Mesmer portals are game breaking in WvWvW

I think the idea that an engineer has a “scan” ability, or a ranger has a “track” ability that can reveal hidden charecter via showing their footprint path (track) or a glowing trail (scan) on the map, and see where players went within the last say 60s or so showing where people ran to hide to. Putting them on par as perfect Mesmer Sweepers.

But it’s not portal that the person who is upset a mesmer hid they are upset they couldn’t find them reasonably easy, and the fix isn’t kill mesmer it’s what’s another viable option to have a CHANCE to find said mesmers also giving other classes the ability to contribute tot he war efforts.

This is good in theory, but the sad part is once you add a way to detect players such as scanning or tracking, a hack can be made that gives any player the ability to do it. Especially in a game like GW2 where it relies heavily on client side data. We saw this in Age of Conan where rangers could track on the mini-map, a hack was developed that allowed any class to activate the same mechanic and see all player dots on the minimap.

If GW2 didn’t rely on client side data so much, the game itself would suffer with major rubber banding and other latency orientated crap because the server determines where you are and everything around you instead of both client and server correlating the data.
(I probably could explain this better, I’m sure an expert will pop in to correct me if I haven’t explained it correctly)

SoM is brilliant combined with any condition damage. I use a glass cannon build in WvW but I still use caltrops, choking gas cloud and death blossom when I plan on staying engaged in a fight. The heals they give allow me to continue bouncing around from target to target without dying immediately, meaning more downed enemies that don’t rally off my corpse.

Still going to need a video, anyone can make it sound like it works on paper. But in actual practice the veterans know its just not possible. Such an insignificant amount of healing will never save you from a group of enemies, especially when every class can hit you for 2-5k+ sometimes 10k+, Much less knock you down. Much less immobilize and AOE/melee you/corrupt boon you while dagger storming. Also the evade on DB is extremely short, not even half the animation. Also, its not like it heals you on every tick of caltrops or bleed, only when it applies, so thats still very little.

Sorry bud I wont be posting any vids. If you’re interested test it, if not just ignore me. Wont affect my gameplay any.

Crossbow for thief and Guardian

I could see a crossbow for thief as a slow firing ranged with stealth option, blowout, piercing shot and a burning shot option. Crossbows were one of the first projectiles to have an advanced version of fire bolts, they used a cannister that would explode on impact iirc.

1. Aimed shot: Insert generic slow firing auto attack that causes vulnerability with projectile finisher here.
1.a) Sniping shot: Insert high damage stealth attack (less dmg than backstab) that deals vulnerability.
2. Firebolt: Shoot an incendiary bolt at your foe (dmg + burning)
3. Blunt shot: Shoot a blunt bolt at your foe (low dmg + blowout)
4. Piercing shot: Shoot a bolt that penetrates through multiple opponents.
5. Camoflague: Grants stealth for 3 seconds.

For those that feel the need for large scale coordinated content, have you considered getting your feet wet in WvW? I came from PvE raiding games like EQ2, WoW, Rift and I am finding WvW to be far superior to PvE raiding because of the human factor. This is only my opinion obviously but fighting against human opponents and adapting strategies to match or counter is so much more interesting and challenging and it has all the great aspects of raiding like:

  • noobs standing in fire
  • avoiding ground targeted AoE poo
  • collecting tokens to spend on gear
  • getting killed in two seconds when you fail to react (whether it be standing in fire or shooting at a reflect shield)
  • trying to coordinate a large group of people to accomplish a common goal
  • thieves dying when they fail at their uber move in melee

It’s just like raiding but your enemy isn’t scripted AI and theres no gear treadmill or entry barrier.

It should especially be done for the OH. While I don’t like being “forced” to dual-wield weapons (or use a 2 hander) with any profession, it particularly bugs me on the thief because they’re so obviously built around it when they shouldn’t be.

I agree with this. The Thief class was supposed to be just that, a Thief. Not an Venomous Assassin or a Shadow-Jumping X-Man.

I really wish that I could have played a non-dual wielding, non-poison using, non-invisible using Thief. A dagger or short sword in one hand, and an empty hand to poke my enemy in the eye if he gets too close. I’m tired of being typecasted into a super-stealth-ninja-assassin-dual wielding-one-shotting-hand-of-doom, I just want to be a cowardly scumbag with a shiv and a pocket full of dirty tricks.

You could have a profession called The Bogun that has a stubby in one hand and a durry in the other. Special attacks include:

  • flickin’ the durry mate: Flick your cigarette (durry) into the enemies face.
  • Call Shazza: summons a Bogun chick that berates your enemy with foul language unbefitting of a lady
  • She’ll be ’right: Ignores condition effects (but they still do damage at the end of duration)
  • Bludgin (not to be confused with bludgeon): Sit around and do nothing while taking all the credit
  • Fangin it: grants swiftness

You know, I am no aussie… but I would like to see a drop-bear in game…

I don’t think the gaming community are ready to take on something as dangerous as a dropbear. They can’t even handle backstabbing invisible thieves, a dropbear would be far more dangerous.

[Suggestion] Destructible bridges

in WvW

Posted by: Elthurien.8356

Elthurien.8356

Why not just take the camp, and strip the supply.

The supply line is just one aspect of it. A destroyed bridge also cuts reinforcements to the keep, adds an additional choke point to a keep assault and gives the defenders an extra supply drain if they need to repair it. It also gives the defenders an advantage in that they can destroy the bridge to deter an invading force or force them to attack a different gate. Imagine if the south bridge of Hills keep was destructible, making the north gate the only way in or out for supply, reinforcements or even invaders.

Elthurien.8356

This suggestion is for future content ideas, whether for content patch or expansion.

There is one thing missing that I would really love to see in WvW one day, Destructible bridges. It would need a new map or a change to existing maps to be of any worth, but if there were several supply routes that could only be traversed via a bridge, with impassable cliffs on either side of the destination this would be a great addition to objective control.

Controlling the bridge would be just as important as holding the supply camp and would add a third phase to defending/attacking the supply routes to a keep (phase one is the supply, two is the sentry) Invaders would want to blow up bridges forcing keep defenders to use up valuable supply to repair in order to reopen supply routes.

Clusterbomb Arrow is terribly slow

in Thief

Posted by: Elthurien.8356

Elthurien.8356

It was slowed down because the damage output and the ability to spam it made it far more powerful than any other ability. In the beta weekends you could literally wipe out a melee group by mashing 2 and stacking 25 bleeds almost instantly (with detonation) or do 5-7k crits. The timing was necessary, however if you want to see something cool, get into voip with 4 other thieves and time your cluster bombs when defending a keep. Count out 3…2…1…fire in vent and watch those door bashers melt under 35k worth of combined crits.

How to handle thieves

in Guardian

Posted by: Elthurien.8356

Elthurien.8356

My main is a Thief but I’m levelling up a guardian at the moment because I played a Warrior Priest throughout my time in WAR. One vital piece of information that many people don’t realise is that Thieves only have one stability skill and it’s on their Dagger Storm elite.

A thief’s biggest weaknesses are knockdown/blowouts, and immobilisation. The Guardian is probably the best equipped profession to counter a Thief, using things like retaliation, aegis, blowout, immobilise and knockdowns, and even blinds. Heavy toughness will reduce a fully buffed backstab critical to around 7k, non-critical will be around 3k (I have done extensive testing on these numbers, a full combo of mug/cnd/bs will average around 10k on heavy golem for the perfect storm combo).

With timing you can completely negate 2 out of 3 of the backstab combo by hitting F4 after your initial Aegis is soaked up by mug or cnd. As soon as that backstab is negated you have a couple of seconds to react and trap him before revealed is down, but even if he can stealth again, he wont be able to pull off the big combo for another 35-45 seconds (Assassin Sig and steal will be on cool down). This is the time you need to trap him with either a knockdown, immobilise or blowout, keeping retaliation up as much as possible so that he damages himself trying to damage you.

I Hope this adds some insight to how they work, I’m looking forward to mauling a few thieves on my new guardian

I was melted in seconds but it was great fun regardless. I have no problem with portal bombing, it’s a great tactic that always keeps you on your toes. Whether we lose this round or not doesn’t matter one bit because I’m having a great time fighting a losing battle. I just wish more people could more optimistic about the game, facing a superior or even equal foe, whether it be numbers, levels or tactics is what makes the game fun for me.

The only thing I don’t like is not getting a random chance of dungeon pieces to drop. I don’t like saving up tokens to buy cool looking gear from a vendor, it feels disconnected and artificial. Personally I would prefer to have a blowout on steal instead of damage, this would kill the current mug/cnd/backstab combo as a blowout will place them out of melee range, but it would still be a useful utility as a set up for group play (Shadowstep behind the target and then steal/bo them back into your team for example). For those that are unfamiliar with blowout, it is the one that knocks the target back, Guardian’s Banish (Hammer), Engineers Big Ol’Bomb, Elementalists updraft.

I was one of the first people to crunch the numbers on it after the 15% nerf and found that it was only slightly better than auto attack. I’m sick of it. It’s never going to stop either.

Once these oxygen thieves are finished complaining about backstab, they will move onto Clusterbomb, then Dancing Dagger, ,Dagger Storm, then Mug, then Cloak and Dagger, then Caltrops, then Unload, then they will find something else to kitten about, when all the damage abilities have been reduced to rubble, they will undoubtedly complain about Signet of Shadows, Venom Sharing, or some other rare ability that we manage to work into a build when we have nothing left.

glass cannon P/P unload is better than pistol whip for single target takedowns anyway. Similar damage, at range, with no root and you still get daze from headshot and smoke from BP. All the pistol whip nerf did for me was force me into range when I’d rather be in melee. I never saw the attraction in uber stealth or backstab builds, I don’t want to see backstab nerfed either but it wont affect me in the least. If our burst is nerfed more then we are going to need more than just poison and bleeding for conditions. I would love to see burning and confusion added to our capability.

I just want to point out that if you are going to suggest weapon sets and skills, it’s best to make sure they don’t overlap with other professions. New ideas that aren’t already being used will generally get a closer look and a higher chance of actually making it into the game.

ie; A ranged attack that does damage and applies vulnerability is just a dual pistol body shot, why would the developers at Arena net put resources into making a rifle ability do the same thing when it’s already there on a pistol?

Ideas and suggestions are great, but if you want the developers to take you seriously, I would suggest looking over the non-Thief profession weapon skills first to make sure you don’t just write down something that already exists. Some professions do have similar abilities to others, but there is usually some kind of flavour variation that makes it unique to that profession.

Example Torch dual skill for the Thief:
Torch
3. Slash and Burn: Slash at your foe then set them on fire.
Initiative: 5
Damage: 252
Burning (6s): 504 Damage
Range: 130
