I want to reskin my turrets with Asuran Megalaser skins.

I actually like the mini Asura turrets that look like diamonds. I also like the golems that look like aforementioned diamonds.

Those, too. I want those. Actually, I want the Lightning Turrets themselves.

Is anyone reconsidering my plan to eliminate the bookah threat now? Yes? Good. Mother always said my ideas were ahead of their time. True genius is never respected in its time.

Well, you can’t conquer the norns. They live in cold places. You are cold blooded reptiles. You’d be wiped out by just walking into their territory.
Same with the steppes around the citadel: no sweat system means your organs will melt.XD
Differently from you, Charrs at least equip their machines with WEAPONS.XD
Not like your golems.

Poppykitten. There is no problem my brilliant Asuran mind can’t overcome. Cold is easily countered by the proper application of tightly controlled Thermodynamic Stress Vectors with an Transaetheric Modulation Calibrator. I should be able to fabricate the prototype by dinner.

As an added bonus, my wondrous device can also operate in reverse, allowing it to apply inverse stresses to overtaxed thermal systems, proving it to be an adequate heatsink.

You silly bookah couldn’t possibly understand the complex underlying principles of Dynamics that govern such a magnificent creation. Just stand there in silent admiration and remained stunned into silence. It makes targeting you for eradication so much simpler.

Now then… Stand still while my Golem’s non-existent weapon systems lock on and obliterate your tiny uncomprehending mind…

Mortars… and by extension Ballista and Catapults… need to be ground targeted. I place my cursor on the target, hit fire, and the thing just shoots. Add whatever delay is appropriate, but this mini-game crap is annoying.

The mortar in question is the Engineer elite skill “mortar,” which indeed IS ground targetted, but does not have the range or power of ‘real’ siege weaponry.

Ah, since it’s bugged, I haven’t bothered to equip it in a very long time. I prefer Supply Drop. 3-4 turrets, 10 bandages, and a stun/interrupt. I love it more.

At lvl 80 and especially in any kind of pvp, turrets go down when a critter accidently walks by them. They have the resistance of a lvl1 turret with 7-12000 hp, but each sneeze takes 50% of them, noone really needs to target them actively, they just die in any super weak aoe instantly. Overcharge not working is just one thing, makes them just more useless as they are already. I would LOVE TO PLAY A TURRET BUILD, but right now its just not possible… gave them all a testride in the mist just now, all ranges + overcharge + trait tested…. 50% they stop doing anything when starting the overcharge, 50% of the time they stop doing anything even after that too, its just sad

Lol. That problem goes away when you attack again. None of the skills seem to hook or trigger off of autoattack. While you can run around and keep the autoattack going, if you trigger overcharge, you have to start the autoattack again to get the turrets to respond before the turrets will re-acquire targets and fire again. Annoying, wastes part of the overcharge, and needs to be fixed, but you can get them to respond again. Works for me. Test it and verify my results. It could help ANet fix the turret issue.

The last few here have forgotten that this is a “Rate the Name Above You” thread. I’ll pick up the slack.

Markus Titan: 4/10, this name is better suited to a human character. Markus feel less Norn than Human.

Abaddon Sunspear: 4/10, this name seems better suited to a Sylvari. It doesn’t feel Norn at all.

Vilijastyrk: 1/10. How does this come across as Norn? Sylvari, maybe. I’m having a hard time placing where this name would fit into the lore of any race.

My Norn Ranger is named Torgal Shadowpaw. Dark hair, well groomed beard, and white tattoos. He’s a devoted follower of Wolf. Wolf has blessed him with his form.

Typical. Only a bookah would question why anyone would wish to be an Asura. Who wouldn’t want to be a genius? Don’t bother answering. The answer is “no one”, obviously. That’s what’s known as a rhetorical question. You don’t answer them, only think on them for a time. I can understand why you would confused. Thinking probably isn’t something you’ve done before. Maybe you’d be happier attacking something, hmm? Well, I can certainly point out some Grawl or maybe an Inquest base. Yes, that would probably suit your… talents… better.

Leveling is simple. Go for Flamethrower and either turrets or elixers. Pick one set. I run with Flamethrower, Rocket Turret, Gun Turret and Healing Turret. Ground targeting for turrets. Toss em down in a variety of places so one AOE doesn’t destroy them all. Flamethrower is FFAoE. Hits everything in front of you. Excellent DPS.

Take the zones from 1-80 in order. Being a Map Completionist helped me level easy. You’re going to get downleveled when you hit lowbie zones, but the XP doesn’t stop, so its faster to level that way. Keep your gear at the right level, though. Under leveled gear sucks when it gets scaled down. Browse the Karma vendors frequently. You should have enough if you’re doing the events that pop so buy what you need. Cultural Gear is very nice when it’s at level.

My build is 0/30/30/0/10. It’s working out well for me in PvE. I don’t WvW much (at all) so that isn’t a consideration for me. Doing the zones as they come keeps the challenge fairly constant. Makes needing new gear less of a hassle, too. And the skillpoints are all simple to get done, so I have all the slot skills, and about 60+ points. Just need Anet to add more skills so I have something to spend my points on.

In the Beta I played a Norn Guardian, and he was a blast! My Guardian live is a Charr, as are my Engineer and Mesmer. I like Norn, but my first love have always been Charr (followed closely by Norn and Asura). I had enough playing humans in GW1. Only my Thief is Human. The armor is so AC, that I styled his as white and light grey as I could. Anyone counting will note that means the Necro is Sylvari. Something about a deadly plant was just appealing. According to Aesop, when the gods portioned out intelligence, they gave equal measure to all men. Those of smaller stature received more by proportion than those of larger frame. That is why larger men appear to be more slow witted and why the wisest are always smaller body.

Patience, a desire and willingness to run back from a bad jump, and Anet putting more respawn points closer to the start of JPs are all that is required to do these effectively. I suck at JPs myself, but I have done many of them, and some I just lost patience on when the run back is worse than restarting the puzzle. Really, if the puzzle can kill you with a fall, there needs to be a respawn point closer to the entrance, and reasonably free of enemies. JPs can be hard enough without having to fight your way back into them. No one has time for that kind of stupidity.

Tasks/hearts that go on for way too long

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Drakkon.4782

Drakkon.4782

If the heart proves challenging/annoying just skip it and move on

Simple

No, it’s not ‘simple’ when you are trying for 100% completion. And FYI, I have already completed the above hearts so this is not for my own benefit.

Would prefer constructive posts only, please.

Seems to me that (s)he provided constructive criticism, but it wasn’t what you wanted to hear. You probably want to have people who agree with you post, but constructive criticism isn’t always just from those who agree with one another.

If a heart is too hard or annoying to do at a given time, move on and come back to it later. The great thing about the game is that the auto-level adjust means that the events will be a challenge, though not just as great, at higher levels. You can get 100% completion, even if you had to move on and not get it all at once. Yes, the OCD among us would prefer to have it all done in one go, but getting a 100% isn’t hard.

For the record, I’m a compulsive completionist and explorer. I want to get 100% complete in all the zones. I want to see everything there is to see. I want to read all the text, see all the cinematics, hear all the conversations.

So I know what you mean when you say that things going on for too long or interrupting your otherwise calculated path and prolonging the events makes you upset. But the advise to just move on and come back later is both constructive and spot on. If you’re not going to get it done right now, then don’t worry about it right now. Only worry about things you have control over. Like getting upset about things taking too long.

Endgame... Reimagined? What?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Drakkon.4782

Drakkon.4782

So…

My takeaway from this thread is that GW2 endgame isn’t what everyone expects it to be… which is exactly what the devs just got done saying would be exactly the case. I’m confused that when they said the game wouldn’t play or feel like the current generation of MMOs, that as many people as are seem to be upset that the game isn’t like what they’ve been playing. If the endgame isn’t standing around waiting to get 10, 25, 40, 50 or 60 people in one place to do a three hour run through an instanced dungeon with the intent of only 3-5 of those people to get some uber-awesome drop that is part of a set that may require hundreds of runs to get then there is no endgame? If you blew through the content at release expecting there to be thousands of hours of grindy endgame, then the loss is yours. The game is exactly what ti is supposed to be, and it will continue to be exactly that.

It's expensive to play with low-level friends.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Drakkon.4782

Drakkon.4782

I think the primary issue here is that the cost of using the waypoints scales up with both distance and level. Why does it cost more to use them when you’re higher level? That makes no sense. I have no problem with the idea of paying more to teleport over greater distances. That encourages people to go back to town, use a major portal to go to the closest city and waypoint out from there, but if it costs a lowbie 9c to port to a nearby waypoint, why does is cost a higher level character 4s? That doesn’t make sense to me. I certainly hope that this system isn’t WAI.

[Slight Issue] Starting Zones are... imbalanced

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Drakkon.4782

Drakkon.4782

For the guy who said he doesn’t know what I mean by a Starter Zone, I’m referring to the level 1-15 zones right outside the racial cities. If you’re new to MMOs, which asking what a Starter Zone is would seem to indicate, there you go. Thus, the Sylvari Starter Zone would be the 1-15 zone directly outside the Grove. Hope that clears it up for you.

heh, I’m not a guy 1 and 2 I’ve played mmos for the last 6 years…I know what a starter zone is. However, I didn’t understand your problem clearly with it. It’s possible to level 1-15 in the Sylvari start area. You will find yourself in later parts of the game killing mobs that are 2-3 levels higher than you (Level 40 heart will have mobs that are up to 42). So to me that seems pretty normal and easily doable. You can easily do 5 levels above you if you are careful as well. That issue aside are you hitting the events and gathering? Are you sure you aren’t missing parts of the map? I know I missed the swamp first go around. If you are having issues I can understand your frustration sometimes events don’t spawn especially when you need them. I think some zones depend on them more than others such as the human area.

Well, sorry about the gender confusion. There are no girls on the internet and all that.

Anyway, perhaps I should explain the metrics involved in this study. I play a zone to 100% completion of all hearts, vistas, skill points, etc, as well as personal story quests that play out in the zone or in the capital city. As soon as they leave the zone, the Personal Story quests are done for that zone.

Thus, the Sylvari area only has enough content to get you to level 12-13, not 14-15 as the Norn, Charr and Asura zones do. So far the Human zone is shaping up to have enough content. I’m almost to level 10 there (I work a 40+ hr/wk professional job, so my play time is limited, thus why it is taking me so long to get through all this) and I’m only in the second part of the zone (the areas after the kidnapping section is done. I have yet to get to Beetleburg (or however it is spelled).

I have achieved 100% completion of the Charr, Norn, Asura, and Sylvari starting Zones, as well as Lion’s Arch. Not all on the same alt, mind you, but that’s what I’ll be doing next. By the time I get through all of the Starting Zones on an alt, I expect the characters to be about level 25.

Interesting that I had the total opposite experience. I loved the Sylvari zone, but I was doing story quests as I levelled, so never had an XP problem. When I tried Charr, though, oh gosh did I hate it.. could never find a heart to do my level and the zone is so huge that I never saw any events but that stupid “harpy attack” one that was always on. Definately my least favorite zone.

I think that people aren’t getting the point of this thread. I’m discussing a empirical study of the zones, based on taking a character from level 1 to wherever they end through their racially appropriate starting zones. This isn’t about what I liked or didn’t like. My opinion of the zones is based exclusively on playability and content viability. It isn’t about what I liked or didn’t like. I might have thrown some of that in there, and for that I apologize for misleading you all. It’s just a discussion about the way the zone levels at the same rate as the characters and whether or not the zone maintains a good pace.

My only problem with the Sylvari zone is that it does not, and that is because it has a haphazard, rushed feel to it. The leveling doesn’t keep pace with the characters, which is upsetting.

If crafting is meant to be part of the leveling experience to complete a zone, then the drops need to be adjusted to provide more mats for Leatherworkers and Tailors, as Cloth and Leather don’t drop often enough off mobs you need to kill to complete hearts.

Oh, and please note that while I did participate in some events, if one wasn’t running in my area, I didn’t wait around for it. I took the position of someone who knows nothing of the game past how to play the character. So if there wasn’t an event, I didn’t act like I knew there was supposed to be one.

Hope that explains things a little better.

[Slight Issue] Starting Zones are... imbalanced

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I totally disagree about the sylvari zone. My friends and I had done every zone except for caledon forest in the beta, and having played through at release it is by far my favourite zone in the game(metrica province is a close second). The general feeling of my mates was the same, and keep in mind this was with all the bugs/not being able to party going on at the time. I feel this may be a matter of personal preference. The norn zone I also haven’t had any problems with(though I pretty much gather all the things then craft all the things and explore all the things and….) the human zone I found has a problem at lower levels. I got out of the zone with normal levels, but I had to craft to bridge from around 5-7 as there seems to be a jump in level with the second portion of the zone.

I’m not talking about whether or not I liked it (I actually didn’t, but that is neither here nor there). No, I’m referring to the way the zone plays compared to other zones of the same level. The Charr and Norn Zone have great flow, thought he Norn Zone loses some content towards the high end.

The Sylvari Zone, however, misses at several points, and that’s a problem. I ran out of content for level 5 and had to go hit level 7 areas. I hit 8 and needed to jump up to level 10 content, and by the time I was at 10, I had to hit the level 13 areas. I was killing more red coded mobs than I was equal level, and that was a first for me in the game. Poorly planned, poorly executed, and, as someone else pointed out, thrown together and haphazard.

A side note about the Necro pets: They die far too fast. Let’s have a little survivability here. Am I supposed to be summoning them after each fight? They seem weak to me. In the underwater areas I was summoning them again mid-fight because they were being one-shot. What’s up, guys?

For the guy who said he doesn’t know what I mean by a Starter Zone, I’m referring to the level 1-15 zones right outside the racial cities. If you’re new to MMOs, which asking what a Starter Zone is would seem to indicate, there you go. Thus, the Sylvari Starter Zone would be the 1-15 zone directly outside the Grove. Ok, I’ve run 4 out of the 5 starting zones (I’m currently running through the Human zone, which is the last one, but I haven’t finished it, yet) and I’ve detected a problem.

The Charr Zone is very well balanced. There is a definite set of paths through the zone that can be completed free of the Personal Story without getting overpowered too badly in most locales. I liked it so much I did it with three different alts.

The Asura Zone is also very well balanced. It has a slightly more haphazard path through it and requires a lot of popping around on waypoints, but they’re “Asuran Waypoints” so that really seems to be appropriate. All in all, very well done (except the POI in the Inquest Base, which you can only get to via a portal on the other side of the zone which looks like a zone exit, and might be bypassed by those wanting to
finish the zone in one go without leaving…)

The Norn Zone has an issue. The last three hearts cannot be done without advancing your Personal Story for the much needed boost to XP and level that puts you up to 14 where the 15, 16, and 17 mobs don’t one-hit you. Very annoying that there is a SP, Vista and heart up in that area and the events were spawning like mold in a dank basement when I tried it. Everything I owned was damaged by the time I gated out. Boo hiss. The rest of the zone was awesome!

And then we get to the Sylvari Zone. This one was easily my least favorite, most bland, largest and most empty (content wise, and no, mobs aren’t content, they’re grind-tent). There’s a clear demarkation that might as well be a sign at Disneyworld that says “You must be at least this level to go down this path to the next section of content.” And it didn’t do that just once. No. It does it 4 times! Once at 5th level, once at 8th, 10, and 12th. Oh, and 12th level is all the higher you can get, because not only do the Sylvari quests not go to 14 in their native zone (they only go to 12, and 14 is in the next zone. Why?) unlike EVERY OTHER RACE THUS FAR, but there isn’t enough event/heart XP out there to get you to 13 without doing the Story quests, much less 14, which is what I noted about every other zone in this review. I could even make it to 15 with my Charr.

So what gives? I suppose it could be XP from crafting. My Charr have been fairly prolific crafters, with lots of nice shiny jewelry, deadly weapons, and powerful armor to use, but does it make that big a difference? If so, Cooking sucks. My Sylvari Necro, named after a deadly plant, of course, is also my only Chef, and wow am I not enjoying cooking as much I do Tailoring, Huntman, Armorsmithing and Weaponsmithing. The bonuses fromt eh consumables is nice, but you don’t get much for receipes and everything is discovery, which is hard at first because you don’t get much to work with as far as drops of food items, and harvesting only goes so far.

Yes, I know Jeweler also is exclusively Discovery only recipes, maybe more so, but … JEWELRY! Pretty pretties! I mean, what am I here? Aaron Sanchez, Anne Burrell or Guy Fieri? Still, I may have to get another alt to try out the Sylvari zone again for a fair shake.

So far I’m looking at the Human Zone as being much like the Norn Zone. I have yet to hit the high end of the zone, but the low zone is fairly amusing.

I’m not feeling it. Charr are hardcore industrial and metal (except goth metal, which I feel works better for the Nightmare Sylvari…). Anyway, this style just totally ruins any impression of it being about Charr. It just doesn’t work.

Most people like to be as effective as possible. The unfortunately side effects of a level-skill-gear based system is that there will always be the ‘best’ build incorporating the most appropriate skills and armour based on the play style you’re using.

See, that’s the point that destroys your argument for Theorycrafting. “Based on the play style you’re using,” by definition, says that there isn’t one best build out there. It also reinforces my point about finding your build by taking the traits and skills that are the most fun to play. That is exactly what I advocated when I said not to trust Theorycrafting. Figure out what makes your character fun to play and take those improvements.

As for the main topic, I prefer to take signets (I love passive bonuses), pets, summons, and anything that has a lot of buffs or debuffs, even if they’re individually small. It hasn’t been hard for me to find something that each of my alts can take, regardless of class (and I play 7 out of 8 of the classes). For Traits, I don’t look at the per point buffs so much as the 5/10-point bonus abilities/buffs to see which ones go in the direction that I want to take my character. I have yet to find a class that doesn’t have a 30/30/10 build I don’t like.

On my Ranger I have the passive signets, Summon Owl, Summon Wyrm, and Healing Spring. Haven’t gotten him to his Elite skill, yet, but as he’s a Norn, that’s going to be Wolf Form (he is a Wolfborn, after all). I prefer longbow for distance and rain of arrows, but if I need to go melee, its Sword and Torch.

On my Guardian, I prefer the passive signets, Summon Mystic Sword, single heal and mass debuff/aggro grab (Battle Roar, he’s a Charr). Weapons are either Greatsword or Staff or Scepter and Torch. If I’m feeling saucy and want to pull a huge group, I’ll switch Torch to Shield.

Engie is fun. All the Turrets and Grenade Belt. Thumper, Rifle and Healing. Weapons are either Dual Pistols or Rifle. Iron Legion bleeds Steel. It’s the best mix of “Ranged Do Not Touch” I have ever seen. During Beta my Engie was an Asura and I switched out one of the turrets for the Anti-Matter Generator. Ah, good times.

Those are my three mains so far. I have 4 more I’m toying around with. If I figure something out about them, I’ll let you know, OP.

- you can access your bank AND your crafting bank from any crafting station, which is nice…BUT…you HAVE to have crafting mats in your personal inventory in order to be able to craft with them

- crafting those malign, vital and mighty sigils and using the discovery panel to work them into weapons yields far better equipment than the standard swords and armor

- crafting a weapon with sigils in the discovery panel requires not the finished weapon, but the two components that make the weapon + the sigil

All good points that should be documented somewhere in-game. The first needs to be fixed. If you can access the bank slots from the station, why not just be able to craft them from there, too. I think that makes too much sense.

If its Briarthorn Den, that’s a spawn boss, and the spawn bosses have been twitchy lately. I had to wait almost a week until Maddox was willing to spawn in Ashford.

A few ideas:

1) All events are soloable, but not always with the armor at level. Try to run around and grind a few mobs until you get some levels and/or armor upgrades.
2) Craft some better gear. Crafting is extremely viable in GW2.
3) Travel to another starting zone and do a few of those events.
4) Remember that the random events aren’t part of the completion of a zone, only the basic hearts, and those are usually kill a few small mobs, pick up stuff, etc type things. Soloable.
5) Kite kite kite. There are more than enough damage avoidance skills and traits, if you do it right, to keep you alive. Pick the right weapons for the job. Fast attacks, burst damage, and shields. Don’t forget your healing skill. Use it.
6) Every class can solo. Engineers, Rangers and Necros solo best because of pets (Turrets and Spirits are pets, just not mobile ones). Guardians and Warriors have an armor advantage, but don’t get comfortable taking a lot of damage. It adds up quickly. Casters are all light armor, so think of your character as being wrapped in tissue paper and you’ll have a good idea of your damage mitigation ability. Move around a lot or let others take the pain. Thieves are in and out of combat a lot. Stick and move. Don’t stand around. Hit your vanish and evade as often as you can so that you’re not taking hits.
6) Join a guild. More opportunities to find people to play with. It is called GUILD wars for a reason.

Just a few thoughts.

I distrust all Theorycrafters. Cookie cutter builds, while they may be efficient or powerful, are also boring and pedantic. I prefer to play for fun. Theorycrafting takes the fun out of the game, which makes baby puppies sad.

Server transfers are free right now. No end date, so yes and no. You’re either drumming up drama or you need to be a bit more patient. Find another server and have your friends join you, or play on another server until you can transfer to their server.
