We need more information to make an accurate statement, but we really don’t have a choice if we do or not. It’s either: we kill them, or they will kill us.
We already have waypoints, and the areas are small enough where to be walk/run from one side to the other in a reasonable amount of time.
There really isn’t much need for them, other than people thinking they should be in this game because they are in others.
Oh, looks like we had two completely different versions of Guru and GW1 then, because I very much remember people complaining quite a bit about the story. But then again, rose-tinted glasses does tend to make things look better than they actually were.
Or maybe you’re lying? The idea that Abbadon’s complaints was close to Scarlet is laughable.
Personally, I didn’t care much for Abaddon’s storyline either. If they kept him to just being the dark forgotten god enacting Nightfall, I think I would have enjoyed him more, but they had to inject him into Prophecies and Factions on top of that.
I actually liked Khilbron and Shiro. When Abaddon came along, he ripped apart their motives and basically gave them Tyria’s version of “The Devil made me do it!” excuse. It kinda ruined them for me.
I have to admit that would make a lot of sense and be a very appropriate time to start off the next season, or at least some kind of pre-LS patch. Think about it, what better way to introduce a new dragon than at the very festival that celebrates us defeating another dragon.
It would also be very entertaining if said festival was party crashed by a champion of the newly awakened dragon.
Doubt it’s going to happen though…
Which MMO’s had an expansion that actually added to or polished the old world/vanilla? The MMO I spend most of my time on was WoW, and it only did that with Cata, and that took six years and a multi million/billion dollar budget to finally get too.
Even then, with the release of MoP, the newly revamped Azeroth got left behind just like everything else. Vanilla got left behind by BC, the Outland got left behind by WotLK, etc. etc. Those expansion areas are stuck in time content and design-wise, because they have served their purpose already, and their only function afterwards is to get players from lv.X to lv.Y, so they can move onto the newer content, and to possibly fill some time for achievement hunters to raise their score.
I always thought that was sad. Players are so addicted to expansions, because that’s the only thing that they really know when it comes to new content, and having to always explore new areas, that developers have to basically leave all the old content and areas to rot on the vine. It’s a huge waste of a large resource.
They could easily turn living story into expansions permanent content and the big one “NEW zones” are what expansions are,
Or, they can keep the LS and just add expansion level content too it overtime. Which has always been their plan on the matter. Instead of getting the whole “pie” at once, we just get it one slice at a time, content-wise.
People are always hung up on the matter of expansions, is because that’s the only thing we know when it comes to MMOs. That’s what all the companies have done, and they still do on the matter. “Expansions are the only way we get new major permanent content additions”. Anet is trying something new, and the players are spooked because they said “No planned expansions as of yet.”
When the game starts bleeding money, and the LS starts to fail the players (doomsayers on the forums ranting is in no way an accurate gauge of the players’ approval), and stops bringing in revenue, then they will consider making a true expansion. Until then, they seem to be happy to continue their route of expanding the game through the LS.

It would be a nice way to introduce the Chinese players into the LS, but like Donutdude said, we’ll have to wait and see.
If anything, the profits provided by the expansion into the Chinese market would probably go into expanding the development teams they already have. Which in turn would hopefully lead to more, and higher quality, content.
An expansion though? Probably not, for now anyway. They will probably try and increase the scale and quality of the LS first. More features, permanent content, new zones to explore to go along with the LS storyline, etc.

I think it would have to be Legendary food dishes that were self-replenishing, not Ascended.

Why would anyone recognise the Captain’s Council any more?
Because they have money, lots and lots of money, and that gives them the power to call the shots, especially during the rebuilding effort. The average everyday citizens might not like them, but they can’t get their houses back, much less LA as a whole, unless the Captain’s Council writes a check to pay for all the materials, it transportation, and all the labor it’s going to take to rebuild everything.
People are forgetting something important. The Zephyrites don’t need to bring resources to help rebuilt LA, because they can possible bring something better…. The Bazaar of the Four Winds.
They might not be able to bring the materials themselves to LA, but they can possibly bring the merchants that can bring them to there, if they are allowed to anchor above LA anyway. All they would need is the Captain’s Council’s permission, along with probably some lessening of restrictions and regulations for the time of the Bazaar. For those less savory merchants.
No, guardians don’t have any “holy” basis. Human guardians might, but that is probably more because they are human, not because they are guardians. Guardians draw their powers from the different virtues and ideals they believe in, and each race has different types of virtues and ideals than others.
Jeff Grubb: With the turmoil in Elona and the spread of the Order of Whispers into other lands, more Paragon teaching showed elsewhere in Tyria. These teachings melded with other traditions, and over time, the Guardians and their abilities can be found throughout the world and among all the races. They are not tied to a particular race, philosophy, or group of gods but rather to a larger concept of proactive defense, of taking the fight to a foe and protecting those you fight alongside while appealing equally to humanity’s defensive nature and the Charr’s desire to rule the battlefield.
Eric Flannum: To me, the Guardian feels a lot like playing a caster who wears heavy armor. This is in contrast to what you’d typically think of when you think of the Paladin archetype found in many games, which feels like a melee bruiser who also knows a few spells. The Guardian also doesn’t feel particularly religious, but he does feel spiritual. What I mean by that is that the Guardian embodies certain ideals without ascribing to any one faith in particular, which is also a bit different than your typical Paladin archetype.
The OP’s suggestion, on the other hand, is for the class to worship the “dark” gods (or being in Menzies) to gain their powers. Which wouldn’t work for the races that don’t believe in them, or the races that don’t respect them enough to believe that they deserve worship.
I personally enjoyed s1 on the LS.
It had its ups and downs, but what I paid for the game, all the free content has been worth it, whether it be temporary or permanent. Not to mention, the quality of the LS has been gradually improving. So hopefully with the additional revenue that will come with the expanding into the Chinese gaming market, Anet can expand their teams and release more and higher quality content.
More magic.
We had an entire season of techno gadgets. I think it’s past time for some more old fashion magic in this fantasy setting.
What’s the lore behind the anvils charging us for repairs? Coin operated? Or are anvils alive, but very sedentary, and have to feed their anvil children metal?
Those anvils are obviously ran by Rata Sum. They have the same capabilities as the waypoints, in that they can take exact change out of an adventurer’s pockets without them really noticing…
My brain hurts trying to imagine what might go into making the ascended mixed ingredients for dishes. It could go either really simply or “we enjoy making people cry” annoying.
Past tense of a bodily function.
I get it now, but I didn’t think that they screened for the past tense of words like that. Though, I didn’t know it was actually in the dictionary now. I’m getting a bit of a laugh reading the definitions of the present tense version of the word in Oxford’s at the moment.
I’m afraid that both Wizard’s and Witch’kitten were rewards in the living story content, not gem store items like ones you said. You will probably have to wait for next halloween to obtain the new kind of hat.
(edit: any idea why forum changes “Wit chs Hat” to the kitten?)
No, the Wizard’kitten was a free item you could get from the Gem Store during Wintersday 2012. It looked like Gandalf the Grey’kitten. Sadly, I bought one then proceeded to throw it away, because it looked kinda horrible on my asura. It would be nice for them to bring it back for the wardrobe though.
(Hmm. It seems that “Wizard’s_ hat” get edited too. It must have something to do with the " ’s_ hat" part.)

I’m sure it won’t happen, but the Chinese release would be a good time to revamp the Zhaitan fight a bit though.
After watching the video, all I can think about now is, “Zhaitan better be returning for an actually boss fight, if they are using him in their advertisements when he is suppose to be already ‘dead’ (lore-wise) when the game launches in China.”
China is starting their game at s2 of the LS, timeline-wise. The PS and Zhaitan’s death happened before s1 started.
I would have to agree with the Claw Island part. Not because of Trahearne though. It’s because it went from “Personal Story” to “Generic Story”.
It’s not personal if everyone has to do the same exact thing.
I wouldn’t hold your breathe on any sort of confirmation from Anet. It’s an ok theory, but it’s still just that… a theory. Until Anet decides what they what to do with the tengu and the Tower, all lore on the matter is subject to change to match what they want with the story.
As Konig said before, there isn’t much factual evidence either supporting or debunking the theory, because there isn’t really anything actually known on the matter. You have a bunch of possible circumstantial evidence, which is all well and good, but it’s hard to make an accurate theory from it without a lot more.
They need to find a good balance between the permanent and temporary content.
Always getting permanent content sounds good on paper, but how long does interest last for it though? The longest mmo I’ve played was WoW, and they have added in a lot of new areas and quests to the game over its life, but how populated are those areas really now? I know once I finished with a quest hub or area, and I’ve extracted all the rewards I can from it, I basically leave that area and never come back.
The times I did run through those areas again, usually leveling an alt if I found the time, at most I’ve found is maybe one or two other people. All the added permanent content, especially the faction quest hubs, are dead. The only interest they get now is from achievement seekers, since there isn’t much reason to visit old sub-level content.
Temporary content, on the other hand, is the opposite. It’s much more of a flash/bang approach. It generates a lot of interest in the players, but once it’s gone, it generates a bitter taste on the tongue. I can understand, from a storyline PoV, how temporary content fits into the game. Event’s only happen once, but that approach alienates the players a bit. Because if they missed the event, they missed the event, and there is no way to redo it again.
Getting the right balance is something hard to get. If they leave the stuff there too long, it just dies a slow painful death, and it kinda become wasteful to keep it around. If they take it away too fast, it upsets the players who weren’t able to do the content.
This wouldn’t work for the same reason Dervishes wouldn’t work. Lore-wise, they would only fit for humans.
Asura: While believing in higher beings, them being bigger cogs in the universe, they don’t worship them.
Sylvari: The race is agnostic, and they would need proof of their existence before really converting to any sort of worship.
Norn: Already have their Spirits of the Wild.
Charr: Wouldn’t be caught dead worshiping human gods.
I’m not really sure how the worshipping of fallen gods would help at all either. Abaddon is dead. Dhuum never really seemed to care much for mortals at all. As long as they died, went to the Underworld, and they stayed in the Underworld, he seemed to be content. Also, he might go out of his way to kill the res’ers and necromancers of the world, since he holds no love for them for messing with his system.
Menzies, to the best of my knowledge, isn’t considered a god as well. He is Bal’s evil half brother, but his cosmic status has never really be answered.
I’m not sure if it’s official canon or not, or just a random ring Anet made for the ascended stuff, but we do know that Khilbron did have a phylactery. That implies at least a bit of premeditation on his part. Unless of course, he pulled a Voldemort and accidently made the phylactery/horcrux without his knowledge.
Not that it did him any good in the end….
With the sheer number of slain RMT accounts, Anet should have brought back Dhuum for a short LS event…
“The agents of Dhuum have infiltrated Tyria, and they are slaughtering its citizens in mass! Drive them back to the Underworld where they belong, before they can do anymore damage!”
I could have sworn he summoned those Krait as minions to help in the battle. Him being a necromancer and all. So, as people said before, it’s probably bug. That, or, he can summon specialized necromancer minions.
For that to happen, Scarlet would have to wipe out all life and somehow gather up all the magic in the land, because magic is imbued in everything in Tyria. (Think of it like water. The oceans might contain the huge majority, but water is everywhere, and it’s in everything,) Then, she would have to be able to direct that huge concentration of magic in multiple directions… to possible moving targets.
Well…
You using outside sources, like the Event Timer websites, to influence your gameplay is part of the problem. While Anet gave them the tools to make them, those are strictly player ran websites, to help people keep track of the mega bosses and whatnot. They aren’t an actual part of the game. By following the Event Timer, I don’t think you are giving yourself enough time in an area to get a good feel for it, before moving onto the next area.
When I started, I made it a habit on my first character to try and do all the event chains and renown hearts in an area before moving to the next one. I’m sure I forgot a good majority of it, but it helped me get a good grasp of the entire story and conflicts in Tyria. Not to mention, it was all towards world completion anyway.
/sigh
The “I HATES TREHEARNE!!1!!1!1!” topic has been done to death. If you wish to discuss it, please either create a new thread or go necro an old one, because it is a bit off topic.
The Dredge… The Mr. Magoo race of Tyria.
@Erukk: It should be noted that the whole “perfection” thing with Kralkatorrik is player speculation – one I started it would seem but theorycrafting nonetheless. One can equally interpret the Edge of Destiny bits as greed amongst other things.
Could be either way, but I guess it depends on people’s definition of perfection, since it differs greatly from person to person.
To me, it always seem to read as Kralk trying to feel the void, to achieve a state of wholeness or completion. With how the Elder Dragons feed off magic, I guess it could be considered greed or hunger to some, but I don’t see how lonesome Snaff, no matter a great of mind he was, would be able to fill much of that void in the grand scheme of things if it came to hunger. Snaff was a speck of a speck compared to Kralk.
Or maybe the Elder Dragons’ hunger for magic is driven by their different motives. Zhaitan hungered magic for a version of immortality. Primordus, to destroy all things. Kralk, to fill the void in himself. Jormag, for strength to become the strongest(?).
Anyway, that train of thought went off tracks a bit…
RitualistNecromancer1) Summon the spirit of the recently killed.
2) Ask the spirit who killed him/her.
3) Profit.Problemo?
Fixed that for you.
Not much info on all of them to give an accurate answer, but I’m looking forward to Kralk the most. Followed by Jormag, Mordy, and Primordus. DSD is a non-contender, since we know nothing about it.
I’m really interested to see if Kralk’s obsession with perfection, and how it might effect or bleed over into the mind or actions of the Branded, especially his champions. To see if they might have their own versions of “perfection” to go along with Kralk’s.
Also…. I want to see a Branded djinn, because they would probably look kinda awesome. Especially if it’s wielding something like a Branded scythe, that is modeled after the Zenith weapons.
Whether they have any meaningful connections is still up in the air, since there hasn’t really be any info given on the matter.
I always just assumed, for my personal theory anyway, is that they hold a respect for one another, because they both share a deep connection to nature. Druids being one with it, and the Sylvari being a part of it. If a Sylvari would call out for help, a druid spirit would answer because of that respect.
Mt. Maelstrom changed the climate for the entire area.
I’m not so sure about Eir. I remember it being said during F&F that Braham’s father sent Eir away after he was born because she was too young to be tied down to a family yet. Braham’s only in his teens, so that would still leave Eir somewhat shy of old.
I not sure about him saying Eir was too young. I think it was something like “Wolf has great plans for her” or something.
Or they could setup a system by which they get hordes of adventurers to smuggle the corpse to them piece by piece in exchange for an assortment of knick-knacks.
Oh, that would be fun…
Zhaitan: The Jigsaw Puzzle! 500,000 Pieces and Counting!
Something to consider though is that silk is also relatively easy to get. 15 min on the QD champ train will get you a good dozen+ from salvaging. Even if it’s not your preferred play style, consider that an hour a night for a week will easily get you a stack of silk, plus mithril and all sorts of other sellable mats.
It’s not the obtainability that makes the crafting difficult. It’s the sheer amount needed. Crafters of all armor professions require 300 silk scraps per day to do the daily refinement. Compare this to the wood and leather refinement, which only requires 150, and the metal one, which requires a lowly 100, you get a huge disparity.
Not to mention, mithril and elder wood can be easily harvest in a short amount of time, and leather, being the red headed stepchild of gw2 crafting, is always in large stock on the tp. Silk, on the other hand, is always going to be in huge demand by all armor professions. Either it be crafting towards 400 or towards ascended.
Carol doesn’t see herself as a policing force of the whole zombie world though. The one to judge other people’s actions to either be good or evil, right or wrong. She does what she thinks needs to be done if it could/is effecting her group, and only her group.
Everyone else’s business is their own, and their own to deal with.
So, I’m guessing your Team Governor then?
He was the one blinded by pride, thinking he’s the one to save the world, and that the ends justify the means. To protect himself, and his people, he butchered innocents to take their supplies or even had the possibility of being a threat in the future to his power or his methods.
It turned out oh so well for him and anyone surrounding him didn’t?
Man, can you imagine the amount of effort it would take to haul Zhaitan’s body to a safe and secure location for analysis? They would either have to cut it up to manageable pieces or haul the whole thing in-between a dozen or so airships.
Bah! All I can picture now is Zhaitan’s body getting swarmed over by a horde of researchers in Hazmat Suit power suits, and they are being overseen by an Hannibal Chau-like, from Pacific Rim, OoW agent.
I hope they change this as well, because I cant even look at tailoring at the moment. I was thinking of making a set of ascended for my mesmer, but that thought quickly died after I looked up the recipes, since (minus the insignias) tailors need about 3x the amount of damask as everyone else.
I can understand them trying to make ascended armor lengthy and/or expensive to get, but one profession shouldn’t feel the brunt of that more than the others.
I would have to agree about the overkill on the meaningless deaths during the PS. It was always kinda disappointing when you know a character was going to die after hearing/reading a couple lines of his/her dialogue. After that, all I was able to think was, “Well… No point in getting attached to you. You’re about to die in a couple of missions.”
If a character’s storyline has evolved to a point and place where their death was understandable? Maybe, but only if it was written well. If not, I’d rather them fade into the background.
A character put into the story just to die? No thank you.
Konig, arrogant? I wouldn’t say that. If anything, I would say he’s very abrupt, especially on lore matters.
You have to remember the context here: The Order of Whisper never got the Aetherblades to talk. The Order of Whisper knows almost nothing about the Aetherblades, even now.
I mean yes of course I agree we should play nice in the beginning. But look at the results! We got no intelligence whatsoever by playing nice.
No, no, no…
For example, the Dark Knights have no problem hurting and torturing the “bad guys”, until they give up the home location of the bad guys. There will never be a trial. Everything is street justice.
If they refuse to say anything, we will locate his/her family and kidnap them. We will see how long these “bad guys” can hold up, while watching their family get tortured in front of them.
The OoW was never apart of the original statement. Therefore, they can’t be apart of the context of this whole thing. The Aetherblade was in your custody, not theirs.
Even then, you went straight to the most extreme option. You went directly from “playing nice” to “I hope you enjoy the screams of your wife and children”. You seem to think you can only get results from acts of evil, but that isn’t the case. And judging by the different reports and cover-ups on the matter, torture has been proven unreliable when it comes to obtaining information.
The people usually saying it gets results irl are either lying, have been misinformed on the matter, or they have been watching too many movies.
1) He wasn’t talking about just Aetherblades. He was talking about anyone and everyone your organization might view as “evil” or “a threat” in the future.
For an example, lets say a man is accused of being murder and having suspected ties to the bandits and White Mantle. Your people raid his house, find clothes closely matching WM grab, smudged documents showing the WM insignia, and a bloody dagger. He continually proclaims his innocence, but the evidence suggests otherwise. So your people kill him. You find out weeks later that man was innocent, and those items were planted there by a member of rival family.
2) You will kill them, but that doesn’t stop anything. Your organization will always draw in the wrong sort of people, but you’ll only be killing off the stupid ones. The smart ones know how to cover their tracks, and it will only get worse if one of them obtains a leadership position. S/he would have the ability to influence their subordinates actions and thoughts, and they will have a constant source of peons to throw under the bus should their own actions come under suspect.
3) That’s because they don’t try to kill them. They manage their threat level. Trying to wipe out the Separatists, is like trying to kill an idea. Which is beyond difficult. If the Charr tried to go full scale assault on them, it will only further the Separatist’s cause by drawing sympathy to their group. Which in turn will draw in more troops and probably funds.
And yes, you will become a direct threat to the different nations, if you become a threat to their populace. If you go onto their land, too kill their people, without any approval or recognition from them, you are a direct threat to them and their populace.
It is better to be “evil but alive” than “good but dead”. I cannot stress this point enough.
Yet, you see doing “evil” as the only option in this situation. Never once looking for a compromise or an alternate solution. Violence to such a degree should only be the final option.
You used the Aetherblade pirate and his family as an example? One spouse and two kids right? You instantly turned to torture as the means of extracting information, and you simply just brought in his family and tortured them as well after he didn’t talk. Pain might be a good motivator, but it isn’t the only motivator nor always the best. When you saw that he cared for his family, you chose the worst way to get him to talk.
Do you know why people become pirate? Some people might enjoy the lifestyle, but they are usually the minority. Most people turn to piracy, or just theft in general, because it’s a fast way to earn money. Illegal, but fast nevertheless. And why to people usually need a fast way to earn money? To support themselves and possibly their family, because they care for them.
What I would do to try and extract information? I would offer him something that he was probably trying to get anyway. A better life for his family. Him turning to piracy, especially the Aetherblades as they are a wanted group, would put his family in a tough spot. The spouse obviously knew about his activities. It would be just horrible if she would be arrested, and the children would be left without parents and had to fend for themselves.
So I would give him two options. Either he gives us the information, and if it proves to be accurate, his family won’t have to worry ever again. That my superiors will either move them to the city and give them well paying jobs to support themselves, or maybe a nice plot of land in the countryside to call just their own. Either way, they will be much better than they are now. And depending on the crimes the Aetherblade is guilty of, he might just have a chance to join them. If not, well… at least they are taken care of.
If he decides to prove more stubborn, this is when you bring in the family. Not to torture, but as motivation. He obviously cares for them, but without him, their life will be much more difficult. Financial support, moral support, physical support for the family… All gone. Not many jobs where he comes from, if he had to turn to piracy to support his family. No one to mind the kids, if mom has to going search constantly for a job. No one to protect the family if the neighborhood gang comes by looking for “payment”. Not to mention, you can always make good on that threat to arrest the wife, and his kids will be left to fend for themselves. Life on the streets for a child is a horrible way to live.
More often than not, people will make the right choice, especially given the right motivation. “You can catch more flies with honey than vinegar” after all.
But you had to choose torture of all things. Do you know how many enemies you have made because of that action? Where you have probably only had one (the Aetherblade), you have now made enemies of AT LEAST that family’s immediate circle. The family is now against you. When they tell their friends, they will be against you. Where ever they live, once they have heard you abduct whole families to torture for information, will be against you.
Extreme actions provoke extreme responses. Your organization might be an extreme response to another extreme action, but your organization’s actions will cause responses of their own. By making enemies of those who you come in contact with, you doom your organization to failure.
Oh yes, it’s so much easier to make sacrifices for “the greater good” when you’re the one holding the knife isn’kitten Yet if someone came after your family, because they viewed your actions as wrong/evil and they wanted to stop you, it would be a whole different matter now wouldn’t?
That’s all I need to know about the Dark Knights.
PS: The Order probably wouldn’t have been against experimenting on the Charr to craft a weapon against them. They were basically a race of savage animals to the Ascalonians, and they were skinned to make leather armor at times. The Order was against experimenting on humans.
“good moral or well meaning people”.
That’s the problem right there. You view the above people as good. I see them differently.
“These people value their personal moral, honour more than the protection of what they claimed to love.”
In other words, the protection from these people are conditional.
“I will only protect you if it doesn’t require me to break any laws.”
“I will gather intelligence only to the point that I don’t have to torture anyone.”
“I will only use spells and weapons that are legal and conventional.”
etc etc
You’ll have to explain this statement in further detail, because all I’m getting out of it is “The Dark Knights aren’t looking for people of good moral character, because they would only get in the way of what needs to be done.”
You do know that this type of thinking in an organization would be heavily abused by all the wrong sorts of characters right? The organization where there are: “absolutely no limits and laws”, "have no problem hurting and torturing the “bad guys”, and where the torture of innocents is ok because they’re related to the “bad guys” and it’s part of “the greater good”,
So in the end, you’re trying to set up an organization of morally questionable people willing to do what they think is right, arming them, training them, keeping your identities a secret, you get funding from a bunch of unknown upper classes that belief in your ideals, and you give the people you have judged as “bad guys” no trial and simply kill them…?
Congratulation! You’ve basically made an international terrorist organization! Or maybe better put in GW2 terms, you’re an international version of the Bandits/White Mantle.
