Interesting. I think I might a couple friendswho might take advantage of this sale.
(edited by Endless Soul.5178)
Worst in game eh? Fine with me. My only character is a Necromancer, AND I only do PvE. I guess I’m a masochist eh?
Took a picture of a buddy in landscape shot. Won’t say how and where though
. Has a Cantha feel to it.
Cantha!
~wistful sigh~
I. for one, am so glad there are no Zod kitten mounts in this game.
Yep, as a new-ish player myself, I’m fairly disappointed by that.
There were gem cards?
Oh wow, there’s some at my local Best Buy!
(edited by Endless Soul.5178)
I’ve been playing Guild Wars 1 off and on since open beta almost 10 years ago. I was there when Gaile had an in-game send off for her new position in Anet. I had, and still do, have such a good time in that classic game.
Over the years, things changed in my life (having a daughter for example) that got me to stop playing less and less. I still logged in from time to time and spent and hour here and there and kept up to date with things. However, by the time Guild Wars 2 came out, I was in no position to play anything, let alone actually buy a game.
Game time slowly became more available as more changes happened in my life, but I started playing other games. World of Tanks for a while, then War Thunder, and a handful of other games that were free to play. When my laptop crashed in early November of last year, I started tinkering with my now 8 year old PC, and there, hidden away on my secondary 40GB HDD, was my old Guild Wars folder, with the DAT file and executable intact. I gave it a try, and held my breath as it loaded up, and I found myself in old Lion’s Arch, with people in it. I’ve been playing every day since then.
I was amazed at how many people were still playing the game. After talking with lots of folks, the general consensus was that Guild Wars 2 was absolutely horrible. “It’s not Guild Wars.” some said. “Anet sold out to the kiddy crowd.” said others. I wanted to find out for myself, not just trust what others said. I started watching some gameplay videos on YouTube, and it looked intriguing. Ok, it looked a lot different from the Guild Wars I’ve known and loved for 10 years now, but it also looked fun.
When the 75% sale happened, I made absolutely sure to get in on the deal. I have not regretted it since.
And that’s the story of how I got here.
TL;DR – I’m having a great time since I bought Guild Wars 2 on sale. Best $10 I’ve spent in a very long time.
Some things I like about Guild Wars 2:
-I can play something other than human.
-I don’t really care for PvP, I’m an explorer by heart, and in this game I can explore to my hearts content.
-You’re never really alone in the PvE world. At any time, any number of other players can come along and help out in a fight. I really like that.
Some things that Guild Wars 1 had that I wish Guild Wars 2 had:
-Click on a point on the landscape in the distance, or an object, and you automatically run there. If Guild Wars 2 can do that, I’m not aware of it.
-Some of the classes that were in Guild Wars 1. Did the world just forget about them?
-Cantha.
Glad you got the problem resolved.
I’ve never played the games so these nice looking characters don’t mean much to me. I saw the movie though!
I think we need to see more pics to understand what the OP is talking about. A lot more pics.
I can’t think of a way to have items (weapons and backpacks) stowed on the back AND have capes. It had to be one or the other it seems.
Cantha will forever be in my heart.
I’d still play both, like I currently do.
You can try any of the following, which I find fun alone or in smaller-than-expected groups:
- Dungeons — most story mode and many explorable mode dungeons can be solo’d.
- Fractals — many are gated, but a few can be done solo, depending on profession. (I know they can all be done with only two people.)
- PvP — you don’t “solo” it exactly, but doesn’t require that you socialize or join a guild.
- WvW — if you can “havok” solo, you can be a kittenet to your server. It’s quite challenging when opponents have a lot of people (zerged or not).
- Achievements — most achievements can be solo’d and many are challenging (a lot are mostly bookkeeping, which not everyone enjoys).
- Map Completion — a lot of people consider this quite challenging to do alone.
- Iron Man — create a new character instead & try to level up to 80 without dying. (If you die, start over.) There are variations for only using found items, allowing one death per map, waiting until 80 to begin the challenge, etc.
Good luck.
As a PvE soloer myself, I think this is some good advice.
Caveat: I’m not level 80 yet.
Play with Latin, give your character 2 or 3 word name.
Exactly what I did.
Hmm, I didn’t seem to have any problems with any of my Guild Wars characters.
Aurion Ulster, Alastrine Isolde, Sigdriffa Olrun, Oriie Corvic, Hana Ozaki are just some of my Guild Wars 1 characters. Zerina In Aeternum (Eternal) for my only (for now) Guild Wars 2 character. All went through on the first try with no problems.
~shrugs~
This is quite exquisite. It also makes me wish future Guild Wars expansions would happen in Cantha.
I still play both (In fact, I’m logged in to Guild Wars 1 as I type this while taking a break from today’s Zaishen Vanquish).
Also, while I was at my local Frys Electronics store yesterday morning, I spotted a boxed Guild Wars: Game of the Year edition. I took a picture and sent it to the Guild Wars Facebook group I’m in. Didn’t see the price though.
Both games are very different, and both games have their strengths and weaknesses, but the franchise is still amazing. I definitely recommend getting the first game to make your experience more complete.
Speaking of which, my oldest Guild Wars character is coming up on his 10th birthday.
So it may not look like much, but will it do 0.5 past lightspeed? (I’m betting on “No”)
Both games (GW1 and GW2) are chock full of scenery. It’s just one of the great many reasons why I love the franchise.

Jeremy Soule’s music not memorable? This HAS to be a troll thread.
Well it was free if you were here when they came out and unlike the first living world arc, at least they are available. For new players and those who missed the whole thing I think they could have a package deal. All 8 for 1000 gems instead of 1600 gems.
As a new player, I’d do that.
In my experience anyone who uses a gamepad against those who use m+k will never be able to perform equally in twitch-based combat. There is a long history of this, so I cannot imagine it being an issue.
That’s been pretty much my experience as well. In another game I play War Thunder (WWII vehicle PvP combat) they managed to integrate M+K PC players, joystick PC players, and console players in the same game. Not surprisingly, the console players ended up getting slaughtered by the PC players on a regular basis.
I really don’t understand why you would want to limit yourself like that, but hey, whatever makes you a happy gamer. Perhaps it’s because I’m an older gamer, and the last console/gamepad I ever owned was a SEGA Genesis before Sonic the Hedgehog was released. I built my first PC around 1992 and never looked back.
GW1 Charr also had armor covering their necks, at least for the warrior classes.
Just don’t do what I did and place it in water.
~doh!~
Observances:
1. No airplanes observed in Tyria. (airships are not airplanes).
2. Tyrians suddenly observed to imitate airplanes.
Conclusion: Illuminati confirmed!
So what will this mean for new-ish players such as myself? I only have a couple traits unlocked so far, is this a new one to aim for first before others? Will the New Necromancer Guide stickied at the top of this forum need updating?
Since you’re just leveling you should be fine without it. There is no PvE content where you’d really need it to get along. In the long run it could indeed be a trait you might want to try.
Good to know, thanks for answering.

I can’t say I’m experienced enough to talk about crafting (only been playing a couple weeks), but I do think this topic is interesting, as crafting is still a bit of a mystery to me.
This sounds an awful lot like the people who were trying to get the name of the Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers movie changed because it reminded them of the World Trade Center attack.
~facepalm~
Awsome thank you!
Is the pve immersive? Like less of a tremendous grind?
I recommend exploration. Do hearts and events. That’s the best way to gain xp and level. No need for farming low level creatures to level. Exploration is where it’s at.
Exploration is what im looking for, if i can explore and grind instead of a never-ending go nowhere time burn like wow has become, this game has a lifer.
I’ve been playing this game for about two weeks and that’s exactly what I’m doing, exploring, and I’m having a lot of fun doing it.
I like not standing out and being plain. People tend to underestimate you this way.
Guild Wars…in SPACE!
Well, now that you have Guild Wars 1, my advice to you is don’t be in a rush, enjoy the game.
You even get an ally in the first Guild Wars (who’s name I forget) who stands upright the entire time he’s in your party!
~Kal
If you’re referring to Pyre Fierceshot ( a Guild Wars 1 hero), he’s hunched over like the other rangers and warriors.
You’re right though, in Guild Wars 1 the caster classes of the Charr are standing upright. If it’s possible in that game, why shouldn’t it be possible in this game? Did something happen in the 250 year time difference to make them ALL hunched over?
~who knows shrug~
This is why I don’t like things like dungeons and fractals, in any game. It’s not the content, it’s those people. And while I rationally know not everyone is like that, in fact, odds are the vast majority aren’t like that, those experiences are so sour they far outweigh the positive experiences over time, to the point where it’s more about deciding whether it’s worth the risk to get the mall-cop-by-day-special-forces-wanna-be-type-a-by-night-and-weekend type as my party leader, yelling at everyone, kicking people, blaming tanks and healers in trinity based games (always seems that guy is a DPS guy, right?).
It’s like this pair of scissors I just bought my dad … (what they … ?)
Got them from Amazon, but it wasn’t coming from the
american worker labor abuselocal staging warehouse, it was a third party seller, so you can’t deal easily with Amazon. They were supposed to be here 4 days ago. Tracking the number, the seller used DHL to get it to the USPS here in town, and that is the last record of it. I submitted a “where’s my stuff” form with USPS online (because I really don’t want to call someone), and got a reply email: “Call ‘Steve’ at this number.”Oy.
So I call the number, ask for Steve. “Uh, there’s like no Steve here any more man.” I explain I got an automated form telling me to call Steve. “Oh, uh wait that Steve. Sorry, there’s two Steve’s and like one of them left, that’s why I was confused, you should call back when he’s like back from lunch in a half hour.” I guess figuring that 2-1=0? I don’t know.
So now, do I call new-Steve at this point, or just pay another $4.75 and try again, not having to talk to new-Steve, which will invariably turn into a really bad experience?
See? Scissors + new-Steve = Dungeons. All makes perfect sense.
Yep, I’ve met enough new-Steves in my gaming life that I pretty much just play solo unless I’m in a group of friends. A lot less headaches, high school drama, and disappointment that way.
Even in Guild Wars 1 I still watch the cutscenes.
Level 35 and progressing nicely (although it’s going to be a while before I can post some nice armor like the rest of you have).
Necromancer. My only character actually.
I rather like the white background. It makes it easier to blend in with other documents I have open while at work.
Really? I’m hearing Guild Wars 1 music by Jeremy Soule in the few places I’ve been to. (I’ve only been playing a week)
I’d hop on the first boat headed for Cantha.
I’ve…seen a Dhuum ban in Guild Wars 1, up close and personal. Got a snarky guy just a few steps away from me.
I’ll never forget it. ~shivers~
Noob question: What are “6-0 skills”? I’m still learning the lingo for this game.
Middle of the day on a weekday, when most people are either at work or school. Interesting time for a stress test.
As to game play, some call it archaic but I rather enjoy Guild Wars 1 combat to this day. It takes knowledge and skill to build a team that can perform well. Which is completely the opposite of Guild Wars 2 where literally anything can be used. The story is extremely well written and is more than Guild Wars 2 could ever hope to be. The lore is fantastic. There is a reason Guild Wars 2 was so overhyped and it is due to the previous game being amazing.
Pretty much this. I also agree with just about every other post in this thread.
As someone who played Guild Wars 1 since open beta (almost 10 years ago, wow!), I still love playing the game. In fact, I’ll probably be playing it this weekend to help some friends out with some vanquishes.
But, I’m really liking this game too.
Guild Wars 1 main character: Alastrine Isolde
Took me a minute to figure out that you were talking about Elder Scrolls Online.
That is what you are talking about, yes?
As a new player myself, and only having one character, a necromancer, I’m definitely taking a “challenge accepted” approach. If I wanted easy mode, I would have went with warrior (no offence to warriors).
So far I’m having lots of fun and really enjoying myself. A $10 well spent. I’ve joined a guild that’s entirely populated with necromancers and I’ve been getting great advice. In the future after I get Zerina to level 80, well, I’ll cross that bridge when I get there. Right now, the journey is amazing.
Caveat: I’m only playing PvE for now.
You know that you make the most money in this game by selling crafting mats
at the TP ?.
Actually, I wasn’t aware of that.
Excuse: I’m a beginner.
Lips for days. Probably a few weeks too.
