What's up with Logan and Jennah now?

I’m not a native speaker so I don’t know every English expression. Regardless, what it boils down to is that male = good/superior, female = bad/inferior, and that is NOT “just an expression” but an attitude that permeates our society, and the gaming industry, in a pretty big way.

I can see how that would be confusing to you. As the rest of the reference is being ignored, you’re missing out on some finer points of implication. I wasn’t implying that being a male was good and being a female was kittenuch moral judgments cannot be made and stand up to the light of scrutiny.

No, but invoking the term “nancy”, which is an older slang term for an effeminate man, usually a homosexual, I was invoking the duality of dominant/submissive relationship, and implying, as others have pointed out, rightly so that Jennah is the one who commands in this relationship, and that Logan, by “wearing the skirt”, is the petite little housewife, a traditionally submissive role reserved to women in mid-last century American culture. While the references were a little dated, I think that they should have come through more clearly, which makes all this bickering by people essentially saying I was wrong and then repeating what I said in a different way quite amusing to me.

tl;dr: All I did was question Logan’s masculinity in an archaic manner.

none have a right to claim it in any way.
my gess is that it will become something like LA or be a area where all races has part of the control as orr ismply is to importent to give away.

Wrong. By human law, if a relative of the last king of Orr is found, this person would have the right to restore the kingdom of Orr. Just like Wade Samuelsson has the right to restore the kingdom of Ascalon, he just chose to not do that, so he wouldn’t risk the treaty with the Charr.

Not exactly true, either. The example used is horrible because Ascalon isn’t a Human Kingdom. Ascalon was originally a Charr kingdom and the Charr took it back from the human interlopers who squatted in it for a few generations. Now, whether you agree with either their logic, leadership or tactics is immaterial, Ascalon is, once again, back in the paws of it’s rightful owners. Wade has no claim to it. He’s the last upstart lord in the long line of upstart lords who brought war and destruction to the land, and has wisely decided that fighting over it isn’t in anyone’s best interest.

Incidentally, Drakkon, could you please not equate a stereotypical female role (wearing a skirt) with inferiority and a stereotypical male role (wearing pants) with superiority? There are some rather painful implications for both men and women in there.

Dont worry about the pants thing, its just an expression.

I’m frankly surprised he had a problem with the skirt issue, instead of the Nancy issue. Priorities are weird…

Mirasight: compared to other bosses of his type hes got 3x the hp
Knight of Sterling: that would have been funnier if it’d been a cow
Aisha Shadowwalker: i see what you did there

Someone doesn’t know much about Ash Legion. Illusions, stealth, backstabbing, treachery in the name of the Legions, spying, assassinations, counter-intelligence. It’s all good. Ash Legion would welcome Mesmers with open paws. Blood is too brutal, and Iron is too rigid. Ash goes everywhere and gets into everything.

Why does quality assurance make so little by comparison?

QA is considered an entry-level, get-your-foot-in-the-door type of position.

This always makes me laugh. It’s true and false for a few reasons.

True: the video games industry is the only one that treats QA as an entry-level field. Manufacturing treats it as a HIGHLY skilled professional position, requiring years of experience. If you manufacture something and it’s bad, and QA doesn’t catch it, you could lose your contracts, or someone else could lose their life. Not so in video games. No one gets hurt unless the cartridge expl… right, we don’t use cartidges anymore.

False: QA is a “leads nowhere” position. You can’t get your foot in the door as QA, because you’re stuck there until they fire you or you get wise and realize that they’re never going to promote you to work on a real project. It’s a position that they farm out to college kids looking for “experience” in the field, which they won’t credit and can’t be reasonably placed on a resume.

Bleh. Deaf ears. Whatever.

[merged] Level 20 Scroll --> +20 Level Scroll?

Drakkon.4782

Change it to “grants 20 levels of experience”!

I have all my chr slots maxed with characters all around the lvl 50 range….with 3 80’s….so the scroll of experience is worthless to me

this way people who are trying a new class in a spare chr slot can get to 20 instantly or faithful players can get a 50 alt to 80 faster

Good idea, but I have a better one, that is also just as easy to program: “Grants the XP equivalent required to go from 1 to 20”. Now no one feels like they’re getting too much XP, leveling too fast, etc, and those with 80s can get bonus skillpoints from a few extra levelups (need those for making the high end stuff, I hear).

What does a lack of dragons mean for magic?

in Lore

Drakkon.4782

Asura invent magic capacitors problem solved.

A magical capacitor would require a source of magic to charge from. If magic was drained from the world, even if only in very low levels, it would take forever for a capacitor to gather enough magical charge to cast even a simple spell. Capacitors aren’t good for low energy environments.

To be effective, you would have to charge them in a high magic area, and use them to recharge batteries that could then be used in low magic areas to power spells and effects. Capacitors by themselves don’t solve the problem.

And their elitist attitudes that turn games toxic don’t bring any of that on them? Take some responsibility for your actions. You act like the hate comes from nowhere.

The hate usually comes from people raging over not getting things they feel entitled to. Look at the threads on this board…tons and tons of them with rabid, frothing at the mouth, raging attitudes about not getting an achievement or mini that they want. Not as replies to some “elitist” post, but posted all on their own because they’re angry.

So this is about entitlement now? That didn’t take long.

The attitudes of hardcores, who do content that “bads” can’t do is exactly, without translation or interpretation, the same as hipsters claiming to be into things that others don’t know about or liking things before they were popular.

It’s not the same thing at all. That’s just you finding another way to make an insult.

And… no support for the denial. Ok, moving on. Since you can’t support your statement, we’ll score this one to me.

It is an apt comparison, and one that they have brought completely on themselves with their attitudes and dismissive mannerisms.p

Again, look at this forum. There are an absolute ton of posts by “hardcores” trying to offer advice, posting videos, posting build and strategy suggestions, and many of them are still just met with anger from people. This picture you’re painting is – quite honestly – pure fiction.

Again, ratchet your rhetoric back down a couple notches.

Don’t be that guy. No one is fooled by it, and no one appreciates that guy who throws out sneaky little insults and then acts like he has no idea why his target took them the way they did.

Don’t be “that guy”? Asking for tempers to be kept in check and for inflammatory comments to be controlled makes me a bad person? How does that work? I think you’re reading far too much into my comments. I’m not insulting anyone here. Social commentary, maybe, but if you’re taking issue with my comments as being personally insulting to you, I think you might want to walk away from your computer for a few hours. You’re getting a little agitated. It isn’t healthy. We’re just talking here. I think we’re going to have to step away from this for a while. Please consider settling down.

It's Good That Gauntlet is Hard

in Queen's Jubilee

Posted by: Drakkon.4782

Drakkon.4782

Exactly. I’m not complaining that the Gauntlet is hard. Hard is good. There should be challenge in the game. But that should be part of the content design, not the way the game plays. I’m here to fight mobs and players, not the controls and camera. I hesitate to mention the jumping puzzles, because those will become less problematic if the game issues are dealt with. The camera is the hardest part of most jumping puzzles and that’s just sad, too.

Ever play a PS2 game called Vexx? The camera’s default position was ALWAYS on the opposite side of wherever you needed it to be to complete a climbing/jumping puzzle. And even when you could move it freely, it would snap back to the default position, or just off to the side of where it needed to be so that you’re perspective was skewed. Fighting the game isn’t fun, and it isn’t good game design.

We all see what we want to see. Is it so bad to see that poorly chosen words with many meanings could be interpreted this way? I think that it’s delightful.

That wasn’t “interpretation” it was grasping at straws pretty hardcore.

If you’re going to be rude, we’re not going to be able to keep up the discussion. Really, that wasn’t all that much of a stretch. I feel that I was actually pretty close to the intent of the message. After all, nerfing content is standard fare these days. Release it at it’s hard mode, then, after it’s been out a while, nerf it down to attract the people who didn’t do it because it was “too hard”. Where’s the stretch? Whare are those straws I was grasping for?

Now who’s reading new meaning into someone else’s words?

Calling a segment of players “hipsters” in a clearly insulting way and then asking “Don’t you just hate them?” seems pretty clear. =)

And their elitist attitudes that turn games toxic don’t bring any of that on them? Take some responsibility for your actions. You act like the hate comes from nowhere. If that was true, the mods would be more active, but since it has a source, they either have to remove every comment that provokes the response, and the responses (which they have done before, so I know they’re up to the challenge) , or you can ratchet back down the rhetoric and we can keep this civil.

The attitudes of hardcores, who do content that “bads” can’t do is exactly, without translation or interpretation, the same as hipsters claiming to be into things that others don’t know about or liking things before they were popular. It is an apt comparison, and one that they have brought completely on themselves with their attitudes and dismissive mannerisms. If they don’t want to fall into that way of being perceived, they shouldn’t act like that.

And no, no one likes hipsters. They’re snooty, obnoxious people with no socially redeeming qualities, so poking fun at them is fair game. After all, one has to self-identify as one to be offended. Again, ratchet your rhetoric back down a couple notches.

I sense a social contract being made here. A representative of ANet has stated, without mincing words of veiling their intentions, that regardless of circumstances (which is what “In any case” means) we are going to be able to complete the Gauntlet, which means they’re going to eventually dumb it down so that everyone can get the achievements.

That’s….really not what he said at all. Is the sense of entitlement so strong that people will intentionally misinterpret words now?

We all see what we want to see. Is it so bad to see that poorly chosen words with many meanings could be interpreted this way? I think that it’s delightful.

This will, of course, lead to the hipsters… I mean hardcores… demanding new achievements that state that they did it when it was still hard. Don’t you just hate hipsters?

Yeah, god forbid people enjoying being challenged and/or being directly or indirectly competitive in a game.

Now who’s reading new meaning into someone else’s words?

Drakkon.4782

Hard fights are fun, and I look forward to fights that make me do more than stand and deliver, which 95% of PvE lets me do. But when the game itself is the difficulty, with poor coding, bad mechanics, and kitten problems that shouldn’t still be in the game one year from release making the fights hard, and not the fight itself just being kitten its own, then there is a problem.

Out in the world, I’ve managed to solo a Champion or two, kill through a couple tough fights through kiting, so I’m no stranger to the mechanics of moving and fighting at the same time. I’m actually not bad at it. The time limit, too, doesn’t phase me. I don’t mind working under a deadline. That’s easy. What’s hard is when the camera works against me, forces my character to take up most of my screen 90% of the fight, and when I can get the camera free to look around, I get hit with a 1-hit down that I didn’t see coming. These aren’t things that should be part of a fight’s difficulty. Making the player fight the game itself isn’t fun, good game design, or something that should ever happen. It’s sloppy. Very, very sloppy.

What ever happened to “It will be out when it’s ready”? Shouldn’t that apply to the in-game updates, too? We don’t need them every two weeks if it means you’re not going to fix the problems that are part of the game itself. Optimize the game, fix the lag, work on the graphics issues, get the camera working better, and then commit to a 2 week release schedule for new content. Yes, we’ll still find things to complain about, but it will be harder to criticize the content if the game isn’t the main problem with it.

Did ANET think about Upscaled chars?

Queen’s Gauntlet will return, possibly as part of the activity rotation or even other events. In any case, you’ll be able to complete those achievements at a later date.

This will, of course, lead to the hipsters… I mean hardcores… demanding new achievements that state that they did it when it was still hard. Don’t you just hate hipsters?

I have a Charr Mesmer. She’s awesome. Mesmer in GW1 was meh. Mesmer in GW2 is AWESOME.

I also have an Engi and a Guardian. Love both of them, but the Guardian is much less squishy and does better DPS. They reflect each of the three Legions and three back stories, so I get to do them all. Yes, the Mesmer is Ash Legion. That should have gone without saying, and yet, I keep being asked. Not here, but other places. They all work, and they’re all a good fit for the Charr. Play what you like.

Ballon tower achievements - finished

Submit a ticket and move on to new zones. There are… 23 zones with 2 balloons per zone, so 46 balloons total. You need 30 for the Achievement. You can safely ignore 8 whole zones and still get the achievement. If it’s failing out on you, guest to another server and try again.

Hate the Gauntlet, but if you want fun and togetherness, just runn the Jubilee events in the Pavilion. Zerging through Legendary fights that last about ten minutes each. So much fun. Reviving downed companions, two or more chests, extra kills, lots of skillpoints for level 80 levelups. I can’t remember a more entertaining way to spend my time online. Just wish my lowbie upleveled alts could actually participate in the fights without getting slaughtered immediately. Their gear just doesn’t translate well to level 80.

What does a lack of dragons mean for magic?

in Lore

Drakkon.4782

channeling magic is not consuming it.
it’s the difference between firing a squirt gun and drinking the water inside it.

You would probably be dismayed to learn that there isn’t a difference there, either. Drinking the water doesn’t change it. What you take in is excreted back out, pretty much in the same form it was in when you drank it. Water is a nutritional catalyst, which, like any catalyst, doesn’t change when used and is not used up itself.

Yes, that’s why you can process urine to reclaim the water in it, and it’s safe, sterile, and healthy to drink.

That was probably TMI for most of you, but meh.

A better analogy for the way dragons seem to work is a capacitor operating in reverse. When they sleep, they discharge back into the system, releasing the energy they gathered while actively charging, and when they get too low (ie, when there is more magic in the world than in them) they wake up and begin feeding (charging up). A normal capacitor charges up while it’s resting, only to discharge when activated.

Channeling magic is just creating a new circuit between the source of magic and the magical ground. I was going to go on about that, but then I realized I was getting deep into some theories that the game just can’t get into, so I decided it best to just stop.

As you are going to go at length to misrepresent the facts, I don’t think we can discuss more, Leo. You’re saying that the palm of your hand is actually your fingers. I refuse to accept your definition of toes because you are both anatomically and logically faulty, wrong, ignorant and just not right. Since we can’t even agree on the basic definitions of what we’re talking about, we’ve left the building as far as rational conversation is concerned. Have fun with your self-reinforcing delusions and poor grasp of physiology. I’m completely done with this.

Why are you thinking about race anatomy when I am thinking about different armor sets for the female charrs and asuras? What does all this other info has to do with them having different armor sets than the males?

Because the two are linked, inextricably. Why can’t you see that? What’s wrong with you?

All I am asking and supporting is that they can have armor sets meaning different patterns on their armor than the males. That way it won’t be identical so I do not see anything wrong with that suggestion. Why does lore have to be involved in this? If a charr wants a different design on their armor to look different from the rest. Then they will go to a blacksmith that will customize it for them and probably tip them off too for doing a great job.

There’s no point to your suggestion, no basis to make such a decision, and no possible advantage to making the the change.

I guess you can say I am seeing this idea from designer’s perspective?

No, you’re no designer. You’re just a fanboy who had a different idea and are trying to get people to support it. If you were looking at this from a designer perspective, you would take every single player who picks a Charr to play as a success and wouldn’t be looking for horrible ways to fold the race back into the template that destroys people’s desire to play a different race by making it not different. To put it succinctly, the Charr are different because they’re undifferentiated, and that’s a good thing. Wanting them to be something different would make them the same as every other race, and that’s bad. They’re square pegs, not round ones. They won’t fit in your round hole.

Wouldn’t it better just to have wider range of not kittenty looking armor with clipping issues available to both genders rather than focusing on differentiating them when there is no physical or lore reason and the base we already have is bad?

Not to mention if they do that no doubt I’d end up wanting the opposites gender armor cause it looks better.

I can get behind this easily. Without the raging, of course. They should spend more time fixing the clipping issues, particularly with the tails. They have no need to spend any time or effort on making sexually differentiated armors. For me, not even after they fix the armors so they don’t look so bad.

Drakkon, there are quite a few outfits (both armor and town clothing) worn by certain NPCs that are sadly not available to us.

pout

Say it isn’t so. I saw another NPC with it the other day while I was making my rounds of the hot air balloons. The Charr bringing his cows to Meatoberfest has the same outfit.
