable amount of power.

I forget one of the traits, though…

It’s not bad, I actually like it a bit. Torment+Confusion combo is quite strong so long as you can get through your opponent’s condi cleanse. Had surprisingly good results with Lich Runes too.

Well, it is a strategy… not a sportsman-like strategy, but I respect all cheap ways of winning. I support trying to fix this, but players who can pull off these super annoying exploits… well, I hold nothing against them.

I used phantasm-health buffs and just squeezed a single round of attacks out of my phants before they died each time, and just kited around. Soloed it without attunements, but took 30 minutes or so.

Mordremoth usually dies last for a reason.

Very interesting theory. Hope it comes to fruit, and maybe we will have to balance this problem out by tackling two dragons at once in the last stretch to counter each other’s spheres.

[Spoilers][Speculations] The voice ...

Maybe a dwarf, or the “Great Dwarf”?

It would make sense since the dwarfs were the predecessors, and therefore passed on their duty to the Zephyrites by handing down the egg.

On the same note, if Odgen believes we know who the voice was, maybe it was Odgen himself?

Just an idea, but we could try a mesmer take-over of the Silverwastes and a guild event. It’s kinda like WvW, but we all don’t have to be in the same server and it is also more accepting of those who don’t necessarily PvP.

Just food for thought.
