…what with people going on about how they like endgame better than the way to get there:
I can not remember a single type of content that only becomes available at endgame (=lvl 80). Would someone enlighten me? Gaming philosophies aside, I just don’t get it.

As far as I’m aware explorer titles don’t count towards 100% world completion, they only count toward the regional explorer achievements. I have seen posts from people who have received their rewards for 100% completion but have still got explorer areas outstanding.

I can confirm this – also still working on my explorer titles, but have received my gift of exploration(s) for 100% world completion.

As far as I know, it was intended that some professions are harder to play well/ to master, yes
Also, some professions are just a tad better at PvP than PvE and vice versa…
But then, I know a couple of mesmer players who think their profession is pretty OP in PvE, too. Depends on your build and playstile I guess.

(I have to agree though that guardian feels like easy mode – although I find that one particularly boring to play…)

Jumping Puzzles - Suggestions?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Frotee.2634

Frotee.2634

One lame tip:
For long jumps, I hit my forward key before hitting space (jump) (→jumping out of movement), for short jumps, I hit space first (jumping out of standing still) – helps me not to overjump.
Also, for really long jumps: Walk/run just a liiiitttle bit over the edge before jumping off. You can usually still stand in midair right next to an edge Also, swiftness helps in those cases, when your landing plattform is large enough (I hate it for jumping puzzles otherwise, because I always misjump if I’m too fast).

Dyeing Clothes

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Frotee.2634

Frotee.2634

A great color to mix with just about anything, aside from white, is “illumination” – I often use it for fringes and other decorative parts of my armors.

Another thing I’m very careful with is how similar the colors I use are; for example, two shades of blue need to be the exact same “color” but a different “brightness” (a darker and a lighter tone of the exact same hue) – I hate having e.g. one slightly more greenish and one slightly more violet-ish blue close together for example

When you want to combine different colors, you might want to use ones which would have a significantly different “brightness” when printed black and white – it’s difficult to explain, but a dark violet and a light yellow go better together that e.g. a medium blue and a medium green, in my opinion.

Also: Complementary colors – those will really make each other shine! I never liked the combo red-green though…orange-blue and violet-yellow usually go well together though

Why do most of you prefer to play alone?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Frotee.2634

Frotee.2634

If you play with someone, you are not as free to do as you please, and – to a certain extend – feel pressured into doing things you might not be doing if going solo (like sticking around in an area you’d rather leave, or having to discuss where to go and what to do next). It’s a psychological thing I suppose, and it’s silly, really, but most of the time, I’d rather group up with people I know – I know how they play, we all know we’ll probably just stick together for a couple of events or so and then go our seperate ways unless someone is asking for help.
Edit: This doesn’t mean I always want to push on as quickly as possible – often the xact opposite. But I’d feel bad for it if grouped up with people who just want to finish things quickly, and that would kind of ruin the experience for me…

Instead of really grouping up with random people, I prefer to just stick around as long as I feel like it, chat a little, and excuse myself (or just leave) when I want to. I don’t have that much time to play, and I just don’t like to feel pressured into anything ^^° If I really want to do group content, I’ll just arrange something with my guildmates.

That doesn’t mean I won’t group up with someone asking for help – I really love to help people with their personal story, for instance. But I don’t like being invited into a group without any prompting beforehand – you know, actually communicating instead of pressing buttons.

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Frotee.2634

Frotee.2634

If you’re lonely wandering the world, you might want to see if you can’t get into a nice(er) guild. Also, I’m told that going into WvW for a while can net you quite a bit of exp – especially the events there.
And don’t forget that you can start doing dungeons from lvl 30 onwards, with a new dungeon opening up every 10 (5, if you count the explorable modes as new dungeons) levels.

Edit: The fastest way really is crafting, if you have the mats for it – that way, you could get to 80 in 2-4 hours I believe, if you didn’t need to farm mats (or money for mats) in between.

I’m really curious about your notions of good armor design now (not that I don’t have my pet peeves with the GwW2 armor design) – could you show us some examples of what you deem ‘good armor design’?

If want to see examples, search mod downloading sites for games that that have active modding communities. Here is the link to the Nexus site for Skyrim:
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/

You can access all the other Nexus sites through the nexus network menu.
Select ‘Categories’, and go the armour section.

Not saying everything listed in there is great, there is ugly stuff as well, but at least you have access to a vast variety for all sorts of tastes, with some being very well done. Remember, these are done by people who enjoy the games, and not game developers.

See, that’s why I was asking for specific examples of what you consider “good” armor design I was really just curious about your personal opinion, not what a bucnh of other people may or may not find good in other games.

I also haven’t done all the jumping puzzles yet, or done much dungeon content. I simply have so much left to do that I couldn’t get bored just yet. I still want account-wide dye selections back, btw. And I do change the colour of my armor quite regularly

Also, I don’t see the problem in ‘looking like a decked out lvl 80 from lvl 1’ – you can already do that, after all, what with Dungeon Tokens being Account bound, not Character bound. What matters is that you still have to earn that specific skin first – what toon you use it on later shouldn’t matter.

Why The Stat Cap Is So Important

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Frotee.2634

Frotee.2634

Though… I actually have an issue with games in that I need to feel like I’m always advancing toward something. Happens with console games, too. When I get near endgame, when I know there’ll be nothing to discover anymore, I get bored and… start over. I worry about what’ll happen when all my alts reach 80 – I’ll probably feel the need to ditch them and make new low level alts… rinse and repeat. /o\

Funny, I’m like that with console RPGs, too –
a) because most of the time, I really love the beginning of the journey, and its course, and would just rather do that again instead of fighting my way through the last dungeon and the last boss and
b), because I usually feel like I’ve missed oh-so-many sidequests which I should really catch up on…but that would be a lot of work, so I put it off for later and often end up not finishing the game for years (because come on, you can’t finish it if you haven’t done everything there is to do).

I’m weird that way

Anyway, @topic I still think I could grudgingly live with Ascended gear as it currently stands, as long as it is not the first step on the way to significant vertical gear progression. However, I just lack the trust in Anet to not take go down that road :/

I don’t get people hating on medium armor…i think GW2 has the BEST medium armor in any game I’ve ever played.

Then you need to play more games …

I could fill this thread with 100’s of images of various great styles and types of leather and/or medium armour from other games, many made by modders and not so called ‘professional’ designers.

The problem with MMO’s is that you are stuck in one persons vision of how the game should look. Single-player games with a good modding community can let you select the look and feel you want in the game.

Having to put up with someone’s very bad notions of armour design will be one of the main factors that drives me away from GW2 …

I agree that it’s beyond studpid that you have trouble covering up your female character if you choose a scholar profession, and trouble showing off skin when you choose an adventurer profession. Most of us choose professions based on our playing preferences, not based on how much skin we like our avatars to show in a game – a little more in-profession variety (especially in the beginning, I know there is towards the end) would be really nice.

I hate the starter armor for human, sylvari and norn female casters with an undying passion >_>

Also, no, highest tier gear in most MMO’s aren’t easily attainable, they require specific areas of content to get, typically impact pvp scenarios and push the trend to stat increasing to the limit. That may be where gw2 is at this very moment (in simply acquiring this new gear), but i trust it will go in the right direction

GW2 wasn’t meant to be “most MMOs”, it was meant to be different in (among others) that very aspect – read the manifesto if you will. What, now, is the right direction in your opinion?

My entire point was, it isn’t like other MMO’s and that as they progress in adding this new tier, along with new content, it will be attainable across multiple methods. If it was in the game at launch, it wouldn’t be an issue now. There is a lot of hindsight here, with the intro of this new tier, however i actually trust that it’s the end of it.

Ah, then I apparently misunderstood you – at least in part. I agree though that there probably wouldn’t have been as much of an outcry if we’d had Ascended gear from the get-go (although having higher stats on gear that is really hard to get is still against the manifesto).

I don’t have to really prove anything. The public has already done that this change came from pressure of not enough money generation. And very bad negative press only thing i’m doing is stating the obvious you can actually google. Bet you can’t google “Guild Wars 2 losing money because of no horizontal progression” But can you google “Guild Wars 2 losing money from no endgame vertical progression” The results from both 7 possible hits for the first. And 2100 possible hits for the second yea……I don’t have to argue anything to something that apparent.

Especially in this case, Google hits only prove how strongly discussed a topic is – not where the truth lies. And vertical progression in GW2 definitely has been a hot topic for more than a week now, no argument there. As long as we have no official answer on profit in GW2, this really is a moot point in any discussion.
(With the many complaints about bad RNG in mad king chests etc., I’d wager the cash flow wasn’t that bad, but that’s a personal guess.)

Also, I’d just like to point out that not too long ago, many people also wouldn’t believe that it was possible to have a successful MMO without monthly fees…
“Everyone” doing things a specific way doesn’t necessarily make this the only way or the right way – just the lazy way.

GW1 was considered the step child of mmo’s and actually was a cult game. Did you EVER ONCE hear “guild wars fiscal success” No right your dismissed now. And second life isn’t a mmorpg it’s a sim game totally different genre. No such thing as a mmorpg EVER that was horizontal and turned a profit. And they’re never will be period because if you can’t progress as you do in life. You won’t want to play something you can’t feel like a winner. You guys should give it up are talk to stock holders because that’s who really determine this.

If you hold 10 million shares in a company would you want them hanging onto a idea. That makes you lose any worth of that 10 million shares. Or do what makes you gain on that 10 million and what 75% of the player database wants. Not to mention all the magazines/media/websites that bashed gw2 for 2 months for not being vertical and abandoned it. You really think they going to even PAY attention to these post you guys are making lol…..Man again you guys are smoking that good stuff.

You argued that it wasn’t possible to keep “an audience” without vertical progression like we have in real life, hence it is perfectly valid to prove your argument wrong with a sim game
I haven’t looked at GW1 finances, so I can’t really argue about that point, but GW1 was obviously successful enough that NCsoft trusted ArenaNet with enough funds to make GW2.
Please don’t make assumptions about what I want to play, btw, as that is something you very obviously have absolutely no idea about.
Yes, trying something new is risky and difficult. However, we can never know wether it would be successful if we don’t try – and I don’t think Shareholders will be all that averse to ArenaNet turning a profit in a pretty much uncontested market segment (read: much more secure profit).

Also, just because the “majority” says “It’s like that” – doesn’t make it true, ESPECIALLY in the internet. Additionally, new players will most likely not replace us happy with the game for long, because they’ll just get bored again in no time if the tier upgrades don’t come soon enough…(keeping customers is always cheaper than winning new ones, if you didn’t know)
But it’s really now use arguing wth you, as you appear to have no well founded economical background when it comes to different business models and their success, so I’ll just go walk my dog and continue wasting my time on my thesis now…

Stat capped games only work for RTS based games. You cannot keep a audience with no way for them to progress. It works the same way in life is everyone capped at 100 dollars? No ofcourse not people need things to strive for. And reality check thats atleast 75% of the gaming population they want power and the means to earn it. If you really think a game is going to be successful with horizontal progression your in denial.

And what you really want is a console game not a online growing mmorpg. People really need to stop it with this subject its not going to work like that give it up. You really think a million plus people going to palette swap skins on gear for months after months. You must be smoking a new type of weed that makes dreams reality or something.

Look at GW1 – nuff said. It does work. And why should there not be a single MMO that offers an experience similar to VERY successful console RPGs but with the option of playing with millions of other people? And you really can’t compare a game to a real world working environment…also, in terms of stat-progression vs. skin-swapping: Ever heard of second life and the kind of money they used to make on “cosmetics”?

Innovation is the only long-term guarantee of success – merely copying your competitors or introducing easily copied changes will never give you a lasting advantage. Instead of talking down on people, you might want to study up on the basics of economics…

Also, you might want to consider that one of the selling points of GW2 was that players are not forced into specific activities to progress, and that dungeons – especially their explorable mode – were targeted at a specific group of players. Forcing “casuals” and other people who dislike dungeons into doing them? Very bad form. And please, PLEASE, stop turning us into people who want everything handed to them on a silver platter – because we aren’t. We just don’t wish to be put into a significant statistical disadvantage because we have a life outside of video games.

Look at it as an analogy to the PC market.

Apple ships about 10% of all PCs. However, last time I looked, their profits (from PCs, not iOS) dwarfs the combined profits of the PC devisions of HP, Dell, Lenovo. Why? 10% of a huge market is still enough to run a healthy business. Also, the 10% they shipped were the high-margin PCs. They never even attempted to ship a low-margin, cheap Mac.

ArenaNet could have had 100% of the stat-cap players of MMOs. Even if that are only 10% of all who play MMOs at the moment, that’s still more than enough players for a healthy business.

This is an important point – to my experience (or at least what we were taught at university ), companies targeting niche markets are often much more successfull (concerning ROI, profit and market share – although the last is rather obvious) than companies targeting a wide, highly competitive market segment. Many of them are highly international and highly successful, even if hardly anyone not working in that specific niche knows about them.

I was VERY annoyed about this, too – kudos for Gandara for going on a conquest spree and enabeling me to finally get my 100% I like my server ^^ (Although we get ‘owned’ quite often in WvW)

The thing is, I’d much rather have world completion without including the WvW worlds, maybe adding a specific achievement for that area? Because you are oh so dependent on your server’s success in WvW to get 100% in these areas…
