This is a tasteless statement and frankly, it makes me wonder about your idea of a good upbringing.

It really was tasteless, and not a good way to make my point, as comments like that just stir up emotions rather than encourage civil conversation. I’ve removed it since this is not the place for that discussion. As you say, I was a bit caught up in complaining about the complainers.

You seem to be mistaking “rewards and achievements” with randomly being assigned high value and low value items based on a Random Number Generator.

The rewards and achievements comment was directed toward people who are complaining about gameplay content, e.g. the JP, the dungeons.

I stated my thoughts on the RNG comments as well. People have made comments like “This is Gamble Wars 2 or RNG Wars 2!” There are some aspects of the game, not at all tied to gameplay, that are RNG dependent. Acquiring these event minis seems to be one of them. ANet has already told you that there is chance involved. You simply cannot say it is somehow unfair that some people take a chance and win, while others don’t. That’s what gambling is.

Working. As. Intended.

I understand that there is frustration when you take a chance and it doesn’t pay off, but you cannot say with a straight face that this event is a failure because of that. That’s what people are saying, and that’s what I find ridiculous.

I know that there are many of these posts, and we’re not supposed to make multiple threads on the same topic, but the whiners are doing it, so unless we do it as well, it looks like the majority of voices are negative.

I just want to say I’m impressed with the event.

And maybe a short rant.

I don’t understand most (ANY) of the posts that say the event is a failure. It’s the complete opposite. Most of the complaints are laughable, like “OMG EVERYTHING IN THIS GAME IS RNG NOW!” And of course, by ‘everything,’ they mean they haven’t been able to get all the minis or endless/unbreakable items they wanted from gifts or chests. Many of them make exactly this argument: “I tried really hard and I didn’t get what I wanted, ANet is unfair.”

They’re called rewards and achievements for a reason, guys.

Do I love every single aspect of the Wintersday content? No.
Do I have to audacity to think that it should all be catered to my playstyle preferences? No.

That is all.

Happy Wintersday to all you reasonable people out there.

progress bar froze? were you doing the divinitys reach tixx instance where you take back the princess town from the skritt? because it sounds like you and your group didn’t know what you were doing and kept letting the skritt run into the circle, which would prevent progress. until you hold the circle with no skritt in it at all, you’re not making progress. it happens with low dps groups, were there a couple of very low lvls scaled up in your group?

sorry you’re not enjoying the event, but it sounds like its just not to your tastes rather than a problem with execution at anet’ s end.

I came from Aion, where NCsoft seemed to be training the players to expect a continuous trend of more boring events, each outdoing the last. Even the items they would offer in the cash shop were like weapon skin versions of clip art, thrown together and garish. After a while, I learned to not get excited, even at this time of year when the event planners should be at the top of their game.

ANet has given me the complete opposite so far, despite a few forgivable technical hiccups. For the first time in a while, I’m really psyched to see what’s coming over the next couple of weeks (starting today! woot!).

It’s great to be in a frame of mind where you’re confident that you’re about to be spoiled again, instead of disappointed again. I’m just grateful to feel this sense of excitement about upcoming events. The race of the figurehead NPC is not even close to being on my radar.

This was a selling point for GW2 for a lot of people. ANet said they were getting rid of role-commitments way before the game was released. For me specifically, this has set GW2 in a whole different class of gameplay (not saying better or worse, just different) than other MMOs I have played. I happen to enjoy it this way. If I ever feel the need to sit back and heal a tank for a few hours, I know where to find those games.

I made a pretty similar post last night, in which I asked everyone why they were being so negative, and I simply suggested that the game is a work in progress and I don’t believe the devs’ goal is to trick you out of your money. This doesn’t answer your question, but I have to ask: Did they say why they went back to Aion? If it’s the vertical progression thing, that’s the silliest thing I’ve ever heard of, as Aion is a giant gear treadmill, and totally smothered in elitism and exclusion by many of the players at the top tier.
If this isn’t the reason, I’m just curious to know what the reason is, as I also came from Aion and couldn’t imagine going back now that I’ve been playing GW2 for a few months.

Facepunch.5710

I’m confused. Prior to the AMA, everyone was up in arms about the new gear tier and the way it’s been implemented. Chris has now said over and over that the dev team acknowledges that they made several missteps in many aspects of the patch, but they are learning from them and don’t intend to repeat them. Also, he’s said outright that the problems brought on in the patch will be made right.

It’s not just the FotM/Ascended gear issue. Many other points that I’ve seen brought up again and again here over the last few weeks have been touched on in the AMA. Quite a few times Chris has stated that the dev team is working on fixes. But now all I’m seeing here is “OMG it’s all PR nonsense and deflections!” My god people, is it possible to please you? Do you actually prefer to believe that the dev team is trying to trick you into playing the game as long as possible while they steer as far away from their own manifesto as possible?

Calm down. The sky is not falling. It may seem that way because of rendering bugs, but I’m sure they’re working on that too. You’re choosing to believe that Anet is desperately trying to cheat you out of your money when it’s just as likely that they are simply learning from their mistakes while trying to produce an incredible game.

Thanks for your hard work, dev team. Don’t let the rude kids get you down.

The Problems with Ele: Bit of a Rant, Really

in Elementalist

Posted by: Facepunch.5710

Facepunch.5710

Though I agree, my problem with these types of threads is this: ANet has already shown that when they make changes to the class, they are not the changes that are needed, and in some cases they reduce viable build options and enjoyment. Because of that, I feel like if they keep up with this kitten tinkering they’re doing now, it won’t be long until the class is unplayable or just not fun to play anymore. I’m scared of that patch, because the rest of the classes are so mind-numbingly dull to play that I’ll be walking away from the game if they take eles to that point.

It did change the world, the LA lighthouse was destroyed in phase I, and in phase III the karka cave was blasted open to make it accessible, while in phase II the entrance was blocked. Both changes remain, just as the lion statue in LA is still gone following the Mad King event.

But I agree, perhaps they could arrange the events so that the phases that change the world occur one time, and are followed by the temporary opening of an instanced zone for a few days, and completion of this zone results in the nice reward.

Facepunch.5710

In the wake of the event, I agree that there are legitimate complaints that should probably be addressed. They have been mentioned a thousand times overs and don’t need to be reiterated. There are also these people who say “I tried phase I and it was confusing and bugged so I ignored the rest of the event,” or “I did phase I & II but phase III was laggy and not fun so I just left.” Then they follow up with “Let me see if I’m understanding this: I GET NOTHING?!”

Uh…yes.

Here’s what happened to my wife and I during the event, and I think it’s likely that many, many other players who ended up looting the chest at the end of phase III also went through something similar:

We hated pretty much everything about the content in all three phases.
Uninteresting, laggy, zergfest.
The bugged parts made it difficult to know what we were expected to complete in order to move onto the next phase when it was introduced. But we asked questions in game and came on the forum and figured it out. We read the side tracker updates and mail alerts, and did what they said to do. We contributed to our overflows during the the unfun phase III monotony for 2.5 hours despite the overwhelming urge to pluck out each other’s eyeballs and die in a hole. We did all this because for 3 weeks prior to the event, ANet made it very clear that there would be nice rewards for those who participated, particularly in phase III. We didn’t know if they’d be worth it, but we didn’t want to take the chance of being left out, so we persevered. Neither of us got a precursor, but we were both happy to get a couple random exotics and a couple rares in addition to the 20 slot bag and accessory.

I came on the forums to see how everyone else’s experience had gone, and I think some people really got the short end of the stick, through no fault of their own (e.g. DC during phase III or being excluded because of time zone incompatibility with the extremely narrow window of the event). I hope ANet acknowledges you guys in someway, or at the very least prevents these kinds of problems in the future.

But you guys who literally gave up and then said “Oh, kitten! That’s not fair!” when you saw what those who stuck with it got for their misery, you seriously need to let go of the entitled attitude and learn to think objectively.

About the CoC and voicing our opinions

in Elementalist

Posted by: Facepunch.5710

Facepunch.5710

I realize that discussing moderation of the forums is against the code of conduct, but my thread was closed and I tried to send this via PM to the mod, but apparently that isn’t possible. This is a question for a mod, not an uprising and not a blatant attempt to violate the CoC. I hope you’ll indulge me.

A thread I began in an attempt to get the attention of a specific ANet staff members was closed. I got a PM that said it was closed because staff callouts and petition threads are against the code of conduct. The moderator was correct and the code of conduct states I shouldn’t be calling out staff, whether it’s done in a civil way or not. I also see there are no petition threads allowed. The thread was a violation on both counts so I’ve got no grounds to argue.

Here’s my question: Clearly there are many people upset with the recent changes to skills and traits of many classes. In my opinion, a healthy part of dealing with change is seeking understanding and sometimes a compromise. Granted, this is not my forum and my opinion doesn’t factor into the code of conduct, but is there no acceptable way that we as a community can collectively and calmly ask for some attention from the developers, whether it be rollbacks of changes or simply a bit of explanation for the thought process?

If you are a forum user reading this and you agree, I’m glad, but please don’t post a reply in a way that transforms this thread from a legitimate request for information into something else.

My problem with the "needs a fix" point of view

in Elementalist

Posted by: Facepunch.5710

Facepunch.5710

As quick note before I get into it: I’m posting my point of view here, I’m not saying you are wrong, or a bad player, or any of that. If you disagree, I’d love to hear a rational argument for your opinion.

I’ve seen many people say something to the effect of “Yes, I think if played correctly, elementalists can be great, but they still need to be fixed because of how hard it is to play them well compared to other classes.”

From my perspective, any given class should be considered for a fix based only on one question: What is their potential to compete with the other classes?

It seems to me that there are plenty of people showing how amazing this class can be. Therefore, any fix at all (which would presumably improve power or survivability or what have you by tweaking a few skills) has to consider the best elementalists as the baseline for class potential and then add to that. It seems to me that doing that would likely lead to justified complaints from the rest of the classes that elementalists are OP. What happens next is you get an influx of people rolling elementalists, most of which do it because of how easy they have become, and you get rapid decline in respect for elementalists who are really, really good, if that is something that matters to you. I tend think everyone wants to be proud of playing their class well, so this would hut the gameplay experience, in my opinion.

It may be easy to do well with a warrior or a thief, and there are certainly players of those classes that know more about their class and play better than others, but from what I’ve seen, elementalists who know what they’re doing certainly hold their own against these players.

So from my perspective, when I see requests to fix elementalists, all I really see are requests to remove the need to learn the class well in order to compete.

Thoughts?

Question for a New Ele

in Elementalist

Posted by: Facepunch.5710

Facepunch.5710

In regard to weapons, it is completely up to you. I went D/D pretty much from 1-80 just because I really enjoy the mobility that those skills offer, e.g. fire 3, air4, earth3. But in terms of PvE, if you happen to enjoy standing back and creating AoE fields with staff, there’s no reason why you’ll be at a disadvantage as long as you practice that play style.

In terms of traits, I think it’s worth pointing out that many of the builds you see floating around on this forum are best for endgame PvE, dungeons, and PvP, because they will often maximize survivability when fighting multiple opponents and they provide lots of stun break and condition removal options. However, at lower level PvE, you’ll find that mobs don’t use conditions or stun/daze as often as higher level mobs do, and in my experience that type of build was a waste of trait points while leveling. I went with a glass cannon build while solo leveling in PvE, mostly power and arcana. Hope that helps.

I think that, at first, the devs weren’t aware how the attunement system (alongside the low defense) made the elementalists so complex.

Sigh.

How can you possibly know this? I read your entire explanation and saw no justification of how you presume to know the devs’ intentions and/or understanding OF THEIR OWN GAME. You create an interesting scenario (that is totally speculative) but, my god man, rein in the arm waving.

With ‘preview’ currently unavailable in the Trading Post, and very few online resources that show a wide variety of armor sets, find a great-looking armor set can be difficult. The best website I have seen so far is here: http://dulfy.net/2012/08/09/gw2-pvp-armor-collection/#21 but the quality isn’t great, the names are wrong in some cases, and they are mostly on humans. I’m playing Sylvari at the moment and it can be tough to imagine what some of these look like on their body type.

So why don’t we do this ourselves? If you have a somewhat uncommon armor type, whichever race you are, try to get a decent picture and post it here! Include the name of the armor set as it was on the Trading Post or Merchant where you bought it, and of course the armor class/type.
