Why? Healing was incredible boring in WoW.

Boring for you. Healing in PvP is super fun and it’s pretty sad that it isn’t available in GW2, and especially ironic given there are “tank” specs for GW2 PvP.

Well until a mesmer hit you with Backfire and Migraine then healing was the opposite of fun. GW1 pains XD

There may well be horses in Tyria, but since they are flighty, evil creatures that are considered to be particularly delicious by most creatures with sharp and pointy teeth… they are probably quite rare, and also incredibly expensive.

This biased opinion brought to you by growing up in the countryside. I’d much prefer to lead a pack bull into battle anyday.

Fractals History (Lore)

in Lore

Posted by: Essarious Quw.8946

Essarious Quw.8946

The Urban Battlegrounds is probably Surmia or one of the un-named northern Ascalonian cities. The final boss is some sort of knight who summons a squire, which gives us a new little snippet of lore on how the Ascalonian military might have trained but that isn’t much else about him.

The Uncategorised fractal is either the future of Rata Sum or the fate of another city cube that was lost before the current one was built. Asuran magic can sometimes go horribly wrong and that’s definitely what happened here. As for when, I don’t know. Dessa’s sudden hesitance suggests that either this is an event that she feels guilty about, or that it’s an event that doesn’t seem to fit in with the overall theme of the fractals being in the past.

The Svanir one is probably in the Norn Homelands. It’s a nice little glimpse of what could have been left behind.

And the Jade Maw is one of the Leviathons of the Jade sea in Cantha. In Guild Wars 1 we saw these creatures suspended in beautiful and huge blocks of jade. This one is much bigger than any of the frozen ones we ever saw, but then again we never got to go to every single corner of the Jade Sea. There was a particular named Leviathon called Zu Hanuku, and although I do not think that this is him/her. It might well be the same species.

Famous last words.

Why can't Dervishes exist?

in Lore

Posted by: Essarious Quw.8946

Essarious Quw.8946

Well monks still exist within the game, they just aren’t a playable class and their skills are much weaker than they used to be. I am also pretty sure Miyani is a Paragon, so what’s to say that Dervishes don’t still exist within lore.

We just can’t play as them for mechanics reasons.

But we should have scythes as Melee weapons. That would be all kinds of awesome.

I think the launch version of Guild Wars 2 is more about the Sylvari than the other races, as they’ve been set pretty firmly opposite Zhaitan. I think each dragon we face will bring a different race to the forefront in terms of personal story. The Sylvari personal story from beginning to end is pretty much about Zhaitan tho for other races it takes a long while for him to become a part of the picture, and in some cases (humans -coughcough-) feels a little forced. So yeah, I think you’ve got a point.

How many here are playing less? And why?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Essarious Quw.8946

Essarious Quw.8946

1. I do and I don’t fully know why.

2. Just after Halloween ’cos I had a whole bunch more work to do IRL, but now that I have free time again I am not as enthused for some reason.

3. I honestly can’t put my finger on it. I know why I stopped playing WvW so much, I know why I abandoned going after a legendary, but I don’t know why instead of logging into GW2 I am doing other things like browsing the forums here.

I stopped playing WvW because I realised that the Invader Armour wasn’t a unique skin and it took away one of the motivations for playing my WvW pure, and also because I got sick and tired of the whining in map chat because of clipping issues.

I abandoned the quest for a Legendary because the gameplay to get the materials and the precursor and everything else I needed just wasn’t fun. Yeah I get that Legendary weapons should have Legendary requirements but I was expecting things more along the lines of “gather fire essence from the very heart of a volacano using a hazmat suit” or “bathe this catalyst in the heart blood of a mighty giant” or “take this reagent and shove it down a demon’s throat before stabbing them in the face”. Not… farm gold item drops obsessively for a month to buy a precursor then flip mats on the TP till you get everything you need to make something that immediately looses all it’s value when you equip it.

I’m not sure why I am not playing so much at the moment though. I like the new update, now that it’s been explained, Ascended Gear doesn’t make me feel like I absolutely need it, and although my friends play less I still have fun when I am online. -shrug-

Would you reccommend GW2 to a friend?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Essarious Quw.8946

Essarious Quw.8946

Yes I would recommend Guild Wars 2 to my friends. I’ve already convinced two of them to start playing and will be trying to convince some of my oldest gamer friends to start soon too.

At first I was wary of the new tier and asked my questions which have been answered by Anet. Ascended gear is directly related to the new condition mechanic. You don’t need it to play the regular game and to be honest my ingame friends who have already gone deep into fractals say that they un-equip their Ascended for WvW and regular PvE because it isn’t as good as their fully customised exotics. To be honest I can see their point.

Fractals is fun! It’s hugely profitable, and so what if you need to get a new ring at level 10 to deal with the new agony condition?

Less Population = Interesting Event Results

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Essarious Quw.8946

Essarious Quw.8946

I’ve seen some really interesting events that I’d never seen before not only in the Asura area but later in the game. These aren’t new ones added in the Halloween update, but are just regular chains that were perma-pushed one way or the other by the huge zerg that was passing through when I first mapped the game.

One that particularly sticks in my mind is during Halloween the farmers of Cursed Shore were all busy farming the Mad King instead, so the Shelter/Penetant run actually failed and we were pushed all the way back to Caer Shadowfin. Instead of just retaking the bits the farmers needed, we pushed all the way to Anchorage and that was the first time I had ever experienced that entire chain, and turned out to be insanely profitable.

I am not totally sure that I will ever see 100% of the events in this game… that said. I am still looking forward to more being added.

Mesmer Portal Fix

in WvW

Posted by: Essarious Quw.8946

Essarious Quw.8946

It’s an effective tactic that can be countered by plopping a hostile sanctuary dome (guardian) down over one side of the portal. The people who try to run in get blasted back, and the people that get through are flattened and are unable to get up (like when you overdo it on the guild ale keg).

There are probably better counters but I think that Mesmer portals and portal bombing are legitimate tactics that require brains, not brawn, to overcome.

Posted by: Essarious Quw.8946

The first time I played through GW2 and even the second I didn’t get to do the Behemoth event because it just wasn’t spawning (Gandara) but when I replayed the zone with some friends on our newbie Norns a few weeks ago we got to kill it twice in the time it took us to do map completion. I think it triggers every three hours provided that an additional set of triggers has also been met. I am not totally sure though, looking forward to the wiki one day holding the answers.

GW2 Endgame - Level 80 Now What?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Essarious Quw.8946

Essarious Quw.8946

Whelp I am level 80 and have a tonne of achievements and stuff left to do. This is just a list of things off the top of my head:

- Completing all the jumping puzzles.
- Completing all the explorer puzzles.
- Completing all the dungeons (explorable mode)
- Getting a legendary weapon (screw maxing that title!!!)
- Raising my WvW pure to level 80.
- Getting my warrior to level 80.
- Getting a full set of exotics and decent skins on all my characters.
- T3 sylvari skins for my elementalist.
- Getting some decent runes for my guardian.
- Maxing some sPvP titles.
- Getting to the current floor of Fractals (about level 23 is where my friends seem to be struggling)
- Filling my crafting storage and collectables tab
- Minipets
- Expanding my guild.

What I am actually doing: playing minecraft.

-shrug-

There is still tonnes of stuff to do but for the life of me I just can’t figure out why I don’t feel like doing it. It’s not that I don’t want to do all of those things because I honestly do but… I dunno. I’m not the only one who feels that way too, my friend’s list is looking more and more barren whenever I log on and although my guild is still active it’s just the same old familiar addicts it’s always been. The casual players we’ve picked up along the way are all doing other things.

I -honestly- cannot put a finger on why I feel this disconnect tho.

Well it’d be good if we could literally draw from their strength -coughcough-ritualist-coughcough- but I can kind of see your point. I think the response you got says more about your server than it does about the game. I have encountered a few jerks in my journey up the ranks in Fractals of the Mists, mostly those who refuse to play any level but the one they need, and those who haven’t yet adjusted to the latest patch and like to blame you for the fact their class doesn’t play the way they remember and now they’re on their kitten a whole bunch…

But yeah no “die in a fire” stuff.

I’m Loving:
- The invasion of Lion’s Arch was a really cool idea.
- The new models and the new area and all the fresh content that you’ve given us essentially for free.
- The chance at getting a prerequisite (I didn’t get one but the box and shell are awesome, ty)

- The Fractals dungeon (YES! A thousand times yes!)
- Meeting the members of the Captain’s Council.
- All the little lore tidbits (please put in readable books with pages we can turn and all)
- Fractal weapon skins.

I’m Liking:
- The fact that Karka’s are hard to kill
- The two new jumping puzzles
- The quest chain that lead us to beat up the Sylvari in Garrenhoff.
- The Consortium
- The difficulty of the one-time-event

I am not fond of:
- Another LA landmark gets destroyed (you are gonna run out of them at this rate).
- The sound bugs and glitches in the early parts of the event. CITIZENS CITIZENS etc.
- The inspection items that I feel like I can’t get rid of but the npcs didn’t seem to want to take off my hands.
- The length of the one-time-event (bit too much repetition! We didn’t need to beat back the re-enforcements more than once).
- Invisible Karkas.

DO NOT WANT:
- The new sylvari voice. Oh. MY GODs. I thought the Asura were irritating, it goes right through me like nails on a chalkboard.
- The crippling lag.
- The way that death is handled in the fractals. ( I get that it’s built using the same deal as the personal story but it needs to be more like actual dungeons)
- The crippling lag.
- The DCs in Fractals.
- The crippling lag.

A note on the lag: I occasionally get a DC from the servers when my router craps out (I need to replace it) but I never get lag as bad as I had with the first event in particular, I could also see the changes you made to the later events and I am very thankful for them but they unfortunately resulted in a nasty case of Invisible Karkas which as it turns out is a thousand times less fun than invisible zergs in WvW.

I’m loving:
- The concept of the Karka invading lions arch! Getting to fight things in the streets again, awesome.
- The questy-style scavenger hunt.
- Seeing the members of the Captains Council and having a nice chinwag with a few of them (I’ve been wondering where they were for ages now).
- The pre-event party in LA where Gandara’s community came together
- The pacing of the first day’s action.
- The Fractal weapon skins!!!

I’m really not fond of:
- The crippling lag.
- The NPC voice bites repeating constantly.
- Borked NPCs
- The fact that the consortium chests can’t be made in the mystic forge like the Halloween ones could.
- Various little bugs and niggles relating to the Karka and how you can’t see them sometimes.

There’s sort of a scavengery hunt type quest chain going on but its bugging out in wierd places.

The Karka also invaded Caledon (but they were invisible) and Kessex (but I didn’t have the stomach for the lag again so I don’t know how that went down) and I think that’s it.

in WvW

Posted by: Essarious Quw.8946

Its to make your enemies even less personal. You aren’t supposed to show off to the enemy you’re supposed to stab them in their face area.

Though…

It does get super confusing when your team is blue and you see someone whose dye is all red and you think “imma get dem” and it turns out it’s one of your team-mates. If your dye is all one colour of either Blue, Green or Red then you’re a very confusing team player in WvW.

Guild Wars 2 Story Research

in Personal Story

Posted by: Essarious Quw.8946

Essarious Quw.8946

1) 24, Male
2) In terms of MMOs, the story is what engages me. If the overall story of the game is bad or poorly implemented then most likely I won’t get past the mid-character range as grind alone is not enough to keep me playing. A good community could get me to play a bit longer than that but if the story isn’t making me get that nice little escapism buzz then I won’t stick around forever.
3) I love finding out more about the world itself. A well written character will go a long way but for some reason world setting always gets me far more interested. Big defining events are the best part of this.
4) I view my characters as separate entities but not because the story isn’t good enough. I tend to avoid projecting myself onto my characters too much and surround myself with players who feel the same way. If you get too invested in your characters in an MMO the slightest bit of criticism will lead to drama.
5) In the case of GW2 it feels as though I am walking someone else’s path but at the same time the options available give it just enough customisation to still feel like I can change things somehow. My story isn’t going to be everyone else’s story (at least till the end)
6) Well it’s definitely not to defeat Zhaitan and go home. The story definitely isn’t finished yet. My character’s goals are still to continue on into whatever needs doing next.
7) There are times when it feels disjointed and there are other times where it not only slots in perfectly but it gives you context to places in the world that you may have run past a thousand times without realising. My favourite one of these is a little Farmhouse near Garrenhoff in the Wizards’ Fief. I had no idea why this abandoned farmhouse with an attached crypt was there until I played through my human story and found out who once lived there and why. It may seem insignificant, but little touches like that get me more engaged with the world. On the other hand however, when something gets utterly destroyed in my personal story but does not appear as even a scorch mark in the persistent world I find myself wondering where the clean-up crew is and how they got here so fast.
8) I would be surprised to find someone had made the exact same choices I had but it wouldn’t make me feel weird unless they were also playing the exact same class in the exact same way wearing the exact same armour with the exact same dye and the exact same exotics… That would be weird.
9) In the beginning my personal story felt a little bit provincial. Things I was doing weren’t having much of an impact in the larger scheme and although I was enjoying it, I found myself wanting to get involved in the larger scheme of things. The pacing of this, leading me from one man instances to five man dungeons and raids was pretty good. I really liked the split at level 30 where you started doing dungeons alongside your personal story. The juxtaposition of the two was something a bit interesting that I hadn’t seen before. The move from solo to group was done well I think. It didn’t leave me feeling awkward at all.
