4. Why do her alliances…continue working with her?
Each has its own reason.
Krait: They’ve been warped by Scarlet and the Nightmare Court. By the end, the scenario had changed. Scarlet proved she could bring back a prophet to their satisfaction (whether it was actually a prophet or not, no one really knows, but the toxic krait believe it was). And they can’t exactly go join other normal krait. How do you think regular xenophobic krait would feel about these toxic ones?
The Toxic Krait have changed too much to be accepted by their regular brethren.
I don’t think I would like seeing the Pact destroyed by an Elder Dragon. Humbled maybe, but outright destroyed? No. We don’t need to see an Elder Dragon have a complete victory against the Pact to show them as a threat. We just need to show them have a victory, and that there are consequences to us losing. Bad consequences.
While it might be somewhat understandable given the circumstances, if you actually knew what was all going on during the lead up to the fight, Zhaitan was shown to the players to be an easy win. We just fought our way too him, and we killed/defeated a global threat with the pressing of a single button. It makes it look way too easy.
If they want to show us that the Elder Dragons are a threat, they can have the player join in a Pact assault against one, and they can have the Pact lose the fight. Horribly if need be. Afterwards, they can show in the next couple of chapters of the LS: the ED expanding its territory, launching counterassaults, and possibly changing the terrain a bit, and adding to the events of an area.
They tried this a bit in the PS, with the battle of Claw Island, but that was too isolated to really make an impact in the rest of Tyria. It was an island that the player only visited for those missions, and when the Risen pressed the attack and assaulted LA, it didn’t change anything. Once you exit the mission, you’re back to the bustling city with children running underfoot, and there isn’t a hair out of place damage wise.
At least when Scarlet attacked the city, she destroyed it, and it stayed destroyed. It’s those types of changed that make much more of an impact in the story. Or as many like to sum it up as, “Show, don’t tell.”
At this point a Tengu isn’t just plausible, it’s sensible.
The next leader of the Pact doesn’t have to be totally neutral. Trahearne’s neutrality is what allowed him to be able to start the Pact with the player. Him and the player acted at the neutral ground in which the Order could get over their previous conflicts and start to be able to work together. As long as the next leader can show he/she has a level head, some leadership qualities, and can act as a mediator between the different factions, it shouldn’t be too much of a problem for them taking the reins.
What I was repeatedly pointing out, with the Tengu being unknowns still and the leadership role being political as well, is that the Order leaders, as well as the nation leaders, need to trust whoever is in charge. They are giving their resources over to the Pact to use against the Elder Dragons in good faith, but that might change if someone they don’t even know, or even have a slightly bit of a clue about, takes over the Pact. How do they know that the new person is trustworthy or not?
Trahearne is known to everyone, and he is seen as trustworthy by most, if not all, the leaders.
Random Tengu, even if he is respected Pact member, would be totally unknown to the nation leaders.
It would help a little bit if the Tengu character was a previously know character, but as I said before, the person, and the race as a whole, would really have no ties outside of the Pact.
Trahearne, while not know to (some of) the players, was still a major character in the world before we met him. It was one of the meaning reasons he fit the leadership role of the Pact.
- He was on good terms with the three Orders.
- He was a neutral figure.
- He was knowledgeable on the world as well as the enemy.
- And he probably has at least some political clout with the other player nations, being a Firstborn.
People have to remember that the Pact is an international military alliance, so its leader is a political role as well as militaristic one, and they have to maintain good relations with all the Orders and nations to work fully.
So if a Tengu replaced Trahearne, even if he’s well respected in the Pact, he/she would have nowhere near the ties and trust that Trehearne has. It doesn’t help matters at all that the Dominion of Wind has no ties with its surrounding nations. He/she would literally be a stranger from a land unknown to most people.
That idea wouldn’t really work for one of the same reason people complained about Trahearne. “Who is this person? I don’t know him. He came out of nowhere!”
The Tengu had little to no contact since they have established the DoW. One popping out of the woodwork and taking the reins of an international military alliance would make no sense.
Anyone else see Pene dying and Bloom going all action-hero-revenge. Maybe even becoming a part of Destiny’s Edge 2.0 :P
Kasmeer: Peneloopee? Bloomanoo? Why are they running?
Marjory: Because we have to chase them.
Kasmeer: They didn’t do anything wrong.
Marjory: Because they’re the Quaggans Tyria deserves, but not the ones it needs right now. So we’ll hunt them. Because they can take it. Because they aren’t our heroes. They’re silent guardians. Watchful protectors. AdoOooOoorable Knights.
And lastly, we still don’t know it’s Mordremoth. I mean seriously, evil creature in bad dreams is a pretty common story trope. Ever seen nightmare on elm street?
A Tyrian version of Freddy Krueger?
~Pictures a being of Nightmare killing off the unborn Sylvari in the Dream, leaving the bodies to be born stillborn, as well as causing wide scale hallucinations in Sylvari npcs.~
Make it happen Anet! MAKE IT HAPPEN!
Königs nightmare yet back again.
Just lean back and watch the discussion unfold for the fifth time. There are several threads in the Lore section that are almost identical.
Fifth time? Try something more like the fiftieth time. I’d surprised that Konig hasn’t written down the entire debunking info and saved it somewhere. That way, he can just copy/paste a reply and be done with the threads that crop up all together.
I hate to say it, but that picture has been on the wiki since forever. Though, it has been moved around a bit page-wise, since the district has changed over time.
The Pact wasn’t really involves in any of Scarlet’s mayhem though. (As shown by Laranthir of the Wilds dialogue.) Scarlet targeted and attacked its main supporters though. She drove out and/or killed settlements of the Norn and Charr, infected an entire region for the Human and Sylvari, and I guess Thaumanova could count as a strike against Rata Sum.
And she didn’t weakening the minor threats. Almost all of her alliances were made of splinter groups of each faction. If anything, she just pruned back the stupid members of each faction, and each alliance had the chance of strengthening the remaining numbers.
Dredge and the Flame Legion probably got a couple of pieces of Molten tech each.
Aetherblades and the Inquest both got Pact airships, or at least the plans for the Inquest.
Nightmare Court got the toxic plants that spread around the Krytan region.
Krait got some obelisk shards.
The fanatically members might have died, but each factions probably got something out of the disastrous alliances.
And that’s why it’s a lesser evil to bump him up now rather than let him sip the ley lines further more ! The point is that the magic he got with that spike of magic is less than what he could have gathered if we let him be.
To make that statement, we would need to know how much magic Mordy was naturally taking from the ley line he might have been on, how much longer it would have taken him to awaken by the ley line’s magic alone, and how much strength he would have compared to natural awakening versus Scarlet’s “helped” awakening.
We have no clue on any of these subjects. Until then, you can’t say for certain that what Scarlet did was a greater evil or a lesser one.
And as I said before, if Scarlet was a “good” guy, and she wanted to awaken him earlier so he was easier to deal with, she should have taken her giant flying drill, stuck it right above him, and she should have drilled down until she hit bone. That would have probably have woken him up just as easily. If it didn’t, he would have been easy pickens then.
Instead, she just gave him a huge shot of adrenalin and basically said, “Hahaha. Have fun folks! He’s your problem to deal with now.”
Particularly since, when you think about it, a mesmer would be expected to make a better spymaster than a necromancer, and that’s pretty much what the Master Exemplar acts as. Consider all those times in the human personal stories when Anise puts an illusion on the PC and others – a necromancer wouldn’t have that advantage.
I couldn’t help but think of something awful about this.
Necromancer Master Exemplar: Here. I stitched together something you could wear as a disguise. The bandits will never notice y….
Player: By the Six! Is this human skins!?
Magic doesn’t work like electricity though. If they are anything like their minions, the more magic their absorb, the stronger they get. It doesn’t help matters at all, in between the 6 Elder Dragon, they can consume a majority of magic of the entirety of Tyria. That’s a lot of magic only divided six ways.
And Zhaitan did a huge meal ticket, it was the Artesian Waters. I’m not sure if it is as strong as it use to be, but the Waters radiated enough magical energy to draw the Six’s attention to Tyria in the first place. Something that can’t be said for the ley line convergence.
Or, she woke him early, before he gathered enought strengh, so we could kill him because she saw our defeat in the future,
This theory would work if she didn’t give it a huge magical meal to wake it up. If she wanted to just wake it up, she could have possibly just taken her giant flying drill and then proceed to drill directly above him. It would have either woken it up, or it would have exposed it in its slumbering state.
The phrase “easier said than done” comes to mind.
Us players can talk ourselves to death by arguing on how to make the game better, but that doesn’t change the fact that the devs don’t have a magic wand to change everything on whim. The have to work with time restrictions, financial restrictions, technology restrictions, rating restrictions, and story restrictions.
Trying to change the game in any sort of drastic way, would be like trying to bring a moving train to a dead stop to change directions. It doesn’t work well at all. The best thing to do on something of this scale is make small changes and improvements that add up overtime. It might take longer to do, but it’s a lot less jarring of an experience.
As for your example, there is a reason why gw2 went with the unification theme. Without everyone working together, there is a strong possibility that an Elder Dragon could kill them all, since they are an extinction level event if left alone. Everyone is fighting everyone in your narrative suggestion. What’s stopping an ED from popping up an wiping out all the weakened forces after a major battle?
Sure, the adde conflict might add more “maturity” and “realism” to the game in your opinion, but the added global conflict doesn’t make much sense when there are literal monsters at the door waiting to kill everyone.
They still have more than a month to work on content, stuff can change, and having a community speculate and jump to conclusions before anything is official is a bad idea for new content.
You better tell this to every single type of media ever then.
TV shows release teasers for the upcoming season months in advance, movies release trailers months ahead of time, books do it with a beginning chapter of the next book in the back, and gaming does it everywhere. How often do we see teaser images for an upcoming game? Or better yet, in MMOs, how often do we see cgi teaser videos that advertise an upcoming expansion, or short videos or imagines using game models to promote a future patch?

One month of semi-downtime in no skin off my back. More time for me to draft in Hex.
While it is possible, we don’t know if Mordy was “the Entity” that was manipulating Scarlet. People have assumed as much, because Scarlet’s main goal was to awaken it, but there hasn’t been any evidence as of yet making the direct connection.
They can’t do this by themselves, they need help from others. And yes, it appears as though they have a motive to wake up early.
As shown by Kralk, the Elder Dragons can awaken themselves, without the need of a champion working on their behalf. Glint was probably Kralk’s “alarm clock”, and she was actively working against him and plotting his death. It just most likely takes them a bit longer to wake up by themselves.
Personally, I don’t think Livia would care much how people view her or her methods, as long as they stay out of her way.
Though, I think I said in another Livia thread a long while ago, I can easily see her stepping down. While it might be the leader of the Shining Blade, the role of Master Exemplar is a bit constraining, since they have to be constantly within a safe distance of the King/Queen at all time to protect them.
As long as there was a suitable candidate for the role, I can see Livia stepping down to a lower position to make better use of her skills elsewhere. As for Anise’s and Livia’s supposed similar personality, it could be possible that Anise worked under/apprenticed for Livia after she joined the Shining Blade. If Anise showed the promise of leadership skills, work ethic, and conviction for the job, Livia could have basically groomed her for the role of Master Exemplar.
This was already asked to the devs during a livestream, actually, and Angel McCoy responded with that there is nothing – they’re just friends.
Thank God for that. I’m getting mighty tired of browsing these forums and seeing threads about “X and X should be in a relationship” and little if any attention being focused on the game’s lore and story.
Not a popular stance, I know, but I’m speaking from experience when I say that “shippers” can really derail a franchise if they’re allowed to run amok.
I’m not sure which forums you’ve been on, because I don’t think I’ve seen many relationship threads in awhile. There was a big surge when the Marjory/Kasmeer relationship was revealed, and a couple Braham/Rox ones a bit later, but I don’t think they have ever drowned out any discusses on the lore or other subjects. They have always died down after a short while.
The longest one is probably Another Lesbian Relationship thread, but that’s only on the front page because someone necro’ed it for whatever reason.
I’m guessing not many people go over to the Lore forums and read the discussions? They try and track all the ambient dialogues and differences over there to look for clues. Anyway…
- There is a new ship in the Zephyrite’s fleet that wasn’t there last year. It has a glowing door.
- The Zephyrites are trying to packing up a lot of supplies for their next destination. Said destination, judging by the supplies, is very far off, but it’s still unknown.
- Taimi said their cargo is giving off strange readings, and she wants to investigate, but the Zephyrites won’t allow Scruffy on board.
- Marjory and Kasmeer are possibly planning on sneaking Taimi onboard somehow.
- The Ministry Guard tried to arrest Heal-o-tron, even though he already paid for his “crimes” and he was a hero of the BoLA. The Ministry Guard work solely for the ministers.
There is also the possibly they are going to add additional dialogue as time goes by, like they use to do for the month long LSs.
Other than the Sylvari facing prejudice because of Scarlet, which we learned about just now during the festival, we found out about all the other stuff during the epilogue for s1.
We learned about the bandit activity during the meeting the at Dead End bar, since Marjory’s sister is a member of the Seraph going to investigate, and Laranthir was at LA during the epilogue. He’s the npc that gave the summery of what had happened to the place, and he gave alittle information of why he was there.
(edited by Erukk.1408)
Ya, the ambient dialogue seem to have more specific triggers this go around. I usually try to spend the first couple of days trying to listen to all of them, but it was only yesterday when I heard one between Kasmeer, Marjory, and Taimi on Cliffs I haven’t heard before. The one where Kasmeer and Marjory promise Taimi they’ll somehow sneak her and Scruffy on board the Sanctum, so she can take some more accurate readings.
And there was the picture for the Tier 1 foes released the other day, which does give their origin (“Hails from:”). And regarding that, this was brought to my attention by Thalador the other day, but Suriel comes from… Orr. And uses a “Book of Light” – which is interesting since Orr is Hebrew for “Light”. But it’s interesting, that she comes from Winterknell Shore. She’s also said to be “fanatical” and “worships light”.
Whoever designed her most likely drew inspiration from the angel bearing a similar name, Sariel.
This is the most concerning, and honestly saddening, statement for me. Is this really the direction the game is going to go? If so I know I won’t make it long and most certainly will not be spending cash on this game in the future. I hope this event was a mistake, but my head tells me that this is the direction the game is going. They can’t let players get too much loot because it hurts the cash shop. Too many players will have enough gold to trade for gems to buy the new items instead of using cash. Bottom line that is what I see and they won’t change that. I love (d) this game and played in every beta I could, stayed up late on release day, and have played many hours. I am truly saddened because I do feel the game I loved is gone.
Wasn’t that what players have been asking for since the marionette fight? Events where a bit of coordination and communication are needed for best results? Anet changed around the events when they added the Boss Blitz to do just this, but players are still zerging it, even though it was obviously designed not to be zerged.
And, I can understand why they took away most of the xp and loot from the events. There was a huge, huge, amount of inflation during last years QJ. If they allowed the same this year, it would put a huge strain on the Chinese trading post. Their trading post market is only a couple weeks old. Can you imagine what would happen if a huge gold injection was put into it this early? It would make the prices on everything ridiculously high, and it would screw any players that join after the QJ is over, since they weren’t able to farm during it.
The same goes with the xp issue. If they made lving too easy by zerging, all the Chinese players would just do that. They would just farm and zerg to 80 inside the pavilion, and they would completely bypass playing the actual game.
I can see them throwing dragon bash at us to buy them more development time
I don’t know. The first Dragon Bash had a lot of major LS plot points in it.
- Death of a LA Captain.
- First introduction of the Aetherblades.
- Introduction of Marjory.
- Kiel’s promotion to captain.
- Another hint of a puppet master pulling strings.
Yes, I know the last two technically belongs in Sky Pirates, but those two were a LS pair. Though I’d rather not have another festival right after this one, I could see them easily turning the next DB into a major LS element as well.

If Charr created guns, then why can’t I use guns with all charr regardless of its class ?
:)
“the team is also working very kitten finding a way to make it so that every profession has access to every weapon”

Mesmers wielding a hammer…. Now that’s a scary thought.
Those were there last time. Except for Trader Aerin, no NPC on the Sanctum itself has really changed, except for a couple of dialogues.
Was the sylvari npc labeled a Zephyrite last year though? Because I thought last year was the first time a member of the sylvari race met/seen the Zephyrites before. It would have been kinda weird if he instantly converted to the group right after they met.
I think I saw a sylvari and norn Zephyrites on the ship. I’ll have to check again to make sure.
Edit: Yes, there is at least one sylvari and one norn (not sure if he was there during the first event) Zephyrite on the Sanctum. So they did seem to return, or at least those ones did.
(edited by Erukk.1408)
One suggestion that I read and liked the potential of was Belinda Delaqua, Marjory’s Sister.
Probably a great way to tie Canach together with the Brisban investigation…
Hmm. I didn’t think of that. Let’s cross our fingers and hope.
I haven’t gotten a chance to play much, but Taimi said something about the Zephyrites getting prepared to go on a long voyage after they depart. She said they haven’t said exactly where though.
…..if I recall any of that right anyway.
In order to that they would have to greatly expand the city to at least 8 times the size and scope of Divinities Reach. I dont think that having a map that large will work very well unless that made it into several zones.
If they wanted to get around the spacing problem, they can always use something like the Mists/Fractals. They could get the Consortium to run the player/guild housing in LA, and they could explain it as the Consortium using Dessa’s research to stabilize much smaller empty fractals. They wouldn’t really have to add anything to LA, other than maybe a new type of Asura gate, because everything would be in instances.
It could also explain away a very wide and varied selection of housing, since the Mists can duplicate anything and everything.
achievements ARE made to zerg, have you ever seen any achievement in a LS that isn’t made to zerg…..
As LastShot said, none of the achievements in the previous BotFW were zerg related.
A game can’t have too many named npcs with the same exact VA.
Crispin Freeman’s all over the place in this game. Not that I mind, I just notice it.
His IMBb and the wiki list him only voicing three character, and I can’t seem to remember any of the character’s names actually listed, so I’m think they are only minor characters.
Regardless, they have the same right to the land as any other. Many Tyrian races have made space for many others and allowed new settlement, particularly since the dragons rose, but this courtesy isn’t extended to all.
You don’t know that though.
And even if they did extent that courtesy, do you think the Dredge would have actually excepted it? Their entire culture’s xenophobic nature wouldn’t work in their favor at all. Not to mention, the Moletariate probably wouldn’t allow it, since it could give way to their people mixing with the other races culturally. That might expand their mental horizons on how people should be allowed to live, and that might lead to questioning of the Moletariate’s leadership. Something they would never allow.
Personally, I think you are absolutely wasting our time. I (we) play for fantasy —> beasts, dead things chasing us, shiny objects that cost a lot, saving the world. Come on! Real life things happen all day. Give us content to play and use the LS to get us to it, period. Nobody actually cares that much. Give us more dungeons and paths. Give us end game content. Fantasy and relevant stuff. Stick to it and you will win.
So, you would rather have an ultra-generic storyline if it meant more content? What’s the point of making a storyline at all, if people just want more loot? It’s like the ultimate downfall of any type of fantasy game.
Player 1: Hey! They finally added more content. An evil guy is doing evil thing. We should kill him!
Player 2: Why?
Player 1: Because he drops loot.
Player 2: No, I meant why is he evil?
Player 1: Idk. He killed some people I guess. Who cares though. Shiny!
That would kill any interest I had in the game.
It’s sometimes much cheaper to buy the skins off the trading post. They are plenty expensive still, but it’s cheaper to convert straight to gold, than it is buying all those keys and crossing your fingers and hoping the RNG gods smile upon you.
The Priory and Dredge are opposing factions. If you have done the Norn PS, you would have saw the Dredge launch assaults on Priory bases, attacked and killed a Vigil squad to test their sonic weapons, and they also attacked the Priory HQ directly solely to kill Ogden Stonehealer. They viewed all the other Priory members guilt of death for harboring a dwarf, who they view as “oppressor”.
The Dredge aren’t a innocent race of ex-slaves anymore. They have largely became a xenophobic race of expansionists, constantly fighting to claim more land.
(edited by Erukk.1408)
Mr. Googly Eyes? (I swear his eyes crossed every once and awhile during the cinematic dialogues.)
His VA was nice, but if they do bring him back, they would probably tweak his voice a bit. If only to offer up a bit of difference from his previous character. A game can’t have too many named npcs with the same exact VA.
Obviously, Anet hooked up Ree and Jeff to computers, and they are holding them in isolation pods, so they can harvest all their thoughts and ideas for future future lore.
In the lore, Ritualists are unique to Cantha. No Cantha, no Rit, unless I miss my guess.
Somewhat. After Factions, several Ritualists traveled to Tyria and taught their arts to others, hence guardians and necros picking up some of their spells, but most of the master Tyrian Ritualists trainers died with the destruction of LA, during the rise of Orr, I believe.
So, now they are unique to Cantha again, but there is precedence of that class being taught in other lands for a period of time. If they ever decide to introduce the class again, I can see them probably taking the Death Knight approach from WoW, and the Ritualists would get their own starting intro, regardless of race, probably of them being taught under a master ritualist.
Lore-wise, Zhaitan was in no way easy to kill though, cheshirefox. That was in battle mechanics only, with us spamming a single button to kill him. Prior to that, the whole campaign in Orr was about systematically weakening him.
We thinned his Risen numbers, took control of the temples to lessen his influence in the land, cut off food by taking care of his “Mouth”, destroyed some of his “Eyes”, either destroyed the supplier of dead bodies or the place he corrupted them, took away his control of his own navy, and last but not least, we started to process to cleanse the very land itself. That’s only the stuff I can list off the top of my head, as well.
So the battle itself might have been easy, since we basically hamstringed him, sewed his eyes and mouth shut, tied his arms behind his back, and let him starve for a bit, but getting there not so much lore-wise.
As for my own thoughts on the antagonist matter, I think a lead dragon champion would fit the best, with its Elder Dragon master being the alien force/puppet master. They could have gotten good results if they had expanded the role of the Sovereign Eye of Zhaitan. They could have introduced him during the Battle for Claw Island, killing your mentor, and they could have fitted him in throughout the storyline afterwards.
It would have given your character more of a personal reason to continue fighting, and the Eye would have provided a good creepy and mocking villain throughout the rest of the PS. The conclusion would be us finally killing him during the cleansing of Orr mission, and we would have moved to finally kill his master afterwards.
I would support the recurring cast approach.
Let the characters have their fun in the sun, but they need to fade out after awhile to make way for new characters. They can come back at times, when that character would suit the storyline, but they shouldn’t be forced into it just because they are the main character at the moment.
(edited by Erukk.1408)
Monks… …well, monks have changed so much that the don’t exist any longer.
Actually, they still very much exist in lore. Anet just didn’t want them as a playable profession, since they were moving away from the trinity. That’s why some of their spells got subsumed into guardians and such.
I’d be more supportive of this idea if I haven’t seen missions fail to start because NPCs just don’t spawn (twice in two weeks with Balthazar already, leaving people unable to get trait unlocks or buy obsidian for days at a time). Forcing failure is simply a bad idea, Anet needs to fix whatever bug prevents mission-critical NPCs from spawning, set a timer that automatically resets missions if they don’t progress for an hour, or just make the trait unlock upon successful defend instead.
The trait unlock for Straits is the grand chest in the ship of sorrows, not Bal’s temples.

The developers are heads-down working on the future content releases. We are also in the middle of launching the game in China. Launching a game in a new country is kind of a big deal. Because of the team’s focus on game development, they are not able to dedicate as much time out of their workday to posting on the forums. While they might have time to read the forums, they don’t necessarily have time to engage in discussion.
I know it’s hard to be patient in this down time between Living World seasons, but please bear with us. As much as you’re craving new content to play, the team is dying for you to play it.
Unfortunately, I can’t give you any information about future content, whether it’s plot spoilers or timeline. I can say that, as a player, I am very excited about the next season, and I cannot wait to see what you all think about it.
Please know that your feedback continues to be important, our devs are still reading (though they may not have time to respond), and we sincerely appreciate your support and you sharing all your thoughts with us (critical or otherwise).
They are currently working on the second season of the LS as we speak, but they are waiting to get the Chinese release out of the way before the start it up again
As others have said, they would have to revamp the whole class, since aspects of it can be seen in engineers, guardians, and necromancers.
That being said, I would totally play a Charr ritualist!
