I didn’t even think that “Jory” could have been a female name or nickname. I blame Dragon Age for that, since their Jory is the only character I could remember with that name. It’s very interesting none the less.
I guess it’s another name to put on the possible Personal Nemesis list. It doesn’t help matters at all, when they describe her as “person of interest” and “mysterious” right off the bat.
I’m personally hoping for Mordremoth, since it’s about to wake up. Attacking Lion’s Arch would be a great way to introduce him. That and, I really don’t see Bubbles as being the fly over type.
I wonder if the Dragon(Bash) Festival is going to turn into Tyria’s version of Christmas on Doctor Who…
They must have all fell into the hole the developers dug themselves into with these Southsun patches…
They should stop with the bi-weekly, or bi-monthly (however you prefer) updates, period. If they put that big of a time constraint on themselves, all we get are half finished slapdash content updates like this Southsun one.
I’d much rather wait a month or two for a nice complete, polished, update
I rather not have another Destiny’s Edge-style group. We already have DE to deal with all the Elder Dragons. We don’t need mini-DE to deal with all the Living Stories as well. I don’t mind them introducing new characters in the LS. I just don’t want them to pull focus onto them.
The Living Story is suppose to be about the world, and the world doesn’t revolve around a single small group of people. It’s bad enough we already have DE…
I really don’t think they changed Adelbern all that much. He just grew old, and his mind was probably slipping towards the end. The 20 year outright war, the time between the Searing and the Foefire, against the Charr didn’t help his mind either. He was 78-79 when he died.
He might have seemed fine at the end of The Last Day Dawns, but then you need to add the stress of another 10-15+ years of war to get to him at the Foefire. All of his soldiers and countrymen slowly getting picked away, attack after attack, battle after battle by the Charr.
I really can’t blame him for going insane at the end. Plus with him being in his late 70s, and him thinking that Rurik’s still alive sometimes, I wouldn’t be surprised if he developed Alzheimer’s or something.
Yes, I stand corrected. Those are the Blood Legion homelands now. The original Charr homelands are still east of the Blazeridge Mountains though.
No longer clamoring over the same territories, the unified Charr spread throughout the northern reaches of their homeland, and down into the lands east of the Shiverpeak Mountains. The Charr subjugated or destroyed any and all who dared defy them within their territories; they were masters of all they surveyed.
That’s from the Ecology of the Charr. That statement also implies that they conquered the sentient races in the area, to claim it as their own. If it was really a no mans lands, there would be no need to “subjugate or destroy any and all who dared to defy them”.
It’s an old Asuran settlement, dating back to sometime when Orr was still thriving. As for why it was abandoned, we have no idea, though I could be wrong. The Asura had contact with humans before GW:EotN. It is just that they lost contact over the centuries, and weren’t seen above ground, that humans started thinking they were a myth.
As Aaron said, Ascalon was never Charr land originally either. They came in and conquered the area from another race, so you can’t really use the homeland excuse. Another reason you can’t is that excuse, is because you can actually see the Charr Homelands on the map. Its the green area, above the Ascalon region, in the far NE corner.
Also, the Ascalonian humans held that area for over a thousand years before the Searing. Any land rights the Charr held for it, are long since dead and ancient memories. It would be like Mongolia saying that all the land their empire held, 700-800 years ago, justly belong to them, just because they once owned it.

Unless Zhaitan isn’t dead! O.O
The Zhaitan we killed turned out to be a powerful illusion, and when he fell into the fog/mist below; that was when it shattered. It would be horrible story writing, but I would still laugh pretty hard, if that was the case.
The minions wouldn’t really be able to do anything, since they are susceptible to the other Elder Dragon corruption (as shown by Subject Alpha). The Elder Dragons bringing them to arms against one another, would just add too much confusion to the battlefield. All those voices in a minion’s head, would make their actions…. unpredictable.
Because the Charr are cute, fluffy, and can do no wrong? They would especially never nuke an entire region, then try to enslave the remaining populace… Never…
/sarcasm
As for why they are considered bad guys, is because their story is mostly told from the Charr’s PoV. The Charr really don’t consider anything they did to the Ascalonian human as bad, or how their 20 year war might have driven the king to an act of madness, like unleashing the Foefire.
I can agree with that. I wonder if he’ll be part of the new Destiny’s Edge alongside Braham and Rox. He has that ‘will do what’s necessary’ vibe.
I’m kinda iffy on that. While I like the idea of them joining together to fight something like the Personal Nemesis, I’m not sure about the “new Destiny’s Edge” idea. We already have a group of npcs to deal with the dragons. I’d rather not have another group to deal with all the living story stuff as well. Let us, the players, do something sometimes.
Though, I do hope they expand on the story of Canach and Kiel. Canach needs some better treatment, since I do like where is character is going. I just (really really) don’t like where it’s at the moment, if that makes any sense at all. Kiel, on the other hand, needs more character depth. All she is right now is a no nonsense cop.
How is this thread different that the strongest Elder Dragon thread again?
The answer is the same as it was in the other thread. We have no idea. We have faced a weakened Zhaitan, and Destiny’s Edge went against Kralky, but other than that; we have little to no information in regards to Primordus’ or Jormag’s true strength.
And absolutely no info on Bubbles or Mordremoth either.
Canach: I needed to send Noll and his superiors a message, and these people needed hope. So I provided it.
Inspector Ellen Kiel: Well, that hope you provided left a trail of wreckage and broken bodies across my island.
Canach: It doesn’t matter. The last of these contracts will be destroyed and the settlers will be freed.
I think that puts Canach’s motives in prospective. He wants to free the settlers, but he doesn’t really care how his actions effect them, as long as he gets what he wants in the end. Even if his actions directly lead to their death.
I think one of the dialogues from Job-o-Tron sums it up nicely.
Tergvi: I’m no raider. I kill dangerous beasts and those who do evil. I defend the innocent.
Job–o–Tron: Updating–response: “Muderous–raider–with–delusions–of–grandeur.”
I wish they would put in more grindable weapon skins, like the ones from SAB. The content lately has been killing my will to log in, since all of it can be completed in a matter of hours. If they spaced out the content a bit, and maybe add some more free (grindable) weapon/armor skins, I wouldn’t mind logging to do those and the daily.
Cthulhu?

With the creatures from the depths, tentacles, and untold horrors, I was guessing something Lovercraftian as well.
I’m not sure how playing the role of peacekeeper is evil. Not to mention, the whole “us helping the Consortium” thing. If you have done the storyline, we are obviously helping the Lionguard, the SoS letters even says any volunteers are deputized, to keep the peace on the island.
As for the lore behind the supporter buff, it’s exactly the same thing. Both sides want you to take down the Instigators, because they are causing more chaos on the island. So there is no real supporting of either side, since both sides want the same thing.
Though, in the end, I guess many people will still want to side with the freedom fighter/extremist, because that role is so romanticized. “Rebel with a cause” and all. Let’s just all casually look away from the fact, that Canach knowingly put the health and lives of innocent settlers at risk with his actions, since there is no way to control the now enraged creatures.
I’m sure the settlers will take comfort in the fact that Canach is fighting for them. Even more so, when the Enraged Karka Queen is trying to kill everyone…
Oh, and i predict chests with RNG weapons that everyone will complain about
I’m not sure about the RNG chests. Since it’s probably going to be a holiday/living story like Wintersday, you will most likely be able to purchase the weapon skins (if there are going to be any, anyway) with some type of tokens.
Everyone will still complain about something though. That’s a given.
Would you have preferred a bikini version instead? Because nothing screams battle hardened female warrior/guardian, then some daisy dukes and a plate armored bra…
/sarcasm
I wouldn’t really mention sportsmanship in this type of thread. The better sportsman would just accept that there are also going to be sore losers, because that’s life. He/she wouldn’t go out of his way, to the forums, to post a thread about his/her repeated victories against said person.
Sportsmanship goes both ways.
I see them are morally corrupt business men/women, though not evil.
As for why they are exploiting the settlers, they are trying to at least break even on their “Southsun” project. They sunk a lot of money into trying to make it a vacation spot, which was a total failure. When the refugees came into Lion’s Arch from the Molten Alliance attacks, the Consortium saw an exploitable resource.
They played the “nice guy” role with offering the refugees supplies, resources, and a offering them a new ‘home’. All they needed in return, was for them to sign on the dotted line. Once they signed over most of their rights, the Consortium was then able to use them as they would.
As for why the Lionsguard can’t intervene, while probably a bit more than shady, the contracts the settlers signed were legal, and they were signed willingly.
You can’t stereotype all the non-human races like that though. They believe different things, and were raised in a totally different society, but each person is still a unique individual.
Some Sylvari don’t believe in upholding the teaching of Ventari’s Tablet to a ‘T’, but they don’t fall to the Nightmare…
Some Charr aren’t loyal to their warbands or Legions till death…
Some Asura don’t actively pursue knowledge…
And some Norn don’t seek to make a legend about themselves…
Just because they are in the minority, and they aren’t seen much be the players, doesn’t mean they don’t exist in lore.
The reason the Norn and Charr ran from the Molten Alliance is because they were using guerrilla tactics. They would come out of nowhere with either the flame shaman portals or Dredge tanks, ransack and destroy a settlement, and then they would disappear just as fast.
No matter how stronger both those races are, you can’t defend against such a quick and devastating assault. Not to mention, the MA was using their new hybrid technology to great use.
I think I’ll have to be neutral on this one, but favor the settlers.
Canach, while trying to free the settlers, knowingly put their lives as risk with his toxin, since there is no way to control the enraged creatures. He probably injured many and possibly killed a few. Any favorability points for him get negated because of that for me. If he would have stuck to attacking the Consortium itself, and its members, that would be something else entirely.
The situations between the Consortium and the Settlers gets murky. The Settlers on the island are the true victims of this story, but they did sign contracts with the Consortium. Contracts that they were not forced to sign against their will. They freely signed them for a new “home”. A horrible home, but a home none the less. If they didn’t like what the read in the contract, they shouldn’t have signed them.
It’s truly a pity that between all the groups of refugees, the Grawl, the Grawl, were the smart ones that didn’t trust the Consortium.
If I had my way, I would turn Canach over to the Lionguard, and the contracts would “mysteriously disappear” (by fireball) at sea.
Since there is confirmation that there will be no mutant hybrid children, I’m fine with the interspecies relationship idea. I’m really glad they didn’t go the “Everyone can magically breed with everyone!” route.
For one, it’s probably very much against the law to forcefully read the mind of a noble, much less the Legate Minister.
Second, since I doubt Jennah is ever going to outright kill him, none of the information obtained through such mentions can be used in court. The minister/judge in charge of the case will ask where you got the information of his supposed illegal activities, and you can only say, “Oh, I read it from his mind. He’s totally guilty…”. Against a highly respected minister like Beetlestone, they case will be thrown out right there.
Third, even if you did get the information they needed, Beetlestone is an expert of having cat paws, flunkies, and goons to take the fall for him. The human noble storyline goes in-depth about this.
The one thing I’m wondering is, why are beams of blue/white light breaking out from all over his body?
On the Lazarus front, she could possibly be a White Mantle member, and Lazarus’ puppet, if they go that route on her anyway…
Scott McGough did say we will be seeing more of her in future releases, on the SoS forums, so it could be possible. Though on the other hand, she has a bikini mini. That is a weird thing for the players to have of a highly manipulative, behind the curtain, nemesis.
Or an absolutely brilliant way to throw us off her trail….
Just goes to show us, how much the players have in common with the Skritt…
“Ohh….Shinies! Must have shinies…”
I’m willing to bet too, that once the next set of weapon skins come out, a good 50-80% of players aren’t even going to care about these ones.
I kind of want to know how Glint had children in the first place. To our knowledge, there isn’t another uncorrupted, not to mention male, crystal dragon out there to be her partner. Was she able to reproduce asexually?
I’d prefer an antagonist, rather than a villain, for the Personal Nemesis. Fantasy villains usually fall into the pitfall of insanity, and they are usually evil for the sake of being evil. Which isn’t much character depth on their part. Antagonists are a little more freed up motive wise. While they might be opposing the protagonist, their acts and/or motives aren’t necessarily evil.
Plus, Team Kefka! Because Sephiroth is overrated…
She’s been turned by the Dark Side.
She’s now Darth Attilla, okay the name needs work but it is rather spooky!
Ottilia the Hun maybe?
It does raise a lot of red flags though. A named npc that a main character is looking for? Flagged for importance. Main Character has possible crush or romantic intentions to npc? Flagged for strong emotion tie. Npc isn’t found during the freeing of prisoners? Flagged for involvement of future events.
I’m wondering on her age still. If she is a teenager/young adult, I don’t really see her being an evil mastermind behind the Molten Alliance, unless she was working for someone else. Though, I have thought of that. If she is maybe in her mid to late twenties or possibly older though… possibly.
I was kind of hoping for a Hitchhiker’s Guild to the Galaxy joke after I read the title…
So that’s what it looks like when you inject dragons into every aspect of a mmo for profits…
I’ll have to pass on that one. It’s interesting looking. I’ll give you that, but I would fear for the sanity of the fantasy playerbase, if that is suppose to be major competition for gw2.
The personal story constantly hinted the dragons were actually intelligent.
What I think would make them baddass is if they were given personalities and insidious motives, seeking a higher goal beyond the comprehension of Tyrians.
Even if the dragons are hellbent on destruction, they need quirks to make them recognized and unique. Kralkatorik for example has an obsession with perfection, but we never actually see him express his obsession.
Kefka for example was a great villain because he acted so utterly comical and absurd. Yet he poisoned a kingdom, destroyed the chance of peace between espers and humans, kills the emperor himself, becomes a god, then destroys the world.
And even when he achieved godhood, Square still gave him character by making him the ultimate sadist rather than simply being a force of destruction. He seeks to destroy everyone’s hope, yet he lets them live so that they may suffer.
Compare Kefka and Zhaitan, and you will see a huge difference.
Ah, good old Kefka. I miss him. He was, by far, the best Final Fantasy villain in my opinion. That beats Sephiroth as well. Him and his constant “mommy issues”.
Back onto the subject as hand, I wouldn’t might seeing something like a “Voice” of an Elder Dragon, to go along with the “Mouth” and “Eye” theme. It would be the servant that the Elder Dragon uses to literally speak to, and possibly manipulate, the lesser races.
As for the “end boss” fight, the first stage of the event could be against the Voice. The Elder Dragon would try and make you question your motives or even your allies. It has thousands of eyes though its servants, and has spied on you and your forces for a very long while, memorizing every single action you and your cohorts have undertaken.
And it will try and use every single thing to demoralize you.
Anything dealing with the Inquest for me, since I find them really interesting. They are racial enemy for the Asura, but yet they are still a fully functioning part of their society. If I had to pick one thing about them though, I would like more info regarding the projects they have undertaken for the Arcane Council.
Or on a non-Inquest related note, I would also like more info about the Idea Incubation Lab.
None of them knew about the dragons, not even Abbadon :P they all left because of the war between abbadon and the others gods, they caused too much damage
The gods probably did know about the Elder Dragons, since the Forgotten, one of the ancient races that fought them before, were devoted servants of the 6 gods. I would think that they would relay information dealing with gigantic creatures that might try to devour them, because they might find them magically delicious.
Rata Sum, hands down, for me. I loved the geometric design of it, the shiny ooze made flowers, and the magitech everywhere. Also, the banker/tp/guild stuff, as well as all the crafting stations, are all on the same level. A huge plus in my book.
Also, it’s a giant cube floating over a lake. You just can’t beat that.
Dhuum is likely the reason Mad King Thorn was absent for 250 years due to not wanting the dead souls to leave the Underworld.
The question now is: Why did Dhuum give Mad King Thorn permission to leave the Underworld permenantly(It would have been permenant if the Durmand Priory hadn’t reined him in limiting the Mad King to the terms of his ancient curse)?
I’m not sure about that. Dhuum is waging a war in the Underworld. I doubt he has much say, at all, on who can freely come and go from the Underworld, that is still Grenth’s decision. He, being Grenth, is the god of death and ruler of the Underworld after all.
Plus, Dhuum was the god of true death when he still had the mantle. He hated resurrections, the undead, and basically anyone who tried to get away from him (i.e. the players). I doubt he would tolerate Thorn, someone who died long ago, escaping from his Underworld to Tyria once a year. What’s dead stays dead.
This is one of the topics that has been kinda discussed to death. I would suggest using the “Search this Forum” tool too look up the other threads.
Like I tell my guildies, they have said it’s on the list, but it’s probably towards the bottom. They need to get all the bare bones of the game done, and flesh them out, before they start adding all the bells and whistles.
I’m not putting any hopes on getting them anytime soon. I’m personally thinking they will probably get released with the next expansion, since that would be an excellent advertisement for it.

We can’t leave out the possibility that a member of another race might join Destiny’s Edge. A Tengu being an easy example. From what we see in Kessex Hills; there is a chance of them getting a destroyer problem in the future. Unless of course, they already have one, since we have no idea what is going on in the Dominion of Wind atm.
Hmm, good point on resources in Southsun. Take note: The Molten Alliance’s “new mysterious ore” is Azurite (or seems to be – those crystals being mined were the same color, and Azurite could only be obtained in MF). Now, what do we know about Southsun other than it being volcanic?
- It has Orichalcum – which is only found in Orr and in Jormag territory elsewhere (and the Mists)… and also Molten Facility.
- It has unique flora, which can be used for powerful items (Ascended gear). Dunno if the crafting bit of it is lore-wise too though.
- It has karka. Why’s this important in resources? Two reasons: 1) the webbing stuff the karka spit out hardens into material harder than steel (it’s what their shells and nests are made out of, and why the acid was needed in the Lost Shores content), so that’s pretty strong stuff – not picture obtaining that and crafting it into weaponry… 2) they keep folks away from what someone wanting to mine Southsun wants to mine.
So while maybe not intended to do originally, it’s possible that the personal nemesis either riled up the wildlife, or convinced someone to rile up the wildlife, so as to pit karka versus norn and charr (two of the strongest races) refugees, to get rid of both threats in the area, so that the personal nemesis can obtain the materials there with more ease (perhaps even kidnap a few karka hatchlings or eggs to raise to make that webbing materials).
That’s mostly along the lines that I have been thinking as well, as I stated earlier. Even if half of it is true, the Nemesis seems to be (hopefully) shaping up to be a good antagonist. With the Elder Dragons being spaced apart, the game needs a continuing bad guy(/girl) to keep the month to month story alive. I just hope she doesn’t fall into the classic fantasy villain pitfall… insanity.
The best antagonists are the ones that you can almost agree with.
Us not knowing what’s fully happening in the Living Story, is kind of the point. You can view it as a book, if you were. The Molten Alliance arc was the very first actual full Living Story, first few chapters of the book. It introduced some characters, some villains, gave a lot of foreshadowing, but by in large; we don’t have a good feel of the full scope of the story yet. Just like when you first read a book.
Once they release more Living Stories, more details on what is happening in Tyria will slowly filter back to us, and we will get a better feel on the story as it slowly builds. The thing is though, is that takes time to build up a good story. Players can’t expect a timeline on things to come for the next year, and all the information on who the next antagonist is… instantly. That would ruin the mystery and the story.
(edited by Erukk.1408)
I personally would rather NOT have all the storylines magically link back to the Elder Dragons somehow. The world (both Tyria and real) is filled with people with self interests, ones that won’t let the Elder Dragon stop them from getting their way. Why kill off their storylines just because it wouldn’t fit into the “Elder Dragons’ Overall Story Arc”?
One of the things that bugged me most about gw1’s storyline was Abaddon. I loved Khilbron and Shiro when I was playing though the game, with their motives and reasons for falling into madness, up until I played Nightfall. All their motives and reasoning that I liked about them? It all got replaced with “Abaddon made me do it!”. Even the Charr got that excuse with it comes to the Searing.
One thing I don’t hope that gw2 does, is give the same excuse to the bad guys.
“Well I know I’m bad, but the Elder Dragon made me do it!”
I’ll give you that the Consortium can be clever, sometimes. The refugees from the MA attacks to them are probably more of a “fortunate disaster”. They needed people to put on their island, and here they come.
My personal theory is that the Personal Nemesis is probably behind both of them, and both organizations got duped into being her(?) cat paws. She made the Molten Alliance to possibly gain their advanced hybrid ‘Molten’ technology , and as an addition; she weakened the Norn and Charr, if only a bit.
Southsun is a bit more tricky. She wants something from the island, but what is the point of bringing more people there, and that might be the karkas. This hurts for me to say, since they killed me numerous times, but I think they are the ‘good’ guys in this equation, if only because they are protecting their new home. They are protecting their new home very very well. So much so, the whole area is a dead zone to players, since they don’t want to deal with them.
By bringing in the refugees, the new possible settlers, it is forcing them to deal with the karka problem. They can’t live safely there as long as the karka are roaming around, so the easiest way to deal with the problem is to kill them. Once the karka population is culled, the Nemesis is free to do what she will with the island.
Though, I do wonder if it has anything to do with Southsun being volcanically active. “Molten” and all….
As I’m sure many other people have noticed, since Zhaitan’s death, the Risen have been getting more haggard and hunched over every couple of months. Without a master to control them, and no way to make more in large numbers, is there going to come a time in the living story where they cease to be?
Where they decay to a point where they just fall apart? And if so, what would take their place in areas like Orr?
