Hey, just joined the crew. I was wondering which classes are most in demand for parties (pvp and/or pve wise). I’ve been thinking of playing an Elementalist, Mesmer, or Thief, but mainly just want a char that can easily roll with a party and have fun be it casual or hardcore stuff.
Thanks.
All classes pretty much are 100% useful for any content in game.
So really it’s all about playstyle preferences!
Try all classes and see which one fits your playstyle!
I would also be happy to help you out in game too!

Ayrilana is correct.
Unlocking Traits, Skills, and getting new stat combination is part of PvE progression since making a build consist of these 3 elements.
I think WvW should be like PvP though… Have everything unlocked besides the WvW Specific Skills. WvW Ranks and specific skills should be the only real progression for WvW but unfortunately it’s not. =(
How is Sword/shield Warrior crippled?
———————————————————————————————————————————————because you do 12 points of damage and your shield skill runs for 1 second with a cool down of 3 hours not to mention that your shield push isn’t affecting any important opponents???
What are you talking about?
Warrior Sword/Shield is very effective. You can block attacks, and daze your target in combat with Shield which is vital and the Sword helps you cripple your target and do bleeding damage and jump at them when they flee. It does decent damage too.
Guardian Sword/Shield is also effective. With the Shield You can give yourself protection and reduce damage you take, Knock back enemies who are getting to dangerously close to you, Absorb Projectiles and heal yourself while the sword does Damage, Blinds enemy, and reflect projectiles as you deal damage to keep yourself safe from ranged.
Your problem is clearly a “Learn-to-play” issue.
My previous MMO was Final Fantasy 11….
I hate Square Enix with a passion.
FF11 has a crappy turn based combat system.
Grind, Grind, Grind.
10Hour or 72hour Boss Respawn Timers.
It’s just boring and crap. The game is not skill based at all. It’s Gear based! Gear is everything in that game.
Only reason I played FF11 was for the Story Missions which had epic Cut-scenes and my friends. Actually, I didnt play other MMOs because FF11 was the only real game with cut-scenes and epic adventures while other MMOs where just about questing with texts reading.
I told my best friend RJ who died this year on Feb 15th that if an MMORPG with epic Cut-scenes with voice acting, Action based combat which requires skills not gear to be good, No Grinding, Exploring is everything, good graphics and art, and I can play however I want, comes out to the market… I’m quitting FFXI in a heart-beat for THAT GAME… I told my friend this of course 7 years ago thinking it would never happen…
Till I saw GW2 on youtube by Alexrediculous… That’s when my life changed. I stalked GW2 since then and got into alpha and beta and I was sold… Good by Vanad’ell and Hello Tyria!!!
Havn’t looked back since then. GW2 happens to be the game I was waiting for. =)
ArenaNet cares for their players and Square Enix only cares for their bottom line.
Great guide, DreamyAbaddon! I learned a lot from it. I got three questions for you, though. Are you planning on updating it? Are you planning on making a guide on combos? Isn’t there really 4 steps in making your build, choosing your profession being the first?
Hello Uden!
I have thought about updating the guide by including Combo Fields & Finishers but then realized that the Combat System 101 guide is suppose to cover all the basics which already has a lot of information. I really didn’t want to overwhelm my target audience with that much information so I decided to leave the Combo Fields and Finishers out. Because I wanted new players to be aware of Combos, I decided to mention this guide doesn’t have lessons on Combos and finishers in hopes they would continue their research on wiki to learn more.
Choosing a Profession is not considered the first step in making a build because a build has nothing to do with your profession. Every class has Damage/Control/Support skills to manage. Every class has their own unique ways of managing these types of skills.
Your playstyle is based on your skill choices and how you deal with them.
A build consists of 3 elements: Skills/Traits/Stats
Think of this as a trading card game.
- A build is your deck – Which includes Skills/Traits/Stats.
- Skills are the cards you play with. This is your Playstyle
- Traits change how you play with your cards. Enhances your playstyle.
- Stats give you the balance you need to play with your cards. Which supplement your playstyle.
So when it comes down to choosing a class, you’re choosing it based on your playstyle preferences. The way a Warrior handles Damage/Control/Support skills will be different than how a Mesmer deals with those types of skills. This is why choosing a class is not part of the steps when making a build. Remember there are no Roles in GW2. Just the classes. Your builds, skills, and strategy will determine how good you are as a player.
I hope this helped answer your questions! ^-^

Is there a dice command where you can roll a random number in chat?
How much gold is 800 Gems?
How much gold is 8,000 Gems?
Thanks!
GW2’s Combat is skill based, and when you get more than 5 people dungeon it becomes a zerg fest which ruins the fun of it.
when you are a very uncreative designer/dev, this is correct.
and at the moment the combat system is indeed skill based. and this skill is the 1 on your keyboard.tbh it wouldnt be that hard to make challenging 20 man instances that dont end up being a zerg fest. it comes down to how you design the content.
Raids dont belong to GW2….
this sounds more like “i dont want raids”.
But probably they don’t want to make open world afk 1111, and instead they want to make (some of) the open world encounters as complex as those of typical mmo raids.
which is impossible. open world content is open world content because everyone can participate, everyone can succeed no matter how good you play.
you cant make open world content as complex as good raid content.
the level of complexity and difficulty you need to deliver good and organized guilds a fun and challenging experience with high replayablity is something you cant put into the open world.and there is the wurm, and there was the marionette.
i dont understand how both events are challenging. just look at the wurm. the wurm is based on 1 + 1 = 2 or run from A to B. its not complex at all. the only challenge there is the chat between the commanders to tell each other when they are ready.
the marionette could be reworked into something cool. but its probably the only encounter that would be worth it.
In other MMOs it makes sense to have Raids because the combat is Gear based not skill based. DPS role just does damage. Tank Role just holds agro and Healer roles just heal and buff.
Combat based on Roles require no skills.
Wana be a good DPS Role? Get better DPS gear.
Wana be a Good Tank? Get better Tank Gear.
Wana be a good Healer? Get better Mana or Healing gear!
In a 20man raid you mindlessness play your role and it becomes complex because you have to coordinate your roles with others and each raid takes forever to complete.
GW2’s Skill based combat requires all players to take Control, Support themselves and contribute dealing damage to kill enemies while moving and dodging from incoming attacks. With a Skill based combat system that GW2 is… Having raids encourages zergs which breaks skill based concept entirely.
By having more people participating, it becomes easier and therefore more mistakes and less skillful players can succeed in such events. With less players, you can only make less mistakes before failure. Raids just dont work with how the combat in GW2 is designed in mind. Everyone can suddenly just spam Control skills or Damage skills or Support skills… This is why ArenaNet created champs to be immuned to certain control effects so the Champion doesnt get abused with Knockback skills being spammed by players and such. It’s stupid.
Challenging content should require 3 player dungeon max… So many crazy possibilities can be done with 3-5 player max dungeons. So much pressure could be made for hardcore players with skills to take down! No Bosses should be immune to control effects since 3-5 players isn’t a lot to abuse those skill effects.
Yes I dont want raids… Because it just doesnt work for this game.
I want challenge…
The more players who help out the easier the content is since you can make more mistakes.
The less players the more challenging it is because you can make less mistakes. That’s why 5 man group dungeons is more challenging.
GW2’s Combat is skill based, and when you get more than 5 people dungeon it becomes a zerg fest which ruins the fun of it.
Raids dont belong to GW2….
I’ll keep myself updated on this post since it seems interesting.
Got a good feeling dev will reply on this =D
According to Colin Johanson, Guild Wars 2 Game Director, Super Adventure Box will be back in the future. We don’t have a timeframe for the return of the SAB, but we will be bringing back this popular content.
I know you would like more details, more info, a date, etc., but that’s not available right now. I hope the above comment reassures you, though, because at the core, the important answer is that yes, SAB will be back in the future.
I LOVE YOU AND COLIN JOHANSON!!!!
THANK YOU!!!!

Yeah I just think it’s a good idea they turn it on during the free-trial period.
This will attract more new players that wants to buy this game due to more content. (Fun Content) specifically like SAB
Mike Obrien makes the final calls.
I hope he makes the choice bringing back the content we all love and adore!
So New players can experience it too!
I miss this content. Good memories!
Make it permanent so we can enjoy it at our own time!

There are no (Soft-Trinity) in GW2.
Check out my Guide which’s also supported by ArenaNet and it’s a [Sticky] under players-helping-players sub-forum:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/GW2-Combat-system-101-Guide/first
Damage/Control/Support are combat mechanics.
Each mechanic is unique and all classes need to learn how to utilize them.
Good luck!
Honestly they are useful for anything including PvE if you know how to use it.
Yeah, that’s what I’m asking. How can I use teleportation to good effect as either a combat or utility skill? Got a more concrete example than “anything”?
Passing over ground AoEs without touching them, creating a gap from melee mobs or players, bridging a gap to mobs or players if you’re using melee skills, creating a gap from ranged mobs or players, so that you can reach a place to line-of-sight them.
I think the reason Dreamy says “anything” is because the possibilities are highly situational (and thus, are kind of hard to tabulate). You aren’t necessarily going to find it in a regular rotation of abilities, but you can find some neat uses for it.
This is exactly what I mean!
Thank you!

What my post doesn’t count? lol
Scroll up.
Yeah Vayne has some great suggestion on this.
However the best way to learn is through understanding basic combat mechanics and making builds.
Here’s my combat guide I recommend you check this out with all videos to learn how skills work in it’s best used. While it doesn’t address Teleport specifically, it generalizes the entire combat mechanics in catagorize so you could learn how to use them properly in combat situations:

GW2 is not about grinding and farming.
It’s about exploring and doing many different content with friends.Getting gold is suppose to naturally happen.
So yes, I hope they nerf this…but it doesn’t, that’s the problem
It does for me… That’s why I don’t farm! =D
They are extremely good for closing or creating gaps in PvP, and also a good escape mechanism in WvW.
Okay… I suppose I should have specified PvE, sorry. Any reason I should ever equip a teleport skill in PvE?
Honestly they are useful for anything including PvE if you know how to use it.

So I reached to the end of the Aether Blade Jumping Puzzle and it wont let me put on the Diving Goggles?
I’m lvl73 Necromancer!
Take a minute to think of what you’d call a person that refuses to commit to anything so they can never be held accountable for not doing things.
That’s a really poor attitude to take. Let’s say for example they DID decide to say, definitively, “we will make guild halls”. They work pretty steadily for it for half a year, hype it up, get a ton of feedback.
Then, they realize that there’s something in the code that’s hanging them up and won’t let them go any further. Some layover from the original Guild Wars (because the GW2 game is just using a heavily modified engine from GW1). Something is in the way, it can’t be fixed/adjusted without completely re-writing the game engine from scratch.
(As an aside, yes, this type of thing does happen, as players from World Of Warcraft will attest to. Eventually after the Cataclysm expansion, Blizzard broke down and started re-programming the game from scratch to fix some major issues that came from how quickly and largely the game expanded. It was never meant to support the player base it had, and it really started to show before the recoding project was started.)
SO now, it’s either dedicate a huge team to months and months and months of work, for relatively little payout, just to implement one feature that was promised. Of course, it would be ridiculous to take all of that time and development energy away from literally everything else just to implement guild halls. So, instead, the idea is scrapped.
What do you think the fallout from that would be? And don’t say something naive like, “The code can’t be THAT hard to change.” Programming is complicated. It’s layers on top of layers on top of layers. ESPECIALLY when you have a system like they’re using for GW2, where they essentially took one game that already existed and lumped new programming on top of it, programming that was never intended to work with that original game to begin with.
This is the reason why they can’t “dedicate” themselves with a public response. Because if something like this would come up, the community backlash would be catastrophic.
You said there’s many reason ArenaNet has this stance and for good reasons.
Can you give me some examples of what reasons, good reasons, those might be?I think this should be a sufficient enough response to your question as well, Abaddon. :p
Thank you Shadow <3
If we come up with what appears to be a solid idea for Guild Halls, will ANet actually carry through with it and put the work into making it and making it right?
You’re never going to get an answer to this question. The absolutely official response is that ANet will never let us in on any projects they’re working on before they are released. There are a lot of reasons for this, and I understand why they have that stance.
That being said, if they ever were to want to implement guild halls, and if they were to use ideas here, they would still never tell us about it until it’s launched. That’s just how it works. So, whether this whole thing is a hypothetical, or whether it actually goes somewhere, it’s not ANet’s policy to tell us, nor should they be obligated to either way.
If you don’t want to “waste your time” discussing hypotheticals like this, then you don’t have to. Some of us love knowing that they’re listening to our ideas, even if nothing ever comes out of it. Just having the discussion and spreading the ideas is enough for most of us.
You said there’s many reason ArenaNet has this stance and for good reasons.
Can you give me some examples of what reasons, good reasons, those might be?
I don’t agree with current policy that they cant tell us what project they are working on since I feel it’s important to include the players into their work to get the best quality game out there. Since last I checked, devs are making the game for us primary to make money not just for themselves.
I’d like an asnwer to this question:
“Why is it a good stance and what 3-4 reasons can you provide me with examples why ArenaNet policy like this is any good for the game?”
Thanks for taking the time to read! ^-^
My PC is hooked up on 60 Inch TV and I play on xbox360 controller on my sofa since GW2 Beta and I still do today.
Console is a bad idea because it will limit ArenaNet’s workflow in terms of updates and adding new zones and such. Trust me I played FFXI which is MMO on Console and every expansion pack they needed a new game/disc you needed to install which took hours and it was annoying.
The speed of updates right now is possible in GW2 because PC performance and the servers are fast. Just keep it on PC and play it like a console like I am! It feels the same but better!
Because it’s hard they need to add new Armor/Weapon skins that’s exclusive to the puzzle to reward those who truly are skill-ful at the content.
Skills should reward players!
Hurray! People like my idea already!
=D
I hope Mike ’Obrien the founder of ArenaNet is reading this post.
We do love SAB and want it back forever!
Yeah…. Sooner we have SAB the better!
I’d be happy to help you and your friend out.

You make money and We have fun! =D Everybody Wins!
I just need a person, group, guild who will teach me how to play this game. i’m not new to mmo’s, and idk what I want to do as a proffession.
You can Join my guild and I’d be happy to walk through the game and play with you!

Just wanted you to know Chris…
I get excited on this thread when you or other devs reply.
I’m like… “Oh Snap! I gotta check the post and see what devs are saying”
Iol idk how to describe the feeling but it gets me exciting when I know there’s a reply. Even if it’s just something as simple as this.
I’m tempted to try out a private server after this patch to play the golden days of GW2.
Though I never actually played on a private server before and worry about getting hacked if I do…
This sucks. Why must thoughts like this enter my mind…
Why did they remove the Golem Chess minigame in Metric proviance?
This better be a bug…
This kitten is broken…
It’s because it’s been destroyed as part of the Living Story, but you find that out during the story itself. Rather than have two versions, one for people who have done that chapter and one for people who haven’t, they simply made it look the same from outside and closed it off.
Although one change is visible from outside, a ghost appears on the west wall who IMO is a pretty big spoiler.
Oh and you can get inside, just not through the gates:
Jesus dude… You didn’t have to spoil it if I was going to experience it in game Story Mission…
You could of said “You’ll experience it in Story Mission. Something happens”.
lol I guess I’m going to pretend I don’t know. Hate spoilers!
This is a serious issue guys…
The gates to Fort Salma are now perminantly closed for exploring?
Why?
They moved the Waypoint outside of Fort Salma and closed off the gates.
Does anybody know why?
Did I miss something? Please because I love exploring and this makes me sad.
I wonder how many places in GW2 are now closed off like this.
Here’s a video of what Part Salma was like inside:
Alright I just want to confirm Low level newbies can now enjoy PvP and I can now play with my friend and teach her everything about the game.
She is a competitive PvPer and wants to learn things through the PvP aspect of the game with Everything Unlocked.
This is great! Now all ArenaNet has to do is let them have access to it VIA shortcut on the top left corner of screen for the sake of convenience!
Jesus this is insane! The New Player Experience is making things harder on us already lol
Thanks for the help <3
They can go in, they just need to manually walk through the portal.
I’m going to try that out right now and see if it works.
Thanks
Can anyone else Confirm this? Any Links?
Thanks!
This new player wanted to jump straight to PvP and practice with me but she tells me she can’t go to (Heart of Mists) because the game tells her she needs to be lvl 22?
I made a new character that’s lvl2 and I can go to (Heart of Mists) for s-PvP but she can’t?
Is this a bug or is ArenaNet telling their players they now can’t do what they want when they want to?
Any information regarding this would help because I’m confused and I want to help this new player out as best I can.
Thank you!
I just want to quickly add, there are some errors on this chart of how stuff is unlocking, as well as 1st character vs. account unlocks when some of these systems were carried between regions. We’re trying to identify what happened and repair those things assigned the wrong account/character fields, as well as levels.
Wait, are you saying that people who have leveled to level 80, when they make a new character, they won’t have to go through those unlocks like that? So what is supposed to happen for people with level 80s leveling an alt?
OMG I want to know too!
I support this concept!
I played beta and they did something like this but never showed results at the end.
Instead of CDIs… they should do this. I feel it’s more effective since majority play the game anyways. Not everyone uses the forums.
The “Good builds” are the ones you make yourself.
Check out my guide to learn how to make builds:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/GW2-Combat-system-101-Guide/first
Im getting tired of motto saying his game is offline until it’s upgraded… All this time waiting.. Cant he just make the game while keeping it open for us to play what’s currently available? Gosh!
We should make another protest event to show more love until it’s returned to us.
We got hit with the need to emergency-key-farm.
What are you talking about?
Did the community stop suddenly?
Did we give up?
Will we have another SAB Event to show support to our beloved SuperAdventBox?
I wish this was permanent so we could play it anytime we wanted.
Is it too much to ask to turn it back on? =(
Hello there.
Here are some short 30 second videos that might help you get an idea what these 3 classes are capable of:
Thief Pistol:
tps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABH_LxGX7m8&index=14
Thief Daggers:
Engineer Pistol/Kit:
Engineer Rifle:
Ranger Combat:
Ranger Without Pet/Stats/Traits:
You judge from there. =)
You can always make Tanky or DPS oriented characters.
But you’ll never be a Tank in this game.
Warrior is still going to be good just like any other class.
Just as long as you know how to play it right.
I say give it a try! =)
