So… Talking with guildies and other people I pvp with on a regular basis we are all in agreement that because of the meta, good condition removal, better access to stability, and a more forceful burst while retaining SOME defensiveness… Yes eles are in a better position than mesmers in this meta. Because of these simple things
1. Better condi removal through ether renewal and cleansing wave
2. Better access to defensive boons
3. Some almost instant burst with air skills.

All in all most people I PvP with on the regular agree that eles are in a better place than mesmers.
Add to this that any team we faced in recent tournaments with a mesmer lost every match. Team had a mesmer they lost. Team had an ele they had a much better chance of winning… Not to mention we had an ele as well.

dunno, sounds to me like you are talking about bunker ele, since the only way you can have access to all that is through either cantrips water/arcana or water/earth , either case you wont be doing jack squat damage nor bringing any utility to the team, at all, since all those buffs with exception to attunement buffs are selfies.

Perhaps [definitely] those mesmers were really bad, I have no issues running a full zerker mesmer in the current meta and surviving, while bring chaos storm, stealths, buffs, damage, utility, etc etc, yeah conditions are a bummer but arcane thievery is not only awesome by stealing 3 boons, but also giving 3 conditions back, as for CC it has never really been a problem to me, blink and the other utility taht leaves a clone behind and stealths you are stunbreakers and instant.

I run GS/Staff 20/20/0/0/30 shatter zerker build and never had any issues at all. GS for when Im alone, staff when Im surrounded by people and Im with the team. As for ele? 1v1? dont even think about it! The rest of the match is tagging along someone until a opportunity presents to play like a wanna-be thief; wait and unload, once somone else does all the work for you. Thats how most eles play lately with the S/D build which is just that, a thief wanna be burster which unlike thieves, need to surrounded by mates who can set them up, who can keep them alive and god forbids you leave that mate, making you a weight instead of an asset

buffing 1 class each patch to “bring it on par with the others” just increases the power creep.
It’s way better to balance by nerfing other OP things

Lets be honest here, do you actually think, given how poorly managed have been the resources for PvP, that they would actually go through the trouble to nerf 7 classes when they could just do a bandaid fix instead? I can guarantee you, they will either leave it as it is, no ele representation for another 1-2 years, then at some point eles will be sooo far behind that they might as well mae us into another april fool class

Though I guarantee you that if the post about the possible changes on Oct 15 are true, all that eles are getting is higher healing (on a skill that still cant land, and even if it does, not worth 200 healing every 1 second, IF the intended target, the ally, is in melee range of the person you are attacking) or their gimmick Conjures getting buffed…..way to go, they basically want you to go hammer them away full glass cannon without cantrips , and without fixing the inherent issues with eles; the cant go outside water/arcana 40-60 points with cantrips if they want to be more than an innefective kamikaze. But oh well, we all know Anet is really good and fast when it comes to balancing, as showed in GW where it took ages (several years, 2-3) to get some classes going…

From what I gather, the point of the videos was that he played all of the classes terribly, but was able to succeed on some but not others.

I don’t think that’s a good way to show ele’s problems, because the game shouldn’t be balanced around ppl who are playing every class poorly. I don’t care if a poorly played ele performs way worse than a poorly played thief. What I want is for a well-played ele to perform as well as a well-played guardian/thief/whatever. This thread doesn’t really address that issue imo.

But it was amusing watching him click stuff randomly =)

Lol it isnt supposed to be taken seriously, this is just some refreshing videos that kind of humorize a very sad situation for eles. Consider it our way to vent our frustrations

ya ele runs 30 water 30 arcane. maybe sometimes 20/30 or 30/20 but im unaware of any meta build that didnt put 50+ into those 2 trees.

meh, the gameplay isnt even fun why do i care about balance?

Because you want to believe, that maybe they might get some love. You know, peopel often ridiculize when someone get “attached” to a character in an “online game”, but they have to realize, that when you put time and effort into something, that something gains value. You, like many others want to see what we deserve, and right now we are only getting kicks in the groins patch after patch

Engis and rangers actually have a great time in exploring open world, doing dungeons compared to an ele which brings about half of the stuff they do. Currently the only thing eles are good for is staff WvW, and thats not enough to bring them up from C.

Also, I noticed one of the main problem with engis in PvE in general is that they try to play condition -_- , I hate when I get an engi that is doing a pewpew damage …. like seriously condition = PvP, damage = PvE…

That’s a great come back. Let me know when you have an actual response. So far your counter arguments have been “must not be any good” “some ele you are” and “lol, ele requires a high skill floor”.

Please ignore him, he has been purposely trying to derail the thread and provoke the people. It is a shame mods dont take action against such obvious trolls which add nothing to the discussion with detrimental comments plagued with “LOLOLOZ L2P N0Obz” but with a little more “sugarcoating” so it isnt as obvious. Remember, if you dont feed the trolls they will starve.

I feel like some of the complaints are a little exaggerated here. The current role that an ele can play are pretty dumb, but its not that everything we can do is useless. The issue with ele comes down to very poor risk/reward.

You exposed several good posts which make this response too long so I wont paste it all, but basically you have to realize that, back then the warrior and necros were strong, only that not many people knew it, if you look at the patch notes that lead to their “rebirth”, their actually werent enough to warrant that. They were already strong from the start and even the “pros” were admitting that some stuff were unneeded, in fact, a necro player in the SoTG said that he already could bring that much destruction on his necro, the only thing they did was make it more available to everyone. As for eles, are you aware of how many ele “pros” have quited the class because even when playing top notch they fall behind the rest? Are you aware of how many times these top notch eles have said that the “skill floor ceiling” excuse is just a poor excuse to not implement much needed fixes?

Truth of the matter is; eles do are in a much worse state than people want to admit, since they are still scarred by the old D/D and they simply hate us (despite most of us not ever liked nor played that specc) leaving people who have always played staff and S/F on the dust.

Personally i feel warriors are too rewarding for the amount of tankiness, utility and damage they bring, compared to the rest of the classes, and this goes for about almost ever aspect of the game.
You have classes which are also quite awesome in most enviroments like mesmers and guardians, but given how boring/dragging leveling a mesmer is, I would say they get some points off, still, the utility damage is quite gooood. Same goes for guardians. Then you have all those in the middle, kind of not that bad at all but not precisely needed either, like engis, rangers or thieves, which in the case of thieves, other than insta killing stuff and being OP in pvP, they got no place everywhere else, except maybe skipping mobs in dungeons.
Lastly you have classes that have been hit by the nerf hammer time after time, the buffs it gets usually go on the opposite direction of what they need, and while they havent been really “nerfed” all that much, everyone else in comparisonhas been SEVERELY buffed, making them fall off in terms of damage, utility and survival, thats were eles are atm. Not exactly what you would need for a party, damage cant out do a warrior/guardian/mesmer except for the hammer build, which gets screwed by being temporal, charged based, usually lose the hammer in PvP scenarios due to random people taking it or when the battle moves away from it, and n order to hit hard you need to be glass cannon…melee, with no defense mecahnics….basically a total mes of a class. They wanted to make a 1 man army and ended up halfway there with nothing relaly going on for them

Compare this to engie nades/bombs or necro marks: they pop once and the entire effect (damage + conditions) are applied. Nerf those to be more like staff.

Whilst agree with everything else you’ve said, I find this statement hypocritical. What is Flame Burst if not an effect that is applied at once at the target’s location?

Anyway, my suggestion for anet would be to make Gust hit up to 3 targets in a cone in front of you. It doesn’t feel right that it only hits 1.

Well, technically speaking it has unlimited targets atm, they made it so it goes through all enemies. Did we ask for that? No, we asked that it landed on at least ONE enemy……

Play an ele and be frustrated in every match you play. Ele right now is suited for masochistic players only.

yah, sadly. I still play mine because i have invested so much time and money on it , im sill emotionally attached. I have found guardian to be quite effective but the transition is a little hard. Perhaps as more eles abandon the class the more attention it draws to it.

Im sure ANet is slightly aware of the problem, but I kinda lost my faith when they said eles were “ok” in the last SoTG

Ele is to hard for him so he wants to changed so its easier for him.
Pro ele tip. Swap attunes before your attacks land so they have a very high chance to crt. Also you can swap attunes when you are casting. I thought i would give you some tips you seem to need them.

On sPvP forum there was a tier thread made with predominantely warriors/necros at the top and elementalists at the bottom (on every single post lol!) . I want to see whats the community’s take on classes currently in all aspects of the game; PvE, PvP, WvW, Dungeons, Roaming, Exploring, etc…

Tiers

>S Class : Basically all those classes that breeze trhough most content, has no problem finding group nor role in all aspects of the game

>A class : Somewhat as effective as class S, but not quite.

>B class : More of a niche role, debatable status

> C class: Hard in most scenarios, played mostly by casuals and lovers who cant let go of their class due to the amount of time and money and items they have already committed to it.

I will start:

S- Warriors
A- Guardian, Mesmer, Thieves, Necros
B- Engis, Ranger
C: Eles

I was going to post a really long wall of text that could probably be skipped due to how beautifully explained everything has been.

We are in a very sad balancing state, it will take a little bit more than tool fixes and buffing the gimmick conjures, Im looking specifically at you, staff.

Sadly, the most fun profession (concept wise) turned from “attune to the right element at the right moment” to “better switch through all attuenemnts, use all utilities and hope that got them, you might come half way across as effective as that dude over there who used 3 skills in one weapon, switched, used one utility and 2 other skills in the other weapon and won”

Sadly, another post that will get ignored while “We love you Anet, more minis and JP please xoxoxox” get responses 1 hour later.

to be fair… elementalist have the most strongest burst heals, eaiest acess to stability/protection…. this meta just happens to have too much damage, and boon hate for them to survive…

bur if you remember, before necro/spirit rangers, there was countless threads about how this low HP class was impossible to kill on 1v1 :p

Exactly, ele was the strongest profession in PvP for about 8 months out of the 13 the game has been released. Just because some other professions got accidentally overbuffed recently doesn’t make the ele bad or poorly-designed.

“accidentally” ? lol, accidentally is giving a class an extra stun breaker on several skills due to some programing problem, not straight up giving them damage, healing coefficient, trait fixes, condition duration, more damage, capability to be 3x tankier than the old “OP” bunker D/D ele while pumping out 4x times the damage and utility.

If you think D/D bunker was bad in their days then I dont know what to think about bunker zoo ranger or bunker engi or condi necro who is as tanky but virtually melts you with conditions (funny, conditions were meant for ong drawn battles, to win due to attrtition, but 5-6 conditions in less than 3 seconds, nearly 25 stacks of bleed and anything short of 15 k hp will die in less than 4-5 seconds, and eles have 11k hp….so ….)

i think nerfing everything at this point is a good idea, everyone has a little bit too much as is.

agreed, perhaps that might help the situation, still wouldnt address the core issues with ele survavility but could definitely put a patch on the wound for a bit. Maybe later on down on the road we will see the risk/reward being balanced and eles having some reliable damage

Ahem… mesmer cannot afford to go full glass cannon. A full glass mesmer has noooo condition removal. none in their weapons and none in their skills. Clones only confuse absolute morons. And at full glass our damage is still subpar to a stunlock warrior or any form of thief and glass eles.

umm, I play full glass cannon mesmer with arcane thievery, get some point for clones to remove conditions on shatter, sometimes I feel like getting clones to remove boons on shatter. Dunno but you might be playing mesmer wrong, I hav never played anything but zerker on it and do more than fine…

You are not full glass. You are 30 deep into inspiration. The only damage you kitten all damage by not going for iPersona as a glass build and phantasm builds in tourneys are not nor never have been viable.

like I said, only do it every now and then, Im currently running 20/20/0/0/30, how is that not damage? Also, why the need to throw curses, does that make you a bigger boy?

If other squishy classes can get away with going glass and make up for it with their class mechanics/abilities then Ele should too.

If you go glass on Ele you die instantly lol.

Eles can put on zerkers but they’re arguably inferior at it.
However so what? Some amulets suit other professions better based on how that prof plays.
For instance how much sense does a Shaman amulet make on a guardian when their only condition is burning? Not much, but so what?

Yes but a guardian can run knight, zerker, soldier, valkiry. You go the guardian forum asking for viable speccs and the first 2 questions are; do you want damage or do you want support? Followed by weapon choice. You have an almost endless amount of trait combinations, I literally have retraited my guard more than 20 times and each time is a completely different build with new added bonuses and sacrifices that completely change my play style. Ye,s , guard cant play conditions, so what ? your point is? They can play about almost any other build. Eles? Bunkers or innefective kamikazes….how is that an option? You go to an ele forum asking for build and 9/10 times they end up with cantrips and at elast 20-50 into water/arcana. And only 3 weapons to choose from really.

Definetely I didn’t sign to be a poor man substitute of the d/d thief , by having no stealth, no meaningful escapes and no cheesy easy burst combo.
I made the ele thinking I’d play a similar version of the GW1, an improved version that’s it..after all warrior-thieves-necros-mesmers get to enjoy an improved version of their favourite profession from GW1…only in the ele case we get a worst version.

Then yes you’re correct, the GW2 ele as it stands now it’s not for me, people like your friend may enjoy the whole the “all or nothing” playstyle..but the majority of us doesn’t like the current ele.

I play videogames for fun ..not for personal approval from an unknown person over the internet, I don’t care about being considered pro , noob or whatever , I only want to play a 4 elements based profession like I did in GW1 and not get frustated over it..is that too much to ask?

Ele has a high skill ceiling. You can tell a very good ele from a bad one. A best eles are also pianists. The only buff ele needs is to staff and focus and maybe changing arcane trait line. Thats really all. The rest of the class is all positioning and waiting for the meta to be more favorable.

funny thing, I play piano, and quite well (more than 12 years of experience), I do relatively well in game with about any profession including ele, despite all its flaws, but just like I also can tell when a profession is high ceiling and when I profession uses the “high ceiling” excuse to justify its ineffectiveness.

I keep hearing the “high skill ceiling” excuse, but even almost perfectly played eles cant stand toe to toe to an equally matched skill-wise players playing any other profession, as proved by the few ele “pros” remaining after the unnecessary nerfs to the class coupled with never-stopping buffs to other classes. Please do not elude yourself into thinking you are of a higher cast, most of us have mastered the class quite fine, me having played for over 90% of my time as an ele can say I know what Im doing.

Get off your high horse and stop justifying stuff, if the only counter argument you have is “your friend” can kil people with ele then I advice to roll and ele and play it out for yourself to see their flaws, only then will you have the right to dispute us and the “pros” on the state of a very deteriorated class.

Perhaps Im getting this wrong, but arent low hp classes justified by strong defensive mechanism built in into their core mechanics that make up for it?

Some general information for newer members to the forums;
low;11k hp
medium;15k hp
high; 18khp

Example;

Thieves have access to teleports (which finally are starting to be used a little more thanks to the deserved perma stealth nerfs), plenty of dodges, and the unrivaled stealth. To top it off some speccs are heavily invested in blinds which are probably the ultimate defense mechanic for big hits Also medium armor does contribute a little bit.

Mesmers dont have low hp (they actually have medium) but they have access to clones, stealth which well used can lead them to be nearly uncatchable in the right hands (my hands). Also aegis and blinds.

Guardians have high upkeep of protection, aegis, plenty of blinds, heavy armor, everything they do pretty much heal them (love that, I play an AH build and with staff #4 i go from 10-90 easily! <3 )

Elementalists ?! Low armor, blinds on really long CD, most of them have giant trade-offs like 30 seconds cooldown (air signet) and need a target and lose movement bonus unless you go into earth 30, air staff #2 has a really long wanding up time and can be easily seen and avoided by LoS and dodges. So basically comes down to healing and cantrips.

Thats what bothers me, cantrips are pretty much a must in almost any build that wants to have any form of defense, and the only tree outside water/arcane that give any benefice is fire, which gives 3 might stacks on usage (which compared to getting vigor, health regen, a condition taken away when regen is applied and 20% off CD, it is a non brainer to go for water instead)

In order to take benefice of said healing you need to go into water for healing points and health, which give you effective health as opposed to just flat health, which forces you to increase said effective health by getting toughness. There arent many stat combos with power/toughness/offensive trait., so then you need fury, which comes only on arcana tree. By then you need to take evasive arcana which is about 30% of an ele DPS and utility. RIght there we just spent 30 in water and 30 in arcana, and that was just to be able to have access to our way of “defense”. 10 remaining point usually go to air BttH.

An ele playing anyhing but D/D will have nearly no usage for this build outside “supporting” since no damage can really come out of it.

Am I missing something or is the ele’s issue that we have no “defense” mechanism that isnt directly tied to cantrips and dependance of water/arcane?
Most other classes seems to have their offensive directly tied to defense; aka mesmers sacrifice clones (defense) in shatter for offensive ower. Thieves get out of stealth or stop dodging to attack you, guardians have to come close and personal to hug you. Eles? run around like a chicken until your cantrips are up once every 75-90 secs so you can have a chance at a fight.

Well this explains everything, as the guy above me said, you are seeing it from outside therefore you assume it is better than it actually is.

And was the condescending tone really necessary? Did your lack of argumentation made you fall that low that you had to throw the “skill” bomb in order to “support” your point?

I have watched some other threads of yours, I wont generalize but I will say that given your latest thread “classes and what they do” (paraphrasing here) that you have a deep lack of understanding of what classes really do. You sir do not deserve to be in my thread if you do not give positive feedback and all you bring is “u SUck N0obz” arguments.

If you think a S/D kamikaze is a balanced build, with no utilities, no stunbreakers, no defense, easily avoidable damage by anyone with a dodge and 2 brain cells and way better than a mindless thief which well played is uncatchable and can drop you from 100-0 without been seen, or better than a warrior who landed one root and followed with a frenzy 100b, or a mesmer who casts izerker at 1200 range followed by 4 shatters, then you sir, are delusional or ignorant.

Basically the game to me has boiled down to;

Look at the reward for the current LS;

-No: get back to what you really want to do; explore, level up alts, gather materials for my legendary, do dungeons, go to frostforge and tryout different build/combinations on the mobs there.

I wanted the SAB stuff, I really liked the SAB first time, but I just cant keep up with everything, so instead Im doing nothing. Kind of like in RL; too many things to do, just curl up in a little ball iunder the bed sheets until all the problems fade away, just to realize it is only making it worse and then at the last minute you just have to scramble and blaze your way trhough, thats not fun

s/d fresh air ele does the best burst in the game. The only issue with ele is how you have to constantly swap attunes/ no stay in attune build diversity and the attacks on focus and staff. Thats really it. Eles aren’t in that bad of the place its just how the meta is.

actually no, the best burst is still held for thieves agaisnt moving targets and warriors for CC’ed targets. And before you say that “eles burst is AoE” I remind you that 2 of the main hitting point of that build are single targetted, lighting and arcane missile. Damage aside, the fact that to be able to land all that you need incredible amount of setting up could be offset if it wasnt that you have to sacrifice 2 utilities in order to attain the damage that every other profession is already given in their weapon, leaving no room for defense nor utility for the team. Something that neither thieves, mesmers, warriors or necros have to think about given how their survavility is not tied to kamikaze tactics and how they bring several buffs as well as utility skills on top of their weapon skills.

And yes, I agree that staff need faster auto attack, but first the unresponsiveness of the weapon has to be addressed. As well as the lack of damage outside fire attunement, the inherent problem with gust which failed even against almost standing targets, long CDs and the fact that you have to be constantly switching attunements instead of just when actually needed in order to attain something all “mindless professions” (as many say) do without giving it much thought or even trying.

Hello sir, please tell how you are managing to allocate 40-60 trait points into water magic. You must truly be a master of hydromancy, and I would like to learn from you.

Easy, first you start by being in an iceberg, at that point you should have air unlocked. All you have to do is talk to an female NPC that does water spells, she is ussually accompanied by a totally useless ad that has less hit points than a critter. Once you escort her to the other town in Frostforge you will be given a skill point challenge that lets you unlock the water.

What if brought up the elementalist from the bottom?

I believe the class in on the brink of being viable, only needing some relatively minor fixes to the arcane tree, allocation of traits so that it doesnt cut into our build, 40-60 points having to go into water/arcana is not exactly my definition of versatility. Given the latest AoE nerfs and how staff is still on such a horrible state I think that we can remove the learning wheels on AoE and give them a little more power, less telegraphed and more responsiveness and reliability. Lastly maybe you might want to reconsider the whole survivability of eles at the moment, we arent exactly very variable in our build if everyone has to resort to 2-3 cantrips and tnaky stats in order to perform on “decent” or at least equal level to other glass cannon builds who can forsake any kind of defense by simply having aegis/stealth/stealth&clones.

Sure you can say that we are getting our gimmick mechanic “conjures” buffed, but that doiesnt address our core issues, also, everyone is gettting buffed too, making it a powerlevel. This is a visual representation of whats happening;

What if instead that gets completely reset and you get taken to the character selection part where you have to pick the “personal story blueprint” ?

Problem solved for all cases.. like creating a enw char but with all the armors and weapons and map completition and dungeons and unnecesarily souldbound stuff out there.

sadly thats the current state of eles, hence why I rerolled guardian. I still check this forum as a not-friendly reminder of how my favorite class got turned to dust, not by nerfing them into useless, but instead a smal nerf here, another small nerf there, a major nerf there, a marginal buff there, another small nerf there, and BAM, buff every class x1000 times….

I now roll guardian and I have noticed that even my gaurd has better roaming potential than my ele…and guardians arent exactly the best roamers out there….

The tittle already gives a pretty good idea what this is going to be about so i will be brief.

I played ele for 11 months, bought and used plenty of limited skins (like the unlimited tools, special skins) but in light of recent balancing discontents I have decided to roll a guardian and never been happier about it except for one tiny problem;

All those skins are now waste on a character I no longer use and I can no longer retrieve and put on my new main.

Anet, Im usually not the type for this but, if you could implement an item tat made stuff soulbound into accountbound that would be great.

I guarantee you that money will be made, specially since most of those stuff are items that you cant get anymore (it isnt that I like the unlimited part, but I want the animations from the tools, and the shatterer wings)
