Down-Leveling

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Goettel.4389

The whole point of any game like this, is to become so powerful that no one can touch you.

Says who ?

To me, the point of any game (MMO or otherwise) is providing fun. Now, it’s entirely possible that your idea of fun includes being able to steamroll through content. Me, I found that incredibly boring in other MMO’s (e.g. WoW). It’s also the best way to make sure nobody except those running through the leveling is going to be in low-level areas, making the world feel dead even though millions are playing (e.g. WoW..)

Laurels just give me an extra little push to do the dailies, which I like, but I have little trouble skipping them, since I don’t care that much about getting the asc stuff – in fact I just blew ten laurels on dyes.

They are not wasted, Tarnish Coast server uses cities for RP…

But I mention this and get flamed

So maybe if you guys decide to lighten up on RPers, maybe cities wouldn’t feel empty on your server.

I haven’t seen any RP-ing on my server (EU Desolation), but I’d welcome anyone RP-ing in the cities or elsewhere. So no flaming here – but having active cities on only one server (if it is only one) is still a waste of great design IMO.

Maybe a seperatie RP-channel would help, so it’s easy to avoid people not RP-ing.

There’s plenty to do after you’re done leveling. GW2 is the first MMO I enjoy leveling and alting in, so I’m on my fourth character. Do your dailies casually, i.e. by just ‘running around’. Try some instances other than fractals if you don’t like them – all of them have nice looking gear to collect, if you’re into that, or just do them for fun – like me and my small guild do. Having fun is a goal in itself, right ?

OP, not saying you don’t have a point, the endgame IS a little unfocussed to me, but that’s because I come from the strict tier-regime of WoW. Just find stuff to do you enjoy, you don’t need endgame goals to play and have fun !

Goettel.4389

Not solvable problems:
- people go to LA because there’s people there. It’s a closed circle. If I want to advertise a guild where would I find the most people? LA of course! I could go to Rata Sum, but then less people would hear me.
- It’s the only not starter zone city. If I want to run TA and I can’t find enough people on the map, where am I likely to find people of the appropriate level that would be interested in it? In The Grove or in LA?
And then my fixes are far from perfect – if we move the dungeon vendors outside their dungeons, you’ll need to go to all of those places to preview their dungeon gear. Adding more than one Fractals portal makes no sense. Having more than one WvW portal place makes no sense, because then you’ll have to crowd WvW with all those portals to all those other cities as well.
While cities in Guild Wars 2 are nicely done, I doubt that any change made could make LA not the most popular one.

I’m not convinced anything about it is “unsolvable” – the soon-to-arrive LFG tool and e.g. a word-wide general chat would solve both issues you list. There’s probably some technical hurdles to overcome, but I can’t believe ANet is satisfied with the current ghost-town status of cities other than LA, and I (and evidently plenty of others) hope they can solve this.

Goettel.4389

We got these awesome cities, mostly abandoned because, well, all the action is in LA and it’s free to get there with just a five second detour through the Mists.

Why not have the option to select one of the cities as our home and have a free teleport there, if only so the obviously massive amount of work you guys put into all the cities isn’t completely wasted, as it is right now ? Alternatively, just add portals to all the cities to the central Mists hub ? Include Ebonhawke, for good measure, I love to start my morning dailies in a city full of yawning (NB. why does everybody in Ebonhawke sound like they’re either bored or very, very sleepy?)

Having free portals available in LA evidently isn’t enough to get more people to use the TP, bank etc. in the other cities, and I think it’s a real shame, if only because it robs me of more opportunities to fall to my death in Rata Sum – the little fella is clumsy like that.

Calling this game “buggy” is hilarious. Let’s take apart your list:

-We still have 0 class balance,
Let me guess: your own classes needs “some love” ? Or perhaps you need to practise ?

-number of classes are bugged badly making certain builds unplayble at all.
Finished four 80’s and had almost no bugs. Feel free to enlighten me on these bugs ?

- Increasing number of perma-stuck events.
There’s far less stuck events than at the game’s start, what’re you on about ?

-Exploits in CM,Arah and etc.
Nothing I’ve run across, are you sure you weren’t looking for them ? (which is a bannable offense BTW)

- The list is long and painful
No, it’s not, you have four items on it, and none of them makes much sense to me.

New Music in Expansion or Earlier

…the only thing I think it has over GW2 is the absolutely amazing music.

Well, raids, but yea, I couldn’t agree much more. Vanilla WoW’s music was absolutely amazing, infusing (pardon) areas with tons of flavor with usually only three or four different short tunes.

GW2’s music was a disappointment to me. IMO, Soule thematically peaked on Skyrim anyway, and ANet shouldn’t have ordered “loud, brash and generic fantasy fare” from him. I replaced it with a long playlist which includes big selections of WoW, Skyrim, the LOTR movies, the BBC/HBO series Rome, and a handful of tracks by Aphex Twin, Lustmord and some others. There’s about three original GW2 tracks on there too, my absolute favorite being the off-beat and off-key bard lalala’ing – priceless.

With Microsoft seemingly on a rampage to murder its own future in gaming and the home desktop in general, the future is wide open for Linux. Add the clout (and money) of Steam to the mix, and I’d say it’s looking bright.

No, I’m not running Linux just yet, but it has been, is, and increasingly will be an alternative, just in case Windows 9 really seals Microsoft’s fate with a closed app-store and lack of a classic desktop. I could live with just TF2 for my gaming needs to avoid that.

The Future of GW2, Loot, Population, etc.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Goettel.4389

Goettel.4389

Loot should and probably will be addressed, sooner or later – the current situation of getting more loot from a moa then from a legendary fractal boss is just crazy.

Population is no issue on my server – (EU) Desolation and the new dailies have given a boost to the number of players out in the world. It doesn’t matter if I’m leveling (on my 4th toon now) in low, mid or high level zones, there’s always people running around, making the world feel far more alive than WoW zones ever were, and that’s my baseline.

Right now, GW2 is a great game, but it can (and in my estimation will) become far, far more than it currently is, through new DE’s with more scope, more focus on guilds, added and hopefully even better general content (expansions) and constantly improving PvP experiences. Hopefully, some other MMO will arrive to match GW2’s high standards (I can’t think of any out right now), the competition will heat up, and MMO’s will have their first renaissance – or is it their second ?

IMO games have proven themselves to be a horrible medium for storytelling. Play a bit, read some text. Play a bit, watch a movie. It’s aweful. Having excellent writing and a complete lack of graphics is still the closest we’ve come to jogging the imagination through story in games (e.g. old Infocom adventures like Trinity, A Mind Forever Voyaging and Douglas Adams’ Bureaucracy).

So I don’t care about GW2’s stories, nor that of any other game. If I want story, I’ll read a book. The day games offer procedurally branching storylines purely based on player interaction I’ll be interested.

Guild wars 2 ruined all other mmo's

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Goettel.4389

GW2 just delivers its choices with such high quality and polish that the other ten or so MMO’s I’ve played just feel old and stale – every single one of them.

My problems are that GW2 is not filling all my MMO needs, specifically raiding – but that’s OT and argued about in other threads, and somehow PvP still hasn’t clicked for me (whereas I loved WoW BG’s). Also, I’d love a darker, more dangerous setting for my MMO escapism, something like a Borg-overrun Federation quadrant for SF, Jack Vance’s Dying Earth setting for fantasy, or even a Neuromancer-y cyberpunk setting.

My point is: there’s room for plenty other MMO’s, if they match the obvious leap in production quality that ANet has brought to the table, and combine it with a fresh setting. Make (part of) it the casual nirvana that GW2 is, and I could play two – or three.

Chess is a game where pieces only move in 6 ways, but the possiblities are endless. The combat system is deeper than a lot of people realize.

Chess is the perfect example to prove how the combat system lacks depth, imo.
(or the people you mention didn’t play the game extensively yet)

The current system is ok for any casual gamer that don’t mind repeating the same button sequence, the same 3 builds for 6 monthes straight (aka people who don’t play that much).
But for any “traditional” mmo gamer, who is used to play 30-50 hours per week, it can grow really, really old very quickly. The current system lacks choices.

I think there’s more than enough MMO’s catering to the jobless already.

I don’t find it “too bland” either.

Instead of screwing with the current combat system, I’d much rather see better scripted mobs/bosses that require a more tactical and coördinated group effort. I love the fact that, even though the combat does have plenty of debt (by picking the right combination of playstel, weapons/skills and traits), it is very tactile, making combat without GUI viable.

Where Chickens Drop Better Loot Than Dragons

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Goettel.4389

Goettel.4389

I’m torn on this. On the one hand, the distribution of loot in GW2 is unbelievably lobsided – OP’s post is spot on: more effort doesn’t get you more loot in GW2.

So we have this odd mix of fun (which is why we play) and preparing for another disappointing drop. More effort for not more reward just doesn’t sit well with our primate brains, and that’s not going to change anytime soon.

I’m convinced this simple fact is hurting GW2, and that something has to be done about this, soon.

On the other hand: do I really want big zergs farming the big DE bosses for epic loots ? Can’t we just get a laurel for a really big one ? Or if you have the balls: just make following a chained DE to the big boss fights a daily requirement. And if that’s a little bit too harsh, introduce a weekly achievement for stuff like this – kinda like the old days: you down one Onyxia a week.

Undoubtedly there are “best” weapon combinations, as in producing the biggest damage etc., but TBH you should get one of each weapon you can use and play with them all to see what works best for YOU – the math doesn’t tell the whole tale. And I’m not just repeating the ‘party line’ here – your play-style really makes a big difference in what weapons (and thus skills) you should pick.

Me, I’ve stuck with rifle and axe/axe – the rifle is great if you like some control over and distance to the fight, and axe/axe is just easy to play and looks great. For instances you might want to focus on mace/shield and long-bow, as the warrior is a lot more squishy than some people coming from other MMO’s seem to think.

i think it was a mistake not to have a healing profession

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Goettel.4389

As a reasonably serious former raid healer myself (nothing too hardcore, but I healed raids starting on vanilla MC/Ony/BWL/AQ20 and ending on MH in WoW), I disagree – but it took me a while.

Point is: there’s at least one other awesome MMO available to wannabe raid healers, so I’d go there if I couldn’t do without that feeling. Yes, I do miss raids – let’s just call them structured, large-scale DE’s – but not for the healing, anymore. Instead of healing I keep an eye on the party and support when and how I can – a much more dynamic experience than looking at a raid HP grid and debuffs while not standing in AoE: placing combo fields, applying stuns and other control tactically and -yes- even healing peeps a bit once in a while: it’s awesome !

Stick with it, and you’ll learn soon enough “who’s doing what” in a zerg, which is going to be ace knowledge once ANet drops raid-like open-world DE’s that DO require more than zerging. I’m confident they will.

It’s pretty simple, really: fractals are hard-as-nails compared to casual open-world dailies, so it only makes sense that playing hard gets you the really, really good stuff with some expediency – hopefully whilsts having fun (what with GW2 being a game), whilst doing the dailes gets you some nice things after a while, as a sweet little bonus to enjoying yourself.

If you haven’t done so already, get in the task manager and check if there’s anything running that you don’t need during play – there’s usually a ton of power management and other stuff running default on laptops. Just kill all processes and stop all services you don’t need. Check the performance graphs without running anything, enable Show Kernel Times and check if the red line gets above the green line. It shouldn’t, check running processes and services again.

If you’ve done all that and the FPS hasn’t increased, there really isn’t much you can do…

Mesmer, no doubt. Capped my warrior, which was cool enough, but the mesmer is just so much more… fun. After capping him I’m working on my thief, which is fun too, but of the three, mesmer is my favorite.

I was never an altoholic in other MMO’s, but since I enjoy GW2’s solo play above everything else, it’s become my main (no pun) focus. After capping the thief I’m going to start either a guardian (strong but maybe a bit boring, dunno yet) or necro, which I tried in beta and liked, even though people seem to be complaining a lot about it (don’t they always?)

Edit: about mesmer ‘pets’, phantasms are sorta like pets, but not really – they’re more like DoT’s to add to the mix. Clones aren’t really pets, just distractions. If you have a strong focus on PvP, guardian is probably easier.

You’d be content not to scorn and belittle those folks (like myself) who find small-group content more engaging and interesting than overly elaborate large-group rolling circuses?

To put my remarks in context: even though I have raided reasonably seriously in WoW, I’ve stopped raiding a long time ago, exactly because I dislike the gear threadmill and in GW2 I usually solo or play with a small circle of friends – who were far more into WoW raiding than me. So we are the type of “folk” you’re describing.

I doubt it is as clear-cut and as you put it and ANet has proven itself to be more than capable to find approaches that work, in many parts of the game. IMO e.g. the introduction of the new achievement tokens with which you can buy ascended gear is a good start in pulling down the wall that HAS grown between those running fractals and the more casual folk – like you and me.
