Easy mode is playing a thief in WvW. It’s like playing a single player game on easy difficulty.

Go play a thief in PvE then talk.

Actually, go and play in WvW then talk. The only people that truly complain about thieves have never played one for a significant amount of time in WvW. When I get bored of being indestructible on my Guardian, I play my thief to remind me that you can actually die when you make a mistake.

Does SoR not show up during the day, or is their lead just so huge that they don’t care? I was looking forward to attacking their stuff on EB but SBI took away that option.

I imagine the SoR regulars are giving themselves a well-earned break.

Some of us are still out there having fun, I don’t see the point in us completely dominating you guys like other servers have done to us in the past. We’re here to have a fun and social experience first and foremost. Many of our late night commanders are from the US staying up for ridiculous amounts of time and deserve a well earned rest like you said.

Definitely had some great battles last night. Man I love those Pangloss battles. A TC member even saluted me last night after I put a ballista down their gullets, I wanted to return the salute but couldn’t find which bodypart belonged to which pirate, so many peglegs and eyepatches o.O

Stealth suggestion: More but Less

I like black powder as it is thanks and Infiltrator Arrow is much better as it is, it just needs better range. I think there should be less stealth overall to be honest. I would rather see more diversity to our profession instead of forcing stealth onto every aspect.

I would love to see more emphasis on vigour, dodging (Dodge grant protection?), endurance regeneration, boon stealing and less emphasis on stealth. Stealth is a defining feature but it shouldn’t be our only feature.

I would suggest going Sword/Pistol for levelling with shortbow in reserve.
Aim for 25/30/0/0/15 traits or 10/30/0/15/15. Black Powder is your tanking skill for mob and auto attack when you need to regenerate initiative for Black Powder. Caltrops for AoE Bleeding, Scorpion Wire to pull ranged into your grasp and Signet of Shadows for speed and additional AoE blind with Signet of Malice to regenerate health with your attack.

Note: The utility skills listed were chosen because they are easy to get at low level, i suggest experimenting with all of your skills to train for future use, and to also try different weapons as you go and read your major traits.

Dagger pistol is good for levelling as well but Sword hits three targets hard whereas d/p hits one target fast.

Good ideas here. I would also like to see “expert explorable mode” where the dungeon is scaled to 80 and returned to pre nerf status.

Solo dungeons made an appearance with the last couple of patches, vexxas labs and that tomb in Lornars or Dredgehaunt. The tomb mini dungeon with the darkened room was amazing fun, I would love to see more of that.

Thieves in WvWvW need nerfs. Perma stealth, highest burst, fastest run speed. Not even remotely balanced.

They don’t have the fastest run speed since last patch, necro, ranger and ele are just as fast if not faster (d/d ele)
Highest Burst and Permastealth are two completely different builds you can’t have both on the thief and warriors can put out much higher burst at a faster pace with hb.

I think Rangers and Engineers need the most work for PvE but they aren’t as bad in WvW or PvE as people make them out to be. I play a trap ranger in WvW with LB/S&Wh/Torch and I’m just as lethal as my thief.

It has been suggested before and I think the response was that it couldn’t be done due to the personal story part of your character identity. No doubt it would require a lot of developer resources to go back and change ‘hooks’ and isn’t financially viable at the moment. If they could make revenue off of it somehow and work out that the time to code and unhook racial story code would still be a good business decision and make them money I’m sure they would put a team on it eventually.

This is one of the reasons I really don’t like these personal story type things in modern MMOs. Linear solo experiences are becoming more and more prevalent in recent years and I don’t think it is good for the genre. If I want story I’ll play a single player RPG where the whole development has gone into the story and lore, not some half-baked MMO version. MMOs used to be about making your own story, not living someone elses script.

Me and a friend finished queensdale at lvl 10 last night with 100% map completion and did quite a few events. Sure we didn’t do any personal story missions but I don’t think that would have given us the 7 extra levels we were missing that the area says it’s designed for.

The thing is I do not remember having such an issue finding experience back when the game first launched. On my charr I went through that area and came out at lvl 16 or so without much effort.

I think exp amounts have definitely been tweaked since launch but I do not remember reading that they were in any notes.

Just a question regarding this, were you gathering wood, ore, herbs along the way? I think the lowest level that I completed Queensdale was about 12 on my Warrior, and I just got the rest by unlocking all my weapon skills and did a little bit of cooking and jewelcrafting which brought me up to 15. Despite Queensdale saying it is 1-17, the mobs in Kessex start at 15 so I consider that to be the natural level to progress. I might level faster because I use food and sharpening stones for the 20% xp bonus.

I’m on Sanctum of Rall and 90% of my time is spent in a small group doing interception and fast assault or blocking. Nothing forces you to join a zerg or follow commanders, find like-minded players and roll with them. Just last night we ninja’d a keep with 4 players while two zergs were busy duking it out over Stonemist. We regularly run into PiNK squads of a similar size as us too, skirmishes from anywhere between 3vX to 7vX are very common in my experience.

I would love to see a hammer option for engineers. Mace is already covered by toolkit and to be honest I love the versatility that engineers have on offer, I’m constantly switching kits in battle and I consider it far superior to weapon swapping if I rotate through kits in battle. When compared to my thief and his minuscule amount of weapon skills and the restricting initiative the engineer is a breath of fresh air.

Elementalists do not need new weapons, they have the most weapon skills in the game and can reliably rotate through attunements to have consistent combat uptime with minimal worry about cooldown times. All professions need some love in the actual weapon skills themselves but I would expect this to be a constant issue as the game grows.

Remove the customer and the business will wither away. Gold Buyers should be banned just as much as gold sellers. The problem begins with gold buyers, It should be made public knowledge that buying gold outside of the Black Lion Trader is an offence that is punishable by an account ban. I do not understand why players still do this, it is such an unsafe thing to do and usually ends up with the account being stolen anyway.

The lower levels are miserable. Once you get into the 30s and especially 40s the pace picks up a bit. Later the DEs that rapidly spawn make levelling so much better.

I don’t know what to do about the lower levels but in my mind it does need some attention. It was okay during the pre-release and first week when so many players were in those areas that DEs spawned frequently, but even then levelling was still slower than the mid-levels.

This is interesting. I read a thread in these forums yesterday stating the exact opposite of this. Players were complaining that they had no progression after they unlocked all of their weapon slots and utility/ultimate slots at level 30.

Personally, I have had no problem reaching the end of a zone around the desired level, I don’t craft so much on new characters but I do gather everything I see. Maybe chopping wood and mining ore is what keeps you down? I don’t have answers but I don’t have the issue so I can only guess

I think elementalist would get portal before a thief would.

I think engineers would first, tunneler/sapper engineers were used throughout the Great War (WW1) to tunnel behind the frontline and also to blow up enemy emplacements from below.

Like I said earlier though, conceptually, the Thief could work as a burglary ability. It was done in Warhammer Online with the Witch Hunter.

When it comes to skilled players v/s other skilled players, thieves are best at killing other thieves. Thief is in fact the weakest of all the classes (believe it or not).

Thief was my first 80 and is still my favourite profession but it is the weakest of my 80s. The majority of thieves I encounter on my Guardian & Ranger don’t stand a chance unless they are equal or better skilled and every fight I lose against another thief gives a new lesson. My prybar engineer is only 41 and has no trouble against most thieves in WvW unless they are fully geared. This is a learn to play issue which is why we are seeing fewer posts complaining about thieves.

How does EU cover Oceanic periods? Because your server locations are in Germany it would add 200ms latency to Oceanics making WvW virtually unplayable. US servers provide better average latency coverage for Oceanic/EU and US compared to EU serers which only favor EU/US. Hence why US servers are optimal for WvW

This is not fun, and I am on SOR. I originally joined because I I heard about the story about how the server got its name and have loved every minute of it so far until now. There have always been a ton of friendly guilds and helpful people, one of the first things I saw in chat was a guy in Queensdale offering welcome gifts to lowbies. And I love how SOR has a public Mumble and raidcall server for coordination. But I don’t want to be on a server full of last minute band-wagoners and glory-hounds, and WvWvW is not fun when you are just roflstomping everyone and hold the entirety of EBG and zerg around with what seems like 50+ people all the time. People just get instagibbed and it is just a huge messy clusterkitten. I don’t really want to transfer off but I might have to if this mismatch keeps on going on.. Any T3-T4 servers out there with a comparable community to SOR and in a balanced bracket =/

Please stop with the last minute bandwagoners stuff. Many of the guilds that joined this week were invited to join our community. You say that when you joined SoR that you were welcomed with gifts, it’s time for you to pay that forward. welcome the new transfers into the community with gifts just like you were welcomed.

There are no classes they could add. They have all the necessary archetypes in the game. Adding any more classes would just be redundant and cause nothing but balance disparity. Any abilities the developers designs in the future will fit for at least one of the classes that are already in the game.

If anything, ArenaNet should design new weapon types and class skills that fill up holes and roles currently lacking.

Well, a few days ago I saw a thread in the Thief forum where someone was able to achieve permastealth by C&D a wall, which they couldn’t hurt so no Reveal debuff, and with enough ini regen they could easily maintain it.
Could’ve been that.

Someone should replicate this and bugreport it if that is the case. Doesn’t sound like something it is designed to do.

I’m curious to know where SoRs weak coverage is lately. US has always been strong and Oceanic (1am-8amPST) is much better with the help of our dedicated Choo/CDS leaders. How is our EU coverage? I’m oceanic so EU prime time is like 4am+ for me so I’ll never really see how we are going in that slot. The gaps are closing but I still notice our Oceanic coverage is only enough for 2 maps with maybe a harrassment party on the third.

Theory 1..I would (if I were to back up this theory) assume that they had multiple thieves who can throw down refuge in a cycle. My question to you: did you or anyone see the house thingy pop up? (that would be from a thief) if there wasn’t one present, and the dead were still rezzing, I would have no idea.

If I am being nit picky, however, how would you be able to run after someone who’s stealthed? You can’t see them so how can you run after them? ..blahblah neither here nor there.

Yeah, I kinda knew revive orbs couldn’t be used but threw it out as an option. Who knows what some people figure out can work.

About the house….yes we did see a house pop up but only a split second before the dead guys fully rezzed. It wasn’t there the whole time they were rezzing.

And as far as running after them….yes, you’re right we couldn’t see them but we could see where our damage numbers were falling and we kept running to those. Didn’t take too long to down them since we were throwing a LOT of AOE.

Reviving is quite fast when out of combat. You said you saw the refuge hut appear above them so there was definitely another thief still alive. using Shadow refuge he would have been able to revive a player completely with haste before the stealth wore off.

How your zerg sweep and 5man guard didn’t spot the remaining thief is beyond me. There are obvious telltale signs of a thief trying to remain in stealth. C&D on guards being the main one. Next time, instruct your 5man team to guard the NPCs near the dead bodies, guard those bones like a rabid dog and using aoe and knockbacks when you finally see the shadows appear or hear the CnD land. Elementalists, Guardians, Warriors and Engineers all have good AoE Knockbacks availble for situations like this and would make the best guard dogs.

This is only if there was no foul play. Hard to tell sometimes imo. As a thief, I dislike these kinds of stealth tactics, I wish we had more utility and could sub a few stealth skills for protection tbh.

I’m hoping that if they nerf damage on AoEs that they dramatically increase the target cap. If a single target attack does 10 damage to one target and they bring down AoE to 2 damage to 5 targets, it will be disappointing. However if they raise that cap to 10 or 20 targets it might be a worthy exchange and help to suppress zerging.

I’ve got 3 level 80s now, a 35 and numerous level 20 characters, I still havent done wrold completion. I haven’t even set foot in the western part of the world besides getting a few pets on my ranger. Caledon Forrest and Metrica Province are still waiting for me as are some of the 30-60 areas. I just play however my mood takes me at the time.

I love reading all these PvP purists accusing people that like a bit of PvE in WvW as being PvE players. WvW isn’t PvP, it’s WvW and the PvE content in WvW is there by design. Want pure PVP? play sPvP.
WvW is about territorial conquest, it involves both PvP elements AND PvE elements. Not one or the other. I spend 90% of my time in WvW killing players, taking camps, towers, keeps and merc camps, as long as the PvE content is relevant to WvW and contributes to the WvW the. it’s fine by me. Grub, Centaurs, Skritt currently do not, so they need to be refined so they do, not removed. I wvW because i love WvW, if all you want is to kill players, do it,mif you don’t like to PvP with PvE around you, the tournaments are thataway —->

I can’t remember if it was TC or Sbi you’re all red to me
I just remember having some really good fights vs a Guard that was going 1v3 using blind very well and I think they were using a shield and something else as the off set, with sword/focus main.
I did run into you last night with the candy can though. If I’m on my guardian you will see me with the punisher (2handed morning star) and energizer/shield set up from [gsch]. I’m running a 0/0/30/20/20 altruistic heal build at the moment but I have a sword just waiting to get used and was interested in the build.

The new profession needs to be a Soldier with direct opposite theme to the Guardian. There are 3 Adventurers and 3 Wizards but only 2 Soldiers. Of the Archetypes Adventurers and Wizards have 3 Themes based loosely around Good/Neutral/Naughty.
Soldiers have good and neutral but they are missing naughty.
Fire, Bleeding, Light, Blind, Weakness, Vulnerability are taken up by Warrior and Guardian. This leaves us with a dark themed Soldier with Confusion, Darkness, Water and Poison like abilities as the gap that needs filling.

The only Queues I have seen around 3am have been in Eternal Battlegrounds. We were lucky enough to have some new faces appear to help us during the oceanic period as well, and they are a most welcome addition to the SoR family. I still don’t believe we have enough off peak coverage for Tier 1 though, EB may have a queue but we were still only able to field an 8 man roaming group in TCBL last night.

Thanks goes out to PiNK and Co for giving us a real fight last night in TCBL, good fights all round.

A Third Soldier Class

The missing Soldier profession should be a dark offensive magic theme to compliment the non-magic warrior and the Light defensive magic Guardian.
It would also compliment the other Dark professions of Necro/Thief.
Using the Dark offensive magic theme you could go for something with:

  • Dark and Poison combo fields
  • Boon removal abilities
  • Confusion
  • Life Stealing
  • Chill
  • Water based healing
  • Medium base health (Guardians are low/Warriors high)

PvE is fine as long as it fits into the larger PvP picture. For instance LoL and Dota 2 are PvP games but the lane and jungle creeps add a layer of strategic depth to the game. I agree that things like the giant grub and the centaur/skritt areas should be removed since they don’t add to the PvP. But things like quaggans, dredge and ogres are fine (in fact adding more of them as well as more NPC upgrades for towers and keeps could be the answer to inaction during off-peak times and night capping).

I agree that PvE is fine when it actually benefits the big picture, but the quaggans, dredge, and ogres are worthless. I can solo their “help”, same for the look outs along the roads! They need more NPC’s be along the lines of vanilla WoW Alterac Valley 1.0. Ivus was a battle changer if you could get him up and fed. The same for reavers and wolf riders. Using them at the right time meant taking the next spawn point, but using them at the wrong time was just letting that work go to waste.

I’ll farm mobs for drops to spawn some ultra powerful NPC’s to aid in the fight. I’d also like to fight those same NPC’s.

Harpies could assault towers/garrisons by flying over the walls.

Skritt should steal supply from towers/garrisons

Sentry NPC’s should actually ping the map and show enemy dots.

quaggans could actually bring a lot more than 3 NPC’s and a veteran to assualt a garrison/tower.

Ogres could use their siege equipment to siege a tower/garrison.

Again assuming that all of the above are powerful enough to actually impact the enemies instead of be minor nuisances.

Other improvements- a wall on borderlands that prevents enemies from just storming up the map like it’s their territory. As it stands the servers borderlands are at a disadvantage when it should be their major advantage. Actually the only way enemies should get into your borderland is through a portal in EB after they take your garrison, but that’s a whole other post :P.

I agree, especially that Borderlands should only be accessible by unlocking a portal from their keep in EB. All mercenary and monster camps should be tougher, even Sentries should require at least 2 fully geared people to take down or 5 down-levelled. I really would love to see Skritt thieves stealing supply and Centaurs actually defeating and capturing supply camps. Every one of the NpC factions should have some relevance that means if ignored can become a thorn in your side and an advantage to the enemy that bribes or coerces them to action.

PvE is fine as long as it fits into the larger PvP picture. For instance LoL and Dota 2 are PvP games but the lane and jungle creeps add a layer of strategic depth to the game. I agree that things like the giant grub and the centaur/skritt areas should be removed since they don’t add to the PvP. But things like quaggans, dredge and ogres are fine (in fact adding more of them as well as more NPC upgrades for towers and keeps could be the answer to inaction during off-peak times and night capping).

I don’t think they should be removed, but I do think they need to be revamped so they are similar to Quaggan or Ogre/Dredge/Hylek camps.

The nature of Skritt and Centaurs are as thieves and raiders, so “capturing” Centaurs/Skritt could make them raid the supply of the nearby towers, camps and Garrison. How annoying would it be to have Skritt thieves sneaking into Garrison to steal supply (Like the event in Queensdale)?

Grubb and Ancient Spirit are currently useless as well but could be changed into an event that leads them to attack the nearest enemy structure (Wall or Door).

A dragon could also be an interesting mechanic if done right. For example there could be an event to “Wake” a sleeping dragon inside the EB jumping puzzle, but instead of being just PvE content, it would attack enemy keeps and Poach dolyaks for a meal on the way.

Any PvE Content must have some relevance to the WvW match, otherwise it is just a waste of developer resources that could be spent fixing the current issues in WvW.

I just hope they bring the Orbs back one day. Those battles were amazing, but they definitely need to be tweaked.

I’m surprised you could tolerate this kind of gameplay for more than 5 minutes.

Steal, C&D, Backstab.

I would of been bored in 30 seconds.

Most thieves did get bored of it and are now playing S/D and other Secret builds. It’s only the disgruntled rangers that rerolled that are running these backstab builds.

I went the opposite way, I got bored of how little options we had as thieves so I rolled a Sword Ranger.

Loving the small skirmish groups getting around in this match, there is some amazing skill on all servers.
