It was a limited time ‘sneak peek’ at things to come.

‘Breaking news! We’re releasing future items early for one day only! Through Friday, check the Gem Store each day this week for an exciting limited-time item! And don’t forget, our Lunar New Year items will only be on sale for a little while longer!’

So the wings (and anything else that comes up this week) will be back again.

Thank you for pointing that out, Shinjo.

I agree with you, Screenager. Rezzed sounds as if it would be a good first game show for players who haven’t been to one, with plenty to do for show veterans. This will be the first time I’ve been to that particular show, but I hear good things about it. PAX East will be much larger and busier. Both, I’m sure, will be a blast!

There are times when I sit, head in hands, wondering what fiendish mind thought of the access route for a particular vista. I look around the lunch room and think “Which of YOU did that to me!”

I seriously, passionately hope that we have vistas in Guild Wars: Heart of Thorns, because they are the best way to see the beauty of the world, and the talent of our artists and level designers.

I just sort of wish they have an “E Z Mode” for people like me.

Specialist Update

  • We’ve received reports from all of our Forum Specialists, and each report has been forwarded to the developers designated for a particular topic by Colin. In addition, Colin and Izzy (Isaiah Cartwright) will be receiving a copy of each and every report.
  • We’re grateful for the reports and for the depth of detail they provide. We’re very happy that the specialists have volunteered their time to put these together and we believe the information will be very helpful.
  • I sent over a template this week so that the specialists have a consistent framework on which to place their input. The specialists think this system will be very workable and the devs will benefit from the efficiency offered by a standard presentation, although naturally each report will be unique.
  • We’re still seeking specialists for a few professions. Please consider helping out. As the existing specialists will tell you, we don’t place demands on your time or set unrealistic goals.
  • Our specialists were chosen because we feel that they are balanced in their thinking, and that they are keenly aware that they represent a broad cross-section of players. I haven’t seen anything that looks alarming from a “my way or the highway” point of view, Forgotten Legend, and I trust that we’ll see a wide view of a particularly subject (majority and minority opinions, when possible) rather than someone’s individual agenda. That precisely what we’ve gotten so far and this is the ideal of the program.

Update on the program:

  • You folks make a good point, and sure, we’d consider additional specialists if there’s an area that could benefit from double coverage.
  • We are still seeking to choose a specialist for each profession. So far we have great candidates for some professions, but not all. If you’re an expert on elementalists, a wiz at warriors, a guru at guardians, a… — well, you follow my drift — please get in touch!

Are those three professions the only ones lacking? Or did those three just have convenient alliterations?

Sorry for any confusion: Those three just had fun alliterations. We’d welcome applications for any profession and will weigh them against those we’ve already received. Thanks for asking!

First, in these forums we would like the term “CDI” to be applied only to topics started and run by a developer. Discussing the topic is great! We just ask that it take place with a different name, to avoid confusion.

I think there may come a time when Chris or another dev revisits the topic of Dungeons and Fractals, whether that’s by starting a new CDI or reopening the old one. I cannot speak for the devs on this subject, but I feel I can say that right now they would not be able to engage on this subject, although I know it’s definitely on their radar.

Bahahaha! I’m not sure if that’s a typo, but it’s still pretty accurate. ;P

On topic: I’m personally not a fan of invisible bags since I’m almost OCD about what I’m selling to a vendor, but for most people, it can be incredibly useful.

Yes, as explained, an Invisible Bag is really useful for tucking in those things you want to carry, as opposed to store, but want to ensure you don’t sell in error. I have regular bags for everything except the final slot, and there I put an Invisible Bag. It protects the four of five tasty bows I’m still deliberating about saving or selling, along with Black Lion Chests, Treat or Treat bags, keys, etc. In the latter cases, the stacks are something that may grow if I get another ToT bag or BLC, so it’s handy to have them all gathered in the protected Invisible Bag.

Well, with the variables of time zones, “today” may or may not apply. This is because, as was mentioned in a thread a few months ago, players in some zones note that our “today” — and it’s barely past mid-day for us here in the Pacific time zone — is actually “tomorrow” for some. Or, in the case of our Aussia and Kiwi players, it’s actually next week!

There is a build planned today (our time, anyway) and we’re hearing it should be live in the next few hours.

Thanks for your patience!

I think you’re missing out on a good deal of your audience by not bringing any Anet representation to Australia/Oceania. I also think Anet underestimates its market here; I see more than just a few of us online daily. I’ve seen entire maps of Aussies/NZ’s.

Sounds like fun, Argon. Hope to see you there.

Me and 2 others have got tickets to go to Rezzed.

Just out of curiosity, will there be a bit where we can ask questions to the devs? if so, are we allowed to know which devs will be present? I would quite like to prepare a list of questions to grill them with.

You know, I’m not sure exactly which devs are going to be present although if that information is made available I can post here later. I do know that some members of the Dev Team will be involved with press interviews; others will be involved in demos. Some (like me) have other responsibilities.

I’d say that it would be fine to ask a question or two. But please keep in mind that the main intention of our being at the show is to share our expansion: Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns with existing and new players, and devs will be hosting multiple demo stations. So “grilling” devs with a flurry of questions isn’t really appropriate. (I know you’re kidding about the “grill” part, but just sayin’. )

TL;dr: Asking a question or two is fine. Trying to conduct a full-on interview isn’t really workable. Thanks for understanding!

I’m happy to post what I know, but some is reiteration:

  • A dev checked the drop rate and the item did drop and continues to drop at the anticipated rate. Actually, he said it was dropping a little more generously than anticipated, but at no time was it dropping a less than the planned rate.
  • The Candy Corn recipe was created simply to give someone with two Gwynefrydds the option to make something from the second, since they are bound to an account and therefore cannot be sold, given, traded, etc. Sure, I agree, it’s not a recipe I’d take advantage of, personally, but was, again, offered as an option if someone were inclined to use it.
  • We don’t know (or at least I believe no one yet knows) future plans for this festive pooch. You can be assured that the devs have seen your feedback about this rare item but Wintersday is a long way away and there are other things closer on the horizon.

leman, I feel sure you’ll find that the concern you’ve expressed has been and will continue to be a focus of the entire dev team during the process of development, testing, polish, beta testing, balance, more polish, and so forth. The last thing an expansion pack would be intended to do is to put one profession at the top of the pyramid, where all others are “inferior” in some sense.

I have every confidence that all the other professions will do just fine playing in with, and against, a Revenant.

JT says it’s my turn. Ok, maybe…

  • My first name is a derivation of the Welsh “Gail.” Welsh forms part of my heritage, along with English, Scottish, French, and German. Is it any wonder nearly all my vacations involve one or more of those countries?
  • I have visited 37 U.S. states, 17 countries, 3 continents. Travel is a major love of my life.
  • I am a voracious reader, everything from science fiction to history to mysteries.
  • My musical taste covers classical, classic rock, some alternative, and movie scores.
  • Favorite movie: The Wizard of Oz. (And a gazillion others, but I can’t get away from loving that film most of all.)
  • Pretty much my entire house is decorated in a Disney theme. Serious Disney art, whimsical figurines, pins, the whole lot. I have an entire bedroom dedicated to my favorite Disney film, Sleeping Beauty. (My husband is a very understanding man to put with with my bizarre ideas of home decor. Of course, we do display Broncos and LA Kings pennants, too. )
  • Favorite artist: Beatrix Potter. She was an amazing woman with incredible talent.
  • I’m female.
  • I’m 108 years old. (What? You know women are allowed to lie about their age, right? )
  • First game: The Black Cauldron (1986). Loved traditional adventure games back in the day: King’s Quest, Space Quest, Hero’s Quest (aka Quest for Glory).
  • First on-line game: Diablo.
  • Was a Top 20 Beta Tester for StarCraft. And that sorta started it all, I think.
  • I was one of three people invited to Blizzard North to alpha test Diablo II. Blizzard named a NPC in Diablo II after me. (Gaile is a rogue mercenary, and how fitting that is!)
  • I’ve been in the games industry for nearly 20 years, as a writer, journalist (e.g., I wrote the first published review of StarCraft), fansite writer/administrator, community manager, support liaison, now forum communications team lead which covers more than just forums…
  • I never applied for a job at ArenaNet but somehow I’ve been with the company for 14 very, very happy years.

Charr Footprints are Backwards?!?!?!

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Gaile Gray

Previous

Gaile Gray

ArenaNet Communications Manager

Next

I have a little information on this: Footprints are determined by the geometry of leg joints. That is, the direction of a footprint is determined by the joints of a particular creature’s legs and ankles. For all the races except Charr, those bones bend in the same direction of that of a human, they each have the same “ankle roll.” But if you look at images of the Charr, the ankle roll is different. And it’s the way the leg is configured that results in the footprints being backwards for the Charr. Or, as an artist said, “Once the Ankle goes over the ball of the foot, as it does with the Charr, the footprints get reversed because the (game) engine thinks the foot is pointing the opposite direction.”

Making an adjustment requires the involvement of the Gameplay Programming Team. From what I understand, making this change could require a significant amount of time but I’ll see what we can find out about this.

It sounds as if you have read the Content Terms of Use, but if you’ll take a look at that again and observe the parameters outlined within it, you should be fine.

I note you’re not suggesting a profit in any form, nor are you marketing this as official or approved. At its core it sounds as if this is a fan project that you’re sharing in case others desire to also make themselves a copy for personal, non-profit use.

I will ask our Brand Director to see if he has any other information to share but again, the CToU should be very helpful.

The Walk of Shame

I don’t consider it a walk of shame. I mean, death happens. I have found, though, that if I’m trying to res someone and they suddenly disappear to use the WP, it can be a little disappointing. You know, we were nearly there and poof!

Too, if someone is trying to res me, I feel it can be unmannerly to just up and leave… even though occasionally I do so because I can see they’re risking too much to help out and I want to make sure they don’t incur death because of me. With no repair fees, it’s a little different now and the guilt isn’t quite as high. Still, seeing the ground littered with people who tried to help out is a wee bit embarrassing.

For me, “to WP or not to WP” it has next to nothing to do with the loot or the rewards or the daily points. It just has to do with how it feels at any given time, what’s right for my situation, what’s right for the group and the overall objective.

I just make it a point to declare that during Tequatl, Silverwastes, etc. People should not be ressing the fulling dead and that the dead should WP and get back.

And that makes infinite sense to me.
