S/D thieves aren’t OP. In teamfights they dont have that much sustain, they only have 3 evades every 5 seconds unless they use Signet, and once focused they die really fast. They cant 1v1 engis, hambows, eles, or Necros ON POINT which is the only place where 1v1s matter. They’re only slightly more mobile than D/P thieves in terms of landspeed. Speaking of D/P thieves they HARDCOUNTER S/D thieves. Black Powder destroyed any X/D thief.

The fact that this was a stealth nerf was kind of sad. ArenaNet just hid it inside of the patch notes. Instead of fixing the more important bugs they NERF a skill that was already broken.

Best Zerg build is Sword Pistol And Shortbow with full Soldier gear and 20066 traits. All you have to do is open with Sword Pistol, 3333333333333, swap to shortbow when out of initative, back up. 11111222211111, swap, 3333333, swap, 1111112221112. Etc.

Stahp too much bad. The only way a thief can hit 9k BS is literally on people wearing yellow gear with full zerk stats. The highest backstab Ill get on a level 80 is 6k. Also, D/D eles if played to a certain level should have no problems with Thieves. Thieves aren’t the problem. Too many scrubs is.

Also you should main Ele. Thief is so boring in PvE.

If Consume Conditions is enough condition cleanse you must be fighting the worst players on the planet. Literally any scrub can just spam 1 on Necro Scepter and get a consistent 8 bleeds on someone if their only condi clear is on a 25 second CD

ArenaNet Im pretty disappointed. I saw the patch notes today, living story stuff, ooh strength runes got nerfed, maybe next year they’ll nerf perplexity too! Then I saw the Mesmer notes. Seriously WTF ANet? You literally take all the Mesmer communities’ feedback about bugs and balance, ignore all of it for months (maybe even years), and then move on to NERF SWORD 3, A bug that NOBODY cared about, and was not complained about by ANYONE of any profession. You break Mesmer even further when it is already the most neglected, broken, and underpowered class in the entire game. Mesmer needs a large buff. Right now they’re below elementalists pre feature patch. Kitten, they’re worse than the old BC-Frenzy-HB Warriors. My first class in this game was Mesmer. I never got it to 80, but I so badly wanted to play the class in PvP and wreck them nubs. Since then I’ve moved on to Thief and Ele, both of which I wreck Mesmers easily on, but I so badly want them buffed so I can go back to the class that I’ve always liked the most.

Fresh air Ele didn’t necessarily get better, rather, many other over the top specs were nerfed. Warrior hammer damage and healing sig took a hit, dumbfire necro is dead, and CnD thief was hit the hardest of any other spec by ferocity. D/D ele on the other hand has always been WvW meta, and has been reintroduced to SPvP with the new celestial amulet which suits the class very well, and the reverted nerf to cleansing water which basically makes it so that ele has the 2nd best condi cleanse in game. Oh and strength runes are a little OP but I don’t really care. I don’t even run strength on half my classes anymore. IMO only classes that should be running strength runes are ele and warrior.

No no no. Don’t listen to anyone above, they’re all bad. Warrior is the best class in any wvw situation, including roaming. The problem here is that your not running optimized gear. No good roamer will ever run full zerk and scholar runes because you’ll never be above 90% in an outnumbered fight. Im too lazy to post a build but search up " Tapdatmouse legendary warrior build" on YouTube. He’s a well known player and his build is pretty decent.

Nice job 6v1ing me several times, camping at spawn and chasing me across the map, and using ballista against a solo roamer. Funny thing is I took down half your group but you guys always hard-ressed like bosses. Well played.

Recently I’ve been wanting to get a class to level 80. I’ve been playing this game for5 months and all I’ve done is pvp, very little so all I have is a low level thief.
Ill always main Thief in pvp because thats what I feel like pvping with, but if I was to get a character to 80, I would only use it for wvw roaming and dueling in OS arena. Which class is overall better for:

1. Dueling

2. WvW Roaming

3. Outnumbered fights

4. Small man fights

The reason thief is so ‘’game breaking’’ is cause they have quite powerful skills without cooldown. This allows them to spam the strongest skill (defensive or offensive) untill they are out of initive points.

Ok, tell me what Thief skills are “powerful”. Heartseeker? LOL. Flanking strike maybe, but it does low damage and makes the Thief vulnerable after the cast. Pistolwhip? I guess this one kinda, but it costs tons of initiative, and barely does more damage than auto attacking would. Stun and evade frame is the only good part, but can easily be avoided.

Yeah, the leader boards dont really mean anything, but recently I was surprised to see that im #773 on the leaderboards. Last week I was a real low percentage player because the majority of my games were on PRE patch ele, and my winrate was something like 41% after about a hundred games. I recently gave up on ele as I dont really feel like its my play style anymore and started maiming Thief. I have to say, I carry pretty hard with Thief :P. My winrate went up to 52% in a few days and its probably gonna keep rising. It’s kind of alarming though how easy it is to get on the leaderboards if u just win 18/26 games in 2 days. I think Anet should rethink the system if a nub like me can get in the top 1000.

Watching youtube thieves kill bad players is not going to teach newbs anything.

The only tried and true method of learning this profession is learning the profession through PvE and then get a PvPing friend to duel you in sPvP. Then you both can go into WvW and get some kills in.

Sizer doesn’t Youtube and you can see him playing live in PvP. Not sure if you have that much experience with PvP, but in terms of how competent the players there are, they’re almost always much more experienced, especially if you do queues not Hotjoin. The stat balances also make sure that your on an equal level with everyone gear wise. Sizer also does high level dueling, so you can watch that too. Don’t listen to the idiots saying thieves are easy kills. Thief is the best profession in the whole game for carrying teams other than Decap engi, and overall any GOOD team (not APeX, they’re full bunker trash :P) will run a thief.

BTW Sizer’s team won the tournament of legends. Go watch his stream!!!

Ive been going back and forth between these classes since I started the game. Before the April 15th patch, I mained thief because ele was trash tier. After April 15th, I dont know what class to play anymore. Im primarily a pvp player, I dont do pve. But recently I transferred to Maguuma because I want to do wvw. Im also getting more interested in fractals. What class overall is better for pvp, wvw, and pve. I find thief more fun in pvp, but in pve thief is HORRIBLY BORING. Ele is fun in all game modes, but in pvp its a bit lacking compared to thief IMO. Please dont say “play both”. I dont have the patience to get 2 classes to level 80.

Also PLEASE do not need rune of strength without buffing ele. Right now strength runes are the only things carrying ele ATM.

Welcome to the game! Honestly, I could load you with a bunch of stuff about how to be a great thief, but first you should learn the basics of the game. Learn the pve mechanics, how skills work, how to get items, etc. Once you’ve done that, try to do a little bit of hot join pvp. Dont be sad if u get wrecked, its not that thief is bad, its that its hard to play effectively. Learn how to fight opponents better. I would recommend watching Sizer’s gameplay on Twitch TV, hes a really good player and I learned my advanced tactics from watching him. For PVE endgame, go full glass. While leveling though, u can do whatever you want since it won’t matter in the end. In pvp, u should use sword/dagger 20066 build. It will be INCREDIBLY difficult to play at first. If u find yourself frustrated, play a warrior for a bit until u feel you can beat others. Warrior is the easiest class to play, and is more forgiving for new players if they’re having trouble with other classes.

Just a fun thread. I was wondering what everyone rates the classes in terms of how scary they are aesthetically. Some classes, no matter how hard I counter them, sometimes are intimidating to fight.

Yes, I understand that the Mesmer uses AI as a class mechanic. However, shatter specs require a large amount of skill. Phantasm mesmers simply summon AI and run in circles while blocking and blurred frenzying

I think I like the idea of CI 20/20/30. Will test it out tommorrow and see if i like the play style.

Phantasm Mesmer is also a no-no for me. This is for one reason: the build goes against my number one rule for GW2, to play a build that takes skill. Phantasm Mesmer is an AI build. The play style is literally summoning AIs and letting them do the work. I cannot express how much I despise these types of builds. Turret engi, MM necro. God no. Whenever I see these builds in hot join I will go out of my way to call my guildies in and deliberately keep attacking those AI build and verbally attacking themuntil they rage quit, and I have no shame. They deserve it. To rely on computer programming because they can’t learn to play is incredibly sad.

In short, no.

Not much of a PvE hero here, haven’t done a dungeon in a good 3 weeks. I’m planning on making a new main class for PvE and WvW after I deleted my ONE 80 to transfer to Maguuma. I was just wondering what the best classes are for fractals. I already have a few classes in mind, but I just wanna make sure they’re viable. From what I’ve heard:

2. Guard
3. Ele
4. Teef
5. Ranger
6. Mes

Just an idea. It’s not like ArenaNet takes our ideas anyway, so no point of arguing of what traitline.

Just a cool idea I thought of. I thought it would make sense in water, but any other trait line would be fine.

Chill: 200 damage/second Durarion increase: 10%
This would allow for condi eles to be more viable by allowing for a strong extra condi that also has a ton of utility. The duration increase would allow for more chill uptime.
This maybe be OP but I fel like condi ele should be a thing and if something like this was implemented it would be awesome. Eles would truly be the masters of burning and chill.

Shadow Arts is terrible for PvP because when your in stealth your not doing damage in a team fight, and since there’s no aggro on you, your teammates are taking more pressure. It’s also much easier for enemies to fight on point with you because when your in stealth, they can cap the point. This is more notable on home or far when 1v1. SA is good for wvw but for pvp, its garbage.

Yeah..read OP, I wreck mesmers on my thief. You would think I would know how to counter myself, but that’s not the case :P.

Sigh OK, lemme rephrase my question. What mesmer spec is there that isn’t hard countered by thieves, isn’t incredibly boring to play and is viable in PvP. NOT PU. ENOUGH ABOUT PU. I don’t care, even if it was viable, I would never play a stealth spam class.

D/P is hard to play, sure, but it definitely has things to survive. Pistol #5 is an AoE blind every second, and If u use it properly u can shut down melee warriors. D/P also counters sword specs due to much higher burst, which is key in thief v thief.

Ok, explain to me at what role PU is good at. Condi spam? Necro and engi are way better, and necro wrecks guards with boon corrupting. Point holding? LOL Stealth can’t cap. Killing 1v1 fast? Warriors can LITERALLY ignore you. Portal bot is the only thing, but shatter mesmers can portal and have a role. PU doesn’t even counter thieves either, at least not good S/D thieves.

I don’t see how having the ability to dodge 10 times in a row is hard. You will survive stuff that you shouldn’t be surviving simply by spamming evades. Let’s say I’m bad at dodging and I’m fighting a hammer warrior, instead of watching the animations I can spam 4-5 evades in a row when the warrior switches to hammer and could outplay him with luck.

Lol. That’s what a bad S-D thief does versus a bad warrior. In a period of 5 seconds, S/D they can dodge 3 times without signet of agility. With signet of agility it can dodge almost 6 times on a 30 sec CD. A good warrior would know this and count the dodges. Good thieves dont spam randomly. There’s certain things to look out for, the warrior reaches up with his hands, dodge. The warrior jumps, dodge. Your obviously a bad so you wouldn’t know what to dodge. Go play S/D thief and you’ll see how hard it is.

No way I’m using PU though. Yes, I play cancer ele and S/D thief, but PU is a whole new level of cheese. Guess my dreams of being a mesmer will never come true.

I was just wondering how you’re supposed to counter them. Is there a certain build to use? (Don’t say PU or Phantasm…Im asking for a viable build)

So today I was in this dueling server. I was wrecking some nubs, having some good fun. But then I fight a condi warrior. I can usually beat warriors, but I don’t dodge pin down and I die to condi overload. GG. Rematch, I get hit by pin down again. WTF!!!
Next duel, I finally wake up and dodge pin down, and I beat him. I then beat him again. The next time I beat him, he starts whispering me. “Lol nub thief no skill” “Nice 3 spam” “Your spec isn’t hard to play at all”. I didn’t really mind cuz obviously he doesn’t play thief, so he doesn’t understand how unforgiving the class is. What really got me was when he started to gank me with his thief buddy. So, my question is, if your so good warrior, why can’t u counter my “no skill 3 spam” with your oh so difficult condi warrior?

Don’t know what’s your definition of “counter” to S/D, so i’ll just post some hard match-ups:

• Any x/P thief
• Condibomb builds
• Bunker Engie
• D/D Elementalist
• Medi Guardian
• MM Necro

Hell, I’d rather fight a Hambow than any of those specs, when I’m playing S/D

I feel that the only spec that counters S/D out of these is a well played X/P thief. The blind field offers a big advantage in melee.

In terms of S/D I’ve found that SA thieves, and AI builds are incredibly tough. D/P SA thieves are difficult because their blind field is hard to avoid since you main damage is melee, and they have a lot of sustain. In terms of AI builds, MM necro I can usually beat by stealing fear, fearing their minions, going in with sword, then out with shortbow until steal is up again. It takes incredibly long though. Turret engies are impossible in pvp because there isn’t enough space to kite them away from their turrets. In an open field u have to range them until all the turrets die and then go in. If the engi is bad u can draw him away from the turrets and wreck him. Phantasm mesmers depends on spec, but usually I just port in and out trying to draw the phantasms away from the real one until I get a good opening. If the Mesmer gets lucky and baits out your stun break and then stuns u again, ur usually screwed cuz the Swordsman and zerker will eat you.

Right now Im kind of stuck as to what kind of armor I should wear while roaming. Currently Im using mostly zerk with one Knight ring, knight dagger and chest. This leaves me with about 2200 armor, which is pretty glassy, but at the same time Im only hitting 1.3k lightning whips, so not really glass damage. Im wondering what a good armor setup would be. Build im running is 00266. All stats are currently unbuffed without food or runes, as Im poor :P. Thanks.

D/D can do just fine against s/d thieves; it’s a pretty fair fight. S/d has two attacks that deal any significant damage to you, the auto-attack and larcenous strike. You can kite and out-range the auto attack, and larcenous strike is telegraphed enough to dodge reliably. There’s no counter for evades. You can only try to hit them between evades. So, just don’t get frustrated and stay patient. If you’re using a 0/0/2/6/6 celestial build, you have the sustain to wait. There really isn’t any trick; you beat that build by outplaying the Thief.

Thanks for the advice. I never thought about outranging them. However, I don’t see how it’s possible to dodge every single LS. We only have 4 dodges counting updraft and BS…

So recently I’ve started playing ele as my main in pvp again, and I feel as though I can demolish almost every spec because I’ve spent time playing the meta specs and learning what to dodge. I can beat hambows, engies, etc. However, I can’t find a way to beat S/D 20066 thieves. I personally have played the spec for a bit on my own thief and I demolish eles. I can’t seem to find a way to counter play evades and ports. Even if I get an updraft on them, I can’t get enough pressure on them to beat good ones. Assuming similar skill(Aka im not fighting a scrub)how can an ele beat an S/D thief? Im running celestial D/D 00266 w str runes btw.

I dont understand why people hate skyhammer, if some enemy takes it just tell an ele to tornado him out of the sky…

Meh. Meteor Shower+Tornado is awesome for nuking bunkers….
