Charr engineer armor

I don’t know man, my Char engi looks pretty sick.

Dungeon head, gloves, boots with order of whispers shoulder and chest. Advanced spinal blades backpiece and Legion rifle.

Although I don’t use any of it, I think the Char medium T2 armor looks pretty good with the T1 helm. But yeah, the char medium T3 looks more like it was made for a ranger.

Celestial vs Berserker

There is no one set that is going to be awesome at everything. Celestial is good for WvW, but pretty bad for dungeons since a good portion of your dammage as a celestial engi is going to be from conditions, and condition dammage in dungeons is pretty sub-par. My advice would be to make zerker ascended gear so you can do fractals, but make you weapon first because it makes the biggest difference. In my opinion, Knight armor with zerker rifle and celestial rings, backpiece, and trinkets is best for WvW roaming and zergs. Or, rabid armor with dire pistol/shield and trinkets, backpiece, and rings is best for pure condition dammage in WvW.

It really comes down to how you want to play your engineer in WvW: power or condition dammage, or a blend of both. But, once again, there is no build or armor set for engis that is going to be awesome for everything in the game, you will need more than one armor set.

Rytlock, the new Khan-Ur

Calling it now, I think he is gonna be named as the new Khan-Ur in HoT.

Based on his actions and dialog in the announcement trailer, he seems to have the Legions united against the Sylvari, something only a Khan-Ur could do. And, right now if you stand around in the black citadel you will hear Charr talking about a need for a new Khan-Ur, so the desire is there and Rytlock is arguably one of the best candidates for it. He also certainly has the tenacity and desire for such an role. What do you guys think?

Every time I equip a kit on my Engineer, my awesome Advanced Spinal blades back piece that I worked really hard to get, gets turned into an ugly backpack with rags and other junk dangling off of it. It’s very reminiscent of a hobo’s backpack, and really goes badly with my armor set.

Been following this thread since launch, coming back for Heart of Thorns because the trailer showed a hammer engi with no sack – praying the specialization removes the need for kits as the only viable build!

…..That Engi didn’t have the hobosack on it’s back because it was using the hammer. …..

Take out your weapon (rifle, pistol/pistol, pistol/shield) and you won’t have a hobosack on your back either. The hobosack only appears when we have a kit equipped. Hammer is not a kit.

So, I just started playing a thief, and I am trying to learn how to play it. It seems like a lot of thieves somehow move about the map in perma-stealth. How is this possible? Other thieves always come out of stealth even when I am out in the middle of nowhere with no place they could have been hiding in, and get the drop on me.

I mostly use them against thieves as a sort of denial system: it often forces them to try and fight me at range, where I can easily kill them with grenades, or causes them to risk it and try to attack me anyways where I can get them in my fire field and pop lots of burning stacks on ‘em. I’ve also noticed that a lot of warriors simply ignore my bombs thinking they can soak up the damage, much to their dismay, or they take out their bow and try to kill me at range, at which point I use my smoke bomb and then kill them with grenades.

Thank you all very much for your advice. I’m going to try the runes of battle, and see if I like it better.

Which kit do you all think is better to bring for stacking might: the bomb kit or the Flamethrower? I like the bomb kit because it comes with another blast finisher, and the fire field only has an 8 seccond cooldown. But the flamethrower’s fire field lasts longer, which makes it easier for the group to blast it.

the problem is the very small engineer population. you can ignore the loss you make by engineers not buying gemstore stuff if you can f.e. sell tons of stuff to warriors and guardians which are simply much more. would you invest in satisfying 5 people instead of 50?
there are simply not enough engineers for anet to care.

I really don’t think the engineer population is as small as people seem to think it is. I see fellow engineers everywhere, on all servers. I think that they simply don’t have as big of a financial impact, because they don’t see the point in paying money for cosmetics and gems, because no matter what they do, it will clash with their hobo-sacks, and thus be a waste of money.

In short, it seems like the engineer population is small to A-net, because they don’t spend as much money as the warrior and guardian population. Just my two cents, I could be wrong.

Possible Engi weapons (JFF)

I would like to see a kit that lets you take control of a remote control golem of some kind. Your camera would follow the golem instead of your character, and you could run around bashing people as a giant golem, and shooting rockets and stuff. To balance it, your character would stay planted while controlling the golem, and it’s range from your character would only be about 1200 distance, or so; if you go to far away from where you planted your character, the golem would disappear and you would go back to controlling your character with a 20 second, or so, cool-down on the golem, you would get the same cooldown on the golem if it is killed. So long as you don’t go too far from your character with the golem, you can equip or un-equip the golem without any significant cool-down, just like any kit.

I really like it, and I feel very useful in dungeons. But I am always looking to improve myself, so i was wondering if you guys could give me any advice you think might be useful.

I pretty much always run bomb kit and grenade kit, and put down fire fields for might as much as possible. I swap out the elixir gun for whatever feels more useful, depending on the situation. Other than that, I mostly use grenades, and I am sure to keep all my conditions up all the time, I swap to pistol/shield only to apply confusion when it’s up, or to use my reflect when necessary. My only real difficulty, is when the group want’s to stack for certain bosses, most of my survive-ability is my dodging, which is sometimes difficult when stacking because of AOE fields.

Just can talk about PvE engi, he was my 2nd lv80 and now that I have all the classes played at lv80 for quite a long time (except guard unfortunately) and I can say that the engi is pretty underrated. He has the same AoE damage as an ele, however it takes more efforts to do so, and he feels like the hardest class to play effective. Just to share 18 stacks of might takes an ApM burst, however the result is beautiful. He has probably the best overall skillset, with perma might stacks like a guard, reflection like a guard / mesmer, long time stealth like a thief and healing / cleansing like a mes or guard. I love this class, totally allrounder. The only thing he lacks is at single target dps, however he still is able to keep up the 25 stacks vulnerability on bossfights wich grants the team a huge damage boost on his account.

I just had to point out, that our reflect isn’t even close to as good as the Mesmer or the guard. Ours only covers ourselves, we cant use any other abilities while reflecting, or move. Guards and Mesmers can do all that, all while covering the whole group with their reflects. Plus, the engi reflect has pretty close to the same cooldown as theirs. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a good ability, and I use it all the time to great effect, but it’s still not as good as the guardian or Mesmer reflects.

Alchemy / Invention Grandmaster traits

The only real problem with the new turret traits that I have, is:
1) You have to sacrifice traiting into other lines, so your DPS is going to drop significantly. Making them not really viable for Dungeons.
2) none of the traits do anything to make turrets more resilient to AOE or mele damage. So they still are likely to be obliterated immediately when they are dropped.

Saying that this changes nothing with turrets, wouldn’t be correct, but it doesn’t change them enough to make them a viable choice over other kits, or to justify sacrificing all that damage.

That’s it, most people view warrior as the best dps class when it isn’t at all, it’s just easier to play and more forgiving due to their HP pool and armor. Engineer is worth a slot in any dungeon team just because of the perma 25 vuln.

I agree, to an extent. No other class can even come close to the warrior’s burst damage ability, and that makes them the most powerful and effective class for dungeons. So if you have a dungeon group with no warriors or engi’s in it, and you need to fill one more spot: so long as things are the way they are now, you will be better off bringing the warrior. However, if you already have a warrior or two in your group, having a pure damage engi along will increase the groups damage quite well.

Engi’s aren’t useless in dungeons, its just that most classes can do the things that make us useful in dungeons, just a bit better. Warriors do more damage, and do it faster. Both warriors and guardians can put out powerful group buffs more often. Ele’s can put out more frequent combo fields. Ele’s, Mesmers, and guardians can all reflect projectiles more effectively.

Engi’s do all those things, making us useful in a dungeon, but we just cant do them nearly as effectively as the classes I just mentioned, making us not AS useful. An engi is basically a “jack of all trades, master of none.” And with the way dungeons are right now, groups need masters, not jacks.

Whoever told you this is off their rocker. Check out the PvE Metariffic Engineer thread made by Phineas Poe. That is the best build for damage in PvE right now, and it doesn’t use Flamethrower. Flamethrower is not a great (or even good) kit right now.

Whatever you are smoking, I want some. Engi’s are one of the best PvP classes in the game. Have you gone against a decap engi? Even a condi engi is absolutely amazing, and difficult for anyone to counter.

I think the whole “what other people think” thing gets blown way out of proportion sometimes. I’ve never been kicked out of a group, and being an Engi has never been an issue. If that were the “general consensus” as you say it is, wouldn’t most of us have experienced that? I only see the odd post once in awhile alluding to this mystical place where Engineers aren’t welcome. In fact many times I’ve heard “thank goodness we have a good Engi here” when I revive people quickly with Toss R, nearly full heal my group with blasts in water fields, stealth everyone, or gives us all tons of might. Sure, Eles can blast their own water fields, Thieves stack stealth, Warriors revive better… but we’re 1 profession and that’s 3 just to match what we routinely bring to dungeons (without even building for support, as those professions wouldn’t either).

I apologize, I misunderstood you. Also, I misspoke; I did not mean to imply that engi’s are bad at PvP, as I stated in my latter post, I think they are amazing at PvP. But even as amazing as they are, Necros are still leagues ahead of us.

I’m trying to be optimistic, but to be honest, our new grandmaster traits are pretty lackluster, especially when compared to other class’s traits. I don’t think anyone is going to sacrifice all that DPS to go 30 into alchemy, and stop using better kits like flamthrower or grenades, just to get some reflects, which are still no where near as good as Mesmer or Guardian reflects.

All in all, none of the new traits or changes have helped the plight of the engineer: we will still be shunned from dungeons, and restricted to PvP and WvW, and even in those fields we will not be anywhere near as good as other classes, due to their new traits and buffs.

Better kits like Flamethrower? Shunned from dungeons? Restricted to PvP where we’re not even that good anyways?? What Engineer have you been playing O_O. The Flamethrower is not a good kit compared to explosives (could be why you are shunned from dungeons?) and Engineers are very good across all game modes including PvE.

Seems like we go through this every major update. The sky is not falling, and Engineers are fine. Even the worst nerf in Engineer history (Kit Refinement) didn’t ruin us.

Thank you everyone for the advice, it has given me a lot to think about. I swapped out my bomb kit for elixir gun, and Blood injection for invigorating speed, both of which seems to have help quite a bit. I will try a few more of the suggestions you all have made, and I am still open to any other advice you have.

I need some SPvP advice

Hello,
I play an Engi as my main in PVE, and I recently took an interest in SPvP. I am having a lot of fun, and I can take down Warriors, Guardians, and Ele’s 9 times out of ten, no real problem. But when I go against Necros, Condi Hunters, and thieves, I seem to be having a lot of trouble.
I am not too concerned with necros, they kindo counter everyone right now. But I would like some advice on how I should fight the Hunters and thieves.

It’s a condi build. I mainly use Grenades, but I try to pop in and throw down the #2 and #3 with my bombs when I can, as well as the #2 and #3 on the toolkit. I try to keep my opponent knocked down as much as possible with the #4 shield skill, and my Big ‘ol Bomb.
I do have a lot of trouble with condition removal. I tried to use the med-kit for the #4 skill, but it’s a bit clumsy, and sometimes seems as if it actually doesn’t work at all.

Any advice is appreciated.

I understand theres QQ and hate spewing left and right on these pvp forums, but its warranted.

People want to see it improve and so far what have we gotten?
after 1.5 years, everything is being tossed aside and starting from scratch… it should not have taken that long to figure out what a terrible state pvp was in.

GW2 pvp has taken a major step back from the GW1 pvp that players thought they were going to get… now we are at a state where we have no clue whats about to happen to pvp and its going to be at least 2 months before we see anything drastic change and in the mean time what do we get as a place holder? a few coins, some mats/greens from rank up chests.
That’s just embarassing.

The priorities on pvp are by far the lowest imo..that needs to change

well im enter the forum to see if there is some good discussion. but constant qq, some hide behind normal topics, are 80% of the first page always. and no, qq are not discussions.

i think the player or the community is embarassing, not anet. they told us the plan. embarassing is that constant qq about always the same. acting like a little kid, screaming and kicking, until it gets what it want, ignoring that the wanted was maybe already on the way or something better was prepared.

the community always doesnt know what the next patch will bring and when it comes. thats the history of gw2-pvp balancing. to act like a kid now is confusing.

the solution is so easy if u really think gw2 is in a state u cant tolerate anymore – stop playing. if u think u can still play, then play it and stop that constant qq. the constant qq will nothing change. all it does is to suck attention away from better topics.

It somehow feels like the reaction by Anet to the complaints about a half-empty glass is to just take away the glass with the promise that the glass will be full again someday.
Yet we’re not told when we will get a full glass and what will be in it.

Whilst I tend to defend the actions taken by Anet as I do know that making a game – especially a MMO – is very complex and I am aware that we only see the results of it from the (convenient) customer point of view, I have to say that specifically for the pvp changes, the communication from Anet seems chaotic at best.

Look at all the people feeling morally superior saying “Play for fun!” or “You shouldn’t want a reward!” or “Look at xyz game” (usually mobas).

What they don’t realize is that GW2 is an MMO which from the time the genre was created has come to be almost synonymous with one thing – PROGRESSION. And not progression of skills, but progression of characters. Better skills, cooler weapons or armor, just getting richer, titles etc.

Saying “Play for fun” is not enough because for most people, getting rewards is the fun part! Otherwise you’re just wasting time because you put in all that effort for nothing.

The only reason I PvP is because I liked the rank system allowing me to get higher and higher ranks that were difficult to achieve. Progression. Improvement of characters. That is the motivation for playing.

People need to get off their high horse and realize that they can play for “pure fun” if they want. No one is stopping them. The rest of us need a nice juicy fat carrot to put in the effort.

u know what? its all still there. u get richer (no gold sink), rank is increasing, titles. they just remove 1 tiny currency what some never used ( just watch the other threads ) and that was used to buy armor. so either u have followed the advice and bought your armor before the removal or u wait some weeks.

im not defending anet. but u all act like that was new behaviour.

The removal of the chest was new, and they didn’t up the amount of gold you get, like they said they would. So right now there is no means of getting new armor in SPvP, and you get vastly more gold from doing PvE. So, there isn’t really any reason to even do SPvP for several weeks. Or however long it takes them to implement all the SPvP changes, which they haven’t said.

The reward IS the GOLD. Once they merge pvp armor with pve armor, it’s ALL buyable/craftable with relationship to GOLD.

That thing you can make 10 times faster in pve?

That an adjustment ANET has to make to increase the reward for it to attract more players to PvP and play to win! Once GOLD is involved, people start trying harder. Because GOLD can get MORE than just PvP rewards.

That’s all fine and dandy, but they didn’t up the amount of gold you get when they removed glory. So the point of this thread still stands. If you want to make gold, for the next two weeks, doing dungeons and other PVE content makes far more sense, it is really pointless to do SPvP for the next few weeks.

I have a suggestion.
One of the major reasons they implemented the hobosack in the first place, was to give a visual que as to what kit the engi is using to other players, however, this doesn’t really work as advertised, especially in SPvP and WvWvW. The visual details between the different hobosacks for the various kits, are very small, and impossible to see by other players who usually have their cameras zoomed out all the way, and are moving too fast to tell the difference between a bomb kit, grenade kit, or a toolkit, at least until the engi starts using attacks. The only two kits which can be easily discerned from the others, are the elixer gun, and flamethrower.

So, why not do away with the bobosack all together, and make all the kits place something the engi’s hand, like the elixir-gun and flame-thrower do? Like a grenade launcher for the grenade kit, a couple big bombs in the engi’s hands for the bomb kit, and a big, easily seen wrench for the toolkit.

This solution fixes two problems: it gets rid of the unsightly hobosacks, and makes it easier for other players to know what kits the engineer is using. I really see no cons in it, what do you guys think?

The cruel Irony of all this, is that they finally came out with a back piece that fits the look one would expect to see on an engineer: the spinal blades, but, it still disappears/sticks out awkwardly from my hobosack when I equip a kit.

Also, in a non-related issue: I am still waiting for some armor that looks like engineer armor instead of thief armor, that I don’t have to buy with gems.

With my recent acquisition of the new spinal blades back item, I have been once again reminded of an issue that I very much wish that A-net would address. Please A-Net, make it so back pieces that have visual skins will not be replaced by the backpack that appears when I use a kit, such as flamethrower or bomb kit. While I like those visuals when I don’t have a back item with any visual skin: I acquired the spinal blades to be seen all the time, and not just when I am out of combat, or using my rifle/pistols (which i rarely use.)

The announcement article is pretty vague on this, and I haven’t been able to find any posts about this on the forum. So, does anyone one know what is replacing glory? Or is spvp going to have literally no rewards now?
