I made the exact same points a few weeks ago as you are Strategist, and the people of this sub-forum were none too happy about them. They think that just because you believe RF needs to be changed, that you are a terrible player and need to “L2P.” That being said, I agree with you.

Oh please. All you lot would do is stack in corner and say the content was too easy.

You’ve never done a fractal, have you?

That is the baseline that I am asking they use to make raids, not dungeons. Fractals require communication and coordination, and have mildly challenging mechanics that require a lot more than just stacking in the corner most of the time. I want that but with 10-25 people, instead of just 5.

I don’t know how many times, or how many ways I can say this: Tequatl, 3 headed jungle worm, the marionette, these Are not Raids. They are open world content. I don’t see how you could believe they are raids. They aren’t instanced, so any one can come or go from the event as they please and it own’t really effect the outcome. They are not very challenging and require little or no group cohesion, communication, or organisation, because they have to be like that since they are open world content. If open world content was as challenging as a raid, it would never be completed; you can’t organize an entire server of random people who aren’t in a group and don’t know who you are, nor is it fun to try.

Raids are basically dungeons, they are instanced content, but require a larger group to accomplish than 5 people, usually between 10 and 25, and are thus much more challenging than dungeons and a greater social experience. They allow a guild as a whole to feel more accomplished, rather than just 5 people in the guild at a time.

Just an FYI for you, it does not have to be instanced to be a raid. There have been a few games that have done open world raids. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes it was done right, sometimes it wasn’t but that’s true for everything.

Second the events you mentioned actually do require a level or organization. Believe it or not you can’t just have everyone on the map run up to teq and spam the 1 key. You actually need defense groups in certain locations and during the battery phase you need people that will fight the bulk mobs and the special mobs (grub holes, fingers, and the fatties). In fact the teq fight is pretty similar to how some raid bosses operate, so it’s not unfair for some people to consider them raids.

Just wanted to clarify some misunderstandings you seem to have.

I get the feeling that you have never done an actual raid. The level of “organisation” that Teq requires is nothing compared to a good raid. And even if it does, it still allows people to simply walk in, spam 1, and get credit. That’s not a raid. And despite some games calling open world content a raid, that isn’t a raid, it’s open world content.

But this is all beside the point. What I, and others, are asking for is instanced raids. Not guild puzzles, not claiming our Guild Hall, not WvW, not open world boss fights, even ones with complex mechanics. We want instanced, large group fights with bosses, fight mechanics, and a group number cap of 10-25 people.

It will look cool, it will (probably) play cool, and it will fill a gap in thief abilities that we currently are in dire need of being filled (we have no ranged weapon beyond 900 range.)

I honestly think all the people asking for offhand sword and other such other melee weapons are just plain silly. Thieves are already one of the best (if not the best) melee class. We need a weapon with more ranged more than we need another melee weapon.

They won’t add harder content because new/casual players would have hard time clear it / or join any party/raid because 90% of the people wants exped only already to every path. So Anet will make dungeons that is possible to clear with all beginners that have mediocre skills.

I don’t see why they couldn’t give the raids a selection of difficulty ratings that could be voted on by the group. Normal and…Veteran? Hardcore? Elite? Whatever they wanted to call it, but I don’t see any reason in having more than two difficulties. (IF they made the harder rating actually hard.)

I know GW2 isn’t like other MMOs, but raid content is a great way for Guilds to interact with each other and build on their own abilities and skill.

(I want to add that I realize the likelihood of raids being implemented any time soon is extremely low, but there’s no reason not to discuss it.)

Fractals are perfect for this kind of thing. They scale in difficulty, and require lots of coordination and have some mildly complex mechanics. All they would need to do is make fractals that require 10 or more players, with a maximum of 25.

Very interesting, hopefully you’re correct.

Personally I saw ~10 players running into a huge fractal like portal with the subtext “Adventure together” and my eyes lit up as I was sure this would be their implementation of guild raids. Then my head hit the desk as I realized that it’s just a glorified waypoint system for guild missions.

That is the exact same reaction I had. When I saw that, I literally did the Chris Pratt excited face. Then this week when I read about what it really is, I was heartbroken.

Ok, given the dev response in the other thread about Mortar kit, I am much happier about mortar kit. The #1 attack does 47% more damage than rifle auto-attack. Add to the fact that it’s a projectile finisher and that makes this a very good kit. I still would rather see one more power based attack other than the F5 skill, but it’s still very good.

According to napkin math, mortar #1 hits about 47% harder than rifle 1. The rest of the mortar skills do less damage but have more utility.

"Rifle Mod" and "Deadly Mixture"?

in Engineer

Gern.2978

err, no.
rifled barrels was (and currently still is) the range increase to 1.2k for rifle and 1.05k for pistol
Hair-trigger was (and currently still is) the cd-reduction trait for both rifle and pistol for 20%.
and rifle mod was the plain 10% dmg increase.

to repeat myself clearly:
“skilled marksman” == “rifle mod” + “hair trigger”
but instead of flat 10% more dmg that we’re used from rifle mod, we now get a 10% faster animation for all skills, which means faster executions of all our rifle-skills and a flat 10% dmg-increase to the AA.
pistol does not profit frm this, but got coated bullets and rifled barrels as baseline. also the pistol aa is considered an explosion once the patch hits. that’s a confirmed fact.

If that is what they are thinking, I don’t like it. I don’t feel that a buff to rifle speed is a good enough compensation for the loss in damage.

Yeah, orbital strike is cool, but it has a 40 second cooldown, and it really is the only skill that looks that great. From Dulfy:

“1) Mortar Shot: Launch an explosive round from your mokittenamaging foes in the target area.
2) Poison Gas Shell: Launch a mortar round that spreads poisonous gas in an area.
3) Flash Shell: Launch a phosphorous mortar round that burns brightly at impact point.
4) Endothermic Shell: Launch a mortar round that chills foes in the target area.
5) Elixir Shell: Launch a mortar round that heals allies in the target area.
F5) Orbital Strike: Call down energy from the sky to blast an area.”

I saw pictures before that showed the damage of these abilities, and they weren’t very good (Dulfy took them down for some reason). Orbital Strike is only 900 baseline. Maybe it’s just me, but it looks like I’ll be continuing to use crate, and cry a little inside at my loss of significant range. Not that grenades were ever really useful over 900 range anyways, because they were too slow. But there were a few occasions when that range came in handy. I thought that mortar would fill that niche, but I don’t think it will.

In What Way Is HoT Adding "Progression"?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Gern.2978

Gern.2978

For people comparing mastery with reputation: No, its not the same.

Masterys are real Progression towards a specific content (Not just to give shiny skills rep-related).

I.E. – Gliding provide progression in how you use your glider, allowing you to use it for a longer time, or letting you use air to lift yourself higher.

Precursor Mastery provide a way to progress towards your legendary trough playing different ascpects of the world, and adventure trough it.

Lore Nuhoch/Itzel : Those, are the close of rep system yu are talking about, since those are really reputation masterys. But still, it gives you acesss to different map mechanics, allow you to socialize with the tribes and of course, gives you acess to unique skills/mechanics.

It is, the most well made horizontal progression I’ve seen. DIfferent from Reputation, where you farm mobs to specific raise your rep rank within a people to just gain acess to some buffs/skills, masterys provide you a focus to progress towards specific content, not even related to skills or buffs most of time.

It is, the response for progression within HoT, I personally liked it.

All thief weapon skills are spammable. The only limiting factor is your initiative. And with Infiltrator’s signet, you regen most of your initiative from “Pistol Whip” by the time you are finished channeling it.

As far as gaining group stealth with S/P: You put down “Black Powder” and then you and your group blasts it for group stealth.

Where did this come from?

in Thief

Posted by: Gern.2978

Gern.2978

So I just got out of a dungeon run where the guardian in the group started flaming me for running the Sword/Pistol meta build. He was under the impression that sword/pistol did completely worthless damage and that I should be using dagger/dagger.

Now I am fully aware of the advantages and disadvantages of both builds, something which causes me to use sword/pistol more often than dagger/dagger. What I am wondering is: where did his misunderstanding come from? Is this something that a lot of people actually believe?

Just to clarify for people who may not understand thieves: Sword Pistol is a perfectly viable alternative to dagger/dagger, as is stated here:
http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Thief_-_D/D_S/P_Shortbow

Yes, under ideal conditions you will do more damage with dagger/dagger. I use sword/pistol more often because it has more survivability (all your dammage means diddly-poop if you spend more time in the downed state than hitting the boss), more cleave, consistent and readily available smoke fields to increase group survivability or stealth without wasting Shadow refuge, and still does a lot of damage. My pistol whip hits for 15-20k damage every time, and I am able to spam in non-stop during a fight. Not to mention, there are a lot of boss fights where it is simply not advisable or possible to get consistent back-stabs throughout the fight, subject Alpha for example.

In short, sword/pistol just has more utility than dagger/dagger, which I find far more useful in a dungeon group than just high-damage. Especially pug groups.

Please people, don’t criticize people for using a build if you haven’t done your homework on that build.

I agree that sPvP just isn’t very fun especially if you don’t have a team to roll with.

Matchups are all over the place with kids generally thinking there the kitten for facerolling a 4v5 or sometimes even 3v5 plus games in general seems to be getting more full of trolls and people without a clue how to play.

In the past day I have seen facerolls both ways, with just one close game between them and every game has been multiples of the same class on each team, usually 2+ rangers, necros or mesmers and then usually one warrior or guardian. I’ve personally seen just one engi and one thief all day (unranked queues)

I just feel sPvP comes down to who has the more effective zerg rather than skill now since most players seem to forget about the points altogether and fight nowhere near points and play CoD mode.

Courtyard (or CoDyard as I call it) is also going up in map selection lately which is a shame because personally I think its the worst map of them all simply because its a CoD players wet dream, players 10 metres apart with no objectives outside of killing other players until the unbalanced matchmaking system finally allows one team or the other to spawn camp players as they drop down. God I hate that map….

It would be nice to see some smaller game modes such as 3v3 to try balance the system slightly better but the reality is between bad players and good players theres such a large gap in skill that it makes things really hard to balance regardless of the system.

For example a couple of days ago I was 1v1 a friend from my guild both of us playing ele, I generally don’t play ele much but its something I am trying to pick up whereas he has been playing d/d for a long time. Even on a full zerk build I couldn’t even damage the guy, I tried again using celestial but all that did was increase the time it took me to die. I know I suck on ele but to not even damage was really shocking considering full zerk too.

Before people decide to flame me for the comment about there being a large skillcap, I am not suggesting to remove the skillcap because that is what makes pvp interesting, however I just wanted to state why I think matchups are the way they are.

Yeah, that is pretty much my sentiments as well. I wish ranked actually put you in matches only with people of your same PVP rank, that would go a long way to fixing the problem I think. But, you would probably just have people jump on a different account with a lower rank just so they could wipe the floor with people of lower skill than them.

There seems to be a very largely held sentiment that the dungeon community is full of elitist jerks, and are generally toxic and just awful. But lately I have been drawn more and more towards dungeons than any other game mode because i have found it to be the exact opposite of that. In fact, all the toxicity and rudeness that I have encountered in game has been in PvP and WvW. There is a very large amount of people in both those game modes that are just terrible and downright unhelpful.

I have very seldom found a dungeon or fractal group that was toxic, they have nearly all been very helpful and willing to explain any strategies or builds that I am unfamiliar with. Whereas, often people in WvW will /laugh over your corps when they kill you, or if you ask them questions about their build they will respond in a rude an unhelpful manner. I wont even get into PvP cause i think we are all too familiar with how bad that community can be.

So in short, keep up the good work Dungeon people, you lovely weirdos.

You can actually get gear faster from dungeons. You have to craft some of the pieces with the mountain of gold being thrown at you.

For the skins however, I am close to getting the “Dungeoneer” title, having only three explorable dungeon paths, ever. But since it is the only skins you get in pvp (glorious armor excluded), I think this is acceptable.

No, you get them much, much faster from PvP. You can complete a PvP track of CoF in less than a day. which gives you about 3 weapons chests, a few hundred tokens, and an Armor chest. Weapons alone cost an average of 300 tokens a piece if you buy them from a vendor, and since you only get the bonus tokens (which represent the bulk of the tokens you get from doing dungeons) once a day per path, there is no way you can get enough tokens in a day of dungeoning to get 3 weapons, let alone a piece of armor to go along with them. Plus you don’t get any tomes of knowledge from dungeons at all.
