We absolutely want to make build templates. They could work similar to GW1, but there are more components to a build now. Using the old string-code method may prove to be unwieldy.

Things that must be in a template:

  • Weapons
  • Sigils
  • Rune
  • Amulet
  • Skills
  • Traits

What could be in a template:

  • Skins
  • Dyes
  • Outfit
  • Finisher

Things to consider:

  • Sharing (chat links? codes? urls?)
  • Viewing (seeing some else’s vs. seeing your own)
  • Saving (notepad vs. local vs. account vs. web)
  • Building (one spot in UI vs. multiple spots)
  • Websites (third-party sites should work with in-game)
  • APIs (Could expose an API to third-parties)
  • PvP vs PvE vs WvW (each mode requires different configuration options)

How would you like to see any/all of these work?

AI builds are almost always worse in PvE than PvP. They are also widely unviable in coordinated play. AI itself isn’t an issue, just keep pushing the passive play into more active (a la Bone Minions being awful without landing Putrid Explosion), reduce the visual clutter, and increase readability of certain skills.

Yeah if all the minion damage was baked into the actives, instead of auto attacks, they’d be much more reasonable.

This was a pretty monumental change that happened a few months back, and while there was some rage about it at the time, there hasn’t been much discussion about it since. So let’s get some going:

What do you think, is allowing immobilize to stack duration instead of overwriting the previous application good or bad for the game?

Personally I don’t think the idea itself is awful, if immobilize were difficult to apply. Immobilize is massively powerful: it not only locks your target in place allowing you to more easily burst, but it prevents the target from using their dodge rolls. Right now it’s very easy to spam immobilize and cover condis across numerous classes, and condi cleanses are much less readily available than immobilize applicators. This makes immobilize cheesy; it doesn’t take a lot of talent to spam your immobilizes on recharge then beat your target’s face in while he can’t defend himself.

In my opinion there are two options to make immobilize a much more interesting mechanic: do a comprehensive balance of immobilize across the board causing it to be more difficult and less common to apply or allow players to dodge roll in place while immobilize. We’re seeing some of the former in the balance patch with nerfs to Warrior Longbow and Engineer Net Turret, which is good. The latter option, of course, would be much easier but would also remove a massive chunk of what makes immobilize so powerful.

What are your thoughts?

BG vs TC on EBG. TC going to re-take mendons. BG follows TC through the gate right as they break it. TC goes to lord room + kill lord. Cap goes off RIGHT as BG swamps the TC zerg. TC zerg wipes and somehow the lord dies in the process.

We guessed that the lord buff doesn’t go up right away and he must have melted during the fight. Anyway, BG ended up capping somehow and here’s what was leftover.

Condi damage isn’t as big a deal as it was last summer when targeted AoE condi cleave was very very strong. Ranger spirits saw some tweaks + targeting changes made themn much more manageable. The famous Dhuumfire necro received nerfs to several important traits and even weapon skills which reduced it’s ability to cleave with condis. Condi engi didn’t see a lot of changes but easier to play builds (decap engi) became popular which reduced the number we saw in play. Condi management received a few scattered buffs over the last year and the meta has shifted as well.

tl;dr Condis aren’t a huge problem anymore but they’re still often regarded as “cheese” specs b/c they rely on lots of auto-attack spam and/or AI and/or passive procs to apply lots of passive damage that’s far easier to apply than it is to avoid or remove.

Sorry, I may not understand correctly what happened:
Are you saying you crafted a full set of armor, six pieces… by mistake? How can that happpen?

I am sure I misunderstand the issue.

I collect all the materials for an entire set, and then craft the whole set at once. If you look at the materials required to craft two different stat combos, they are identical except for the T6 mats required to craft the inscriptions.

I have at least a stack of each of the T6 mats. In the past I have only ever crafted Zojja’s weapons/armor. This was the first time I was going to craft Ahamid’s armor, since I had never needed PVT equipment as a PvE player. The combination of exhaustion (from staying up all night during reset weekend, the first week of new seasons, on a T1 server to WvW) and habit lead me to craft Zojja inscriptions and a set of Zojja’s armor before I had realized my mistake.

I’m not trying to scam anything here…I put the work in to make a whole set of Ascended armor. I just don’t want it to go to waste because I made a careless mistake when I wasn’t thinking properly and ended up with an armor set that I can’t use.

So last weekend I went to craft my new set of Ahamid’s Heavy Armor (Power/Toughness/Vitality). It was reset weekend and I had been up all night in EBG and was just going to craft my new armor set before going to sleep. Anyway I was pretty zombie-like and manged to craft an entire set of Zojja’s (power/precision/crit damage) Heavy Armor by mistake. This was a huge mistake and I can’t even use the armor set I’ve crafted since my two heavy classes (War + Guard) already have full sets of Zojja’s Armor.

Naturally I submitted a ticket, and got a prompt response from GM Enigma. Enigma said they don’t normally refund lost items but asked for some extra information so s/he could look into making an exception in this case. I readily supplied the information, but it was not GM Enigma who responded to my updated ticket. GM Khal responded with an almost form-like answer that it is against policy to refund lost items and that s/he was closing my ticket. I requested that GM Enigma take another look at the ticket since s/he had seemed very willing to help before, and I also asked if it would be possible to roll back my account completely to its state before I crafted the armor set. GM Khal politely, but sternly, responded that the the issue was closed and requested that I do not update my ticket again.

Gaile could you please take a look at this ticket! An ascended set takes literally weeks to assemble and it’s going to be extraordinarily painful for me to just have the set sitting in storage in the hopes that one day a new heavy class is introduced =(

Rox, Braham, Marjory, Kasmeer, and Taimi are referred to internally as “B-Iconics” (or Biconics) as opposed to our “A-Iconics” or main iconic characters, Caithe, Rytlock, Eir, Zojja, and Logan. They are not a “replacement” for Destiny’s Edge; these characters fulfill a different role in the story. Because members of Destiny’s Edge are so entwined with your Personal Story as well as the over-arching story with Zhaitan, and because the Living World plot lines are taking place at the same time all those other story threads, we couldn’t have the members of Destiny’s Edge splitting themselves between these other areas and what was going on with Living World. This is partly why we introduced these new characters.

Are we now to assume that the events of the Living Story are occuring concurrently with the events of the Personal Story? I thought we had some fairly concrete ingame dates (especially from the last patch) which confirm that the personal story occured in 1324-25AE and the Living Story is now in 1327AE.

Moa Morph can blocked and dodged. Its casting can also be interrupted. By virtue you have elected all AI pets you have forgone the ability to block/stability/condition remove through utilities

Necros have no block or dodge options on any skill, let alone utilities. Plus, condition removal/stunbreaks/stability don’t do anything against Moa anyhow.

And no, Moa Morph is not a counter to MM, the bug relating to transformations and summons is.

I repeat: it is a BUG that Moa, Plague, and Lich Form kill off all non-jagged horror minions. The tooltips for the necro elites got changed to serve as a warning, but it is actually not intended. The same is true for other summons that Moa kills; it is not intended for transformations to kill them.

If it says so on the tooltip how can you possibly justify that it’s not intended/bugged O_o

Don’t complain when there’s a a relatively unused hard counter to the most brain-dead easy spec in the current meta

Just out of curiosity, what made you guys decide to switch from the the simple and robust Elo system from GW1 to Glicko2 in GW2?

Elo seemed to work very well and was an entirely transparent way to rank + matchmake players.

I wasn’t with ArenaNet when the decision was made, so I can’t say for sure.

My guess would be because of the ratings deviation available with Glicko.

The problem with the Elo system that the Glicko system addresses has to do with the reliability of a player’s rating. Suppose two players, both rated 1700, played a tournament game with the 1st player defeating the second. Under the US Chess Federation’s version of the Elo system, the 1st player would gain 16 rating points and the second player would lose 16 points. But suppose that the 1st player had just returned to tournament play after many years, while the second player plays every weekend. In this situation, the 1st player’s rating of 1700 is not a very reliable measure of his strength, while the second player’s rating of 1700 is much more trustworthy. My intuition tells me that (1) the 1st player’s rating should increase by a large amount (more than 16 points) because his rating of 1700 is not believable in the 1st place, and that defeating a player with a fairly precise rating of 1700 is reasonable evidence that his strength is probably much higher than 1700, and (2) the second player’s rating should decrease by a small amount (less than 16 points) because his rating is already precisely measured to be near 1700, and that he loses to a player whose rating cannot be trusted, so that very little information about his own playing strength has been learned.

Heya all. Do we have any indication of the timeframe for the Personal + Living Stories? I.e. for specific events in the stories correspond to dates on the Mouvelian calendar and if so do have a general/specific idea of what events match up to what dates in the ingame calendar.

It would be cool to know the rate at which things are happening (i.e. did the formation of the Pact and defeat of Zhaitain correspond to a number of real-world years, months, or weeks)

We use Glicko2 with very minor alterations. When updating your rating, we adjust based on the average MMR of the other team.

We want to do further alterations and tuning to our MMR system, but not until we deprecate the current leaderboards.

I’m only rank38 and haven’t played thief too much, but I’ve noticed too that instead of “high risk, high reward” popular thief builds produce spammy “evade uptime” gameplay.
This and GW2 uncounterable stealth mechanic (thing that just shocked me when I started to play) makes me feel really bad about this version of “rogue” class.

Thieves don’t have any other options really, since their “high-risk high-reward” builds (Backstab + Pistol Whip) have already been nerfed heavily =\

The only problem with the wurm being so hard is that Bob the level 37 ele thinks it was made for him. Perhaps a warning similar to ski slopes “EXPERTS ONLY” would have helped mitigate all this criticism of it.

I’ve spent way too many enjoyable hours on the wurm. The people it wasn’t made for hate it for mistaking it for general content.

It would be nice if we all could whittle away many hrs for zero rewards , however my time ingame is precious so I have to make every minute count. I don’t have time to stand around while everyone holds hands & sings songs pre event to feel co-ordinated.

Many of you seem to crave this mass co-ordination & communication & feeling of community, its quite simple to find, its called a life, go live it & let us play playable content LIVE not in 2 hrs. Thank you.

My time in game is precious too, which is why I spent it playing the wurm and having fun. I’m honestly confused what you’re getting at, other than taking the time to insult people who like to play the wurm.

He’s trying to say that the overflow system for these events is a problem. In order to have a reasonable shot at downing the boss you need to get into your overflow more than an hour ahead of the boss spawn, and then just sit there waiting for the timer top pop.

The timers and mob HP were balanced and rebalanced several times in an attempt to find a sweet spot that would ensure people couldn’t faceroll the event, but wasn’t so difficult that no one could do it. Everyone’s mileage will vary. And as with any group activity, virtual or real life, there is luck inherent in that. Some people hate that dynamic and some love it. If someone has an idea about how to ameliorate the inherent luck factor in group events, please speak up!

I’d suggest two things:

  1. Improve the overflow system to allow players/parties to select which overflow they want to join
  2. Introduce events/mechanics to allow players to trigger the World Boss (in a certain time window)

This will allow Guilds/Raids to more easily get all of their players into the same zone and will alow them to start the event once they’re ready. It’ll facilitate organization, make the World Boss more accessible, and reduce some of the dependence on having to rely on completely random people to complet the event.

Hey, thanks everyone! We spent a lot of time tweaking the balance on this, and I’m glad that so many people appreciate our efforts. We REALLY like hearing that people are making memories and cheering each other on. Those are the kinds of experiences we make MMOs for.

I’m not surprised that the Wurm is not liked by as many people. We were making that specifically for the hard core groups that are all about the organization and figuring out the strategy and tactics. It’s really cool watching the community grapple with this puzzle and innovate as they get closer and closer to finding a winning strategy.

Out of curiosity, why put the wurm in the open world and not in an instance then? If this is meant to be hard-core content for a more limited-group of players, putting it in the world-map seems like a Bad Idea: you force players to spend hours sitting in the map waiting for spawns so they don’t get locked out of the Main Server/Overflow for that map, and the hardcore players on the map have to contend with random pugs who don’t know what they’re doing and don’t want to cooperate with strategy or get on voice comms.

In the future can the design team seriously consider putting difficult, larg-scale (read 40+ player) content into instances so that players can truly control when + who is participating with them?

There are some nice foods available from NPC vendors for cheap, but they only last 15 minutes. Being able to round them up to a few hours is useful, but like almost every gem store item, it’s very situational and is balanced more against how you value real money and not gold.

Gold is a lot more annoying for me to accumulate than cash. When I look at an item in the gem store I never try to value it in gold. For me having to be aware of when my food is expiring and renew it is a hassle if it’s 30 minutes or less, so the primers would be worthwhile to me in cash if I was planning on a long play session. There is no equivalent item for me that can be bought for gold.

Folks that aren’t as annoyed by having to refresh their food or who have better things to spend that gold or cash on would value it differently.

It should work that food eaten right after the primer lasts 12 hours. Scattered reports of a bug perhaps here.

Talmor, the way you read it originally is how it should work. Do you know exactly what food you were using? Also, what maps / areas you were in?

Spunkeimania, you can eat food during the 12 hours.. it will change which food buff you have but the duration should still last the rest of the 12 hours (rounded up, so never less than an hour)

I’m not sure what the point of this item is then, Curtis. I can’t think of a single item of food where purchasing 24x (half hour buffs) would be more expensive than the cost of coverting gold into 125 gems (or 105 gems if you buy en masse).

At an average rate of 5g/100 gems it would cost 6.25g to purchase 125 gems (or 5.25g for 105 gems if buying en mass) and a food item would have to cost more than 26s (or 22s if buying en masse) to make the cost work out. Right now the most expensive food item in game is Bowl of Sweet and Spicy Butternut Squash Soup at 44.31s per item, but this item has a one hour duration giving it an effective cost of 22.15s per half hour. That’s right at the break even point for making the Metabolic Primer worthwhile, but that’s only if you’re buying the lowest listed price. If you’re willing to place buy orders you can get the item for 36.41s/hour, and the cost is even lower if you’re willing to place buy orders for the materials and craft the items yourself.

So what I’m saying is that I don’t understand this item…even if you’re willing to buy the most expensive food item at its highest possible cost, the Primer isn’t worthwhile. There’s not really an added convenience since opening the inventory to click another item isn’t a hassle and you’re arguably losing value on your food by having it active for 12h b/c you’ll rarely be doing nothing but combat on a character for 12 consecutive hours of gameplay. It just doesn’t seem useful from a cost-saving or convenience perspective =\

This part from Colin’s quote, I 100% agree with:

For me, the best parts of watching a PvP game experience is being able to see cool tactics or actions in play that don’t require me to understand every single skill or ability players are using. Even if I can’t tell every detail about why people are killing one another, if the game mode allows you to see the strategies and key moments and visually understand why they worked, those make the best games to watch (and often to play.)

However, I think this is one of the biggest reasons that conquest is so boring to watch and why GW1 GvGs were so much more interesting.

Conquest maps are so small that 90% of the action is based around small team fights on concentrated sites with very little movement between spots. GW1 GvG on the other hand, had larger maps with much more going on. Sure, small maps put players in the action immediately and frequently, but the game borders on a big clusterf*** of action.

I agree, larger maps with more secondary mechanics (and less capping) make for more interesting matches to play and watch due to the added strategy

I stopped playing for a week and went from rank 800 to 425. Came back, won 6 matches in a row and went to top 100. Ranking system is bogus.

Heya all, Colin Johanson popped over to our reddit thread about the ESL 6v6 GvG tourney yesterday, here’s what he had to say about new game modes and GW1-style GvG rules in GW2:

It’s certainly one of the game modes we know well, but we’re exploring all game mode options right now to try and find what works the best for the game.

For me, the best parts of watching a PvP game experience is being able to see cool tactics or actions in play that don’t require me to understand every single skill or ability players are using. Even if I can’t tell every detail about why people are killing one another, if the game mode allows you to see the strategies and key moments and visually understand why they worked, those make the best games to watch (and often to play.)

Conquest is relatively easy to understand and watch, but lacks at times a really clear sense of momentum being shifted because the cap points constantly change hands so often, and aren’t unique from one another. Of all the maps, legacy of the foefire is the closest to this (to me) of the conquest maps, because it has a secondary objective that requires a clear strategic shift in game-play, is easy to understand, and creates that moment of true excitement and momentum (even if you fail to kill the lord.) The GvG style rules of this 6v6 tourny, and Gw1 style GvG really embody a lot of the best parts of that concept.

Game modes that have more definitive clear moments of strategy, that are visually clear, easy to understand, and easy to explain but loaded with strategic depth will be some of the best options for us (in my opinion.)

Anyway this thread is really about the tourny and why it’s awesome, but there is some saturday evening random thoughts

What sort of mechanics would have to be introduced to make the game mode work better in GW2? What other game modes would be as good/better to watch/play? Thanks all!

They still said that if you want pure DPS, zerker items are the best to get right now.

That’s what I’;m saying though. Pure Zerker will always be better than taking healing power/vitality/toughness because evade frames + active defenses allow a talented player to prevent close to 100% of active defenses. And that’s the way it should be.

Do you really want a game where you need to have passive stats to mitigate damage in order to survive? People when apekitten over Ascended gear, but a world that promotes passive stats make things like Ascended gear astronomically more important.

I want a game where the best player performs the best. Passive offense stats allow the best players to shine. Passive defense stats act like a crutch for the less talented players to make up for their lack of talent/skill

As they stated in the twitch feed this is just the first of many changes. They said they needed to bring zerker down before they could make the other more significant changes. So this nerf is just stage one, the other builds will be changing in the future.

Then make the ferocity change but keep it on par with current levels of crit damage. Look at a reduction in the crit damage available when they’re ready to make more fundamental changes to toughness/vitality/healing power and NPC AI + Boss mechanics

How truly awful.

Why?

A 10% reduction in the output of Zerker builds will not make people more likely to use support builds (healing power/toughness/vitality are still bad stats that promote bad play).

It’s just going to make already tedious encounter 10% slower.

So its bad to make it so other builds are better?

It doesn’t make bad builds better. It makes the most effective build 10% less effective. The best build will still be lightyears ahead of everything else.

And that makes other builds better when you drop one thing another thing becomes more of a chose. They are opening up more chose by making all in zerk the end all be all.

Score builds on a scale from 1-100. Right now Zerk is at a 99. Everything else is at a 4. Reducing zerk from 99 to 95 doesn’t make any other spec more viable.

Stop being a troll, everyone knows that nerfing in a vacuum doesn’t change a meta unless you nerf the meta into the ground. You must pair nerfs with buffs to other areas to effect real change.

It’s just going to make already tedious encounters 10% slower. Defensive stats need a complete rework to be useful. People won’t use defensive stats just because damage sets are less damaging that they used to be.

This is a shortsighted change. Have Ferocity scale identically to current levels of crit damage when you push it live. Tinker with it later when you’re ready to start revising defensive stats completely.
