@mulch: I actually had a much similar discussion with a good friend and guild mate yesterday, her pointing out that the stat increase was really negligible and how GW2s whole system didn’t even really allow for vertical progression akin to our typical WoW clone, and how she’d seen MUCH worse. Me making the point that they still turned their back on their manifesto, and how I found it difficult to believe that they woudln’t do worse once they started down this road…
The thing is: I can understand both sides of this particular argument. If the cap stayed at Ascended now – at least for the next 2 years or so – fine with me; because I know that the stat increase really is basically negligible. I’d still feel miffed about being lied to though, and have ultimately lost my trust in Anet. In German we would say “Wer einmal lügt, dem glaubt man nicht” (You don’t believe someone who lied to you once already). The sad thing is that those of us who love the fixed level cap really don’t have an alternative to turn to, while there are ots of alternatives for the crowd eager for vertical progression.
100% agreement to the OP that way.
I believe there are different teams working at bugfixes and creating new content.
The thing is: They can’t really abandon either, if they want to keep players interested.
The easiest way is actually to buy from karmy vendors, especially now that we get karma jugs with our dailies At least at lvl 70, where the exotic pieces are really not yet necessary (nor really achievable), you should get by that way without grinding anything.
Mind you, some of that cool armor comes from drops – so there’s no guarantee if or where you’ll get it Also, DO mix and match – it does look good most of the time, and adds a lot of variety
In general, you can get lots of variety if you just mix between crafting armor, karma armor, armor drops and the stuff you get from your personal story, quite early on. If you played GW1, you also have the heritage armor to choose from. Frankly, I don’t think I’m wearing any lvl 80 skins at lvl 80…would have to check though.
I believe Thief is better for PvP, Necro can hold its own in WvW though.
This is awesome! Thank you very much for putting this together
Go out and explore – exploring (includes doing hearts) nets you a really good amount of exp
In general though: Do yourself a favour and don’t try to get to lvl 80 as quickly as possible. Endgame is not that much different from the rest of the game, so you might as well enjoy the journey
See it like this: Those people are simply not good enough to manage the dungeon with a necromancer
Now, do you really want to play with people who have such a narrow mindset?
My guild keeps running dungeons with at least 3 necros, works just fine…
Also, I believe I need to keep mentioning this: Every profession has problems, and every profession forum is full of people complaining how their profession is worst off and unplayble and oh so bugged…we’re just nothing special that way.
I like the option of having different guilds for different activities – just as I have different circles of friends and acquaitances in real life (those at university, the ones I meet at sports, the ones I do other hobbies with and the people I’ve just known for ages).
I do want alliances back though
In all seriousness, I have to agree that monthly achievements probably just weren’t designed with casuals in mind. They are not for me, I do not enjoy doing them – so I just ignore them. Once I did complete a monthy achievement, but saw that the rewards really didn’t justify the annoyance it brought me – so I stopped caring. Should I mention that I also don’t care about Legendaries?
I am always civil (I think…)
And it would sure be nicer on any forum if people simply made it a point to be reasonable, watch their language, think before they post, and maybe, just maybe – try to stay polite.
Also, calling everyone expressing criticism a “whiner” is degrading – if you really feel that way, please at least make the effort of trying to find out if the person you are talking to is notorious for complaining about various things, or if you might just be talking to someone who rarely voices their concerns. Please.
I’m pretty much doing this, too. I did try Fractals, and while I like the overall design idea (and was thrilled by the fractured voice-overs, for some reason), I didn’t have too much fun doing them so I probably won’t spend much time in Fractals in the future.
I’m just really worried that this will hamper my chances for enjoying future content updates…
The deal with the lack of endgame in GW2 was -supposed to be- that you would find “end-game activities” nearly every step of the way. No one forces you to grind dungeons once you reach max lvl. You could also go for world completion, do all the jumping puzzles, participate in WvW, level alts to experience the story from different viewpoints,…
What do you really expect of endgame? And why did you stop playing if you had fun? Why not at least try to reach the end of the journey? You could still stop playing after reaching lvl 80, until they come up with an extension that you like…
Yes, it should – because quite frankly, I don’t see any viable reason why i shouldn’t. I just don’t get why people would want to have to grind for something which enables them to enjoy all the content a game has to offer without feeling handycapped. There’s a reason GW1 was the only “MMORPG” I played for more than 2 days prior to GW2…
I just like being completely flexible in what I want to do and when I want to do it. Heck, I wouldn’t mind it if we abandoned lvls completey…Frankly, the only use I see in this is “seeing a tangible ‘reward’ for an increase in skill (i.e. learning to play and thereby having access to a wider range of abilities)” – but I really wouldn’t need 80 levels for this, nor do I need any further increase in numbers past this.
Well said OP.
Hopefully, at some point, the people in charge will understand this too >_>
Quite frankly, it was pretty easy to get information about the event from this forum and the official wiki. Heck, we even had a sticky thread for it! And, of course, you could always ask other players ingame. I think you can expect a certain amount of self-initiative from people, especially those who feel like they must read up on everything first. We were even spammed with ingame-mail concerning information about the event!
Personally, I think it would be no fun to always tell us what the rewards will be beforehand…
No Open World PvP, thank you very much – we have WvW for that. I do see GvG in our future though Happy for those who care, but I’m just not a PvP person.
GW has always been about instanced PvP, btw – that’s one of the core principles of GW PvP: Putting everyone on equal footing, to let skill sort out the rest.
I was wondering about that even in low level areas, because I really never had any gear that was worse than what they were selling, even if my gear was at least 5 levels behind…
Yeah…think about it from the viewpoint of someone starting when you can have a complete set of ascended gear, each costing 50 ectos – that is quite an investment.
Not to mention the cost of the other ingredients.
Especially if our other concerns (= this gear merely being the first step in vertical gear progression and/or this gear, together with the infusion slots, becoming mandatory for future expansions) prove to be founded, too…
Not to mention the fact that the need for even more ectos actually sets you back quite bit on your way to your legendary – so much for closing the gap.
Thank you Anet for proving yet again that my fears were well-founded.
…
Can’t we PLEASE just scrap the stat increase on these things?
…well, if my brand new GPU hadn’t decided to go down the drain on saturday…>_>
Seriously though, I know that some of the lag was due to my system (mostly the fps drop) and my not so stellar internet connection. However, that doesn’t explain 1minute skill delay
I mostly use the Black Lion Salvage kits for rare stuff, because I have quite a few of them lying around
…seriously, people? We all keep complaining about how rewards could be improved, and now that we DID get decent rewards, you complain that you couldn’t be there?
I’m happy with what I got, even though I can’t really use any of it (except for the bag and the shell) – at least I got something yellow and orange for a change.
Also, I had quite a lot of fun with the event – althugh the lag was terrible, I couldn’t play on my new system (which could have easily handled the graphics at least), ankittenpt dying because the lag prevented me from dodging or I was overrolled before I even saw the crappy crabs coming. I just loved the community’s humor in those situations, when most of us were dead on the ground until a small rescue squad made the rounds reviving everyone.
Well, awesome – I wanted to wait with doing this dungeon until I get my GPU replacement >_> Hopefully my guild is still actively playing by then…
sigh Wouldn’t it be nice if we had more players who just enjoy helping others doing something for the first time, enjoying the content, instead of always going for the most profitable activity? (I just spent the last 2 hours accompanying a friend I invited, running around Metrica province…and I had so much fun )
You won’t need to grind through previous phases to be able to participate in phase 3 I believe – just hop on a ship in Lion’s Arch to reach the Karka-infested Island
Sooo…what components will you need to buy, exactly? It’s kind of difficult to help you if we don’t know :/
I suppose you can reuse your case, your HDD,…maybe some of your RAM?
Sooo my problem won’t be fixable by Anet – apparently, I just received a bad GPU which will need to be complained >_>
Stupid brand new GPU…grml
Ahhh, why did my GPU have to break now of all times ;_; Well, at least the shatterer and Southsun Cove will still be there when I get my replacement sigh
There’s one event you can quite easily farm, if you like, because it starts in 5-min cycles I believe – in the outpost you discovered if you accompanied the Consortium guy, the area with the “under new management” jumping puzzle.
Have to agree on this one – the island is absolutely beautiful, but the rewards for killing the rather tough mobs are more than underwhelming (and I haven’t received a single rare since the update, either, no matter where I was (hello boss-chests in TA and HoM) and veterans still don’t drop anything for me). I am fine with the challange they provide (except, maybe, the veteran karkas – I hate it when they just pop up behind my back ^^°), but to get absolutely no reward for killing something like that twice (yes, I figured out that armor-thing pretty quickly, but still)…not fun.
And I’m not even worried about farming (I just don’t. Period.) – but, you know, it would be kind of nice to be rewarded for taking on hard enemies :/
I have – doesn’t do anything for me. Still looking into the driver sweeper method.
I’m no “bro” btw
sigh At least my MacBook is still capable of running GW – I hope. Haven’t really tried it since last week…
I don’t have anything on that system except GW2 – and the graphics only begin to go crazy once I start the launcher. Will look for that driver sweeper though…
What does “bricked” mean, exactly? And why should my brand new GPU be broken, anyway? It never even reached 50°C and was merey running 5 days now… ;_;
Doesn’ do anything for me, btw – GW2 and my GPU don’t seem to like each other anymore
How do I do that?
Edit: Tried doing that with MSI-Afterburner; The GW2 Launcher still makes the most interesting…pixel-errors, I guess (flickering white pixels on my screen).
…aaaaand now it’s completely broken/crashes immediately.
Frustrating thing is, my system is brand new – was assembled on monday -_- And was running GW2 just fine.
(edited by Frotee.2634)
I can only find a Gw2.dat, but no local.dat in that folder
I just found out that installing a slightly older driver doesn’t change anything. Now, let’s see how the newest beta-driver fares…(though I have a sinking feeling that I’ll have to play the rest of the event on my old system >_>)
Edit: Nope, beta-driver is even worse.
(edited by Frotee.2634)
So everything was perfectly fine until ~10 minutes ago.
Then, GW2 crashed (was out of the room at that time), telling me there was an …unrepeatable (?) bug with my GPU driver.
Now, when I restart, the graphics keep…flickering/crystallizing and showing a black screen every few seconds.
GPU in question is a GeForce GTX 660, running with the 306.97 driver.
Any help?
Eggs? Saballa? Apparently, you managed to get much further with the event than I did
Look it up on twitter – they are aware of it and working on a fix.
I actually like his voice – a lot. However, it does feel somewhat…weird not to be the central hero of the story, but rather just the second in command to a NPC. We are just so used to being the one(s) in the center of attention that we get jealous of him I suppose What with the game starting with “This is my story” and everything
Dear OP,
…That was a sarcastic proposal – right? Right? (With these forums, you never know)
I took the absence of new Halloween headgear in Guild Wars this year as a sign that a certain sword might be about to swing again.
Lolwut?
Devil horns at the start, for free.
Witch hat at the end, for free.
Phantom mask, for gems.
And two gem outfits. Please do not post blatant misinformation.
As for the op. Given that fantasy is not your mainstay, even if gw2 were guaranteed to live forever im not sure your enthusiasm would perk up. You seem a bit jaded and depressed over coh and bitter towards ncsoft.
Not a criticism of you, just that it seems you might be a little caught up on the recent past to actually enjoy the present, and that is something you will have to work through.
Even if ncsoft let anet go, tyria would remain ncsofts.
Ah, I believe Tachenon was referring to GW1
Who is the vocal minority, then? I’d still like to see numbers on how many people prefer item progression and how many don’t
Nope, since I sure as hell won’t have more free time on my hands. Actually, I even feel somewhat less motivated right now…that announcement was like a punch to the gut for me, and I still feel it.
if we didn’t have a power creep when new content was released people would fly through it in a day or two and complain when there is nothing to do again, a power creep gives the dev atleast a few weeks even months before the excessive whining starts on the forums.
…ah, yes – and what exactly makes you think those same people will NOT get bored within a short time frame (we’re talking roughly 2 months for an entirely new game here) WITH power creep? There’s just nothing to seriously keep people from getting bored who find nothing to do with themselves in a new game world after only 2 months.
And maybe you should allow for the possibility that the people complaining about the power kreep might just not be same ones who kept complaining about not having vertical progression after lvl 80/exotics and therefore nothing to to.
…*sigh*.
Couldn’t you just read up on what we already posted?
One of the major point is that by introducing item progression, they’ve turned on one of their design principles – incidentally, somewthing which attrackted long time fans an otherwise informed customers (you know, those among us who actually knew what we were getting into). We feel betrayed because it took them a whole 2 months to inch closer to becoming a generic WoW clone with regards to market positioning!
We are also feeling miserable because the blog clearly states that “This is just the beginning. In November, we’re only adding the first level of Infusions and Ascended Rings and Back slots, so that leaves us a lot of room to build upon these levels of Item progression in future content.” – ergo those 2 pieces of Ascended gear are likely only the tip of the iceberg.
In the same line of thought, we feel like we are just no longer the target segment (after all of two months of enjoying the hell out of this game) – and if you start listening to the demands of people who don’t know what to do with themselves in this huge game world only 2 months after release, there’s really no end to it. Because those same people will feel bored again in no time.
The real problem, if you will see it this way, is the jump in power levels between the newly dinged lvl 80 and the one decked out in full Ascended gear.
(edited by Frotee.2634)
Very emotional, but obviously a minority opinion, as I doubt they would introduce this without a strong customer desire. To put it simply, adding in improvable armor is about the ONLY thing the game could do at this point to make my friends and I play again, and none of us have ever played WoW, period, for the record. They tried to please the “no grind” crowd, and it seems obvious that it’s not as big a crowd as they thought. I think they’re “narrowing” their choice of player base to, “as many as possible” based on feedback, sorry.
The thing is, I might even be fine with this (and quit MMOs altogether) – if we had any reliable statistic on how much of the GW2 playerbase really desires a gear treadmill. But we don’t – and as long as I hear more negative voices about this, I can’t quite believe that the majority is in favour of the carrot on a stick.
Dungeon grinders are also, what, 5% of the GW2 community?
People who want more gear-grinding because they “already have their legendary” are, what, 0.2% of the GW community?
I think both of these are outnumbered by the volume of folks who got their exotics and were actually happy to be done with stressing about stats. Some people want more content to strive for besides legendaries – not after legendaries. Not everyone wants to devote 1-2 months of nonstop grinding to get a weapon that lots of others will also have in a few months.
No one forces you to strive for legendaries, as they are – as of before Nov. 15 – just as “powerful” as any other exotic weapon. That is your perfonal choice! And there honestly is much more to do in the game…if you feel you’ve done everything you like, well, there are enough events and other content updates on the way – just chase your carrot elsewhere while you wait for them. No sub, remember? So you can easily play a carrot-on-a-stick MMO on the side.
I already mentioned it at some other instances – yes, I would much prefer an “Ascended” option without the stat increase, including only the infusion stuff which is only neccessary in deeper levels of this new dungeon…
And which, preferably, shouldn’t require grind to acquire.
Some sort of event-chain allowing you to “infuse” your existing gear might actually be quite nice
