Is thief so UP and nerfed that no one is playing them anymore?
Thief is still reasonably powerful owing to shortbow #5 and Shadow Refuge – between the two of those, the thief can out-rotate anything else in the game, threatening decap and keeping all 3 points under constant pressure simply by being in the match. The traits in Shadow Arts also make it a reasonable support class; you can res downed allies like no other.
For those reasons alone thief will continue to have a role in high level matches – if the other team does not have a thief, your thief can run a member of the other team around the entire match, getting occasional decaps and contributing more simply from rotation potential.
The thief is not a good combat class right now – it is at a disadvantage 1v1 against every class in the game except perhaps warrior, and in general you can only drop an opponent in an even numbered fight if you massively outplay them. This makes thief incredibly frustrating to play – you spend nearly the entire match running away from stronger combatants. This is even moreso when queuing solo, when your teammates are not reliable and your weakness at scoring – and snowballing – kills makes it more difficult to carry on than many other classes.
I still find it fun, as I like winning matches by reading the map better and out-rotating my opponents. You are absolutely a support character however, and if you’re looking to carry you really should be playing something else.
This may be the most reasonable and accurate response to thief post, that I have seen in a long time.
The current system is making the player base smaller by the minute.
While I’ll let the PvP team respond to the other points here, I do want to take a moment and address this:
PvP has steadily grown in population and play hours going on nearly a year now. It’s sky-rocketed since the game went free, and the two weeks before this have been our best weeks literally since the week the game launched. We anticipate this week will be the best week login/play wise PvP has ever had in the history of Gw2.
I don’t want to trivialize your points – and our competitive team has some great reasons why things operate the way they do they’ll lay out and explain in relation to leagues soon: I do want to call out you’re using false population data to support your point.
From an ArenaNet perspective, PvP is the fastest growing part of Gw2 and had more success for us as a business in the last year than it’s had by far in the history of the Guild Wars franchise. Next year is going to be even bigger because of that success.
I’m really proud of the work the team has done and the work our amazing player community who has helped grow competitive PvP just as much as our dev team has and would hate to see that lost in this discussion.

It really is that bad. It has issues down to its core and all of them have had constructive posts with ideas to fix them. However, Karl is in charge of dragonhunter and thinks that adjusting numbers will fix it. It really is no coincidence that Karl is the lead for tempest, dragonhunter, and daredevil.
-with sb and axe/torch my only aoes are player based and running into the shadow refuge is usually a bad idea,
-i have MINIMAL control over my pets, how do i get my wolf in there ? i cant tell him where to move and the animation is like 2 seconds long, so hard to avoid.
- your shadow refuge has a 60 sec cd? ok pistol 5 and dagger 2? dagger 5? the stealth heal? shortbow 5 has a blink with 0 cd easy for escaping, the blind wall and dagger 2? steal has a stealth im pretty sure (working off the top of my head). that is all without actually opening up the game and reading through traits and all utilities. see an engi aoe reveal? retreat and come back just after?
I dont know why you have this fear of standing on a shadow refuge. The counter play to shadow refuge is to literally stand on top of it and cleave.
Wolf f2 has a large area of effect and is easy to use on SR. Simply stand on it and press f2… not hard.
You seem to also have some disillusion that thieves and in infinite pool of initiative. hint they don’t.
Before you assume that I don’t know how to ranger and assume that I only play thief, I will tell you that I multi class everything. Ranger is probably my third most played, with a little over 500 matches. 500 isn’t alot, but it’s enough to know how to easy fight thieves.
I’m sorry but stealth is kitten strong and there needs to be options to fight it. it’s so frustrating to fight a thief or mesmer and have a really close fight just for them to invis away and me sit around picking my nose waiting to get one shot. it lets you get uninterrupted stomps and rezzes and is kitten strong. now that there are SOME reveals to counter play so you don’t auto win or escape every fight you’re getting upset? play around them and try to bait the reveals out maybe? you make it sound like the reveals are permanent.
You sound like you have no experience playing thief. One shot? Autowin? Yeah, you don’t play thief. But please, prove me wrong and screenshot your pvp stat screen including games played on thief.
I should’ve been clearer, but after a close fight the thief or mesmer can stealth away from any unfavourable situation and either run and EASILY escape or reset the fight often coming back in a far healthier state and finishing off the mess they started. I dont bring sic em on my ranger. and even with carrion runes i find myself burst down in seconds. I’m not saying I’m good at pvp. I’m very new to it. but i have no answers or ability to deal with that, my pets wont follow, i wont chase you into a shadow refuge to drop a trap as ill just die in that. so instead i wait, try to heal up then eat a 4 venom backstab and basically die. now you can (and probably will) say L2P!
But the fact remains that stealth is VERY powerful and a very small amount of abilities (one per class) deal with it, and taking those skills often means gimping yourself against non stealth players. so maybe you should learn to play around these reveals just as much as i need to learn how best to deal with stealth itself?
-The only venom that competitive thieves run is basilisk.
-If a thief is in Shadow Refuge, its because they’re trying to recover, don’t let them sit there and do it. Place your aoes on the ring, use your wolf’s fear, etc..
-Is there a debuff that stops your class from clearing condis, using your burst, or regenerating health? No? Welcome to reveal for thief.
That one minute cooldown SR that you dropped to rez a teammate? Don’t worry, engi can pop a 900 unit aoe reveal on a 30 second cooldown.

All 5 shouts together, each can cleanse up to 2 condi with rune and trait. Maybe switch one shout out for Purity, but that’s just overkill.
Burn guards don’t run one shout let alone a bar of them.

They are condi trap rangers with trapper runes on, the condi weapons also have built in dodges.
They have one invuln on a long cooldown and not a whole lot of stab. They won’t have stab and invuln and that many traps….

As is the fate of all thief, rogue, ninja classes, the masses will cry until they are nerfed into the ground. I don’t know why I thought this game would be different.
I’d like to see something that negates or clears all non-boon buffs for a few seconds. It would be nice if abilities like Berserker’s Stance had more counterplay.
It blows my mind that so many people complain about vamp runes, yet no one seems to have a problem with Berserkers stance being on a PASSIVE trait.

It doesn’t just lock thief out of stealth. It locks every profession. Out of stealth. Other professions have stealth and there is a fair bit of AoE stealth.
Other professions with stealth have blocks, invulnerable, and other tools to mitigate damage and conditions. Our main source of damage avoidance/mitigation/condi remove is directly tied to stealth.
As soon as Cele Ele is nerfed, Cele Nerco will take over as the FOTM op build. Be ready for it.

You already can lock a necromancer out of death shroud. Its called Moa.

Hello! I have a fun and interesting idea to jazz up pvp and counterplay. Recently classes and specializations have been receiving an abundance of reveal/stealth removal effects. This is no doubt due to the outcry for counter play to stealth.
It seems that this is something that the dev team wants to move forward with, so I’m not here to ask for a change of mind. Instead, I think we should open up more counter play.
You see, there are a few mechanics in this game that I find annoying and I would rather not play around them. Instead I think we should add some abilities to classes to disable them!
1: Lock : Your target cannot attunement swap or kit swap for 4 seconds.
2: Squat: Your target cannot activate any stances for 4 seconds.
3: lol passives!: Your target cannot benefit from passive stances/immunities for 4 seconds. If a passive stance or immunity is active, it is instantly disabled.
If anyone has anymore neat ideas for counter play, please post them below!

4. Shadow Art Thief’s Merciful Ambush, Stealth down Ally with 0 CD.
It’s not listed in the tooltip, but there is a 10 second CD per ally. Ignorance is typically what gets thief nerfed. Funny that you didn’t mention anything about warrior in your post. I feel that rampages damage is still too strong.
It’s just not a priority for them. Why? Because there is not direct cash from it. That’s why almost all their resources go towards HoT and the Gem Store.
Mr.Matchmaking only shows up if he has some condescending way to defend a broken match making system.

There are 2 reasons why I play this game.
1) lack of mmorpgs with decent pvp
2) /age makes me realize how much time I’ve dedicated.
If something else came along with a decent combat system and an active player base, I’d be gone and never look back. Unfortunately all RPGs seem to focus on raids and PvE.
I main thief and guardian. I’m getting Karl’d at every angle. If thief becomes more dumpster or dragonhunterrd isn’t fixed, I’ll be mmo shopping me. I already have HoT buyers remorse.
I used to have so much fun playing with my P/P, but it just feels limp now.
How is phase traversal any different from judge’s intervention?.

none of those tweaks changes the fact that the longbow feels like combat in slow motion or the dichotomy of cast time virtues when for 3 years the Guardian’s entire core mechanic traits was mostly designed with instant activation virtues.
that and the long as kitten self rooting bow attacks on a class that has the least mobility in the game. (a 600 range 40 sec cooldown leaping virtue that can get interrupted and doesn’t bypass immob ain’kitten
I’d say necromancer has overall worse mobility, and revenant has about equal mobility.
In general yeah, I didn’t really like what I saw of dragonhunter. It sounds like it should be able to give a long range option to the medi guard playstyle, but its just not really implemented well.
I’d rank it along with tempest as the worst elite spec, but tempest is only really bad because its traits offer almost nothing of value. Berserker is somewhere in between good and bad, whereas the rest of the elite specs are really good.

I’m having a similar issue. I will randomly drop from 60fps to 15ish. The current audio will get stuck in a loop( for example I’ll hear whirling wrath over and over.) The game will continue to play. Once I try to close the client, It will freeze and not let me close it. I cannot alt + f4 or CTRL ALT DEL to close it. Each time I have to full reboot my PC.
Since it freezes, I never receive an error message.

ya… .25s cast time.. fastest human reaction time possible is about .1s and ping is about .05s at min for this game. take into account 99% of skills dont actually show theyre being casted until about .1s into it its pretty much mathematically impossible to interupt unless youre literally a god

1s is easy to steal or headshot. And who would face tank LoW? Sure you can JI or imob before hand, but when you’re popping your heal as an oh kitten, what are the odds that you’ll also be able to set up a burst for a huge heal? Shelter is always useful and that’s why it’s always taken.
Is LoW on your bar right now? I doubt it and there’s a reason.

Yes this was all after last Tuesday’s update. Now that I’ve been beaten into ground repeatedly by toker and friends for several days, I’m back to fighting faces I know.

This week has been horrible as a solo player. I have been consistently getting matched against abjurd, apex, etc players. Most of the time they’re duo or triple queue’d. Then for the next 5 to 10 minutes, myself and fellow pugs proceed to bust our kitten just to get rolfstomped in the end.
I know my MMR cannot be anywhere near that high and this is getting really frustrating.
This has to be my worst losing streak since I started the game.
Or I’ve just became to worst player ever over night. Either is believable at this point.
What if there was no cooldown on attunement swap?! Would that help?

Some people play this game for only PvP and never touch PvE. I have several pvp alts that I never leveled. However, I’ve been playing since launch.
Expect about the quality of traits you’ll find in Tempest or Dragonhunter. Or lack of quality, rather.
You are truly the most negative person here (and on every single thread, mind you). Could the same be said about what they did with the Reaper, Chronomancer, Herald, and Berserker? What indication do you actually have that the traits will be bad when they are quite good on at least 4 of the revealed E.specs and at least decent on DH.
I try to be positive, but the last 4 E-specs weren’t Karl.
I play guardian and thief. I’m so tired of getting Karl’d. Please please give at least one of my classes the Robert Gee treatment.
