know what I think?
I want to fight with Scarlet.
Exactly, I said it. This story is guided in such a manner that simply gives me more reasons to help her than to stop her.
I mean, my main is a Human Necromancer who is a Street Rat origin. She just want to change the flawed system Tyria has become. There is no reason she would fight Scarlet (in fact, when Scarlet kidnapped Queen Jennah she thought “Outstanding!”)
My street rat would want to stop her because, frankly, she messed with Divinity’s Reach. You don’t do that and stay alive. Aetherblades bombing Lion’s Arch? That’s over there, and they don’t count. Dredge attacking norn and charr? Better them than us.
Screw with the human city? Knife in the ribs.
If playing a human Noble, it makes sense that I want to protect the beautiful city “my people” live in.
But, why would I care about this whole kitten city if throughout my life I’ve been living inside its worst sewers? Screw it all, some sylvari’s here to overthrow the royal hypocrites that had been talking down on us street people and it smells like the air of change. It’s time to do some real damage
my urge to kill rising
Not sure why “sexy” is a requirement. Nor, do I see why it should be the first requirement in a villain.
It makes us feel that this villain would have her/his influence and we’d better be on our toes.
The Illusive Man from Mass Effect is a “smexy” example for this.
Alright, I know I shouldn’t be expecting Mass Effect quality of writing in a MMO, but, but….is it really too much to ask for a top-class story in a top-class game?

Thank you for coming. This is a post made by a Rank 30 player, so there could be flaws and oversights as I am not an expert yet. But these, are my observations.
Your feedbacks are welcomed to progress the whole discussion!
With the recent balance patch to PvP, there are actually more viable classes now than before.
Let’s think about it, we’ve got 7 viable classes, more than 4~5 before:
Warrior
FINALLY viable now, with quite a few builds to your choice:
-Sword/Shield Condi
-Sword/Sword Condi
-Mace/Shield CC
-Hammer CC
-Axe/Axe Burst
-Greatsword Burst
-Signet+Banner Healing Bunker
Guardian
A must-have bunker for most team nowadays, Guardian remains a solid pick
-Mace/Shield Bunker
-Greatsword Burst
-Scepter/Shield Support
-Staff Support
-Hammer CC
-Sword/Focus Burst
Engineer
Remains more-than-viable
-Pistol/Shield Condi
-Rifel/Flamethrower Condi
-Grenade CC/Bunker
and much more~~I hardly play Engineer so sorry this are the few I could come up with
Ranger (discounting the notorious Spirit-EZ-mode~)
-Shortbow Condi
-Axe/Torch Condi
-Longbow “sniper” Burst (my personal favorite at the moment)
-Greatsword CC
-Sword/Dagger skirmishing
-Trap Bunker
Necromancer formerly not-viable/underpowered~~now Queen of the Patch
-Scepter/Dagger condi
-Staff Condi+Bunker~~~I admit this weapon is now a bit too versatile
-Dagger/Warhorn power burst (I’m using this currently)
-Deathshroud-based Bunker
-Fear-based CC
Thief (laugh) You’re kidding, right?
-Sword/Dagger Burst (okay, this one went overboard, but anyways glad to see a new playstyle)
-Dagger/Pistol
-Pistol/Dagger
-Dagger/Dagger Condi
-Dagger/Dagger Perma-Evade
-Pistol/Pistol Condi (still a little weak compared to others~but thanks to the condi buff, this build is now available, at last)
Mesmer
-Sword/Pistol Shatter Burst
-Greatsword Shater Burst
-Staff CC/Condi-removal
-Anything that’s about cloning
-Something about team condi-removal (building mesmer this way would make it unable to DPS or bunker~~but does quite well buffing the whole team)
To be frank, there has been some saying about Mesmers being underpowered atm, but in tPvP and hotjoins I see them running around in most matches
Elementalist
UNAVAILABLE
In order to bring Necromancer and Warrior up from their former misery, this class is the poor sacrifice. As a player we doesn’t really play Ele, I admit I do not understand. But I can definitely say Elementalist is un-viable. I just hardly see ANYONE play the class in PvP!
So there, despite the meta being disliked, we actually have 7 classes viable for PvP, with 2 former-dead-beats (necromancer and warrior) coming onto the stage, a previously UP Thief now being slightly OP, and the Elementalist being dragged down and being the Pre-patch Warrior 2.0
This has been asked for quite a few times, maybe, but can we please be allowed to do it?
I really want to take my cultural armors into sPvP mode of Guild Wars 2, because they are really beautiful
both the default Necromancer and Ranger are easy to grasp under the current meta
if you like it up close, definitely Guardian. It has been a solid pick since Beta
I
FEEL
COMPLETE
instead of 15K, I think everyone should have the current health pool of necromancer/warrior with Knight amulets on them. The game already has a too-fast pace, can’t really afford to make it even crazier
otherwise, good idea
p.s. Necromancers should also start with full Death Shroud bar because it’s their only choice of damage mitigation
a global increase on health pools could work
balance aside, the pace of combat is too high at the moment.
offensive skills are buffed while defensive ones are not, which leads to a even more uncontrolled damage race
Anything more than 1v1 is going so fast I hardly have any nanosecond to see what my opponent is doing and think. The only reaction I could have is the reflex I have based on hours of playing my character, not something I “come up with”
it’s solo queue. i can attest to the Screen shot.
ah wait, I’m getting it. The 150 points for won matches are from the Match Win Chest you open after you return to the Mists. Apologies for misunderstanding :P
sorry, bro, but we can easily tell this is a hotjoin, not SoloQ.
Your Win Bonus says 32, which is 20% of the glory for wins in hotjoin and not the 150 one gets from winning SoloQ
Lord Faren will become Batman!
He already has the tight outfit. Now he just needs a cape!
Newsflash: Capes confirmed! Coming soon! High priority living story project! Lord Faren apparel and more in the store!
I think Faren’s speedo would make a great microtransaction item.
Just kidding. (Or am I?)
You heard the man
time to put it into Gem Store as a PvP skin!
Gasoline, shouldn’t you be in the PvP section of the forums?
also, nice warhorn you’ve got there. Too bad I have the Greatsword
sigh
ANet, to my understanding you guys seem to have some rivalry with Helseth. But please, listen to this man. He understands how Guild Wars 2 could become the MMO e-sports you planned it to be
in fact, the players that are reading, that are posting here, all have the potential to help you. I just hope you guys would help us
1. Rewards
-I hope we get to carry PvE armors into PvP and convert them into PvP skins.
-As mentioned by many folks here, this encourages more PvEers to join PvP because even as Rank 1 they get to prove that they are not so new at GW2 by showing that Legendary thing they HAD outside the Mists.
2. Balance
-I support balancing PvP and PvE separately
-Remove A.I. pets and let us assume control of spirits and necro minion
-Health pools should be increased vastly across the board.
-This should be done at a much more frequent pace than current. PvP is a environment that evolves VERY fast because it’s a game that consists of 100% human
3. More Conquest Maps
-I support sticking to this 1 game type
-Unique BG musics for every map, like Spirit Watch and Skyhammer
(edited by Ferik.3127)
This. Solves Everything.
Except the staff eles are still pathetically UP
This map requires you to pay more attention to your enemy’s position than any other map. To time your dodges, pushes, pulls, and stabilities.
Yeah, a thief scorpion wires you in stealth. Position out of that.
How hard is it to disable this map in the arena rotation? They did it for Legacy of the Foefire (albeit it took over 50 hours before they responded).
It is never that simple.
Legacy of the Foefire is a map that which has existed in the rotation for a long time. They took it down for maintenance. Now it’s right back up, good as new. As we expect it to do so.
Skyhammer is a map with too many experimental and innovative designs. To take it down is to send a wrong message to the community that “yeah we agree this map sucks and it should be out of tPvP”~which isn’t what ArenaNet thinks.
Oddly, I have to agree here. Skyhammer is a map that deserve more community love
Do what you must.
League of Legends has this option to observe Ranked games at all times.
StarCraft II does not, but that was because it is limited to the room capacity design
My idea is that add an announcer in HotM that which players can talk to and observe ongoing tPvP matches
Nonetheless, this would be a fine addition to promote Guild Wars 2 viewership.
+1
the Phoenix finisher is underwhelming compared to Shark. I do not feel the “thrilled” feel the later successfully displayed
but it may be just me
I am so very ecstatic to see Staff Elementalist within!
REVENGE
this has been amusingly arousing XD
so basically, Sylvari’s butt (both female and male) has an unpleasant ratio to the upper torso. Really, the only viable “Physique” choice at the moment are the 2 on the left (default and the one below it). In all other combinations~~~the butt is just too….shaky
Thus Red Team got a 150 score
it’s because guardians are much harder to down. Their bunker nature and condi cleanse make them very tough target for Ranger. If the Ranger could get Guardian down, s/he deserves the win.
just my 2 opinion
I’m thinking of large rose bud “traps” that get activated when two players stand on it; the flower swallows the two players into a small arena and forces them to duel. Flower opens up after a player is downed.
Zone! THE ZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzONE!
You honor me by replying on this topic. Always liked your dual-sword warrior build on Server 002.
Also, very brilliant idea. I think this would encourage players to build specifically for the map, much like people did on Skyhammer.
Is this idea from some dark fantasy genre? Cos it’s really cool, gives me the chills and warms the heart.
Cap points separated by fissures and you carry a seed to a spot that grows a bridge to cross over
Good one, Katana. A Sylvari lore mechanism is applied naturally.
The seeds could work like the Trebuchet repair kits on Kyhlo
great idea, guys, keep it coming! ArenaNet would surely appreciate cool new ideas about building a new map for everyone!
(edited by Ferik.3127)
The current maps are:
*Battle of Kyhlo – 100% Human
*Legacy of Foefire – Human vs. Charr
*Forest of Niflhel – Norn and Human
*Temple of the Silent Storm – Kodan, which are Norns. Thanks go to runeblade for telling me!
*Raid on the Capricorn – Lion’s Arch/Pirate City style. Which also means Humans
*Spirit Watch – 100% Norn (like this map. Why isn’t it in Team Arena?)
*Skyhammer – 100% Asura (I love this map. Haters gonna hate!)
And we see, all other 4 races except Sylvari have got at least 1 PvP map theme (humans have too much love~). Maybe it’s time for some fights inside a super-natural forest?
If you have any ideas about what this map should be like and how it works post it right here. If some devs drop by and we get enough attention that Sylvari map could really happen!

I remember the days when people scream D/D Ele being OP.
Now that necro and thieves are buffed to this extent…I wish Ele wasn’t nerfed.
As a necro main, I am confident while my skills have not progressed that much, my scores and kills against eles have absolutely increased.
I would actually support bringing elementalist to its old OP D/D state, just to see if this can bring the class back to competitive PvP. Currently, there’s just too many thieves spamming around
Coming from a somewhat veteran of GW1, I can tell you that “ranking” up there was comparably slow. You got a nice emote for doing so, but aside from that you got nothing but a title and some bragging rights, which is pretty much the same as in this game. I did well enough that I didn’t need to rank up in order to play with high-ranked/good players, since my playing level was on par to compete for the most part. I guess that’s why I don’t really care that much about the rank system in this game except for the greater ability to customize my character’s appearance.
That said, if your biggest gripe is the ranking system, and not the current meta/balance in general, I think you should look deeper into the various toxic elements this game’s design has brought upon itself, some of which are because of relics from GW1’s past.
I have issues with the balance and meta, of course, but those are getting worked on after being talked about. PvP Progression is what I made the thread about, and it’s what I would like it to stay about.
Well you should then that PvP rewards are being worked on. In fact is one of their top priorities
That’s what I mentioned in the OP. They are aware of it, and they say it constantly on their livestreams, but nothing has changed. WvW XP and rewards have been overhauled twice now. The game is supposed to focused on SPvP as an “esport” game, but it seems to focus anywhere but SPvP mostly.
Newsflash: They are aware of pretty much everything PvP needs, but they dont have the manpower, resources to pull it off in any reasonable timeframe we would like. GW2 PvP features is like playing a permanent waiting game.
This new patch announced at August 20th: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/releases/august-20-2013/
Please tell me if you can find anything about PvP in that announcement. That just goes to show their priorities.
Judging by this:
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/a-look-at-upcoming-pvp-changes/
I can’t say PvP is not among their priority, but the devs are really avoiding things that are hard to fix.
they are good with keep doing new stuffs in PvP. We’ve got Skyhammer. IDC how “pro-players” claims the map is bad, I ABSOLUTELY love Skyhammer as a competitive map.
BUT aside from the insanely imbalanced meta, lack of PvP progression has been voiced for over an year since Beta. And EVERYTHING is said, but NOTHING is done about it
current reward/time-investment structure is worse than Lineage’s Korean type of grindfest……hell even Diablo 2 feels more rewarding!
I am Rank 30 atm and the progression feels stale already. Remember that this huge rank gap, unlike the smooth curve of PvE Level, MULTIPLIES for every 10 ranks…
Imagine what players that are 40, 50 or even 70 are thinking….I’m utterly surprised they are not quitting this game

been looking forward to this!
i especially dislike how I just can’t deposit the Red dye I unlocked on my guardian and let my warrior withdraw it in HotM. To do this, i would have to go in and out of major cities for a total 4 times. Takes away the PvP feel, I’d say
appreciate the effort, very detailed guide for especially new-comers to PvP
having earned most of the tPvP skins by now and as a Wolf Rank myself, though, I would argue that there is reason to play hotjoin over tPvP as the former gives a more steady rate of rank points income. Much steadier than Solo Arena
Why?
If you are skilled enough, it is possible to get 200+ rank points in most matches whereas in tPvP you can earn 450 (300 max+150 for winning) if you are masterful BUT if the enemy is too strong, you might end up not even getting 100
my 2 cents.
edit: Just my opinion. When you are Rabbit & Deer (Rank 1-19)~~~DO NOT spend too much glory as Gem-Store skins beat most skins in those Ranks. The real PvP skins starts at Dolyak—-Rank 20, so save your Glory for~BIGGER FISH
(edited by Ferik.3127)
I don’t care about progression and leveling in pvp, I play pvp because it’s fun.
Your leveling curve for “other MMOs” is also completely wrong. You made it an exponential function, which means that the rate is increasing, which is not common experience. Instead you should use a logarithmic function – ln(x). In my experience the rate decreases over time in all MMOs. Just as it does in GW2.
the y-axis is “Time to Level Up” not “Rate of leveling up”
L2R?
Also, in PvE, the level points are identical post level 30 (or 20, I can’t remember~).
Hence the curve
you dont like 15k for rank at wolf ooo men you will wish you dint say this wen you get tiger or brear
![]()
anyway think about it there isnt much to do in pvp so you have to lv realy swoly in other not to quit.Imagin if we all get rank 80 for 2-3 mounts like in pve ppl will mass stop plaing pvp
Well yeah, but these facts:
1. No one has reached Rank80 whereas there are tons of Level80 in PvE
2. People are grinding more and playing “real PvP” less
is what we get as a result of the design to “stop people from mass-stop-playing”
I think in PvE, this will be an issue because PvE relies on new contents to keep players in the game. hence we have Living Story to keep PvEers in the game even after R80.
in PvP this would not be an issue, because players are fighting other players. The wide possibility of gameplay keeps people in the game. Even if everyone reaches R80
(edited by Ferik.3127)
Guild Wars 2 PvP (counting Beta) has been out for almost a year. So I think it’s high time~
How do you feel about the curve of our ranking up on PvP? Fast? Slow? Does it feel rewarding? Any other thoughts you would like to share?
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————
For myself:
My rank is currently 30 so I guess I am sort of a casual player, considering many of you readers here are higher. However, I think the “sense of progression” starts to go away post Rank 20.
Take tournaments-PvP. When I win matches, I get the reward chests and the rank points that comes feel sufficient. As the rank points for 10~20 was mostly 4000 per rank. Estimately 10 tPvP winds can get me 1 rank, which is fair and encourages me to take risks to play tPvP over hotjoins.
But when the rank points double (4,000—>7,500)from Rank 19 on, the rank points I get from wins feels okay. I started to realize why many people chose hotjoins over tPvO because the former is simply more steady.
When I see the rank gap double yet again on Rank 29 (7,500—> 15,000), I gave up on getting rank points from tPvP. For 15,000, you need to estimately win 30 matches. Considering how hard that is, i went right back to 8v8 hotjoins, because my risk/reward ratio in tPvP cannot fulfill the gap fast enough.
I also have a confusion here: why the escalating rank points in PvP while in PvE, level points are roughly the same throughout the game progress???
One of the biggest advantages of this game’s PvE side is that the leveling curve feels consistent. What I am feeling for PvP right now, is that this game mode feels like old MMO leveling curves. For no good reasons~
What do you think?
I have played some Solo Arena matches and after losing to some guys who strangely were on the same team for many games in a row……i came to this forum and saw some posts talking about sync-queing…
IS IT REALLY HAPPENING!?
Because honestly, ALL YOU NEED TO DO TO STOP SYNC-Q is put some code into the queue to put the 2 chromatically closest players in the queue on opposite teams
IT IS THAT EASY. WHY DIDNT YOU PATCH THIS?!
EVEN 10 years ago, when I was playing 2v2 even 4v4 in Warcraft 3…..or even in the very basic World of Warcraft battleground (casual, not ranked) THIS DID NOT HAPPEN. Hell it could not happen in any game that is serious about PVP at all…..
…I will still play PvP but i honestly think this sync-Q is sickeningly ridiculous……the fact it could even happen is…………disgusting…..
they just decided to nerf Loadtime of the Foefire so people would play Cryhammer more and think it is more playable
Completely agree.
And why not have cast bars? It is proven that the best players can watch cast bars and the field at the same time. See GW1 as an example.
I think before we get a new reward system, which is not based on mindless glory-grinding like the current meta~
~we’ll just have to accept these new PvP skins being PvE-oriented or being purchased from Trading Posts
cos honestly, the Rank 80 grind is inhuman…too many people are complaining on that…it is simply unwise to continue down that pit
You’re right I DO want to target the 4+ minions/spirits before the player that summoned them. I want to target that Flesh Golem, not the charr i selected WITH my very mouse-click. I want to target the turrets that are absolutely far away over the engineer right NEXT to me. Hell let’s even target the sharks before actual players and call it

Just grand design, these are. I can finally legitimately wear a Norn cultural in PvP
Keep more of them coming, ANet!
my friend never played GW2 before and when she watched the tournament she asked: “..so Guild Wars is basically wars between midget guilds?”
…………
ArenaNet has already decided the victor. Players aren’t actually voting for anything. It’s all a sham by ArenaNet to make players feel like they have an impact on the world and to get them to log as many game hours as possible. I can’t believe so many of you are falling for it.
So, who have ArenaNet decided will win then?
At this point, I would say Evon’s chance is big. ArenaNet gave the Abbadon fractual to him and now still seem to have a strong favorism over him.
They actually have created and supported threads promoting Evon!
As a WoW player, I am sensing a Horde Favorism 2.0
and it tastes…wrong. In a game that player choices matter (to an extent)
This very much reminds me of Mass Effect’s council member choice.
Do you choose Anderson, who has been your best friend and most loyal comrade, to be the councilor? Or do you choose Udina, a ruthless politician who would do anything to ensure his position?
It turned out that most players chose Anderson cos they trust him more. BUT later on in Mass Effect Udina still took over as Anderson must return to his frontline duties. Then we all find out Udina is the real bad guy and we must defeat him
The way ANet is currently writing Ellen Kiel and Evon is very similar to this. I would say, if the players “follow their heart”, not follow their brain, Ellen would win. But even then, her position as a LA leader would not be permanent because the evil Evon would eventually come back by doing something nasty.
(what can I say? He is an Ash Legion, after all~)
And now WITH ALL THAT SAID~
Screw the brain, screw the BLC discount and all the ruthless calculus about an Abbadon replicate.
This is not about calculations.
This is not about RNG boxes.
Hell, this is not about how much benefit you, as a voter, can get from the election.
This is about having a leader who knows the bitterness of war and brave leadership.
This is about a better tomorrow. And how much you can contribute to it by casting your vote.
I am following my heart.

I…I…never thought about where they come from :o
See? It is that many <3
These are no illusions. The undead minions raised by necromancy are real. The curses laid by necromancy are real.
The locusts are one of those real things
And where they come from is also very
Necromancers are all full of hot air, and locusts love hot air.
what’s that piece of masterwork called~ah, yes, Nightmare armor?
How about a pvp-rank-point-grinding living nightmare that gives you hell from month to month, year to year before you can even purchase it?
TLDR; Conditions require no strategical use and has no counterplay, for the game to be competitive this has to change.
imagine the upheaval from pve players if their condi builds did no damage
it’s impossible that condi do no damage.
Conditions’ problem is not the damage being too high, but the damage being technically unavoidable in PvP, even by competitive players, whereas power-based bursts can be mostly defended against
“The locusts have always been here. Sleeping, deep beneath the earth, beneth the sea. Witing for the time to rise”. That time comes when the necromancer blows his horn.
On a side note. I wonder where the birds for the ranger’s Hunter’s Call comes from as well. At least in places outside the open world such as at jade maw.
Interesting theory.
Yet, if they slept underground, they would rise from the ground below me when I blow my horn. Instead, the locusts fly DIRECTLY out of my warhorn.
For Ranger’s Hunter’s Call summoning flocks of birds, if you look close enough those birds came from the sky. Makes much sense the Ranger simply had a bond with them and summoned the creatures at the right time.
SOOOOOO
for all we know Necromancer’s warhorn skill is basically about blowing a swarm of locusts out into the air using that horn.
Now, the amount of locusts generated by Warhorn #5 is huge. There is not enough space for so many locusts to live in the warhorn, so it would need to be
SOMEWHERE ELSE
from inside the mouth of the necromancer. Or some place deeper.
As deep as one’s imagination can go.
There, our necromancers have locusts that live inside their bodies.
Yuck.
On a 2nd thought, this is freaking genius.
Om nom nom.
