I think Guardian would be the banning-choice of the year by a 99% rate.

Likely so, but you can pick one before the ban and it creates a nice tension between the obvious Choice and the fact that a lot of Players have one Class they are really comfortable with and that is important for the Team.

Oh well, I didnt’ take that into consideration. Still it would be the guardian ppl will pick, just because he is so necessary in the beta.

In an earlier post i said special PvP armours should be made avaible at a certain rank. I did not mean rank as in total glory. Forgive me for my deception. With rank i ment rating as in the leaderbords we have right now. Like only the top 10, 100, 1000 and so on can buy special PvP armours when they have aquired a certain rating. And ofcourse only the no.1 can aquire a godlike armour. This way you can actually see how good someone is and this gives you something to show off.

Unfortunately this ladder is not representing what is going on. Especially the soloQ would have a disadvantage. Mabye if we have a real leaderboard in the future, this can happen.

RNG is fine. GW1 had it too and it worked out pretty well. Sometimes it can be frustrating though. I can remember of a friend which got mini-ghostly and crystal-blade out of the HoH-Chest in about 30 runs.
Buying just the skins you want is . . . boring. If you want spend gold / money on something, everybody needs to have the same chance.

The point of PvP rewards are more about bragging rights /prestige and seeing your own progression of skill. The result of this is competition.
It is not really about ingame gold, good looking gear and other things like many ppl suggesting here.

. . .but in the future a win-to-stay format should be implemented, or at least a toggle at the end of match to stay with the same group to re-que, thus shortening the time that the matchmaking algorithm has to sort.

I don’t think that this problem only applies to thieves, I think that in general the changes to ports spots around the maps, has been very unwelcome; it as completely obliterated a very interesting dynamic that was introduced to us at the start of guild wars 2.
I found this dynamic to be very refreshing as people had to memorize and understand all the different spots that you could port to.

I personally don’t think that it was necessary to nerf/change these port spots, it has done nothing but dumbed down the game, there are no more interesting port escapes or chases, it has also killed the viability of thieves on certain maps (looking at you khylo). I think that Arena net has made a mistake with this change, it was completely unwarranted and could’ve been tackled in a different manner, decreasing the port distances, potentially giving it a cool down, or giving it a totally new repercussion.

Sadly the change came at a very critical time where guild wars 2 tournament viewership has been on the rise, and one of the most enjoyable things was to watch people use these blink spots to their advantage, it saddens me that we will be seeing a lot less of that.

I really hope that arena net considers reverting this change.

I doubt this was intended. They went for the bugfix for stucking in walls caused by ports and somehow it affected the port-abilities. However I hope they can find a solution as a part of tactical depth is sticked to ports, which is especially for competitive play a great mechanic.

Another part of the problem is that the rank is not an indicator for real tournament experience. If A-Net realized at release that something was wrong with it, found a solution like only giving rank-points through tournament play and split glory to only hotjoin while making it viable for something, mabye they could have taken rank as a factor into consideration for the MMR.
Now they can’t because they kittened it up. Mabye they should consider the number of tournament wins instead.

My team was queueing expecting to run into another well-known/high ranked group who were also playing at the time.
Two minutes pop and we get a 500-150 match against solo queuers and a few r20s.
What? Half of us are nearly r60 and in top 10…

I doubt this has something to do with the size of population. At least you can’t be the only premade qeueing up during a certain time.

The biggest mistake they made in terms of competition was actually the outtake of the 3-round paid-tournaments. From then competition was for 3 months not existing. Seems like reducing the entry fee to 3 tickets was too difficult for them to handle. Instead they brought up 1-round-tournaments, which were more about a grind-fest and which team had more time to play.
At least they recognized that tickets in this system had no value anymore for the 1-round-paid-tournament. And now we have free-1-round-tournaments. Everyday, on and on. It is so interesting, really.

^This ….along with removing decent gems rewards from tpvp too..that goes side by side with this since i agree gems for just 1 match victory it’s indeed too much..

Gems… The only incentive we had, but will never find its way back into PvP, as stated from Devs. But I’m quite happy about these 200 glory-points and a chest we have now . . . I mean it’s not like I allrdy have about 500k glory and all the armors and weapons for 5 months in the locker, definitely not.

Well, I can live without Infiltrator Strike working most the time. I still have one good ability in my kit left. But this particular instance was with the Shadowstep utility. Basically, same thing applies to Shortbow.
This isn’t particularly S/D related although it does put a huge hamper on top of a completely unexpected nerf to Sword/Med Guards and Sword Thieves.

Don’t think this was actually intended by A-Net. Seems like the skill-gap on porting is gone.

This may seem like a sneaky advertising, but I will drop this here.

Especially the higher ranks are not worth it. Dredge and Nightmare Armor are dungeon-armors in PvE, so one has a much, much easier access. Tier 1 and 2 Cultural Armor cost less than 10g together. This is just one day in Citadel of Flame. And we spend time to reach 1621500 or 1771500 rank points to just get Tier 1 ? Even more with rank 70 requiring 3421500 or 387500 rank points. ( Not sure what to read out of wiki ). This carrot is rotten. And there is no other carrot to stick to aside skill progression ( which is rewarding itself too ).
Furthermore, I talked with a few of my friends and a conversion of like 100 glory to 1 gem would not be bad.
What infuriates me the most at the moment though is how I am forced to farm PvE for gems or play gamble with dyes. This means either spend less time on PvP or pray I get some good dye which sells well. This is not satisyfying at all, especially since it has been said that PvE and PvP should be completly seperate. One should not be forced to do stuff he or she does not enjoy in order to be able to purchase or enjoy things.
Also, get any RNG out, it is not in the favor of customers and even PvE’ers are put off.

As for infrastructure and it being a good part of the incentive, divide Solo-Q and Team-Q. As probably a lot competitive players will also play SoloQ, it may put others off, but I guess that will do more good than harm for learning purposes and some challenging matches.
Put in also seasons where one can earn titles, skins, etc., make it even quarter-yearly if it drags out too much. Or half a year.

Edit: Make it much less glory for higher rank points or scrap that system, else it will put off casuals too which have even less chances to get an armor like Nobleman, Dredge or Nightmare. Make the rewards much more accessible but also put in seperate rewards for high ranked/skilled players.
Giving the players freedom of choice to decide what armor or weapon to go for keeps them happier.

Rank is not worth any hour to grind, since competitive play is not rewarded. You can be no. 1 on this worthless ladder and still a hotjoin zerger makes more rank-progression over the day. This game overall feels not rewarding at any point in competitive play, it feels more like a job. As for me I rather enjoy some map-completation on PvE (which is sad) than wasting my time in a stale and repetitive game-mode without any kittening incentive. The only thing that keeps me in this game are my friends.

I think for a lot of people, these 3 things can make a drastic change to PvP.
- Special PvP armours which you can obtain at a certain rank. Anet can even ask gems to buy it for, so they can make a little profit.
- The abillity to wear your PvE looks in PvP. This was 1 of the things that made Guildwars 1 so succesfull.
- The option to transfer glory into gems, even if you just get a little bit. You can tranfer gold to gems, so why not glory?

The first two point, for me personally won’t make any difference, it’s just about the good-looking feeling. Your third point will never be implemented in the game, it’s like if PvE players asking for transfering karma into gold/gems.

In general I can tell you the things that made GW1 so successfull had nothing to do with armors and stuff like that. It was more about a better reward-system, good progression, a real title-system, solid ladder, several game-modes, ingame observer mode, automated tournaments daily and monthly, prestige stuff like emotes/capes etc.
Well this is my view of the situation. . .

I won’t argue with that. I have played Guild wars 1 and I enjoyed it for many reasons, including yours. But besides gameplay, It’s all about the looks and showing off. It might not effect you directly, but with many new people wanting to join up for PvP, you gain a healthy population. So in the end it will make you happy to.

Not gonna argue with that either. But in the end a new player enjoys a balanced and fair game rather than get throwed into tournament against an organized, highly competitive team while solo-qeueing. I always feel bad when I play with/against r1 players.
Sure a cool armor from PvE would be cool, but that won’t compensate the frustration of a bad mmr. I think there should be a seperated area for the r1-10 players, like for eg the non-swimmers having pools where they can stand on their feets.

It’s not right to place people who just started playing spvp with people who have been playing for a long time just to be crushed. I would think that it would be a big turn off for new players as well. Anet acknowledges this, but their “fix” is flawed, imo.

I think there should be a rank limit when you can queue for ranked tournaments. 10? 15? 20? I don’t know. but this is how it’s done in most of the games. You need to level up first to max level before you can pvp with/versus max level people. In GW2 there are no requirements, random Joe from the street can fight Muhammad Ali for the title just because matchmaking couldn’t find anyone else for him to fight.

And then most people will have quit before reaching tht rank because of Hotjoin idiocy. This might happen.

I agree something has to be done, though.

r10 is done in a maximum of a week? It’s not about zerging, but rather that a r1 doesn’t even have a knowledge how conquest works or how the map iz structured. It would be better to force the player to know the individual maps first before he actually jump right in the more competitive mode called tournaments.

I actually dont know how many players queing during the primetime, but the devs have this informations. The thing is, if 2 top tier teams are in the que, they always will met each other for sure! For this point, the MM must be working! Other option for these unserios rated games in my opinion can only be a small playerbase… You need 2 equal ranked grps during this 7minute que time, if not enough are in the que, the system still pics up 2 teams

The idea is good and many players wish this feature. There are many unexperienced/casual teams which are, let’s say “beatable” , for full soloQ-teams and that’s totally okay. But if I face for eg. TCG (which I did twice) during soloQeueing this is something different.
There are about 10 teams which I can call competitive enough to not loose against a soloQeue-team. And to seperate those 10, there is a daily tournament needed to draw in these competitive teams. Would definitely improve the feeling of “high-end-solo-qeuers”.

A reason why I rarely soloQ. How can a good premade as twg face a soloQ-grp?

ofcourse no other premade is queing at this time, or at least only lower ranked premades than the soloQ ranked group :-) Anet only told they want to increase the LB’s for working better, but they didn’t say there will be a seperated split for solo and premade que.

Thats the point, the playerbase is too low for a split que, we all saw it during the paid tournaments were online, huge queing time until game start.

At least yesterday, after the patch, we also got longer que times vs high tier teams than in the past… Example, a week ago, if 2 top20 LB Teams are queing, you had an instant pop for the tourney, yesterday after this patch, we weren’t able to get a pop up in less than 5minutes vs top 20 players.

The 3-round paid tournaments weren’t working because of the high entry-fee of 5 tickets, which is similar to win 4 3-round free-tournaments + the daily-reward-ticket. Besides that the rewards were a bad design.
The 1v1 on the other side had nearly everytime Qpops in under a minute.

To the topic: It’s fine to not split the qeues because of the low playerbase, but come on . . . a r1 paired into this? I’m sure there are other ppls qeueing at this time who were above r1.

I think the current system is fine and I am sad it was confirmed to be changed. Matchmaking is always broken in every game, but Guild Wars 2 has done well to keep PvP exciting and challenging nearly every match.

You also don’t face the same team over and over. In addition, you don’t need a full group of 5 to win.

You clearly never played GW1. I mean A-Net had one of the best MMR’s that I’ve ever seen and they just threw it away. No wonder why ppl are frustrated when we go backwards instead of forward.

Actually I did play GW1. I did not like the rating system at all due to “smurfs” that would farm low end teams by playing on another account. Also the participation was quite low, and it became much worse with the removal of heroes in PvP.

Also mind here, I was playing bronze as a protection monk.

Then you should know it better. Smurfs are allrdy happening in GW2 with second accounts btw. Also the participation was very high, in HA and GvG either. Actually you always had instant Q-pops and for this it required 16 players not 10.
I’m wondering if you talk about guildwars or another game which has on mysterious circumstances the same name. Prolly this has to be the reason.

I think a player that for example has to work during night or have shifting working hours, has neraly no chance to get a team. Nevertheless he should be able to play in a fair match and has also a chance to proove his skill. Also players that prefer to play alone or haven’t that much time to play in a team shouldn’t be disadvantaged either. With no splitted Q, they don’t have any chance to proove their skill. Everytime they work their way up in the ladder, sooner or later they’ll face a premade.

In my eyes they should have a chance to play competitive in a certain degree without a team. How do you think about that?

well, basically it is more like a prediciton you make. As most classes play with energy-sigils + vigor + evade skills (to name a few: updraft, whirlwind, phase-retreat, serpents strike etc.). Basically most classes have 3 dodges every 10 seconds + 1 evade skill/block skill.

Altough there is something called immobilize. The perfect counter to it, which makes it in my eyes balanced overall.

It is one of the strongest ultimates ingame, when not the strongest. Timewarp is just “meeh” compared to moa-morph. Also you have the advantage of killing someone in Moa-morph, his sigils stop working until he relogs/leaves the map. As a side-effect Moa-Morph reduces stats to zero, thoughness and armor included.

most of the time, the people kittening in map chat or putting people down are usually the ones at the bottom of the charts when the match is over – Im guessing from spending too much time worrying about other people and not enough about themselves.

I had to agree with your comment till you wrote this section. Sadly I have to disagree. The ppl that are on the bottom are mostly the ppl that care about conquest (defending nodes /keeping points neutral against 2 or more ppl). The rest is just zerging around doing some points, letting opponents freecaps and things like this.

How this did not get a hot fix by now boggles the mind. Hopefully tomorrow brings the long awaited fix and this thread can finally be put to bed.

A little tip for all that have problems to seeing an asura: Go in the options and activade the “Show All Enemy Names” and the problem is solved.

The problem doesn’t affect the players only. It affects all shoutcasters and viewers of tournaments and there is the main problem. There are allrdy tones of effects and fields, which makes observing / shoutcasting difficult. If you now have to watch some norns and asuras it’s even a bigger problem, because the norn effects will be that big, asura effects will be barely seen. Ergo: important actions can be overseen too easy. Plus it’s not fun to observe it.

Ok, I must confess that I’m a HSP and have no problems to keep track of the field, despite all skilleffects.

Me neither when I play on my own. But you ever watched a stream on twitch without 1080p quality? I doubt you have. Also it seems like you don’t know what I mean by shoutcasting. -.-*

I know what shoutcaster are and what they do but I wouldn’t talk about them, because they aren’t important for the game, are they?

Not sure if trolling or not. But yep, they are one of the most important sources.
