It’s the same thing politicians do when they campaign. This big ol’ list of things they do to mislead you into thinking they are the right choice. Anet did the exact same thing. They acted as if they had all these awesome innovative things and they just didn’t deliver on much of it. I don’t think they ever had plans on half of the things said leading up to release.
I mean, they pretty much admitted to giving up on dynamic events as they weren’t played enough to waste resources on.
The game has slowly been made easier since the game launched. If they are trying to appeal to everyone, they should have made a facebook game. The game is starting to be good at nothing and just okay at everything else.

This^^^^ and it’s called BAIT AND SWITCH which is against the law and prosecuteable in many states, but, "they have a little disclaimer buried in the ToS that protects “them”.

Most gamers see a trailer that talks about all this awesome stuff and assume that the game will be like this because they were told so. I believe most wouldn’t dig too deep into what exactly the game entails and would just base it off of the single video that Arenanet was linking ad nauseam.

It’s not a bait and switch or false advertising because of themselves labeling it a manifesto. They knew people would buy it from the the manifesto video, which is why it was linked by them on every occasion. Very smart on their part to say whatever they want without any true repercussions. Just like every politician.

I don’t see a problem with it. If achievement points offered a real advantage in game, it would be a problem.

But that’s really what this game ends up being about: skins and achievement points.

Anyway, imho, no, gemstore items should never give AP.

As dozens have said over and over since launch, gemstore items can be purchased with gold earned in game. There are other achievements that require some amount of gold to complete as well.

well we loved , GVG HoH, Capes , Anet run mats/sats/dats , Hardmode , End game worlds

Lots of builds/templates/skills

all i can think of for now

I didn’t love GvG, I didn’t love HoH, I could do without capes. Please try not to talk for everyone.

And you know, it’s a four year old line already. Can we move on?

Isn’t Arenanet the one that spoke for everyone? Maybe they are to blame and not the customer base that interprets it exactly as they said it. Sounds like they are making very bold statements that wouldn’t be true for everyone.

They probably have their own personal account. It wouldn’t surprise me if a lot of them don’t want to spend more time on the game after putting in 40+ hours a week into it as well.

The personal account bit is probably true.

Not spending more time is not good. You want devs who love the game, not just treat it as a paycheck. And playing is very different from working on the game.

Some employees not caring about the game itself is more than fine. No need for the network guys to have an interest in the game, there job is done the same either way. Of course there’s a ton more that don’t really matter.

I would note that the hardest most challenging dungeons aren’t played much because they don’t offer good enough rewards. Thats what the gear treadmill people are talking about. If the hard challenging content isn’t significantly more rewarding than easy content, few people will do it.

I think people actually do the challenging content.

I just dont’ think people would repeat them often if it isn’t rewarding.

I doubt this is true. I think most Guild Wars 2 players have barely ever entered a dungeon and I’m pretty sure most have never done Arah.

I’m honestly curious as to what makes you think most of the players don’t frequent dungeons and that most have never even done Arah? Am I missing a dev quote somewhere or are you just making a guess?

So that leaves the question: What have the NA / EU devs really been up to? Just something to think about.

Don’t get your hopes up believing they’ve been working on other things.
They published the game with Kong Zhong, a Chinese publisher.
The NA/EU had assets related to them testing out eastern stuff in our version. Example of this is the datamined stuff from posted from reddit that caused an uproar over here.
ANet have been working on the game for the Chinese release, not some offshoot Chinese branch.

Believing there’s an expansion being worked on. Yeah…unlikely.

If they haven’t even started working on one, that would mean we are still at least a year out. I think they will lose a lot of their playerbase by that time. As others have pointed out in the past, they only have a small portion of their entire team actually working on the living story. There just has to be something bigger going on in the background.

If someone completes the dungeon while you are attempting to selling it, we are not going to take action against that person. If you invite them into your group or list the group via LFG, they are well within their right to finish the dungeon if you decide to leave the boss at 1%.

I only read the OP a few times, but it sounds to me like he’s trying to figure out how it was possible. I don’t think he was asking you to take actions against the player.

I’m sure part of the problem is that the China launch took a huge amount of work and everyone is playing catch up. Pushing the devs to work harder and harder isn’t actually going to get us new content faster. It just means more burnout, which affects the speed at which stuff is released.

Even without the extra pressure, game development and specifically MMO development is just brutal at times. Like it’s almost always crunch time.

People want what they want now, without really understanding why they can’t have it on their schedule.

So that leaves the question: What have the NA / EU devs really been up to? Just something to think about.

I think most people believe they have been working on a full fledged expansion this whole time, including the person you are quoting.

How is this game doing?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Fernling.1729

Fernling.1729

The game will likely be around for many years. Mmos typically do…unless NCsoft has a decision in the matter. I personally think the game has gotten worse over time. Too much fluff for my liking. Things seem to revolve around things I don’t enjoy in a videogame. Like dressing up and collecting pointless minis.
I like to be challenged. PvP in this game is utter garbage, don’t play it at all. PvE is seriously faceroll easy, which can be partially blamed on the AI.

Oddly, I think season 1 living story was better than what we are getting now. Maybe because it offered more than a couple hours of gameplay. Tis a game with serious potential, but with no lasting gameplay. I can take a several month break and come back and enjoy the heck out of the game for about 3-4 hours until I do everything that I missed.

Gw2 has the best mmo engine ever designed..

The game has a serious problem with it’s content. Supposedly we’ve gotten an expansions worth of content, but I can’t tell. It’s been over 2 years now and there is so little to show for it. The game is in dire need of an expansion.

I log back into the game every once in awhile in hopes to enjoy playing, but I find myself wanting more to do. Grinding my butt off for a legendary isn’t my cup of tea. This game has potential, it needs to tap into that potential and offer a real endgame. Maybe then we will see a rising population instead of a declining one.

Does LS eliminate the need for an expansion?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Fernling.1729

The living story had the potential to eliminate the need for expansions, but it failed miserably. The current living story is terrible and doesn’t offer any lasting content or anything else big we would normally see in an mmo’s expansion.

Why people criticize Anet

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Fernling.1729

Fernling.1729

First of all, about the precusor crafting, they did say something, you just missed it. They were working on something that had to be scrapped because of other changes they made. So they’re back to the drawing board on it. Sad, but that’s what happened and they did post about it. Right here in these forums.

The sub par comment is your opinion. Anet isn’t doing a bunch of stuff every single game has done. They’re pretty much in unchartered territory. I’d say the start of the living story was unimpressive, but it got better as time went on, for me anyway. Because I could see improvement, I was happy to wait, because it meant they were on the right track (again my opinion only). The new season 2 stuff is better than anything in Season 1, but the last part of season 1 was pretty kitten ed good anyway. So I don’t agree with that.

I do agree on the armor comment, however, that said, if you look at the amount of elite armor total in Guild Wars 1, you’ll find there is currently far more variety in this game, because of transmutation.

See in Guild Wars 1, even at the end of it’s reign, you only had X number of elite armor sets and level 80 sets (some of which were dreadful in my opinion). However, you have to realize that in Guild Wars 2, with transmutation stones and the ability to mix and match and use ANY skin at level 80, it means there’s more armor in Guild Wars 2 for level 80s than Guild Wars 1. What they don’t have a special unique armor sets. But there are certainly more cosmetic options.

I didn’t say anything about precursor crafting.
I was talking purely about their advertisement of “new legendary weapons and a new legendary type” in 2013.
I’m not that interested in precursor crafting since I could most likely afford to buy it if I really wanted the legendary.
Still – Precursor crafting would be a great addition to this game.

Regarding the whole “sub-par” season 1 – I understand that the episodic format was new and uncharted – but the issues weren’t that. The issues were :

1)buggy releases that gave achievements out easy to those who did them quickly after patch before they got “fixed”.

2)exploitable mechanics that meant players that would play after a patch could make a lot of profit off it before it was fixed.

3)poor story writing – I don’t see how the episodic format or the new model has anything to do with the poor writing that was and still is part of our current in-game story. It’s gotten much better since S2 started but I feel that where the level of quality we have now was the level we should have had at the start of S1, and it should have gotten better.

GW1 had very well written stories and I doubt you’d disagree with me on this part.
GW2’s story – especially the living story should have been better especially after players criticized the Personal Story.

On the transmutation issue – I guess that brings some diversity – but why are you only counting elite armor? Regular level 20 sets were also sets you could wear that gave max stats.

And there were a lot of sets.

The story telling did get better toward the end of season 1. That was part of the improvement. Guild Wars 1 story telling was up and down. The Prophecies story was relatively cliche. Many of the stories had annoying oversights. It wasn’t Shakespeare.

The personal story in Guild Wars 2 was mediocre storytelling (for the most part). But the end of Season 1 was a lot better.

Exploits and bugs exist in every game in almost every patch. I’ve yet to see otherwise. The faster you release stuff, naturally the more bugs it will have. They went with an aggressive schedule, they’re going to have more bugs. It happens to most games these days, because people can’t wait long enough to release stuff.

Welcome to the present.

Man, I didn’t expect you to still be here in full force after this much time. a few hundred posts in the last week alone… You’re bigger and badder than ever before.

Btw this discussion is pointless, we will never know for sure if the population is dropping, how much, why, etc… the only ones who could inform us are devs, but why should they?
Just play until the day GW2 die or you don’t like it anymore, come to the forum for feedback, suggestions and complaints, but for this kind of questions you will probably never get an answer.

I’ve given up telling people I’m not Vayne, they can believe what they want. He doesn’t particularly like me anyway, which is why I find this so amusing.

I don’t know you. You seem like a fine guy to me. I actually admire the passion you have for this game. I feel the same way for other hobbies in my life. None of this is about you personally. I just don’t agree with how you defend the game on nearly every front. You seem to have an excuse for almost every short coming included in this game.

There was actually plenty of times I thought about messaging you in game because I know you’re a good guy and could have possibly made my game experience much better, as I was playing by myself in a guild by myself. I tried guilds, but was unable to find one mature enough to suit me. I really want it to be known that I actually think very highly of you.
It just seems like you are on call 24/7 to defend ArenaNet at the slightest hint of negativity.
Ps
you made a post on reddit about how you quit the forums right when you made the post here as vayne. Your name on reddit was the same as this one.

Population falling ?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Fernling.1729

Fernling.1729

It’s dropping because there are better gaming options there at the moment. Sorry, F2P doesn’t cut it anymore.

The content is super weak and disappears in two weeks time and half of the patches are dedicated to functionality which should’ve been there from the beginning. I’ll pay for a service I value but not when half the game is in the cash shop.

It’s not dropping. We ALL know you don’t like this game. We all know you prefer WoW. We all know that a lot of people hate wow. But making up stuff to try to push a game you like is like self fullfilling prophecy.

There’s zero evidence the population is dropping. Zero…evidence.

Do you hear about mass layoffs? Nope. Do you see huge panic going on at NcSoft at stockholder meetings. Nope.

Do you see people coming back to this game every single day on reddit. Yep. So much so that people are complaining about all the returning player posts.

Stop using a personal prejudice to draw a conclusion that may or may not be warranted.

Oh look it’s Vayne defending the honor of Guild Wars 2.
You speak of prejudice as if you have none, which we all know is not true. The amount of time you spend defending the game in this forum(and others) is beyond ridiculous. You attack people with semantics when they are just sharing their experiences with the game.
You also keep talking about how the game isn’t declining in population and that everyone else is wrong. About how your server, which just happens to be one of the most populated servers in the game is always full of people. Even some of the truly dying mmos have at least one populated server.

You say everyone else is wrong and the game is not declining in population, where is your evidence of this? Both sides of the party are just basing population on anecdotal evidence and bother parties are just making wild guesses(even you).

Were there mass layoffs and panics before they shut down CoH?

You do realize swtor isn’t a fail, right?
Last year alone it made well over twice as much money as gw2 did.

SW:TOR ist for sure a fail – or has been a fail. The cartel market is their cash cow releasing kittenty stuff like live day in a Star Wars universe. So yes, they are making money with their shop. That’s it. And you can’t even compare GW2 with SW:TOR in terms of quality despite GW2 is free2play and SW:TOR isn’t.

I think ANet is doing very well with their decisions of the b2p model. TESO will mostly fail because of the p2p AND the mediocre quality it delivers. P2P requires high quality, polishing and so on.

Sorry, it’s far from a fail.
And for the record gw2 isn’t f2p and swtor is f2p.
