Why are Thieves so awful?

in WvW

Posted by: Elthurien.8356

Elthurien.8356

I disagree that thieves are worthless in a zerg. Sure if they want to stay in a glass cannon build with berserker gear they will undoubtedly be more detriment than help. However, a Thief that builds for Shadow Arts and Acrobatics I a very worthy addition to a zerg purely for their ability to burst on command using cluster bomb.

In combat Stealth is a pain to deal with, but if ANet were to remove it (I don’t think they will) then the Thief would need a major overhaul defensively. Stealth is their primary form of defence, without it they would fall apart as they have a low base health, no protection/aegis, only two ways of getting stability (steal from mesmer/dagger storm), and lose a valuable condition removal.

If you want to be a part of a zerg, get Soldier (Pvt) gear, some cleric or magi trinkets (or soldier) build for shadow arts and acrobatics. Staying alive is paramount, then support your squad with clusterbombs and poison cloud/weakness blast combo

You’ll never get those people who are complete carebears to play WvW.

Stopped reading there. People that don’t play WvW are carebears, huh? Makes sense to me. So people who play games differently than you are less because you say so. Yeah I have no reason to finish reading your post as I’m sure the rest of it is just as ignorant and immature as the start of it.

Funny thing is, every form of PvP/WvW in this game would be classed as carebear PvP by anyone who has played a real PvP game. Don’t take it to heart. When I read the word carebear on MMO forums these days it just makes me smile. It’s cute in a way that only someone who has played FFA MMOs would understand.

WvW Achievements are unrealistic

I’d be happy just to see some silly achievements in WvW like Warhammer online had back in the day.
Get killed by a catapult shot? Get achievement and ‘the squashed’ title.
Die in less than 2 seconds? Get achievement and ‘the squishy’ title
Killed by lava font? Get achievement and ‘the toasted’ title
Killed by ride the lightning? Get achievement and ‘the shocked’ title
Kill 100 elementalists? get achievment and ‘Mage Slayer’ title
etc etc etc

Add simple, fun and ridiculous stuff in there that just naturally happens while you play WvW. Keep the never ending out of reach stuff there for the truly dedicated.

Thiefs/Ele's more survivability than guards?

in WvW

Posted by: Elthurien.8356

Elthurien.8356

It just so happens I have an 80 thief, Ele and a Guardian.

Of the 3, the Guardian is WAY more survivable. Not only that, but it can get in close to an enemy zerg and tag dozens of enemies at a time. It makes at least double the number of loot bags.

I can’t speak for the Elementalist side of things but my Guardian kittens all over my Thief for survivability in WvW. A lot more weapon options too.

im not QQing. but think. i will be happy if somebody change my spirits, traps, pets for stealths. now ask thieves do they want change stealth for pets? :p

I’d trade Thief stealth for Ranger weapon variety and decent traps, keep the pets, spirits, shouts and signets. Actually, if it was possible to remove ranger pets completely in exchange for something else I’d be all over that profession like a dog on a mailman.

Guardian: Flail (a mace head chained to a handle, sort of like what the witch-king of Angmar wields in Return of the King). Would combine a strong mid-range combat option with CC.

it’s called a morning star
would be a cool weapon for necros

A flail would be cool.
Military Flails come in a variety of shapes and sizes, some with one chain and a single steel ball or club, others with two or three chains with a steel ball or club. A nunchuku is a type of flail.

Edit: A morning star is not a flail. It is a mace with a spike on top.

Are Ranges really in THAT BAD a place?

in Ranger

Posted by: Elthurien.8356

Elthurien.8356

I highly suggest playing through each profession until you find one that you enjoy the most. I came into this game fully expecting to play a Thief and nothing else, but over time I found that I didn’t enjoy the Thief as much as I thought, so I rolled a Ranger and found that I loved the variety I had between ranged and melee, I then branched out to other professions and enjoyed the Guardian and then the Engineer until I had given all of the professions a good play through. I still love the Thief but I also love all of the other professions. The Engineer is probably the most fun because of the variety but anytime I feel a profession is getting stale, I change builds, change gear or change professions until I find the one that suits my style for however long it takes to get bored of it. I’m back playing the Thief at the moment with a whole different build, weapons and skills to master. Regarding Ranger specifically, I can think of at least 5 different ways to play it off the top of my head based around different weapons, traits and builds that work in any given situation. My favourite 3 ranger builds would be spirit/melee build, condition/trap throwing build and dual bow ranged dps, that’s not even including whether I’d use ranged, melee or tanky pets (pets wont hold aggro like wow but they can still be tanky)

New skills/weapons!! Will Ele finally get GS?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Elthurien.8356

Elthurien.8356

I hope Eles don’t get a GS. And tbh, I don’t think they will. First of all it doesn’t fit in at all with the lore, and secondly knowing Eles the GS build would probably make them even more OP. I hope Anet focus on giving attention to professions that need the most help – i.e. Rangers and perhaps Engis.

I’m curious why you don’t think it fits with the lore when:

  • You could run a warrior/elementalist in Guild Wars
  • Elementalists already have a fiery greatsword kit/spell that grants a whole new weapon bar

Rangers and Engineers are fine, most people say they’re bad until they meet someone that knows how to play one (tPvP Spirit Rangers and Bomb engineers are awesome)

what's wrong with using shortbow in a zerg?

in Thief

Posted by: Elthurien.8356

Elthurien.8356

When a commander calls for water fields and blast combos, they will definitely notice a lack of thieves using shortbows. Occasionally I run without a shortbow in WvW and you can it is noticeably obvious when a zerg is missing that clusterbomb blast finisher. I run a 0/30/0/20/20 build most nights for a balance of damage and survivability (Soldier armour/Berserker trinkets) specifically tailored to supporting a squad with high initiative regen/clusterbomb blast finishers. I’d never use it for roaming though.

I forgot to mention that in massive 3 way battles, skill lag kills clusterbomb reliability for me. Not much anyone can do in those situations besides spray and pray

I have also observed a few times of SoR being capable of fielding forces of 60+ people in 3 maps during oceanic and past primetime SEA. Why this doesn’t happen every night? Perhaps someone with an unbiased viewpoint could explain it to me.

Sounds to me like it was just an odd day where we had a particularly high amount of casuals (read: person that doesn’t play every day).

Could also be a floating squad. I’ve only ever seen one map queued during Oceanic/SEA timeslot and that is a coordinated defense to shore up our borderland.

So. Stealth Trap.

in WvW

Posted by: Elthurien.8356

Elthurien.8356

With the latest patch you get badges so fast that it should really not be a problem at all. The more strategic ways to use it would be against perma-stealthing zergs and on a rare occasion, a thief.

Indeed, so easy for a PvE player to get a gift of battle now, but a WvW player still needs to do dungeons for Gifts. I would have loved the choice to get dungeon tokens for Gift of the Noble instead of more Badges of Honor.

Stealth traps are better used to counter mesmers veiling a zerg, it’s not ideal to use it against a roaming Thief. Drop them at walls that regularly get sieged (NE bay) or inside tower/keep gates.

Roamers are MUCH More Valuable Than Zergers

in WvW

Posted by: Elthurien.8356

Elthurien.8356

Both roamers and zergs are important to WvW. A roaming group is great for disruption of supply and diversion tactics, a zerg is great for large assaults against defended objectives, fast captures of undefended objectives and crushing the morale of smaller groups. A server that doesn’t use roamers will find themselves constantly starved of supply and unable to hold objectives against a server that fields both roaming groups and zergs. A server that only fields roamers will find themselves crushed at every opportunity. It’s better to have both.

Edit: I’m only talking about roaming groups (3-5 people). Solo roamers take too long to capture anything besides sentries and yaks, it’s far more efficient to move as a group when roaming.

My lowest level is 30, I have one of each class, and I’m not likely to spend any real money to get another character slot just so I can use this. Can you please change this so that it gives you XP instead of levels on characters 20 and higher?

Save it for when they introduce a new class (assuming they will). Or make a new character with a different race/profession combination.

You can’t compare an MMO’s graphics and rendering capability with an FPS, an FPS game doesn’t need to track the data of hundreds of skills, conditions, boons, combo finishers and hundreds of players in bottlenecked areas with no multi-core support.

Are WvW zones too small?

in WvW

Posted by: Elthurien.8356

Elthurien.8356

I’m not sure bigger maps would help to be honest. The zerg will still zerg, it just means they will PvD more because they have more room to avoid other zergs. I would love to see bigger maps though or at least see more of the Borderland being used for objectives (space is wasted on centaur & skritt).

AoE cap being removed and more choke points would break the zerg up and give smaller groups a fighting chance.

Add friendly fire to AoE and Siege and you will see a lot less zerging. I know it will never happen because of the way the combo system works but it truly is one solution that will eliminate zerging and force actual skilled gameplay.

Regarding GvG… Why don’t they do GvG in Obsidian Sanctum? Wouldn’t it be the ideal location for GvG and not take up valuable queue? (Legitimate question from someone that has no idea about GvG)

If the community ignores a zone; I want it overrun. I want to feel like what we do matters.

You mean, like Orr? Because that’s already in the game.

Orr doesn’t change… oh you lose a few bases.. that’s not the same thing I am describing..

I’m talking dropping in events which change the state of map. If the orrions take over a base; modify it. change the architecture over time; change the surrounding terrain; likewise when the sylvarri beat them back show reclamation.

I am talking advancing fronts. You can never take back Orr.. Even though you have killed in the story the primary influence.. you have undead.. just mindlessly loitering around.. there is no story to their movements; no reason for why they are standing there if they are an undead army under the direction of dark magic.

Set your clock it’s time for the hourly Orr event farm; Plinx is up. There should be generals leading the army; their deaths should be felt across the zone. You should fear their presence on the battlefield.

This is where I think Rift really took the crown with dynamic events. Strip away the WoW style gear progression and all the other regurgitated crap that Rift was and just look at the way they did Zone events, Rifts, Invasions and footholds and they were very epic. They didn’t have much of a permanent effect either but they ensured everyone stopped what they were doing and took part when fifty rifts opened up and a megaboss marched ttoward the major population hub.

That is what Orr is missing for me, with Orr being a permanent wasteland full of undead you don’t really care what happens. However if There was a level 80 map that was a fully civilised poplation hub with a few isolated hostile areas that could suddenly become besieged by dozens of invading forces in a huge meta event….. that would be epic. People would actually care because their routines would be interrupted until the invasion was beaten back.

I don’t care what happens to Orr. If Divinities Reach was suddenly under attack and flooded with undead I might actually give a kitten

It depends on the engineer and what skills they use. I definitely think Tengu will be the next race although I’d love to play an Ogre.
Heavy armour profession is the current missing link
Of the heavy armour professions the missing theme is Air and darkness orientated;
The missing conditions are confusion, torment, poison and with the exception of one guardian trait, chill.
The missing combo fields are darkness, smoke, poison, ethereal, ice & lightning.

With the above information/process of elimination I fully expect the next race to be Tengu and the next profession to be an Air-Themed Heavy Armour profession with the above features to match the Tengu (Avian/Air theme).

How about toolkit, pistol/shield engi’s? It’s a strawman argument mate. It l depends on the individual players skill. I play both Engineer and Thief (as well as a Guardian and ranger) and I rarely have trouble fighting thieves.

A good thief is a good thief, if he’s better than me he wins, if he’s not he dies or runs like a kitten. I can’t say I’ve ever had much trouble using a flamethrower or a toolkit against a thief. Depends on the opponent. I can’t honestly remember the last time a D/D thief pulled the preloaded C&D/Mug/Backstab combo on me though, Must be nearly 3 months ago.

@Jesiah 1-2 second fights are lame and boring to you, long drawn out bunker fights are lame and boring for me (on any of my 80’s not just the thief). There does need to be balance 10-30 seconds is a better range but any longer is just rinse and repeat until one side makes a mistake. A glass cannon thief can get lucky with a 1-2 second kill but it’s a gimmicky build that probably spends more time dead or looking for easy targets than actually doing anything constructive.

If a 1v1 takes longer than a few minutes I’m just gonna walk away. Actually had this happen fighting a mesmer with my engineer a few weeks back. Easily took 10m of back and forth until we both just gave up and went our separate ways. I hate those fights where I’ve seen my longest cooldowns refreshed more than two or three times in a fight, it might he exciting for some people but it’s boring as kitten for me. I love the fast paced action of GW2, one slip up is critical and could mean defeat.

OP Troll. Very long winded and poorly thought out troll.

FT is godly. It’s easily the most fun kit we have. Does mad damage to groups, and is so easy to bunker with.

I’m not sure why having a different thought out opinion counts as being a “goblin” but no I truly do believe the devs can give us a far superior version of this kit. Besides I don’t believe i’ve ever seen an engi who has used it with exceptions.

Just because you haven’t seen us doesn’t mean we don’t exist.
I currently play a pure juggernaught build (Pvt gear) and absolutely love it in WvW.
20 points minimum in the firearms line for juggernaught major trait.
20 points minimum in the alchemy line for the Deadly Mixture.
30 points spare to place into whatever I feel like using to enhance the build. Depending on how I feel like running on the day I could go deeper into alchemy (HGH) or firearms, into explosives for enhanced performance (more might), into inventions for more toughness, power shoes and energized armor, or tools for speedy kits or static discharge.
The versatility is amazing with Flamethrower as the foundation of the build.

It’s quite exhilarating dropping a line of napalm on a downed enemy and using rocket boots in their face to get area might combos.

I agree with Delarme that server merges is inevitable now, specially with the likes of Vabbi and FoW. The only question is when.

I’m from FoW and I disagree..
I chose FoW as server since it had a nice ring to it (little did I know that it would be in T9 WvW for ages).. Should servers merge, then I’m off, transferring to a high tier server to troll, since I have no more “home” server at that time..

And I’m quite getting kitten ed because of all those kittenheads mocking the T9. Meet me in 1v1 in the battlefield, and I’ll show you T1-3 what a T9 ranger can do.. (yeah, ranger, you read it!)

WvW Tier has nothing to do with personal skill. Some of the best roaming Thieves and rangers I’ve seen were from Yaks Bend and Tarnished Coast. Yaks Bend had an awesome roaming havoc squad of thieves that I’ve never seen the likes of again
