Personal story is about the Elder Dragons. The Living Story is going to center around other threats, like our upcoming nemesis. If all the world’s problems somehow boiled down to “The Elder Dragon did it!”, the GW2 storyline would be d.o.a.

As for the quote from the prisoner, you have to remember that the Flame Legion is beyond arrogant. These are the same people that were trying to make their own god, out of one of their own members, to worship. They think they can out survive everyone, because they think they are that much better than them.

Braham’s father expressly forbade anyone, including Braham, from contacting Eir after his death. So you can’t really pull the horrible mother card out, when she had no idea. If she did know, she would have taken him in. It’s in her nature. Now though, she’s in a hard place for a mother. Braham is almost of age, and while she wants what’s best for him (being safe and not risking your life); she really can’t tell him what to do. Not to mention, they don’t have much of a relationship to build trust on yet.

Borje, Braham’s father, had the right idea though. Can you imagine Destiny’s Edge in their glory days with a 10-12 year old tag along? They probably wouldn’t have even existed, because Eir wouldn’t have formed it. She would have likely stayed in Hoelbrek to raise Braham. That and fighting the Elder Dragons and their champions… not the best place to raise a child.

“Sweetie. You stay here, while mommy and her friends fight the giant crystal dragon out to destroy the world. Watch out for its breath… and its tail. Everyone forgets about that. In case we all wipe and die, leaving you an orphan, you know your way home right?”

I don’t see anyone from the Consortium being the personal nemesis. They all seem more money hungry than power hungry. If anything, I’m thinking that she (the personal nemesis) used them, or possibly still using them, just as much as she used the Molten Alliance. A means to and end. The difference being on how they are used.

The Alliance was used for the big stuff like acting cities and creating the fusion weapons. The Consortium on the other hand is used for the more subtle machinations, and they can work openly in the cities since that are “legal”.

Though now that I think about it, I’m wondering if the whole Molten Alliance was just a HUGE decoy for something else…

Since the Sylvari draw a lot of inspiration from Irish and Celtic folklore, I never really hard a problem with the Pale Tree’s avatar. We aren’t saying he isn’t bad. We’re just saying he isn’t the moustache twirling evil villain that most people believe he is. It’s all about the shades of grey. Minus him possibly enslaving souls, which probably deals with his kind of necromancy, all the characteristics you listed are shared by most of the ancient conquering rulers/warlords. Even the popular ones like Alexander the Great.

He left rivers of blood wherever he went, and he sold whole tribes into slavery when they opposed him. He also sold the entire population of Thebas into slavery as well. All to help pay for his war campaign, and you know… they resisted him. He could be easily called a monster by most people of today. Yet back then, it was just how they did things, and he is still called “the Great” by everyone today.

It’s all about perception in the end.

I don’t see the Pact moving against Palawa unless he moves against them first. The Pact can only exist through the support of the three Orders and the different racial nations. Like it or not, Palawa is the ruler of Elona. If the Pact moves against him without provocation, using resources given to them by Kryta and/or the nations; it could pull everyone into a political conflict. Which is not something to be taken lightly.

The Order of Whispers on the other hand, will probably have a field day sabotaging him with the player’s support.

As long as they don’t overkill it like WoW did with the Old Gods, I’m hoping for a nice Lovecraftian vibe to the DSD. I am wondering how it is actually going to look though, a dragon based in the regions of the deep sea/ocean.

Is it going to have wings, or are they going to be replaced with something more like fins? On that note, if the DSD had to leave the water, could it actually fly, or is it a solely water based dragon?

Bioluminescent, yea or nay?

And finally, are tentacles going to be part of the dragon’s design? Every time I think about that, all I can think of is sharktopus. That scares me, and not in a good way either.

I doubt we will be seeing them anytime soon, since they still need to work on a bunch of stuff before even coming to those. From what we seen about the April patch, with the way they are working the private pvp arenas, they could build on those features when making the guild halls. Just much larger, guild specific, permanent, and less pvp. Though, a small free-for-all pit arena would be a nice addition.

If they ever get around to housing and halls, I do wish they would add another crafting discipline to make furniture. That and maybe a dyeing function to said furniture too, since I seem to be making a wish list…

Without an ascended individual, he could be floating along the Krytan countryside with us none the wiser. If I had to guess anything, he probably has a couple of cat’s paws or puppets doing his biding, and we’re more likely to find and kill them, before Lazarus comes out from behind the curtain.

And when he does come back, I kind of want there to be a cut scene where he downs all the players in a single attack. Then he proceeds to kill the living story hero with spectral agony.

You know… to show that he’s back in full force, and there is every reason to utterly fear him.

If Cantha was in from the beginning, and was a big part of the start of the game, new players, that haven’t played gw1, could mistake gw2 as just another Asian grinder MMO and not buy it. Them keeping the visual styles “universal” they would be able to draw in more of an audience.

Once they got a big enough player base, and when it would fit lore; I can easily see us going back to Cantha and Elona as well.

As for the Great Collapse part, it allows them to test out more styles for the Cantha architecture, since I guess China and Korea didn’t agree with theirs. When they come out with a (possibly China and Korea approved)new one, they can transfer that art style to Cantha itself.

Cantha

Erukk.1408

What exactly do you mean with “what word”?

If you mean if we will go there, apparently not soon as for what I know the publisher prefers to get rid of it for now (something about not wanting asian typical representations or stereotypes, not sure of the details), I think it was even the reason behind the Canthan District in Divinity’s Reach being replaced by a big giant hole.

For the question, other than a few (half?)dead sailors, we have no information on Cantha.

And I cringe every time someone bring up that “Ridding of Cantha” topic. No publisher is ever going to write off a huge portion of their game like that. There is a big difference between “not wanting Asian stereotypes and representations” and outright banning Cantha, because they are afraid of the former. The different being good writing.

The probably didn’t want to bring Cantha in right from the beginning, for the same reasons they didn’t bring in Elona. It doesn’t make sense lore wise, and like any MMO; they want to stretch their production, story, and expansions over years.

As for the Great Collapse, it gave them an excuse to redo that area again (possibly transferring that style over to a future Canthan expansion as well), and they can give possibly foreshadowing into Cantha too. In-game reasons for the collapse are said to be “hasty construction”. Kaineng City suffers from something similar.

After the Jade Wind, the city had to expand basically overnight to take in the refugees. It expanded so much, it takes up a very good portion of Cantha itself. After awhile, I can see portions of that city falling into disrepair and possibly collapsing like the district did. It seemed to be starting already judging by some of the areas in Factions.

Now add a couple of centuries of that, possibly angry assimilated Luxons and Kurzicks, a nation of xenophobia, the Ministry of Purity, some political intrigue by way of the Emperor, and a dash of Elder Dragons, you can get a really good expansion.

Plus, we could possibly see some Ministry of Purity vs. Elder Dragon and their corruption.

Guild Bounties Now Punish Smaller Guilds

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Erukk.1408

Erukk.1408

It is a lot harder to go these with smaller guilds. My guild, mostly RL friends and family, only has about 20 or so members, and maybe 15 of them do guild content. That is the absolute max at times, given everyone’s work schedule and real life. We usually only get maybe 10 or so members being able to do them as a given time.

Large guilds can get away with it when members can’t log on, smaller guilds not so much. Two or three people can’t be on? Well… there goes a good chuck of your dps, and we’ll have an even harder time locating bosses now.

It doesn’t help the smaller guilds either, when you keep adding more bounties into the equation…

They should just split up the bounties, either by difficultly (in path or combat) or just randomly. Tier 1 gets these bosses this week. Tier 2 gets these bosses, an Tier 3 gets these. It would help the smaller guilds better divide their numbers to finding them, and it wouldn’t effect the large guild at all. They have the numbers to easily flood an area with people to search for them. Smaller guilds don’t have that option.

That or just bring back guild alliances. That would solve the problem as well.

What exactly is Nightmare?

in Lore

Erukk.1408

If the Dream of Dreams is connected to the Mists, could it be connected to the Mists’ creative properties? I kind of got that idea when I was reading Razah’s Nightfall’s description from the wiki.

“The protomatter that makes up the Mists strains toward creation, often spawning demonic creations in nightmarish forms. Not all creatures from the Mists are demonic, however. When the Mists come into contact with a suitable human template, for example, it can copy that form, creating a sentient entity with humanoid appearance and an almost human mind.

Razah is one such creation. It has sprung into being a fully-formed adult. It has the knowledge and capabilities of a human, but lacks common sense. As a result, it asks odd questions about human emotions, contemplates human motivations, and attempts to duplicate human mannerisms. Razah is a contradiction: more than human in some ways, and less than human in others. It needs an identity, a personality, and a purpose. Hopefully, it will find its purpose by working with a hero. Otherwise, it could degenerate into an abomination as monstrous and inhuman as its demonic brethren. "

The Pale Tree(s) could have possibly pulled a Yggdrasil, and connected to the Mists. The Pale Tree was then able to provide a constant human template, which the Mists/Dream used when shaping the Sylvari. The Sylvari then would be born in Tyria, after they are fully formed.

As for the Nightmare, that is always a constant in the Mists. I think the Nightmare Court however fall into the, “Hopefully, it will find its purpose by working with a hero. Otherwise, it could degenerate into an abomination as monstrous and inhuman as its demonic brethren.” part.

The Sylvari that we know, since we know next to nothing about the other Pale Tree, were provided the Ventari Tablets and its teachings, which gave them a purpose since birth. Those that disregarded its teachings, even more so from a young age, are more susceptible to the Nightmare and falling into “degeneration”.

What I kind of want to know, is what the relationship between the Order of Whispers and Palawa when it comes to Elder Dragons? He could be a HUGE asset to have against them, but they still see him as a threat to Elona, since that was one of the reasons they were created for…

The Cleansing of Orr

It kind of depends on the level and depth of corruption, since Zhaitan has been sitting in Orr for a good century, spewing out corrupted magic. The cleansed Artesian Waters could take a good couple of years, if not maybe decades, to cleanse all of Orr.

As for southern Orr, it’s up what they are going to do with Palawa Joko. Is he going to be a bad guy we have to kill, or a bad guy we have to work with, like in gw1. Because now that Zhaitan is gone, I can see him going, “Oh look, free land!”, and trying to claim it as his own.

If they do get around the changing the whole area, I would like to see something done with the temples, maybe them getting claimed by the Pact/High Priests. They would have to open up more areas/zones to move those chest events though.

Hmm…

Do we know any organizations, groups, or entities that could pull off an manipulation of this scale off? Getting the Dredge to attack the Norn, or the FL to attack the Charr, is one thing, but getting them to do it together, at the same time, would take a big outside influence.

It’s hard to make too many predictions, since gw2 is relatively new, and we don’t know many bad guys outside the racial ones and the dragons. The bad guy(s) pulling the strings could be anyone or a total unknown.

Though, I kind of hope we don’t find out, since the living stories could use a constant antagonist. Bad Guy of the month, or months in this case, would get pretty old. If it’s going to be a living story, I’d rather it follow an actually story arc. Us having a set antagonist outside the Elder Dragons would help said story arc. It would also give us something to do between dragons as well.

Maybe sprinkle a few clues for us lore nerds, but save the actually identity for later, after further use.

I guess I stated it weirdly, probably should have expanded on that as well, when I said, “Them sending Ogden to the Priory…”, and I’m sorry for that. I meant that in the sense that, while he decided to go to the Priory on his own, it was probably with the support of the other dwarves of the collective dwarf mind, since it served a duel purpose.

Ogden can use the Priory’s resources for his own research on the Elder Dragon, and the elder races that fought against them. He is also one of the top members of the Priory, the seat of intellectual knowledge of Tyria, meaning he can read up on and review most of their research, especially the reports regarding the dragons.

The wouldn’t mean much if he was an average person, but Ogden is a member of a collective consciousness. A collective consciousness made up of a race actively fighting against an Elder Dragon, and also the best craftsmen Tyria has ever know. What they could possibly do with the knowledge of the Priory is mind boggling…

Though of course, the last part is all wild speculation of mine, since I doubt they are going to turn the dwarves in fantasy Borg. No matter how much fun that would be.

In the end, while the dwarves might have gained a sense of individuality back, they are still a single part of a whole. That being the collective consciousness. All thoughts and actions probably lead to a single destination… the total destruction of the Elder Dragons.

Whether that would be saving Glint’s babies… Future possibly allies against the dragons.

Or collecting destroyer cores… Which can be researched to help craft better weapons to be used against them.

The Mursaat

Erukk.1408

Just a race of “in the shadows backstabbers/genocide causers” kinda like a whole races of Menzies’. Sadly though, genocide seems to be somewhat acceptable in Tyria as long as you face your enemy directly. I mean no one is putting the Charr or the Humans down for warcrimes…

Not that I support or approve of what the Mursaat did to the Seers, we still don’t know really anything about the cause of their war, or even when it exactly happened (though we can get a couple educated guesses about when). Until we know all of this, it’s a little too easy to label the Seers the innocent little snowflakes, and the Mursaat evil genociding wrongdoers.

Ree Soesbee: There have been a lot of questions about the Seers and their ancient war with the mursaat. Sadly, these aren’t questions we can answer at great length without giving away some very deep secrets of the Guild Wars world. I can say that they are one of the oldest races of Tyria, dating back long before the Gods brought the humans to the world; to the time of the writing of the Tome of Rubicon. In those ancient days, the Seers fought against the mursaat, but they were in turn defeated by their enemies, and their civilization lost to the ravages of time.

The bolded part kind of suggests there might be more to the Seer/Mursaat war than we might think. Though I would speculate, it would be around the creation of the Bloodstone, since that was one of the big reveals in Arah. Making an object that can absorb, contain, and seal away all the (uncorrupted) magic of an entire continent, and possibly the world?

That doesn’t take power, that takes POWER power. We haven’t seen anyone or anything doing something like that or of that magnitude since.

True.

They were pretty single minded after the rite was first performed. Maybe once the effects of the Rite of the Great Dwarf settled in, they were able to gain some sense of individuality back. Ogden seemed to anyway, in that he isn’t talking like a Borg drone…

Their agenda is still the destruction of the dragons, but they are now able to use their group mind to full effect, instead of just using it to move tactical against the destroyers. Them sending Ogden to the Priory was probably the best move they did. It will be interesting to finally see them again. Weird, but interesting.

I’m hoping its the dwarves forcing the two to combine forces.

Unless their group mind, if I remember that right anyway (it’s been awhile since I played that part of gw1), changed over the last 200+ years, the only thing the stone dwarves care about is the total destruction of the destroyers and Primordius. I don’t see them getting involved unless something really bad is going down between the Molten Alliance and Primy.

If that is true though, what’s with the sudden change of mind? It’s been states by numerous npcs, that the Dredge are trying to move to the surface, or “pull an Asura”. Most likely to escape the increasing presence of Primy and his/its(?) destroyers in the depths of Tyria.

Hopefully the Alliance is just an alliance of convenience, and not something stupid like: “Hey! Lets harness the powers of an Elder Dragon and its minions, because we know nothing bad can come from that…”. Accidently created a mechanical Charr destroyer abomination… with a sonic cannon attachment!

Since both races are speculated to be near extinction, or possibly outright extinct in the Seers case, that would be kind of hard to do. Unless it would be Lazarus vs. the last Seer, one on one, Mortal Kombat style, with infusion to be fair.

It would be fun for the players that haven’t played gw1 to get a taste of the mursaat’s spectral agony, outside of FotM, since I can easily see Lazarus’ return get a multi-month living story arc. White Mantle army, with jade constructs to bolster their forces, raiding Kryta.

I’m kind of iffy on this subject. While I would very much love for them to be a playable race, since they were my favorite race in gw1, they are simply too powerful lore wise for that to happen.

Norn are MUCH stronger than humans…
Charr are much stronger than humans…
Asura are much smarter than humans…
Sylvari are… hmm… uncorruptable than humans…?

The mursaat can still kill them all with basically a single glance. Heck, their jade creations can kill them all as well. For them to become a playable race, Anet would have to overhaul the entire race while keep the bare bones the same. Then, they would have to explain their evil acts in gw1, like they did with the Charr. Though to be fair, almost anything can beat the Charr’s whole “Abaddon made us do it” excuse. It seemed almost all the bad guys got to use that in gw1.

Some players would still be kitten that if they get included as a playable race, because they see the playable races as the “good guys”, and the Mursaat are so clearly bad guys to them. I would argue that without the unifying force of the Elder Dragons; the playable races wouldn’t nearly be a peaceful with another as they are now, if not outright at war with one another.

What did Kormir do as a god?

in Lore

Erukk.1408

Kormir did gain all the knowledge of Abaddon, I’m guessing he had knowledge on something of even greater concern then the Elder Dragons, and my guess would be whatever drove the gods and humans to Tyria in the first place.

“Among them was Abaddon—once secret-keeper, now betrayer. How you have fallen from the glorious days of old. What passed beyond in the Mists, only you remember.

The first day of Kormir’s godhood, after all the new powers and knowledge got settled of course, was probably relaying to the other gods some of the secrets Abaddon kept, and for them to plan for the future with the new knowledge.

And since I am here.. The gods left Tyria long ago Due to Abbadons treachery and the War that He and his followers instigated. After striking him down, The gods left and so began the Exodus which is where the Tyrian years get their Abbreviation of A.E.

There’s no other pressing matter and no relation to the elder dragons that caused them to take their absence.

I wasn’t really talking about it being the cause of their absence. I’m simply speculating that Kormir might have the knowledge of what caused the gods and humans to come to Tyria in the first place, and she might have relayed that info to the other gods. It’s hard to tell, since Lyssa’s scroll in the Orrian History Scrolls is kind of ambiguous on that part…

“The two who are one, Issa and Lys,[sic] brought with her the hope and beauty of humanity. While the other gods focused on building Arah and beginning a new future, Lyssa gave them joy and helped them forget the past.

That could be taken a lot of ways: either she helped the humans forgot, she helped the gods forgot… or both. Abaddon retained that knowledge, and Kormir gained it when she took his mantle of god of knowledge/secrets.

Dessa would say she discovered a new fractal that is causing a large disturbance, and you would have to investigate it… at your own risk.

Like for Zhaitan, what if it was able to take down the Glory of Tyria after the first laser? You, your party, and Destiny’s Edge now have to face down the dragon head on, without the support of the Pact and its weaponry.

The reward for completion would be a unique high end weapon like GW1’s destroyer/tormented/oppressor weapons.

Since we don’t know which direction the next expansion is going, it’s kind of hard to say which ones might be likely. But if I had to choose, I would wish from them to bring back the chronomancer and summoner idea they were going to add into gw:U.

Plus, heavy armored chronomancer sounds really interesting.

why does everyone hate trahearne?

Hate is too strong of a word for me to use for him. It’s more of a general apathy for me. Most of the complaints I have against him were already listed by others: lack of character depth, bland personality, and Mary-Sue-ish qualities. Not to mention the whole…

Trehearne: I don’t want to be leader.
Pale Tree: It is your destiny.
Trehearne: Ok, I’ll be leader! What should we do next commander?
Me: /facepalm

If he is going to be a major character for the remainder of the game, they really really need to expand on him, and give his character some depth. I don’t mind playing the role of henchman in a MMO, but I’d much rather be a henchman to an interesting character/leader.

The six gods are too big of an plot element of Tyria as a whole to not get a storyline. Maybe not now, but sometime in the distant future. Which humans would get a key role in.

As for the fate of Trahearne…

I would prefer he get abducted by the Nightmare Court. Then maybe they can break him mentally, to make him susceptible to the nightmares of the Dream. Anything to add to is bland personality…

I already put three up, but another I’d like to add are the Mist born human-ish beings like Razah. They would be an interesting addition, and since the are only made by templets; they can have all sorts of weird and awesome stuff in their character creation.

How do enchanted weapons drop bones?

How do jellyfish drop scales?

How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop?

Tyria will never know…

Not since Jennah start the Charr/Human peace negotiations, no. When she recognized the Charr nation, and the land it holds (Ascalon), she basically gave up any of her rights to the throne of Ascalon. If she tries to claim it afterwards, that action will most likely break the treaty, and that will give the Charr the right to go to war to protect their land.

Sure, someone might try to claim it without her approval, but then she would have to cut ties with that person/group. The whole, “That person/group’s actions in no way reflect our thoughts and feelings on the matter. He/she is a rogue element, and all his/her actions happened without my approval”, type of thing. Because anything less with risk breaking the treaty with the Charr, which would most likely lead to war.

To be perfectly honest, I wouldn’t mind if humans don’t get an Elder Dragon all to themselves, since the other races kind of need them to build on their lore. The humans don’t need one because they had all of gw1, and they’ll get the whole Silence of the 6 Gods storyline all to themselves.

That might include return trips to the Underworld, Fissure of Woe, the Realm of Torment, and other realms if the other gods have their own as well. Plus, whatever drove the gods and humans to Tyria in the first place, but I’m guessing they might save that for after the Elder Dragons.

Bloodstones and how they influence Magic

A world can change a great deal in 200 years, just look what happened to ours from the 19th century to present day. Awesome and absolutely terrifying things happened in that small amount of time. Now add magic to the mix, and the progression of Tyria is entirely possible.

Suspension of Disbelief or Secondary Belief?

From what I remember of EotN, the destroyers were only a true threat when there is something leading their hive mind. Once the Great Destroyer are killed, they turned mostly mindless, relying only on their instincts for the most part. Which was probably the only reason there aren’t more pockets of them on the surface of Tyria. The dwarves were able to easily cull their numbers before Primordus woke up.

Sorry for the off topic question ahead of time, but didn’t the dwarves get something akin to a hive mind as well, after they completed the ritual of the stone dwarf? It’s been awhile since I played EotN, and I remember some of the companions speculating on their “one mindedness” towards the destruction of the destroyers.

Possibly Royal Illegitmate Child(ren)?

It seems the “B” word for illegitmate children gets edited, anyway…

I came across this interesting conversation at the end of “The Sad Tale of the ‘Ravenous’” human storyline…

Scholar Josir: We can’t allow anything to happen to Queen Jennah. She’s the last of the royal line!

Agent Ihen: Perhaps not the last…but you’re right. Without Queen Jennah, we’d lose our treaty with the Charr

Not all that surprising, given how royal families act, and the story of Queen Salma. Queen Jennah has no heirs though, and she seems to keep Logan at arm’s length most of the time.

So, possibly future storyline? Interesting tidbit of information either way.

Lore Strength =/= Gameplay Strength

All of it gets dumbed down to fit in the constraints of the gameplay mechanics, and to make the fights actually fair. The Elder Gods could probably kill just about anyone, with a breathe in their general direction.

The same goes for the norn’s physical strength, and Destiny’s Edge’s collective strength as a group.

We never did find out what the mursaat did with Saul did we? I wonder if they will ever get around to telling us his ultimate fate, though I’m wondering if they needed him for something else. Because if he outlived his usefulness, the mursaat would have killed him then and there.

Yes, they were the evil villainous race at the beginning of gw1. What with them udderly destroying the southern Ascalon region, trying to wipe out or enslave any survivors, or you know… eating them. They were being lead my the flame shamans after all. The race didn’t get its morally shades of grey until Eotn.

I’d rather not get into the “X was owned my Y” war of territory. Because originally, all of Tyria was held by the old races, and I doubt any of the new races will move if a forgotton slithers up and hands them an eviction notice.
