So did the NPE work?

I had a brother try it. He played my account right around launch until level ~10 as an Elementalist. Wanted to get someone I know playing the game. Put simply he didn’t purchase the game, even with the 50% off sale.
I haven’t had a chance to ask a bunch of questions on what didn’t work, but he didn’t even get as far as he did at launch.

I personally liked the analogy. It makes it easier for people to understand the issues with the personal story since the NPE patch. And, what’s more relatable than Harry Potter?

Episode 2 Bilbo gives Frodo The One Ring.

: )

Whoa! Spoilers…

I was far enough into the book to know he threw the ring into the volcano, but I had no idea he received the ring.

Hi All,

Just wanted to let you know that we will be discussing raiding in the next phase of the Guild CDI. Feel free to carry on discussing here, and just wanted to let you know that i am reading this thread.

The addition of raids will be awesome for GW2. Happy you guys are doing this.

Mmos are extremely complex. I feel the same way. To this day I still think WoW has gotten the balance closest to being right. Its not as great as it once was, but it still can’t be beat in what it does. I also think eve online is right next to WoW.
No trinity is what I would think hurts the game. It makes its awesome combat a complete zerg fest and doesn’t allow interesting boss mechanics, which is why we see the dungeons being bad compared to other mmos that do have the trinity.

I just really hope that an expansion has been in the works for awhile now. Hopefully something in the first half of 2015.
I think I may be in the minority because I would rather see Elona before we see Cantha.
We can only hope that Colin isn’t in charge of what is in an expansion. We know that won’t amount to much.

They would be able to reward unique skins that are only obtainable through raids. That alone would be enough for a lot of people to run through these raids. That is also assuming people wouldn’t just run through them with friends for the fun of it.

Then it sounds like collecting titles may be your thing.

I actually don’t like titles at all. I have the gw1 titles and some gw2 titles and I don’t display one at all. I wouldn’t mind mini pets though.

This is really promising. Hopefully this is what the AI guy was working on.
Could be a big reason for the megaserver as well. Taking a bunch of people out of the world and putting them in an instance won’t be such a big problem now.

Technically Gw1 is an mmo. It doesn’t matter what Arenanet labeled it as. They could label it as a fps, but that doesn’t make it so.
It might not feel like it to some , but it fits every definition of an mmorpg.

Years ago it was more difficult to label a game as an mmo. These days it doesn’t take much at all. Take a look at all these browser/mobile mmos.

They have to make money somehow without a subscription and at this point in it’s life it’s probably not making much at all from box sales. I’m sure they have NCsoft/nexon pushing sales as well.

I don’t the think the personal story was as well received as Anet wanted it to be. We all know what people thought of Trahearne and the Zhaitan fight. We’ve all seen people talk it down. While it did have people who liked it, many many people disliked it. The open world has always been the strength of this game.

I think Anet really wanted to shift the focus to the world and away from the story.

The same thing could be said for dynamic events. Arenanet said people just weren’t doing new events, which is why they weren’t putting a lot of effort into them. Hearts have always seem to be hated by the majority because they mimic your typical mmo quest.
What does that leave for the open world? Vistas, PoI, skill points, and parts of the living story? I guess that would explain why they are putting all their eggs in the living story basket.
I actually don’t know what I find to be the strongest aspect of the game. I mostly just run around killing stuff. I guess that would mean the open world is what’s keeping me going.

I actually think I liked the season 1 stuff more than the current season. It’s biggest problem was grindy achievements and of course it being temporary.
Marionette fight was much better than anything we’ve seen this season imo.

First off, can people stop picking on Vayne for misspelling “Zaishan”? The first correction was enough, it didn’t need to be done by every person.

In no particular order:
(my opinion)

  • Non-rectangle zones

Well, even in GW1, the zones were rectangles, but they were better disguised rectangles. A jagged edge in here, a rounded corner there. Take a close look at the borders of the zones, and you’ll know they’re pretty close to rectangles in nearly every case.

  • Assassins
  • Mesmers

Assassins were a very acquired skill back then, as I recall. Needing to have a lead-offhand-dual strike combo was far more annoying than even the warrior’s weapon/adrenaline requirements (which were a smaller pain, but still an issue). I’d rather have the thief. As for mesmers, they morphed into something else entirely. I kind of liked their old, mostly interrupt style, but I can live with illusions aplenty.

As for the menagerie, it isn’t so much that it’d only cater to rangers, but rangers now essentially have their menagerie wandering around in their back pocket. You dumped them in the menagerie because you could only have one at a time, and didn’t necessarily want to have to retrain it from level 5 back up to level 20. It was kind of cool how they grew with experience, though.

The main thing I miss about GW1 was all those hidden outposts out there. There were so many hidden outposts, and initially they were the only way to buy some of the prophesy skills. I know there’s still hidden still in GW2, but it’s not quite the same thing.

It’s “zaishen”… I had to. Lol

I would normally be saying to myself that gw2 is not the game for me, but over the last few days I might be changing my mind. I’m enjoying the game so much right now. I don’t think I’ve enjoyed the game this much at any point since launch. Maybe it’s because I’m playing the game for what it is and not what I want it to be. I kept telling myself that there are all these things from other games like WoW that I needed to enjoy the game. Did I miraculously change my entire view on the game in the last week? I don’t know, but it’s starting to feel like it.

It’s incorrect to say there have been no new dungeons since launch. And when you argue from a hyperbole, people are going to focus on that and tear it apart. So let’s stick to facts.

About 2 months after gw2’s launch, fractals of the mists were added. Whether or not you want to call it a dungeon, it fills the roll of challenging instanced 5 man content with unique skin rewards. This was an excellent addition, and made me incredibly excited about the direction endgame pve was headed.

Then the living story began. Over the course of 2013, 3 new dungeon paths were added. 2 were temporary, but they were cannibalized into fractal shards. Most of the dungeon content added during that year still exists.

Towards the end of the year, however, there were a number of decisions that soured the dungeon community. The biggest disappointment arguably was the fractured patch, which did not open up any higher tiers and reset personal level progression. Despite this, hard core groups rushed to the new 50 to compete for spots on the announced fractal leaderboard. This leaderboard still does not exist. The mistlock instabilities, which were touted as the reason for the overhaul, proved to be an annoyance at best and progress preventing at worse when certain instabilities and shards were combined. Few if any instabilities provided interesting, tatics changing challenges.

The second blow was the aetherpath, which promised to be permanent, but also replaced an existing dungeon path. We found out that forward-up would be deleted less then 24 hours before the patch went live, from a tangential remark in a dev post on a minor sub forum. This really soured the reception of the new path, which combined with some other problematic design decisions (I have a post about here) has made it one of the least popular dungeons paths.

Fast forward to 2014, through the conclusion of season one and the first chapter of season 2. So far, we have seen no new dungeon content. In a recent interview from a developer, we also learned that there are no new paths currently in the pipeline.

What we have here is a decline in focus on 5-man content, and seemingly a loss in connection with the desires of the dungeon community. We went from the promissing addition of fractals a mere 2 months into the games launch, to 2 good but temporary new dungeon paths, to 2 controversial reworks of existing content, to a 9 month dry spell with nothing to look forward to.

This post was a lot longer then I originally intended, but I don’t want the legitimate frustrations of dedicated pve players to be lost in exaggeration and hyperbole. Dungeon runners aren’t leaving for no reason, the trend is there and this past year has been a huge disappointment.

Nice post.

Very minor nitpick, but it would be 3rd on xfire. World of tanks as far as I know has always been considered an mmo. Not sure I would label it as one, but everyone else seems to. Its even won well known awards as being best mmo etc.

Your point still stands. As far as mmos go, its popular and far from dead.

MMORPGs are quite different from just MMOs. I use the abbreviation because it’s tiring to type MMORPG> World of Tanks is an MMO but it’s a completely different genre of game than WoW or Guild Wars 2, and really can’t be listed in the same list.

I know it’ll happen again, but I know I’ll forget the RPG when talking about MMOs. This is part of the problem with playing these games for a long time. It’s easy forget there are new types of MMOs out there.

I completely understand and agree. I didn’t really think of It like that.
Probably why its hard for me to call it an mmo. I typically think of mmorpg being the only type of mmo.
Wot is definitely not an mmorpg.

for me i think #12 is still way to high
but when i see swotr is on #14 than #12 for gw2 is ok^^

Gw2 is better than most mmos imo. Wow and eve online are the only mmos I find to be Better. Gw2 just lacks endgame, which is why I’m not a huge fan of it.
Swtor is pretty darn successful. It actually rake in a lot more money than gw2 does.

no its not – cause you like it more than other mmos dont mean it is better than most mmos

gw2 is not very attractive for most players – just check twitch (when you count viewers there you will mostly have same list as this raptr list) – and noone on twitch care bout gw2

gw2 was very hyped before and at start from gw2 and gw2 was a sequel from a very popular game – only this brought players

But devs killed it after release with total miss management and incompetent desicions. Looks like gw1 people dont work at arneanet anymore and there are all new people which never cared bout games and gaming in their live but they are good programmers and thats why they have the job

EVERYTHING in gw2 after release was brainstormed to death and had no “FUN” as a maintarget. EVERYTHING in gw2 has not gamers as a target it is made for casuals and bad players who like to spam #1 and being called hero for this

thats why gw2 not popular^^

and check more than this forum here or reddit gw2 and you will see most gamers laugh bout gw2

You know I put “imo” to weed out responses like this. Next time I’ll make sure to spell it out.
Besides WoW, gw2 has the highest “production value” of any theme park mmo I’ve played. It just lacks the direction I want for it.

I have this thing with every single new mmo. I call it the jump test. I immediately get into the game and just simply jump around. Most feel clunky and some feel like butter. It’s actually quite important to me how that jumping feels, as it is usually indicative of how smooth the rest of the game is.
Well, besides wow, gw2 is the only other mmo to actually pass my jump test and it shows. This game is smooothhh and responsive.

Would you consider making traits account unlocks instead of individual unlocks? This will lead new players to content through requiring them to do it, but keep it from annoying the kitten out of people creating alts. It makes sense with how the NPE is now, and would be amazing.

I could get behind this. Or make it like with Elite Tomes from GW1 – you can buy them with Skill Points and use them to select a locked Trait Mastery to learn which is unlocked on another character.

I like it. Fun idea.
