Philosophy Shift to Less Choice

My opinion on the matter has already been stated by others. That the achievement list is a bit constrictive. Maybe adding 1 or 2 more options to the list will help lessen that a bit.

Though, I will really miss one thing about the old system, and that would be its better chances of Black Lion Salvage Kits drops. Now that all the only chance of a trading posts item falls on a single day a week, the chances of actually getting one fell substantially. At least with the old system, no matter how small the odds, you had a chance of getting one each day.

Best Established MMO of 2014 - Guild Wars 2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Erukk.1408

Best MMO of 2014 is, hands down, Warlords of Draenor. Over 4 million players returning to the game made the choice and brought the award.

Guild Wars 2 is okay, but unless they baked the expansion for 2015, I can’t see it’s success.

Huge surge of players returning for an expansion isn’t all that surprising. It’s a given really for WoW. It’s if Blizzard is able to keep them all after they finish all the content within a couple months is the real hurdle. Because after all that, they only thing really keeping people playing and paying is dailies and rerunning raids.

I would probably think about going back myself for awhile, but them giving their players year long content droughts, this coming for a multi-billion dollar company, burned out any good will I have towards them. (Them adding a cash store didn’t help matters at all.)

We know these things in hindsight. At the moment Rurik was exiled, it wasn’t so obvious. The war still seemed quite winnable at that point, I think.

King Adelbern: “Rise, my son. you have done well. The discovery of Stormcaller is surely a sign of victory.”
Prince Rurik: “It is a powerful weapon, but I fear not powerful enough. The Charr have amassed an army of many thousands.
King Adelbern: “You overestimate these beasts, Rurik. Do not be afraid.”
Prince Rurik: “I am not afraid, father. I have seen them in battle. Rin has been destroyed! It would be wise to escape while we can. We should make for Kryta and rebuild our strength. Not wait here for death.”
King Adelbern: “I will never allow Ascalons to live in the shadow of the Krytans! It is Rin that will be rebuilt. And you will learn your place.”
Prince Rurik: “You have grown proud, Adelbern of Ascalon…proud and foolish!”
King Adelbern: “You would dare call your king a fool? I will hear no more. I banish you from Ascalon! You are no longer my prince, and you are no longer my son!”

Manageable for now? Sure. Winnable in the future? Slim to none.

After the Searing and its devastating losses, Charr harassment afterwards slowly picking off their numbers, most/all the farmland turning into a barren wasteland, Adelbern being too stubborn to ask Kryta for help, and numerous other factors, the arrival of a huge Charr army kinda put a countdown clock on the human rule of Ascalon. They survived for a long time because of the disarray and infighting within the Charr ranks, but Ascalon’s end was going to come sooner or later. It was just a matter of when.

Have some pride.

Which is the root of this whole problem at the end of the day. Adelbern had too much pride. So much so, it shackled him to Ascalon and ultimately doomed his people because his pride would allow for nothing else.

Can't we take Ascalon....Again?

in Lore

Erukk.1408

The Charr would still (most in likely) win.

You have to remember that Ascalon is only the homeland of the Iron Legion. Even if the Humans somehow squeak out a victory and take the Black Citadel, the remaining Blood Legion and Ash Legion armies can still swoop down and retake it from the still weakened Human forces.

Not to mention, the Human army would have to go about invading the hard way, because Captain’s Council wouldn’t allow the use of their Asura Gates for such a matter. (Not that it would matter, since BC’s gate is rigged with explosives.) They would most likely have to go through Ebonhawke, and that would mean crossing the Brand to get to BC. Which isn’t much of a smart idea. Other option is crossing the Shiverpeaks, but again they would have to go through many different threats (hostile wildlife, Dredge, Jotun, the weather itself, Icebrood, etc.) to do so.

I guess there is a third option…. Invasion via hot air balloon!

Maybe one day you can do this instead?

Ya, Lost Shores was a total nightmare. Latency was off the charts causing constant disconnects, and you couldn’t see the enemies half the time. Which was super fun when the karka would do their roll attacks.

And, at the end of the day, all that content just wasn’t worth it. A lot of people got a precursor from it, but the entire event was a huge one shot. You were busy that day? You missed it. Computer couldn’t handle all that strain? You miss it. Dynamic events are put on a loop for a reason, so people can take their time and do it whenever they want.

This is the last bit of dialogue from Adelbern you get from him in GW1, after you complete the quest to return to Ascalon and save it from a Titan/Charr attack.

“A long time have I fought for Ascalon. First as a soldier blessed by Balthazar, now as its king. Though I have survived one more battle, and I will see another day, it will not make me any more wise… only one day older. I have lost all that a man can lose. All that I have left is this antiquated set of armor and the remains of this tattered kingdom. I thank you for your help today. Rurik would have been very proud of all you have accomplished.”

Doesn’t really sound like later lore paints him.

You also have to remember that the Foefire took place somewhere around 17-18 years after that quest, and Adelbern was about 79 when he “died”. He spent 20 years ruling a ruined kingdom and trying to protect it from constant Charr attacks amongst other threats.

He might have been a good character in gw1, but it’s understandable that a combination of his age and the stress of rule might have made his mental state take a turn for the worse.

Did he turn his people into ghosts? Absolutely. Why did he do it? To keep them from dying savagely by the charr army that was about to wipe them all out anyways. At least this way they would keep on existing. Maybe even get some satisfaction from revenge or at least be their enemies thorn on their side.

From what I remember, he casted the Foefire to be a punishment to his own people and not so much the Charr. He saw his own soldiers start to try and flee the field when it became obvious that the Charr were going to win, and in a fit of rage, he struck his sword against the ground unleashing the Foefire.

Did not the humans of orr do the same thing? Did not their leader drown the nation to save the humans from also experiencing a brutal and savage genocide by an invading charr army? And possible torture? Sure they drowned but it still seems less cruel. Was not orr the city of magic, the place the gods used to live? the center or enlightenment, the brilliant thinkers, the leaders, etc. Sure zhaiten raised it up in time and they became his undead servants but at the time they didn’t know any better. It was a hard decision but seemed like a good one. If nothing else they would take down their killers and enemies with them. So why is one ok and the human king’s foefire that turned them all into ghosts so bad? They can’t rest in peace maybe? Might hurt or be eternally kitten ed? Still suffering? Who knows. I doubt he was a highly skilled elementalist or necromancer familiar with all the possible side effects of unknown magic. He had a hard choice to make and made it like any decisive wise ruler.

No, they did not.

Vizier Khilbron, advisor to the king and later to become the Undead Lich, caused the Cataclysm which sunk Orr all by himself. He didn’t do it do save people from a worse fate, especially since some were trapped in the Realm of Torment simply because they were around Khilbron himself, even though they had no part in his plan. He simply caused it since it was a part of Abaddon’s endgame.

Finally what about the great dwarf. In the battle against the great destroyer did he not also do a similar thing? Did we as heroes not help him do it? Did he not turn both his army and his entire race into stone soldiers to fight the destroyers eternally underground? How is that, that different from turning humans into ghosts to fight their enemies? Why is the dwarf considered a hero and the human king a villain? Because gw2 logic that says let’s all be friends says so? History is all perspective. If the king had the same intentions as the great dwarf couldn’t he also be a hero. Or at least a tragic hero? Why does he have to be remembered as a bad guy? Did not the dwarves when they turned to stone, also cease to exist as an individual. According to lore did they not become one person in mind, controlled by the king. Doesn’t that kind of mean they also died, at least the part that makes them who they are, their soul? Sure you could say they might have evolved, maybe, but who knows. Personally I would rather keep my individuality and not have to fight for eternity and be me, not a slave to a king’s every will. That seems way worse than being a ghost. At least they have memories and are themselves still. Following this logic maybe the great dwarf was a bad guy? He kind of did the same thing but worse in my opinion.

Just something to think about and consider. He also gave us fiery dragon swords and how cool is that

The first converts to the Great Dwarf were willing. They willfully gave themselves up because they saw it as their great purpose to fight the Great Destroyer and later Primordus I’d imagine. It’s the later conversions of the Stone Summit and the rest of the rest where the morality goes a bit pear shaped since they forced them all.

Though, unless Ogden is a special snowflake, it would seem that the dwarves do keep some/most of their original personality. When they’re together though, it might be the case of the collective hive mind might muffle or smother some of their individual thought.

LS is a horrible content delivery system for story that should be made into a properly and fully developed expansion.

Each style has its pros and con, because unless they add a huge amount of timegated content, the expansion method alone wouldn’t be much better storyline wise.

It would deliver a complete storyline, or at least the majority of it, which is a plus, but there would be nothing stopping us from finishing it quickly. We would finish the storyline in a couple of weeks to a month, then we would have to either wait another 3 or so months for a content patch, which we would finish in several days to a week, or suffer a content draught until the next expansion.

Anet seems to be slowly making their way over content patches, which they then split up into the LS episodes, but one way or the other, we the players are stuck with long periods of time with nothing to do.

Btw, the post above mine doesn’t have a leg to stand. Any company with a proper logistics would have started LS2 earlier, so it would have ended 2 weeks before Wintersday, this way everybody would have been happy: players had their luminescent, devs would have had time to iron bugs before going on vacation. But I guess that’s asking too much. It seems logistics is the weakest point in the whole Anet.

If Anet’s ran like most companies, the dev’s holiday “vacation” is probably only a couple days off around Christmas. I would be very surprised if it’s more than 2-3 extra days off. Even then, it’s not like the only thing they have to do is bugs fixes before going home. Each block of the LS takes about 3-4 months to build, so there is always work to be done.

Taking extensive breaks from the game because of time gaps between episodes is not exactly “well designed” – it just means people want to find out what happens next. An expansion with all of this content would’ve been much better.

The expansion model on story telling isn’t much different, just on a larger scale. You finish the entire expansion storyline somewhere between 2 weeks to a month or so. Then we get to sit on our thumbs for another 2 to 4 months wondering, “What’s going to happen next since this is done?”.

Ya. From what you can see (you have to step back and angle the camera when you’re talking to the centaur in the gut), Faolain raised her specter, but she didn’t actually attack anyone. After that, the centaurs rush in, and then the proto-NC rush in as well. It all goes downhill from there.

Likely. Yet an Elder Dragon doesn’t strike me as the sort to cower in a corner for seven years because its expectations were overturned. So, Slowpoke, coming out with superficial cuts, possibly some bruising (if anything had been broken or even sprained it seems unlikely he’d have been capable of launching himself back into the air), and an unpleasant surprise… I suspect Kralkatorrik is back in fighting form long since, if indeed he ever left it.

People seem to think he fled, but he accomplished his objective, and killed the ant that could mess around in his head in the bargain.

I’m hoping the writers have Kralk show a bit more intelligence and maybe a scheming nature when we finally get around to him. DE showed him that the ants are very much a threat to his person…er….(Elder) dragonhood. He might have killed the ant that took control of his mind, but what’s stopping the numerous other ants from trying to follow its lead?

Plus, if he’s keeping tabs on the state of the other Elder Dragons, the death of Zhaitan and Mordremoth (in a couple of LS seasons or new expansion (whatever they’re going with)) proves this point loud in clear. An Elder Dragon makes a nuisance of itself, and the ants are going to rise up and kill them. It might take a different strategy for it to survive.

Would that be such a problem really?

Unless the races kill each other off in some large scale world war or disaster, which is entirely possible either way without a constant ED threat, those societies would have thousands of years to advance and prepare themselves against the Elder Dragons at that point. Next time they would wake up, the Asura or Charr could probably simply snipe them from space with a satellite equipped with a high powered megalaser, and all they would have to do after that is replace it with a carefully selected being/dragon/Bloodstone/whatever.

The Elder Dragons

in Living World

Posted by: Erukk.1408

Erukk.1408

“Mechanism” is kinda the wrong word to describe the All. What we saw in Omadd’s machine was tinted by Scarlet’s view of things*, and since she was an engineer, her vision of how things might work and interact might be more mechanical in nature.

From Rallying Call

Pale Tree: I’m intrigued. Tell me more. What was it about? Where did you have this vision?
Player: In an asuran device Scarlet used to see the Eternal Alchemy. I saw it too.
Pale Tree: What dangers have you been toying with? Such things were not meant to be seen. They will crack your mind.
Player: I didn’t understand much of the vision, but you were at the center.
Pale Tree: If this was the device that Ceara used, then it must have maintained some of her touch upon it. But, I do not know what it could mean. Only you can know that.
Player: Maybe in time… What about Mordremoth? You know it’s been active?

From what Ogden says, the All is too large to be fully understood. It would almost be like trying to fully understand the complexities of the universe through only a single telescope. You can only see and understand so much.

From Hidden Arcana

Ogden Stonehealer: Ah yes. Only asura would attempt to quantify nature itself. But then, they are limited in perspective.
Ogden Stonehealer: By attempting to define the undefinable, they actually move further from the truth rather than closer to it.
Ogden Stonehealer: The Eternal Alchemy, nature, our world, the All—however you want to name it—is beyond understanding.
Ogden Stonehealer: We can only grasp portions of it. Even the Elder Dragons are small relative to the All.
Ogden Stonehealer: We see only certain layers of the Mists, the Elders, and Tyria. Anything beyond that is hidden from us.
Ogden Stonehealer: We must content ourselves with first understanding what’s before us.
Ogden Stonehealer: Right now, the Elder Dragons are the most critical to understand.

As for the deaths of the Elder Dragons leading to world ending cataclysm? That result is also implied in Nochtli’s dialogue in Dry Top. Just substitute water for magic and monster with Elder Dragon.

Nochtli

Very well. In old times, there was a tribe in a valley with only one source of water, a clear, sweet stream that ran by their village. One day that stream began to run dry and the tribe grew worried.
Go on.
They sent their greatest warrior upstream to find what had happened, and after three days she found a monster who had grown greedy and had drunk all the water for itself.
Go on.
The warrior explained the plight of her thirsty people and the greedy monster laughed a mighty croak and pushed her into the mud with its bloated belly. This angered the proud warrior very much.
Go on.
In her great anger, the warrior split the monster’s belly open, so that all the waters rushed forth in a flood that filled the valley, washing the warrior and her tribe away to the sea.
Wait, everyone died? What kind of story is that?
The point of this silly old tale is that a rash decision made out of pride is no better than a selfish decision made out of greed, and both will lead to ruin.

I kept trying to get all three achievements in one go the first two times, and I kept running into it with all the added backtracking for Marjory and Kas. I just decided to finish that run to get the other two achievements, and I came back to finish MoM on my third run through.

Ash Legion Spy Kit is your friend in there as well. It comes in handy when there isn’t any hiding places nearby.

As someone who was wanting to come back to this game, I’d like to put out there I’m extremely discusted with having to pay for content that was free. If this is how u guys roll I suggest stop the lame living story an go with expansions only.

So… Instead of simply logging in every two weeks or so to unlock new content, or paying or farming up a small fee to unlock it if you can’t spare 5-10mins to do so, you want to be forced to pay a large fee to unlock new content?

Hmm….

Why didn't the Norn try to kill Drakkar?

Not to mention, if they all grouped up together to dig it out of the ice, they would all just be exposing themselves to its mental influence.

Fair enough, but to turn the scrutiny around, how would the egg possibly be able to help the Pale Tree?

If he is taking it to a bloodstone it can simply be due to it being basically the only one that can be somewhat easily reached. The only other one we currently know the locations of would be the Ring of Fire one as far as I am aware, and that would probably be more or less impossible to access.

Unless they moved it in the last 250 years without telling us, there’s suppose to be a Bloodstone in Sparkfly Fen isn’t there?

Which would mean that a potential episode 9 would not come until middle/end of January at the earliest.

I wouldn’t mind that at all. It would mean I would finally get some undisturbed alone time to play DA:I.

Talk about obvious placeholder names being obvious. Though, I’m looking forward to traveling to the exotic lands of: Wetlands, Arid, Gwen, Yeh, and Kim. I hear they’re wonder this time of year.
