Being fairly rewarded for adventuring, exploring, doing dungeons and killing monsters is older than Computer RPGs. Ever since Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson conjured up the idea of dungeon delving adventurers have been rewarded for their efforts. It is the staple requirement for all RPGs not just Online Computer RPGs.

Things that bother me about GW2 currently is the anti-farm code as it severely reduces a crafters ability to gather their own materials. Lazy crafters will buy from the trader, but active crafters that enjoy gathering are denied this right.

Boss drops in dungeons: This is a second dislike of GW2s current system. I absolutely despise saving up tokens. Dungeon bosses should have a loot table and a generous coin drop, not because I want the game to be a loot treadmill or because I want to farm gold, but because I’m playing an adventurer in search of treasure, not a person gathering tokens to purchase items from a vendor. It completely destroys the sense of adventure. I seriously have no incentive to do dungeons just for repair bills and salvage trash.

Would be cool if they could scale as well, ie; Only have two friends availabe, dungeon scales down difficulty to the amount of people inside.

Elthurien is derived from early english history, Urien of Cambria and Aethel which I believe comes from Anglo-Saxon etymology ie; Aethelwulf, Aethelbrecht. I believe Aethel/Adel/Ethel means Noble, so Aethelwulf would mean Noble Wolf. I originally used the name Aethelurien in an old SSI AD&D gold box game and over the years it has evolved into elthurien. In GW2 my character is called Elthuzar as homeage to the god
of war Balthazar.

"no trinity" and melee bosses...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Elthurien.8356

There still is a trinity in GW2 it’s just not the same trinity as most of us know it. Control, Support & Damage are very similer to Tank, Heal & Damage. Everyone is capable of doing all three roles, some better than others. In an early post somebody mentioned a group if 5 Warriors, that is quite possible. A warrior can range, heal, support, melee and control with their skillset. Healing through shouts, supporting through banners, controlling, range and melee through weapon sets.

Possible Solution to the Current WvWvW Controversy?

The matchmaking system can’t work itself out until transfers are locked. By leaving transfers open they are prolonging the matchup system from doing its intended job. You only need to read the posts on these forums to read of the server exodus’ after they get stomped.

I actually think WARs system could work here because the classes are better balanced.

The problem I see with mobile siege equipment: Mesmers (I play one in addition to my Warrior, so you know)

Build 6 mobile flame rams. Stack them all on top of a mesmer portal. Mesmer runs up to keep door and lays down the portal exit. Door goes down in 30 seconds. =/

So set a condition on Siege that they cannot go through mesmer portals.

The idea has merit. I don’t tend to suffer the apathy many other players do when the score is separated by a large margin. The bigger psychological impact I find is seeing all territory in control of one colour. When all you own is one supply camp, you find people tend to attempt an attack on the nearest tower or keep and fail hard because that is where the biggest defence will be congregating. The other situation that happens is the losing side will raid supply camps in a circular pattern and watch the winning side just back-cap it all in an endless cycle of kiss and chase.

Charr, Sylvari and Asuran Siege.
Charr siege consisting of their steampunk technology: Sawblade throwers, Bomb-Lobbers, Tanks (Mobile Ballista).
Asura siege consisting of laser pew pew type stuff: Energy cannons, Rams with energy shields to protect vs projectiles, Plasma throwers.
Sylvari siege consisting of plant based attacks: A Giant seed turret that launches poison or confusion pods, Ancients that act like siege golems but have different tactics, Mushroom defenses that cause blind, confusion or poison to enemies in PBAoE.

Oh I saved the best for last…
BATTLE DOLYAKS
With room for upto three players, the battle Dolyak has a driver and two gunner positions. Two mounted heavy crossbows or Small cannons on the side, the driver/rider has access to Dolyak charge, stomp and Ram

I think people just need to accept that in a game with three sides, where PvP happens (or can happen) 24/7, two of those teams are going to lose. yeah but with skills and stats people would want to keep pvping the whole point to people playing these mmos it to better their character increasing stats is nothing like gear we all learned that gear makes it way over powered compaired to specing into stats look at daoc wasnt gear based but had the rr system to better you’re stats till toa toa made it gear based and allowed crappy players to be good and like wow. wow was totally gear based and cause unbalance but if you do rr points to increase stats or get new skills it wont make much of a difference sorry if this sounds confusing but think about it..

If there was a new trait line that was only available at 80 and only progresses with WvW it could offer stat increases as well as major/minor traits tailored specifically to WvW. Just an idea.

Like I said in another thread, I’m up for “screwing” Oceanic players if that what it takes to save WvW for North American (and European) players.

The combined NA and EU player base dwarfs anyone in Australia/New Zealand. ArenaNet will do what they have to do to save this huge amount of paying customers.

I know it sucks, but that’s capitalism.

Sorry to break this to you but Oceanic/Asian population outnumbers you. 2/3 of the world population is in China and India. Thats not counting Thailand, Singapore, Japan, Korea, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Japan etc

What rubbish is this about paying customers? the game is buy2play.

Learn to accept that you wont always win. Thats what I do and I’m having a ball being an Aussie on a low Oceanic populated World. Fort Aspenwood was beating my server by over 100k last time I checked but I’m still having an awesome time fighting them.

I just wish these people would accept that it’s okay to be fighting a losing battle. There are some nights where i wish i could be playing with my Australian and Singaporean buddies on the top servers but I like my server despite the lack of oceanic players. I like being the underdog (Aussie Battler) with no Queue as soon as I get home from
work and plenty of people to kill. My server isnt in the top ten so I doubt I would even have the priviledge of fighting you guys anytime soon. But again, the issue is people cant take losing against high pop offpeak servers. I dont mind so much.

I did suggest in another thread that if your server has completely wipe another off the map, then it might be in the best interest of all three parties if you let them take a
little bit back just to keep the battle flowing. It will probably be taken as a cry for charity but honestly, it’s not fun holding everything and having nothig to fight either as i’ve been on both sides of that situation. If the dominating server has enough players to wipe a map, they have enough to crush anyone that they decide to toy with in this regard. either way, I hope they don’t put any hardfixes in to limit our prime time. The best solution would be to offer incentives for non-allied Oceanic guilds to fill out the other servers (like keeping guild progress). I would love to have more Oceanics (not just aussie) players on Sanctum of Rall but thats upto you guys, I’m not going to beg or recruit. All I can do is say theres room for you here if your looking for a challenge.

And like the above poster mentioned, a lot of the “nightcapping” happens after us Aussies go to bed. I’ve stayed up till 1am some weeknights to and wome up the next day to see everything gone.m 1am my time is 8am PDT

Fix to night capping

in WvW

Posted by: Elthurien.8356

Elthurien.8356

Fix to night capping: organize people on your server who play late at night to hold your territory.

It’s a much better solution than complaining and waiting for someone else to hand you something.

It’s just as boring when you are completely dominating at nighttime. I hope that the server pairing gets better in the future, but I can’t imagine that all server imbalances will be squared away.

The easy fix for this is if your nightkrew are getting bored because nobody will fight them, pull back a bit, let them take a small portion of the map and then bait them into fighting you elsewhere. I’m sure all three sides want to fight each other more than not fighting at all and giving a little territory in order to have more fun whilst still dominating the scoreboard might be beneficial for all three sides. Then if they start getting a bit too brave for their boots crush them into the uncap.

The only thing i dislike about pistol whip is the fact that it has no cd. So you can get away from a couple of them but eventually they will get you.

The cooldown is the initiative cost. Unlike heartseeker, you can only use Pistol Whip twice and then you have no initiative for anything else. Use pistol whip with quickness and you have no endurance to get out safely.

There are traits and skills to mitigate the loss of endurance and you can get an extra pw with 15 points in trickery but doing that sacrifices a utility slot and traits that could be put to better use

Maybe if there was a trait that increased range by 33% with shortbow in shadow arts (because thats where the +5% dmg shortbow trait is).

If they could switch attunements like elementalist that provides different skills based on attunement and weapon sounds fun. Like a Battlemage from Elderscrolls or a Paragon from GW.

I would like to see a muskateer type profession, with rifle, pistols, sword, dagger and torch. Acrobatic and medium armor like the Thief but not steal, poison or stealth. A muskateer would be similar to a Guardian x Thief. No magical rainbows, poisons or butterflies (I’m lookong at you mesmer). Oh and an ability to use a single weapon with no offhand that isnt pointless but actually enhances the mobility.

I have always thought the word grind is associated with something repeatitive that you don’t enjoy. If I found anything to be a grind I simply avoid it.

That being said, there are some things in GW2 that I consider a grind and subsequently avoid. Some examples of this would be Dungeons and their token rewards, personal story quests and sPvP. These are a grind to me because I dislike token systems, I prefer RNG drops when it comes to doing something for a loot reward. Other people love
the things that I consider grind. I find things fun that others consider grind. I love
crafting, I love WvW even though they have the same token farm that dungeons do, I enjoy it because each time I go in there the experience is different (for dungeons it’s not imo).

Arenanet said from the beginning that there would be no raiding style progression, no gear progression or Holy Trinity combat in the way standard themepark MMOs implement them. They delivered on what they said they would and would not do.

i would like to see a WvW trait line and skills progress similar to RR. Not stat increases or gear. Stat increase is similar progression to gear as it increases overall power, as this kind of progression tends to widen the gap between new players I dont think this is the road we want to go down. With traits and skills the progression is still there but it isnt as evident or overpowering giving more options to customize yourself toward WvW. I wouldnt be against costumes being exclusive to RRs as well in a similar fashion to glory ranks.

edit I definitely like the idea of a slow drawn out progression as mentioned where one rank could take months to achieve at the later ranks.

At level 80 I find that the karma exotics are the easiest to obtain but their stats are not what I desire in some cases. Because of this I tend to mix WvW with exploring/farming PvE. I don’t feel that I need everything in a week so I dont set this as an expectation. I’m taking my time gathering badges from WvW for weapons and farming specific materials for crafting the gear I want. I’m enjoying myself and I think it is because I set my expectations in a realistic fashion. I could stress out and try to get all exotics by the end of the week and make it feel like a grind or I can enjoy the journey as a task to achieve among numerous other tasks and goals. I choose to enjoy it

edit: I forgot to mention that I craft as a preferred method because I can get the stats that I want. As a Thief that doesnt use conditions I focus on Valkyrie and Beserker sets to balance high crit, power, precision and vitality. Many items that are karma or token farmed are healing, toughness and condition, which doesnt suit my style.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I’ve currently logged around 250hours in GW2 (not a boast just for perspective), in those 250 hours:

  • I have not completed my personal story
  • I do not have a full exotic set
  • I have not set foot inside sPvP
  • I only have around 48% world completion
  • I have done 1 Dungeon (That’s right, just one)
  • I have been 80 since about 2 days after launch (not early access)
  • I have two crafts at 400 and intend on having at least three more on the same character.

I have so much endgame available to me I sometimes can’t decide where to start.

These reviews are rubbish. They obviously expected endgame to be a repeatitive Raid/loot treadmill.

Restricting servers by region wont work. My guild is primarily US based with around 20 Oceanics and a dozen or so EU. Restricting by region will leave us homeless and unable to play with the community we have been a part of for close to a decade.

How do you propose restricting servers by region when there are only EU and US servers?
What about international guilds?
I am a member of a large international guild which isn’t from my region, restrictig by region would mean that I can no longer play on the same server as my guild, a guild which has become part of my family.
There is no way this can be balanced without screwing over someone. My server is very low populated offpeak, I like being the underdog and I like having the opportunity to play with my buddies in the US and EU.

Solution to night capping/overwhelming numbers

in WvW

Posted by: Elthurien.8356

Elthurien.8356

I have a love/hate relationship with WvW mainly due to being an Aussie on a server with low oceanic population. All the fun is happening while I’m at work or sleeping but when I log on during my prime time we are usually out numbered by one server out of the two. I say it is a love/hate issue because I love having more enemies to fight but hate it because once all the towers and keeps are taken all that is left for me to do is roam for stragglers. Defending towers and keeps with my current offpeak population is
near impossible because the enemy zerg will just go cap something undefended or steam roll through our defense with superior numbers. I would never consider joining one of the “oceanic” servers because that is just adding to the problem.

Well, truth is- no point in doing dungeons anymore.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Elthurien.8356

Elthurien.8356

In previous MMOs I used to love running them over and over again because each boss dropped a rare with a unique skin or stats. Then developers started introducing tokens or badges to dungeons and RNG became a thing of the past. Ever since then I have hated doing dungeons. Call me shallow if you must, I admit I love doing dungeons for loot (mainly for costumes) but I only enjoyed RNG drops for the gambling rush. Repeating dungeons for guaranteed tokens is a horrible grind in my eyes that replicates the struggles of real life. I play games to escape and enjoy the rush or high I get from a rare drop, I get no rush whatsover when I finally collect enough tokens and go… ’I’m glad that’s over’.

For the sake of a well known example i will use WoWs vanilla content vs WoWs later
badge content. My favorite armor set in WoW was the blue dungeon set. Each piece dropped in a different dungeon with only a minute chance that my piece would
drop. I loved doing these dungeons and when I finally finished the set I had already
surpassed its stats with better items. even though I had better gear, that one 8 piece set was still my favorite.

So far GW2 is doing everything in its power to stop farming, whether it be gold or items or trophies. Is it a ploy to get people to spend more real money for gems? idk.

i could counter the arguement and say WvW players that want 100% map completion have to spend 98% of it in PvE content where they are forced to play with other people that they would rather kill. 100% map completion is an achievment that doesnt discriminate between PvP or PvE as it requires the player to participate in both PvP and PvE to achieve. If it requires you to go into a WvW zone to complete then it isn’t solely a PvE achievment. Nobody is forcing you to do anything, it is your misconception that you feel the need that you HAVE to do this achievement without achieving it as it has been intended to be achieved.

I have no problem as a melee Thief in dungeons, PvE or WvW. I use my utilities
to blind, stun and daze to completely avoid damage, If I get aggro I take measures to lose aggro and continue to melee while controlling my incomming damage with smoke and avoidance. Melee is more challenging but it is far more enjoyable experience because of this.

Gentlemen, this is how you play a melee class. Take heed, especially if you’re playing thief. He knows what’s up.

too bad blind and CC doesn’t really work on champions and above, and even the instance trash can oneshot you in melee.

nice theory tho for everything up to veteran (which you can usually solo, so…)

The OP made no mention of champions or dungeons. I still melee in dungeons, even on bosses (most of them). It’s a matter of timing, if I pull aggro I dodge out or drop aggro with smoke or stealth. I then switch to a ranged attack until somebody else gets aggro then I switch back to melee and engage because my melee attacks do more damage. I don’t know why I’m bothering to explain myself though, play how you want to play.

I’m sorry if I came across as an egotistical kitten I was only trying to help melee players that might not have grasped how melee works in GW2. I don’t see the need for insults though. I guess I didn’t quite grasp the Point of the OP. Back on Topic, many players will gravitate to whatever play style offers the least resistance, in GW2 this is quite obviously anything with a ranged build. I hope melee is never ever made easier but I would welcome ranged difficulty to be increased. If that means mob AI needs tweaking so Mobs switch to ranged when they are crippled or immobilized then that sounds great to me. Melee is a challenge, that’s why I enjoy it, I still switch to shortbow or dual pistols on occasion but I would seriously hate the game if I was always forced into using ranged weapons.

Steal is fine the way it is. It would be better if there was an F2 steal that shadowsteps a thief away from the target to compliment melee and ranged playstyles though. Want to get into melee? find the closest enemy hit F1 and engage them. Need to get out of melee? hit F2, steal a ranged skill and shadowstep away.

Firstly I would like to see Anet label some of the lower tiered servers with an Oceanic tag so new players/guilds from SEAsia/Asia and AUS/NZ start filling in the gaps.

Secondly, I would like to see uncaps (home bases) with permanent indestructable siege that can clear zergs from the spawn.

Third, I would like to see Tower Lords and Keep Lords scripted better to provide more challenge and also scale in difficulty relative to the players attacking and defending, similar to Dynamic events.

Fourth, less money sinking and more reliance on supply.

Fifth, Siege being harder to destroy by player abilities. Siege should be countered by siege, not retaliation and lava font.

Sixth, Orbs giving point advantage, not stat/ability advantage.

I agree with the above posters/OP. The world dragon fights in GW2 are completely underwhelming with mass Hit points and very little strategy or fun. So far there is only one boss fight that I have truly enjoyed and it was the Asura Starter zone. That should be the bare minimum I would expect of a boss. Remove the majority of auto attack crud, add phased combat stages and heavy hitting attacks (with tells), give bosses attacks that force us to change tactics. To use a world dragon as an example, a
Dragon has a devastating breath attack that focuses on ranged players, but the dragon has a hard time focusing on those attacking its belly. attacking the belly is
subject to being stomped, but the dragon cant bite, breath or tail slap them. Add an Air

Relying on RNG drops seems contradicting when compared to other gathering techniques. Utilise the harvesting sickle tool for cloth and create a new slot for a skinning tool.

Balthazar and Melandru temples are bugged on Sanctum of Rall. Grenth and Arahs are working though. I just wish that all of the zones were endgame zones, where
karma and loot are scaled to level. I know it wouldn’t work as an 80 would be unable to gather lower tiered trophies if this were the case but it would be great if the T6 trophies and Gathering nodes were in every zone, not just the level 80 zones. I would love to have more reasons to take my level 80 back to the lower level zones besides just karma and world completion.
