Hopefully Thieves will have more weapon options in the first expansion.
I would like to see on or more of the following:

  • Sword offhand – with dual skill for pistol and sword main hand
  • Torch offhand – with Pistol, Dagger and Sword main hand
  • Rifle – For a 1200 Range option
  • Staff – Abilities as a Thief Acrobat (Bo-Staff/Quarterstaff)

If WvW wasn’t meant to be fair then why do level 2 players get bolstered to 80?
I’m not against some additional form of progression, I’m just against a specific portion of progression working like AoCs AA, Warhammers RR 80-100, Rifts PA, DAOC RR that is just another arms race that will completely negate a new player wanting to participate. Come up with a system that doesn’t make a top tiered RR player indestructible against a fresh 80 in masterwork gear and you might be onto something. Regurgitating a past mechanic from a dead game is not the answer.

People that want to PWN No0bs have plenty of MMOs to choose from.

Lets make crazy ideas for WvW.

Battleyak
A slow moving Dolyak that holds four harness locations covering frontal, flanks and rear positions. The front position steers and directs the Yak, while the two flank positions hold gatling guns and the rear position drops a variety of land mines.

  • The Battleyak is slower than a regular Dolyak and prone to panic when attacked.
  • The driver has the option to steer, direct and charge and can damage doors.
  • The Flanking positions have a rapid fire supression shot and volley shot aoe.
  • The rear position has a variety of caltrops, glue bombs and landmines.

This has been an epic match thats for sure. I also consider us lucky that we have only had one orb hacking incident this whole week. I don’t hold the actions of one despicable individual against all Yaks. Our match has been legit and our scores show each servers determination to win. Fighting TOG on one server and ZOS on the other has been memorable, I’m sure I’ll mark a few more guilds down before the week is over.

Icecat we have plenty of players in WvW during Oceanic time and we are going quite well ever since we fought back against Darkhaven.

FL, I have no problem with you guys at all. Like I said earlier, I haven’t seen much of you in WvW when I’m online but the guys that are online are good fun to play with. I did hear rumours but that is neither here nor there, I can only form an opinion of what I see and the guys I have played with were fine and we had a good laugh last night. Lets move on from this and turn our blades out not in.

RR stat and ability increases are identical to a gear treadmill without the gear. There needs to be an end point where players are on equal footing. This is exotic gear and it’s already in game. If players were any more powerful than an 80 in full exotics this game would become niche and lose a ton of people.

WvW specific titles and non-statistic or skill based progression is fine, anything that increases power factor beyond the current game is bad.

Lets make crazy ideas for WvW.

Siege ladders and siege towers GO
The Charr actually have siege towers set up in some of their maps, they look pretty cool.
Say 200 Supply to set one up, moves as slow as a golem and works like a short range mesmer portal. Can be countered by AEing the kitten out of the exit and entry point and of course destroying the tower itself via ballista or cat

There is so much fail in this thread. I love the guy with the 80 warrior, 80 Elementalist and 80 engineer, nice try sunshine I know how all three of those classes can counter me but I’ll never tell If we told you every counter to our abilities we would be useless, Thieves are good because we keep these hidden treasures a secret. We know our weaknesses which is why you never see Thieves complaining about thieves

To be honest I’m not bothered if SoR doesn’t compete with the top servers like HoD because the last three weeks of WvW have been great. As long as there is competition at all hours of the day without one server completely dominating it really doesn’t matter to me what our rank is. I’m here to kick kittens and chew bubblegum and I just ran out of gum.

FWIW, Thieves will always be a target of complaints due to things inherent to their archetype: stealth, movement, burst. It seems that some players just don’t want to learn how to counter us.

Thief/Rogue hate has been around since the beginning of MMORPGs. As long as I can remember it has always been the light armoured ranged players that complain too.

I’m switching to Sword/Daggers tonight. Going to see how well it can go without using flanking strike and focusing on C&D, Slash chain, Dancing daggers and inf strike, with second set of pistol/dagger for mobility.

I completely agree with the original poster. The root of the problem is the Assassin’s Signet increased damage with might stacks on top boosting it to ridiculous damage levels

Nerf to Assassins Signet in 3..2..1

The problem is people don’t like to lose and the squeaky wheel gets the grease.
The problem isn’t just Assassins Signet, it is Assassins Signet combined with a Tier 1 major trait in critical strikes that grants 5 stacks of might for each signet used then thrown up against people that don’t like to lose, are used to thieves being nerfed because of games like WoW, and know if they complain loud enough they will get their own way.

1200 range on either shortbow or pistols would not be out of line given our complete lack of weapon options. Dual Pistols would probably be better balanced as it is purely single target, but it makes more sense to have it on Shortbow. Ranger shortbow is 1200 range AND they have more melee weapon options than we do AND they have pets. Warriors have 1200 range AND more weapon options AND more health and armor AND they are just as dangerous in melee with knockbacks, charge and immobilises.

We just had a significant nerf to pistol whip, backstab and dagger storm are surely on the horizon given the QQ on these forums so why shouldn’t we get better range if we are getting hammered by the nerf bat in melee? For those that say we dont need it because we have stealth…. so do mesmers but they have 1200 range options too. At least a mesmer can dual wield swords.

Hills keep has some good hiding places for mesmers. I caught two especially sneaky ones last night and my team punted them off a cliff. I’m not going to share the hiding spot though, I’m going to tell our mesmers instead.

Yaks just doesn’t have much of a morning time crew. our night/primetime crew is kinda small as well but incredibly organized so it makes for a good matchup.

Darkhaven spurred SoR into action, it’s as simple as that. We are currently matched up against two very well organised servers and the scoreboard is still close. Not as close as our match last week but still very close. We learned from our mistakes last match and adapted ourselves. These adaptations are keeping us from being steamrolled this week and it is thanks to Darkhaven that we learned to guard what we capture. When you guys go up against Northern Shiverpeaks or Yaks Bend next week you better be prepared. They are extremely formidable servers with a heavy defence strategy. Be prepared to place plenty of siege to defend and spend plenty of money on upgrading, there is no room for complacency in the next rank. Surprisingly there is only one reported hacking incident in our match this week which is great imo.

I’m not here to gloat or cause drama, I thoroughly enjoyed fighting your lot in our previous matches and felt It would be a friendly gesture to warn you that our match last week was like childs play compared to this week. If you want a challenge, you’re going to love it. If you prefer capping unguarded objectives or zerging small unorganised servers you’re going to be in for a shock. Me personally, I’m loving every minute in this match, the opponents just keep getting tougher and we need to adjust our strategy at every turn.

What annoys me more than non-thieves QQing about thieves are Thieves using alternate builds that use stealth/rendering builds and call it more skillful than sword/pistol builds. Make the other weapon sets worth changing to so we have a variety of options, I don’t want to play a stealthy backstab thief or a condition build thief, I want to play an in your face sword thief that uses headshot, Black powder and pistol whip to control and kill without hiding like a kitten. I would have played a sword/dagger thief but flanking strike is too unreliable.

There are no treaties that I’m aware of. Generally speaking if one server has more assets they are usually targeted by both servers without the need to form treaties. I know I still attack any red player whether they are from YB or NSP. I’ve played with ZoS and TOG in other games so I tend to enjoy picking friendly fights with them purely because I recognise their tag. No malice involved, no treaties just good ol fashioned PvP fun

Backstab, stealth and dagger storm are currently the most complained about Thief abilities. I am expecting backstab and dagger storm to be hit next.

I’ve never succeeded in pulling off a backstab higher than 9k against an 80 with the signet unless the target is below 50% health. This is in WvW with a mix of berserker and valkyrie gear and berserker weapons. These 14k backstabs are boosted by might as well as the signet and are quite difficult to time and land.

I wish Thieves didn’t have to be cheesy but we adapt to the hand we’ve been dealt. Even with Pistol whip being nerfed, expect to see more Dagger/Pistol builds showing up to nuke targets and fall back on blinding powder and stealth.

I can’t say I’ve seen FL in WvW as a group, only 2 or 3 roaming. I guess you guys aren’t online much after midnight. I do remember seeing a couple of your members saying how bad our server was in team chat and generally being abusive, maybe that’s why you’re having problems. Like I said though, I don’t recall any overly active presence of FL that stands out. Most of the guilds in WvW when I’m online are HF, WU, EPIC and VIG and we work together well, our offpeak commanders work together and share the responsibility.

I’d much rather play with the same mechanics as every other profession on my Thief, but some genius decided to make one class able to spam abilities and it just happened to be the only class I wanted to play. With such a terrible selection of weapons, low armor, low health and now we don’t have any damage to make up for it. We have little else left to do but headshot spam and kite. Might be fine for sPvP but it sucks for the rest of the game.

It’s such a shame that these little sPvP arenas affect so much more around it, the WvW, the PvE and the Dungeons all suffer because of this eSport pipedream.

If we had 25-30k health like a warrior and a wonderful weapon selection I would have no issue with Backstab and Pistol whip nerfs. Unfortunately warrior gets to be the balanced profession and everything else is rotten apples.

It’s not the end of all thieves but it has reduced our viable weapon sets.
We have 6 weapon combinations… note I say combinations.
D/D, D/P, P/D, P/P
S/P, S/D
SB
That’s six weapon sets. Out of those six, the top four are virtually identical apart from the dual skill. They provide the same options in slots 1-2 and slot 4-5. So effectively we only really have 4 weapon options and 2 half options. You can remove S/D from those options because flanking strike is broken, and now you can remove S/P from those options because pistol whip is useless. So you now only have the option of going dagger/dagger, or shortbow.

at 250% crit dmg, 15% means, 37.5% less dmg if every single hit from PW crits compared to what it was before. S/P is officially off limits to glass cannons. ;P

I can confirm that my crits have been reduced by at least 33%. 37% sounds about right.

Hold Arenanet responsible. Not the individual. How do you even know that it was Izzy that made this decision? I don’t agree with the nerf either, I am a Sword/Pistol thief myself and I’m furious at the change, but I’m not going to make personal attacks on a developer, that is childish and quite frankly, just as stupid as the nerf itself. I will quite happily vote with my wallet if ANet continue to balance the game for sPvP when WvW and PvE are my interest.

Were those numbers taken from the combat log or were you just watching damage. The damage shown over mobs’ heads is not the damage per strike, but the entire chain.

Please tell me Pistol Whip was overpowered again. From that one example you can see which numbers are critical hits and which aren’t. Pistol Whip had 3/9 total critical hits, auto attack had 2/3. Pistol whip is useless now, I may as well auto attack and daze spam.
Using Steady weapons:

53 + (52 × 8) = 469
Auto Attack
Slice/Slash/Crip Strike: 123 +123 + 200 = 446
Why would anyone spend 5 Initiative on this ability now when they can auto attack?

A smart player would ignore the immobilise and use a stun breaker on the incoming pistol whip. Unfortunately there are too many players that would rather complain about things than learn how to adapt to them.

I’m furious with this change because it is a flat-out knee jerk reaction to QQ with zero compensation by spreading damage across other abilities. I expected ANet to be better than this.

You guys do know that “Buying” a commander book is essentially about $500 US Dollars. If anyone actually spent real money on it I would be surprised. Most of the commanders I have seen on my server were chosen by their guild and the money donated by players within the guild. The commander Icon is definitely lacking in features, and is honestly not worth anywhere near 100g. What do you get from it?

  • An icon so people (Including spys) can see where you are on the map
  • A feature that allows you to see how much supply your squad members are carrying
  • A feature that allows you to mark rally points, attack points, defence points on the map so members of your squad can see it.

That’s it. I definitely agree that it could use a lot more features. How commanders choose to use their features is completely up to them. Many self entitled players seem to think that the commanders are their to serve them, go where they want, and they follow them around expecting some magic event to happen. Hot tip, some commanders use it to coordinate guild only, some commanders use it when they want to attack an objective or defend something that they feel needs defending. Many commanders don’t have much experience (the game has only been out for 5 weeks).

I was asked today by some random person why I wasn’t using my commander feature. I wasn’t using it because I was running a 5 man group and didn’t want a zerg chasing my every move, I wanted to move with precision and without 2 giant orange swords over my head.

The majority of PuGs wont even join the squad, they’ll just follow the icon like mindless drones. Because of this, I tend to save it for guild specific events and occasionally turn it on when coordinating multiple attack strategies with other commanders.

It definitely needs to be an account wide feature and needs a lot more utility than it currently offers.

The only thing that has truly bothered me about this match has been the glitching/accusation drama and the rumours that guilds have been transferring off of the other two servers. I’ve had some great battles this week and last week and have loved every minute of it, even in our defeats I have truly had a great time fighting both Darkhaven and Sorrows Furnace. I feel sorry for the servers that lost guilds over this, and I pity the guilds that have no sense of server pride that they feel the need to jump overboard when their ship is sinking. I will play on Sanctum of Rall with my family for my entire time with Guild Wars 2, my guild is my family and my server is my home.
